Developer Nihon Falcom

Tokyo Xanadu is a 2015 action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom. The game was first released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita in September 2015, and worldwide in June 2017. An enhanced version of the game, Tokyo Xanadu eX+, was… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

TLDR: a decent 3D-action combat game wrapped in a typical Falcom JRPG, but also a somewhat lazy console port, sloppily translated with a story that relies heavily on Falcom's favourite clichés. I honestly had a hard time deciding whether to rate this game positively or negatively. I’ve played it start-to-finish three times (a completionist run takes ~70 hours), so it’s definitely not a bad game. It’s actually pretty …

The game itself is enjoyable, the combat is very satisfying, and the music is great, as is expected from a Falcom game. Nothing more to add in that department that plenty others haven't already. HOWEVER, this is probably the most half-arsed localisation I have seen in any JRPG. I can understand the occasional typo or translation errors, but here it's pretty clear that the localisers just didn't care to put in any …

People in some reviews are calling this "We have Persona at home". Not far off but technically its more of "what if Trails of Cold Steel and Ys got an offspring". It borrows a lot of Cold Steel mechanics, except the battle system is from Ys (somewhat). Hey what are you doing reading a review of a niche 2015 game like you don't already know if you're going to play it? You can and should consider this a spinoff of the Trails of Cold Steel series, a kind of CS 2.5, in which the devs are free of the story but can steal as many mechanics as they like and try some new ones. "Cold Steel 2.5 with real time combat and Persona's daytime" gets you most of the way there. I …

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ follows a group of students with supernatural abilities that allow them to fight enemies known as Greeds. Recently gates have been appearing more frequently and in doing so starts to interact and warp reality. To combat this problem Kou and a slowly increasing group of other students work to seal the gates around the city. If the gates are left unchecked the greeds would grow to powerful and another twilight disaster would happen, once again killing thousands of people. The…

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ for those who don't know, is an enhanced re-release of a PS-vita title, the game features new side stories and an extra after story which really adds to the game as a whole, along with that you get a bunch of past DLC as part of the base game, new costumes exclusive to the new version and I believe a few new elements, (equipment pieces) albeit not the most fancy ones you'll get, it's a fun kind of spinoff Falcom game using ideas and some assets from their legend of heroes…

Its a mix of cold steel and Ys, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a hungry for a Falcom rpg. The story drags on way to long, with long stretch of dialogue and scenes that really overstay their welcome. Credit where its due, they try really hard to set up and interesting world and lore, but I just wasn't into it. Gameplay is weirdly simple. Dungeons are very linear, and instead of getting more complicated or interesting just get longer. Each character has a normal, power, and ranged…

"Me: 'Mom, can we have Persona?' Mom: 'We have Persona at home.' Persona at home: Tokyo Xanadu eX+." Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is the kind of game that wants to be the cool kid at the Persona table, but let’s be real, it’s sitting somewhere in the back, wearing last season’s graphics and hoping nobody notices. Even if everything feels a bit derivative and low-budget, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ still manages to be a comfort food for people who can’t get enough of that Persona vibe. It will feel familiar,…

I wanted to like this game a lot more than I did (thus far) I was recommended this and on paper, it sounded like a recipe for something I would love; Falcoms games with a persona twist (ignore the fact that's basically CS1). However, I'm putting it down like a dog FOR NOW after reaching nearly the end of chapter 3 due to a culmination of stuff. I don't really think the games premise was all that bad so far. Morimiya is a charming setting, and Falcoms signature with memorable NPCs their own…

this game has flaws, it's definitely not perfect, and it's got things i'd change in a heartbeat. having said that, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥' LOVE this game. half city-life, half action rpg, it strikes just the right balance of story to gameplay, and while the gameplay is admittedly not super deep, you can most certainly get some good fun out of it. A somewhat lesser entry in Falcom's catalogue, this one is kind of like if Trails of Cold Steel was set in the real world in Tokyo and leaned a bit more heavily on the whole Persona formula, but for some weird reason opted to have a real time action combat system more similar to Ys but way more simplistic and somewhat bland. The story itself is pretty generic and the characters are also pretty cliché, hitting most of the same beats you've seen half a dozen times in the Trails series, but it's…

I liked it a lot, it's like a modern day Tails of Cold Steel with less baggage and merged with our world. Storyline is more focussed but you still get a lot of side content you can do. Like the Trails games npcs have their own stories developing alongside and new text when things change. The only downside for me is that I was unable to get to the final bossfight in After Story, even after putting difficulty on easy to get the platforms to stay when jumping. Fantastic IP from Falcom! With Persona, Ys, and Trails DNA, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ has a winning formula that deserves a sequel. The graphics are nothing special, but nobody who's really into Falcom games cares about that as long as the story, characters, music, and gameplay are solid, and Falcom got it right with this one.

I've heard some forms of entertainment referred to as "comfort food" and I think that is a pretty apt description of Tokyo Xanadu. You're not expecting something that will blow you away, you just want something that you're familiar with and that will scratch that itch. Most of the comps for this game are Persona and Trails of Cold Steel, and those are definitely accurate. Tokyo Xanadu is a very beautiful experience. It feels clear that this title was something of an experiment for Nihon Falcom, as it appears to have been developed with a much lower budget and a smaller team than what we usually see in the Trails games, for example. Even so, Tokyo Xanadu has a lot of heart. Its narrative, characters, and world are charming, and the ending leaves plenty of room for a potential sequel. In terms of gameplay, it is an action RPG. I'm a big fan of the "Trails" games, and I made it trough around 80% of the game. The story was interesting, but the combat bored me to tears, and boss HPs stated to balloon noticably in the latter chapters. Only 3 moves per character, almost all identical, and no diversity at all... The crystals and gear are also just boring stat sticks.

And that’s saying a lot, because Trails already has some pretty bad storytelling. Your main character is Kou, your generic “I’m sarcastically over it” protagonist who acts like he just came from an emo convention, minus the aesthetics, which honestly could’ve added some much-needed spice. Tokyo Xanadu is an interesting project, since at first glance it seems like a "Persona clone". After completing it to the very end I'd say it's more like, "Falcom tries for an Urban Fantasy game." Indeed, this game feels very much like a mix of Trails and YS, though it's also reminiscent of Persona with its school setting and social link-style affinity system. Falcom might be the only company that has 4 decades worth of experience in the gaming industry and is still incapable of creating a well designed game that's actually worth playing, and this tripe that's a combination of two of their garbage "flagship" IPs is appropiately their worst work. But if you want Trails' appallingly bad writing full of tired anime templates and Ys' gameplay which consists of taking potshots at damage sponges while jumping/dodging around their absurdly OP attacks with…

It's a Xanadu set in Tokyo with high school students, coy adults, local ruffians and no talking animals. Well, except for that one. Well, it's not really an animal, but it is? Xanadu!

it's a good game. a fine rpg. my biggest complaints are mostly with the structure. the gameplay is fine - action lite - and is perfectly serviceable. but the story suffers because every chapter is structured like an anime episode, with an intro re-playing, a problem introduced, and solved by the end of it. unfortunately since the focus is mostly on that, it also means there's little friction between characters, since well you solved the problem! we are pals now. it doesn't make it feel shallow…

The best of all worlds. You like the action based Fighting System of Ys but you also enjoy the big character based Storytelling from the Trails Games? With this Game Falcom got you covered. It´s a complete different Scenario. No Fantasy Setting, No Erebonia (almost - one Character is so familiar in name and Likeness... even voice actor - can´t be a coincidence). We´re in a very modern Tokyo very slightly in the future. Engine Technically we´re on a Trails of Cold Steel III Level. So as a…

Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ 9/10 This was an incredible game, spectacular character, incredible story, amazing music, great gameplay and cool grid system! I love every character, especially the main character, Overall, if you enjoy Trails or Ys, I do recommend this game, but don't with high expectations!

You can TALK to the Pigeons in the game. I didn’t know I needed this. Thank you Falcom. #TokyoXanaduEx+ #TokyoXanadu

Tokyo Xanadu is not a perfect game by any means but it managed to carve a space out in my heart in a way that few games could. I'm writing this review after finishing it for the second time (7 years later, preparing for the release of Tokyo Xanadu II) and it is just as good an experience as I remember. Tokyo Xanadu is your typical JRPG with social link type of game, it's made in the same engine as Trails of Cold Steel but with an action combat system. It IS a lower budget game and it feels…

It's okay, typical rpg. I don't like how slow the story and phasing is but if you want something other than persona series, this might be worth a try

This game is just dripping cheesy anime cliche through out it, that if you are a weeb you are most likely going to eat this up and love every second of it.. Note: that is not a compliment. At the time of writing this I have put 2.4 hours into it. 30 mins of that was actual "action/dungeon exploration". The remaining was split between cringe japanese school anime talk, running errands, and "social links". The very first Persona game is my favorite game of all time. Persona 3 killed the series…
