What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 34 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (35 of 53 positive).
Players praise the game's detailed simulation of the Thirty Years' War. [1][2][3] Many reviewers report frequent crashes and corrupted saves. [4][5][6] Some players find the interface clunky and the game unfinished. [7][4][8]

The game crashes at very turn for me. Also, I am sick an tired of the developers(AGEOD) exploting their fan base and then releasing half-finished games like this one. The fact that you get "(...)" as unit description even after around ten titles released by the developer, becomes just outrageous. Did they really not have the time to put in some flavour and unit descriptions?? No time to type half a para for a unit …

BUG, CRASH, WALLOP This is probably the most buggy, inconsistent piece of software I have had the nightmare of using in over thirty years of computer use. Every time I load the game a different bug with the interface occurs, be it missing icons for important functions to display scrolling that just stops working one day or flys around the screen uncontrollably the next. And when the interface is temporarly behaving …

Generally, this is an excellent wargame simulation that covers the period of musket and pike, flanked by cavalry and backed up by artillery. I am the ideal target market for this game as I enjoy wargames on the table top and board. This ageod system does a good job at replicating the feel of a board wargame, but handling complex mechanics behind the scenes. I am also a huge fan of musket and pike games, so delighted …

There's two aspects I want to air about this game in particular. First of all, it is not as polished as my first AEGOD experience, American Civil War. This one feels more like in an un-finished state to be honest, and alot could've been gained by simply using the same basic interface as in at least ACW. As it is now the interface feels clunky and somewhat unresponsive, and I'm left with a feeling this product was at …

This is a complex wargame covering the Thirty years war in considerable detail, with particular attention to army organisation and command. As such I would suggest this game is more suited to persons with a genuine interest in the period rather than casual players. The subject is also something of a niche area which recieves much less attention than other major european conflicts perhaps because this was a …
Summarised from 34 of the 55 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 13, 2026. How summaries are made
59% of the 34 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Thirty Years' War. The complaint that keeps coming up: frequent crashes and corrupted save files. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Also: you chose the way it's presented. I've always been into history (mainly ancient Egypt and medieval Europe) since I was old enough to hold a picture book but I absolutely hated most history classes in school because the presentation wasn't right for me. They made us memorize dates, names and what specific event caused a certain war but in the end, those don't really matter that much. The important thing to take away from history is the big picture and ironically, the best way for me to…

The subject is also something of a niche area which recieves much less attention than other major european conflicts perhaps because this was a particularly nasty conflict which devastated large parts of central Europe ( religious…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and moaned repeatedly that Steam should give us the 3rd option apart from thumbs up or thumbs down and Thirty Years' War is a prime candiatate for the wavering thumb.Ok its brilliant in concept and covers most of this war in great detail. But then again where are the French? Omitted it seems. Worse, the tutorial, which beginners like me must cling to is an unmitigating…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent, niche wargame that takes a look at a neglected period of history; the maelstrom of religious and political strife that was the Thirty Years' War, a destructive, dark period in European history. This is AGEOD at its best, with all the usual fare: army and unit creation to your own liking, decision cards for religious and political change mingle with more military minded decisions, such as siege and mercenary recruitment cards. If you've enjoyed any of their previous games, you'll…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game crashes frequently and saved games become corrupt, so you cannot load after the game crashes. If the game were stable I would recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thirty Years War is an exciting new treatment of a crucial but little understood episode in European history that gives a vivid and explicit account of all the things that Europa Universalis glosses over. Played with unusual and colorful formations on a detailed period map of Central Europe divided into small regions (no hexes), the player controls a handful of units and gets to grapple with an AI that makes the same kind of decisions that you would expect from the average human opponent.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am very interested in historical games and this game has a lot of historic content about the thirty years war so the concept is very interesting and it is a wargame which means you have to learn a lot about the game mechanics which I dont mind cause it is rewarding to learn and understand how to play the game , you have to muster a fair degree of patience and time to learn how to understand the game mechanics but it is a inresting and rewarding experience and if you love deep strategy games…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like the AGEOD's games concept but they all crash many times during the game. The longer you play, the more it crashes. That's a real shame because the games are really good. So I would like to give it a thumbs up if it weren't for the frequent crashes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Once again, Ageod completely fumbles the technical side of one of their games thus undermining what could've been a great title on a nearly forgotten conflict. Around four hours of playtime, yet around a dozen crashes. I'm still in the first few months of the Thirty Years' War and already my faith in the game being stable enough technically to make it the first decade is shattered. Click on something you are meant to click on? Crash! Pass the turn? Crash! Do nothing at all and just sit there?…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Does not work at all, devs have not patched any CTD's in 2 years practically, abandonware. Otherwise the gameplay, is very cool for those who love history. Will change my review if they start applying patches once again to fix game breaking issues. Not worth 27.99e at most under 5e. STAND CLEAR!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing strategy wargame, as the other AGEOD games, the game is Turn-based strategy using a WEGO system (you and your opponents move simultaneity once you hit the end turn button), each turn represents a month in the game time. The game set up in a 17th century Europe during the 30 years war conflict, you have 5 campaigns, some of them few turns scenario and one of them is long campaign set up in Central Europe, you either choose to play as catholic or protestant. The game has a good AI…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Constant crashes prevent from enjoying this cool game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the negative reviews are real, the game crashes constantly. I could live with this if the save system worked but it also corrupts those, so in other words its completely broken and unplayable. I am not willing to copy files around in the background constantly just to play this. Basically a waste of money, there is a really fun game underneath all these problems but do yourself a favor and go play pike and shot campaign instead
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great ageod game, quite complex and long but fun, especially if you have interest in the 30 years war. Wouldn't recomend to someone who hasn't played an ageod before however, maybe try ECW first if you still want a pike and shot period game. Many reviews mention bugs, while im sure those people have encountered bugs, this game has not crashed anymore for me than any other game in my steam library, neither have i encountered any game crashing bugs, and it is certainly not the 'buggiest game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like historical strategy games and and this period of European history is very fascinating and absolutely underrepresented in video games, so I decided to give this game a try. After a short trial very mixed opinion about it: Graphical presentation, despite some resolution issues, looks quite interesting. Unfortunately menues and are quite cluttered and confusing; so it‘s quite hard to pick the essentials and main taskss and goals out of those appealing colourful „paintings“. In conclusion…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the one of the best and surley the hardest AGEOD game up to date in my opinion. It brings perfectly Thirty Years Was struggle both in strategic depth, dfficulty, and historic recreation.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the game to get if you are interested in learning how to play the awesome AGEOD games. The tutorial here is excellent.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent simulation of the Thirty Years War period! Many aspects of this conflict are handled quickly and seamlessly! Excellent background music! You can even throw in special "cards" to give your units a special boost in movement or combat. Highly recommended if you are a fan of this period!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The age of ChatGPT allows AGEod-games to be played by a wider audience, since ChatGPT can act as a genuine teacher here, telling the player not only what to do, but how to think about the game, which requires a very hard shift away from every other wargame, and i'd like to encourage using this apporach heavily. This game is a very good simulation of what actual operational warfare has to look like: You’re Not Trying to Win Battles — You’re Trying to Break a System. In AGEod games, the enemy…

Planning on one session per month for 30 months, every 3 sessions will take place during a year in the last decade of the Thirty Years' War, so 10 years will have passed in the course of the game.
