Toki Tori 2+
Developer Two Tribes
Toki Tori 2 is a puzzle platform game, developed by Dutch video game development company Two Tribes. It is the sequel to the 2001 game Toki Tori. The game was originally announced in December 2011 with an intended release for Spring 2012 for Steam and iOS devices (and later as a Wii U game), but the game was pushed back due to longer than expected development times. The game was released on April 4, 2013 for Wii U… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Players praise Toki Tori 2+ as a clever puzzle game where progress comes from knowledge, not power-ups. [1][2][3] Many describe it as a hidden gem with brilliant design, despite its cute appearance. [4][5][6] Some find the slow pace and fiddly puzzles frustrating, leading to negative reviews. [7][8][9]

It was fine for a while, but there is such maddening puzzle design where it's easy to get yourself into a broken state and you need to start some fiddly process all over again. Let's say there's some challenge where you need to get a frog to the correct spot. They will move along on their own and jump down to lower levels. If you mess up some block along the way where they're stuck in a tiny dip in the ground then …

Toki Tori 2 is often described as a Metroidbrania, which is why I decided to give it a shot. And I can totally see why—it fits the mold if you define a Metroidbrania as a game where progress comes from gaining knowledge rather than abilities. In other words, from the very beginning, you have everything you need to go anywhere—you just don't realize it yet. Take the starting area, for example: you begin next to a …

A true gem of a puzzlevania, very well-crafted and challenging, as well as a little masterpiece of game design efficiency. As they say, "don't judge a book by its cover". I can confidently say that it is one of the best puzzle-adventure games I've played in recent years, and certainly the best puzzlevania by far. But, as usual, let's …

Perhaps the most perfect game I have played in my life. A new and simple idea, executed near-flawlessly, and pushed to its limits. Solid controls with an excellent tutorial system. A charming, colorful, and imaginative world portrayed with wonderful graphics and sound. And it was doomed to die in obscurity. What a shame.

Someone called it a "Metroidbrainia", and that's an apt description. Very simple start that quickly turns into many devious puzzles.

I knew Toki Tori was a puzzle game wrapped in a platformer container, but despite looking the same, somehow Toki Tori 2 also had a Metroidvania tag? Well, I'm happy to tell you that, indeed, Toki Tori 2 has heavy Metroidvania elements, but it's also still a puzzle game that keeps its cards close to the chest. In fact, it's probably something of an ante litteram Metroidbrainia, which is an open world game where your progress is barred by…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 2+ is a puzzle-adventure hybrid with a limited set of mechanics (move, chirp, stomp) that interact with many dynamic creatures. The puzzles are generally well-designed, and since all mechanics are available before you learn them, you can technically clear said puzzles in almost any order. The game also has a very charming presentation and a good sense of humor. Unfortunately, a few things get in the way of fully enjoying the game. 1. The game is very slow paced. Whether you're…

positive · AI labelView post →I've seen this game hundreds of times before but always assumed it was some silly kids game so never looked at it. Decided to give it a try after hearing it was actually a competent puzzle game, and I'm surprised to say that it's great. The music and art are both fantastic, the vibe is great. However, the main draw is the simplistic complexity, if that makes sense. You have two abilities and you get them both as soon as the game starts. You never unlock anything and you could technically…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 2 is an open world puzzle game. The gameplay is simplistic. Move left/right, whistle, and stomp, that's it. You whistle and stomp to get the various animals to do different things to solve puzzles. Where this really shines is in its open nature. When you start out, you'll likely take the one path that you're expected to take while solving puzzles along the way that eventually leads to the endish area. Once you get there, you gain the ability to teleport to any area you've previously…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 2+ is not a game you should pass over if you enjoy puzzle games and platformers. The first iteration of Toki Tori was level by level with no necessary continuity like most puzzle games offer. But in Toki Tori 2+, the devs offer gamers an open world of puzzles that can all be solved from the beginning, just offering new obstacles for you to overcome. Toki Tori, the baby chick character you control can whistle, move left and right, climb ladders and up steps, and jump up and smash…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If anyone here is into puzzle platformer games I *strongly* recommend Toki Tori 2+. I think it's come out for just about everything at this point. It's somewhat billed as a metroidvania but that's only because of the platformer aspect of it and the large map you have to explore -- there's no combat and the only gates to progression are your own knowledge of the gameplay. You start with your only two abilities and slowly you are introduced to puzzles which give you insight into how those…
positive · AI labelView post →Toki Tori 2+, developed and published by Two Tribes, is a beautifully crafted puzzle-platformer that stands apart from its peers through its elegant design philosophy, charming presentation, and surprisingly deep mechanics. At first glance, the game seems deceptively simple: you play as a plump, yellow bird named Toki Tori, who can only perform two actions—whistling and stomping. There are no traditional power-ups, no combat, and no text-based tutorials. Yet despite these limitations—or rather,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 2+ is a fantastic game. It's a game in the style of Leap Year or Animal Well, where knowledge is the true key to complete the game instead of power-ups in a Metroid-vania. One of the older additions to the genre, and one of the best as well. The way you discover some things are not as clever, like just a bird teaching you a note that does something, though it makes sense for a first play-through. Explaining the good stuff is essentially a spoiler, so I won't go into too much detail.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't let the cutesy graphics (which I quite enjoy!) fool you. This is a grade-A environmental puzzle game, up there with BRAID or PORTAL. I discovered TOKI TORI 2+ (TT2) via the Game Maker's Tool Kit (GMTK) YouTube channel. I liked the idea of a game where experimentation, observation, and knowledge help you progress through levels--not powerups handed out by the devs. TT2 delivers this in spades. Another thing I like about TOKI TORI 2+ is that, like BRAID, if I get stumped on a tough puzzle,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the most hidden gems I have ever come across. This game is an extremely creative and colorful Metroidvania. I believe it is hard to judge this from videos/walkthrough... I wish more people give this a chance. Also, 100%ing it is extremely challenging due to out-of-the-box thinking. Also very good music!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 1 apparently makes some of the bonus content that you paid for when you bought the game inaccessible unless you join the developers' Steam group. If I knew about this at the time that I bought Toki Tori 2+, I would not have done it, since I don't like giving money to developers partaking in unconscionable business practices, which is what that is to me. Toki Tori 2+ is still a good game I intend to complete, but I can no longer recommend anyone else buy it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →29. Toki Tori 2+. The best unknown game. Really in my top 10 of all time, I have been talking it up endlessly. Puzzle adventure, with genre-defining innovation. Looks like a mobile game for small kids but it's not. (it *is* all-ages though, no sudden horror) store.steampowered.com/app/201420/T...
positive · AI labelView post →Charming puzzle game with clever mechanics, but with too slow pacing and missing features
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Challenging and satisfying knowledge-based puzzling. It's amazing how much it does with such simple mechanics. It can be a little tricky because some of the puzzle solutions are quite long and require proper execution so you might have to try a few times even when you know what to do.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good puzzle game. Definitely challenging but not extremely so. The developers managed to do a lot with such simple mechanics. I didn't do all the achievements or some optional areas, but I did enough to reach the credits in about 8 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →outer wilds for people who are afraid of space and/or get motion sick it looks and handles like a kids game but there is more depth to it than you may think you're probably here because of someone's recommendation and they're right. just see for yourself how deep a game with two buttons can do
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Along the lines of The Swapper and A Monster's Expedition, it's a fun interconnected world of enjoyable puzzles.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 2+ is around a dollar (93% off). One of the best puzzle games I've ever played. Gentle difficulty curve that ramps all the way up, open world (more open than you think at first), and it's cute too. store.steampowered.com/app/201420/T...
positive · AI labelView post →can't let gang know I dig this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is very different to the original Toki Tori - in a good way. While the first is very episodic, this game is more of an open world where the only barrier to progression is your own knowledge and puzzle-solving; a true "metroidbrainia", if you will. The puzzles are clever but excruciatingly difficult at times, and the sparse mechanics start to feel a bit samey by the end. The ending also fell a bit flat - although admittedly I didn't find all the collectibles. Overall it was a clever…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun game! Love the puzzles!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 2+ feels like a huge missed opportunity. While the environmental puzzles are undeniably challenging, navigating them is a frustrating experience, often feeling awkward, buggy and wacky. You're given all the necessary tools from the start, but some hidden mechanics are so obscure that you might solve puzzles without fully understanding how. The biggest problem, however, is the map and how you interact with it. There's no clear way to tell if you've completed a section, missed…

When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is severely underrated for a game whose puzzle design is absolutely brilliant. If I were to describe the game without spoiling too much, you play as a yellow chicken who only has 2 different abilities: chirp and stomp. But these 2 moves can be used to manipulate the ecosystem all around you to your advantage. For example: in the game you have frogs and little purple critters. Frogs can eat those critters to then make a bubble, that they will spit if you stomp near them. Bubbles can carry…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ignore my playtime, beat this on Switch. Total gem. A metroidvania where every puzzle is solved with tweets and stomps, meaning you can go anywhere from the word go - if only you have the knowledge. I learnt to totally trust the puzzle design, because so often it let me feel like a genius and break the unbreakable. This has to be one of the sharpest puzzle games out there, and I love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has a prequel, but its vastly different enough that you dont need to play that to understand this game. The game only lets you do two actions, but it compensates with a complex, dynamic environment that directly interacts with one another. Understanding these interactions serve as the bulk of the puzzles; it only has a reasonable amount of moving parts which make them easy to remember, yet the interactions between them are genuinely surprising and fun to discover. Plus this game is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a start, it's another game where developers have failed to realise that 144mhz monitors exist; either that or they can't be bothered to patch accordingly. As an owner of one of these monitors you have 3 choices... 1. Run in at 30 FPS and relive the reason why you got a 144mhz monitor in the first place. 2. Untick the 30FPS box and enjoy the game at a super-fast speed. 3. DO NOT BUY THE GAME. Secondly, I'm not a fan of the progress system. It's a bit confusing where if you leave the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a really good open world puzzle game. Two important notes: 1: Visit the city and the cave below it before you get all 5 frogs. 2: You need to get all fragments in the invisible frog level before collecting the frog.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toki Tori 2+ is one of the best puzzle games I have ever played. I wouldn't call it "metroidvania-style" because this is not the target audience for this game. It is a game for people that like puzzles, plain and simple. And, as a puzzle game, it is exquisitely designed and a real joy to play, with beautiful graphics, delightful music and sounds, and of course, masterfully crafted puzzles that naturally escalate in difficulty as you learn to use your seemingly limited abilities to interact with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A deceptively simple yet genius puzzle "metroidvania"where the only progression is your knowledge of the game. Its a game that gives you a sense of exploration on many different levels. Don't let the cutesy graphics deceive or dissuade you. There are no cheap secrets, only clever solutions using obvious mechanics and advanced knowledge. A couple of the puzzles are truly tedious or frustrating, but usually that feeling just means you don't really know what you're doing yet and should come back…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's cute. But it's boring. 1/5
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is mind-numbingly challenging, sadistic, and extremely rewarding. There are no puzzles in this game that you cannot progress through when you first see them. It's a metroidvania where the only upgrades are in your brain. You gain perspective, you feel like you finally got it, and like nothing can stop you, and then the game teaches you again that you know nothing. You poor, spoiled baby. Nothing. Have fun tho!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would recommend this amazing and cute game for people who are starting with puzzle genre. The difficulty goes up in user friendly way, but as all puzzle games its sometimes tricky and hard to find solution, but its warm aesthetics will make you feel welcoming for your new try as you restart your progress from last checkpoint with cute bird song :). Soundtrack and overall feeling is just amazing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best childhood game i ever played, thank you for the memories
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A remarkably clever puzzle adventure builds an entire experience around just two simple actions, a whistle and a stomp. Rather than constantly introducing new abilities, progression comes from learning how creatures, plants, and environmental systems interact with one another. Every discovery feels earned because solutions come from observation and understanding rather than collecting upgrades. World design is one of the strongest aspects of the adventure. The environment functions as a giant…

There is no instruction on how to play the game; players learn to utilize these abilities through observation and experimentation, gradually solving the various puzzles to progress through the game.
