In my mind this is the best Tomb Raider game. (though I haven't tried the more recent remake) The first series of six games is too clunky to play these days. The later games switched format to care more about scripted sequences and a little bit of open world gameplay, and are less about tight linear level design. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is at times SOOOOO fun, and at other times SOOOOO frustrating. I feel conflicted because the gameplay is amazing, all the acrobatics and puzzles. It's honestly really fun... but when the highs are highs... the lows are low. There are moments in this game where things feel "unfair" rather than difficult, and that is the biggest issue I have. Anniversary received positive reviews following its initial release on PC and PS2, with many calling it a worthy remake of the original game. 1UP.com's Joe Rybicki called the game a homage in its own right. Eurogamer's Kristan Reed said that Anniversary merited a higher score than Legend due to its less linear structure and lower frequency of tutorials. GameSpy's Patrick Joynt praised the recreation and expansion of the original game's locations and gameplay, but faulted the camera control and some "unforgiving" puzzles.
