What people are saying
Mostly positive sandbox vehicle builder, but DLC paywalls frustrate many.
Players praise the game's creative freedom, calling it "the best sandbox vehicle creator" and one of the best open world building games known to man. Many enjoy building anything from cars to mechs, with one player noting they built a car stablized the car ran over chickens jumped ramps went through rings of fire. [10][9][3]
However, many players allege the developers are greedy, with one saying the developers are extremely greedy with 90% of updates containing dlc. Another complains "half of the content is locked behind DLCs that would cost over $100 to buy." Despite this, the core game is still recommended by many, with one player calling it genuinely just a good game. [30][21][15]

positive · AI labelView post →The game is fun, but for a paid game...why the hell is everything in the game locked behind a second paywall!?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its not the same game anymore the devs are: not listening to what people want fixing things that aren't broken not fixing the broken things adding too many DLC's that gate keep 50% if the games content
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →STOP MAKING EVERY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FEATURE A PAYED DLC. This game is honestly really good but you have to pay for absolutely every new feature or update because it's a dlc why??
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After spending quite a bit of time with Trailmakers, I can honestly say that it is a fun game, but it's also one of the most frustrating games I've played when it comes to wasted potential. My biggest issue is the lack of variety in the base game's building blocks. For a game that revolves entirely around creativity and engineering, the selection of wedges, corner wedges, and aircraft panels feels surprisingly limited. I constantly find myself unable to build what I envision because a simple…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too many paid dlc's. I know running a game costs money but im still paying money for the game. I dont want to spend any more on features that should just be free
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game. The problem is that it lacks overall content, and a lot of the content is locked behind DLC paywalls. You really only have 2 options for things to do if you're playing singleplayer, which can get pretty repetitive quite quickly, especially when considering the lack of content without DLCs. A game with good potential and is still fun for a short while, but sadly locked behind a paywall and an almost requirement to play multiplayer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was great until they just started throwing dlc like crazy at it and with the base game feels like I have a paid demo of the game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredible game, and I'm leaving this review as a top 3 world record holder in a rally map and in the top 10 in another 3 courses, but the greed is unreal, you're locked behind half the game if you don't purchase dlc's. It's not even about just looks, a lot of dlc's have functional parts that are really useful and not being able to use them because they decided a 25 dollar game needs another 100 dollars of dlc's is insane to me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly a very great game, especially with friends. However, the fact that every new update is followed by paid DLC makes me regret supporting them with my purchase in the first place. It's incredibly frustrating that, after having bought the game, new content is almost exclusively available through monetary means.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is pretty fun and creative, but a solid 90% of the game is locked behind and extra 50 dollars worth of DLCs. Pretty sad to see the devs get so greedy like this and sabotage such a well made game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play only if you are willing to buy DLC's. Also note that all blocks will not be unlocked in Sandbox because you need to unlock them in the Campaign. Which is why i give this game a negative review, Sandbox should be for only creating stuff so there is no point in locking blocks in sandbox
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To me this game seems like a money grab far too many DLC‘s and not enough stuff in the base game which pretty much forces, everyone to buy all of the DLC’s and wasting far too much money I rather go play a different game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love weapons of mass destruction. I used to not understand why people would sell their souls to military corporations. Sure, they earned a bit more, but the ethics and loss of life are definitely not worth it. That's what I thought until I played this game. I bought it for $1 on sale and loaded it into the campaign. Played it for like 2 hours, got bored, and decided to play multiplayer. I joined a random server on the list (the only one without an inappropriate name), and my views changed.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if ur 2 or more of these things, please get this game: -smart -creative -bored -just like vehicles
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I built a car stablized the car ran over chickens jumped ramps went through rings of fire And went home to play trailmakers :D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →lowkey the best building game to exist , im glad i bought it for my twin so we can play it together
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the kind of game where you are given a massive selection of various blocks, motorized parts, wheels, etc. and are told "go wild". The only limitation to what kind of machines you create are your imagination and whether or not you can make them work. And trust me, if you're willing to tinker and hone your design enough you CAN make it work. There are people who have literally made fully functional DOOM arcade machines, it's insane what you can achieve. Want to build a submarine that can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →build hundreds of different unique aircraft that each accel at their special purposes, proceed to get dogged on by an 8 year old with a plane with 500 guns that barely flies
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh, wow. Seven years after its early access debut, physics'y construction sandbox game Trailmakers just rolled out a whole new story campaign as a free update. Proper missions, NPCs and combat against robots, both air and ground. That's extremely cool of the devs.
neutral · AI labelView post →I can see the fun in the game, but the fact is that most of its content is locked behind DLC. In a game centered around creativity, having to pay so much just to access better tools and features feels pretty disappointing. That said, if you have the money, go ahead and buy it all. Personally, though, I think Scrap Mechanic offers much better value—though it’s a shame that it hasn’t received an update in ages.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Remade Humpback from Freelancer in Trailmakers. I haven't explored doing replicates so much before. Freelancer (and other 2000-2010 games) are just perfect for this due to polygonal structures. Really proud with this one, I need to revisit it soon as it flies like boulder with attached thrusters which are completely not aligned with center of mass.
positive · AI labelView post →fun game but 1) It is very DLC heavy 2) it can be very glitchy 3) no crossplay

neutral · AI labelView post →Literally the BEST sandbox vehicle creator, and I will stand by it. It has an easy to learn system to building vehicles, an option for the game to literally calculate certain forces and suggest what actions to take regarding it. The game receives constant updates, patches, etc. AND on top of all that, there is DLC, Campaigns, multiplayer, and the likes. I highly recommend this game to anyone looking into a fun sandbox game.

neutral · AI labelView post →Like someone once said: "The only limit, is your limited imagination." and it's rather true. If you look past the bugs and technical issues, it is a great game. Idea, experiment and optimize is how i describe the gameplay, you have an idea, you experiment with it and learn things from it and then you optimize the build to perfection. DLCs can be very nice to have but not many people will know which ones are good, so i will give you a list of ones i recommend: Motorhead DLC: Gives a good amount…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →dont care for the story, fetch quests to unlock the fun part of the game; making stuff. Skip straight to sandbox and its goated.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was an amazing game, only took like one tutorial to learn how logic works, not too hard but not too easy. Makes the game challenging but extremely fun, best sandbox I've played in a while.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DLC is overpriced and limits the creativity a lot but the game is fun in itself, though i would reccomend making DLCs less pricy, but overall i reccomend this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →genuinely just a good game, not much else to it. there's certainly a learning curve in building when it comes to things like joint/piston glitching, as well as glitches like with quantum rudders, hover glitch etc. but ultimately there's a lot of potential, tons of player agency (it's a sandbox) and loads of opportunities for cool builds. a very well-made game, could use some optimisation, but it's pretty small, doesn't take up loads of space, and runs decently on multiplayer (up to 8 players).…

neutral · AI labelView post →The game is great and probably one of the best sandbox games on Steam. It is incredibly easy and simple to build whatever your imagination desires. Would recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play Trailmakers which is like Legos where people mostly build planes and tanks to shoot each other, but I build cranes, forklifts, trucks and boats and fill them with the barrels and crates from around the maps and move them to other places. Very peaceful and rewarding to me.
positive · AI labelView post →Very fun game, ran it on "pretty and slow" and it still ran very well and looked pretty good though i wish there wasn't THAT much stuff locked behind DLC's but eh you can't have everything
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As long as they keep releasing parts that are paywalled i will not recomend this game Dont get me wrong its a really fun game and i am going to put a few more 100h in it, maybe more But if u dont want to spend more then 50 euro for all the fun blocks... just dont get the game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool game but half of the content is locked behind DLCs that would cost over $100 to buy. Get it if you want, but know that you are going to be spending a lot more on DLCs if you actually want to play the full game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →27 hours? how did that happen?... Oh right, probably the many experimental tank, submarine, helicopter, plane, ship, boat, buggy, motorbike & walker engines builds I've attempted (some more successful than others) that consumed entire evenings. Yes this game will do that to you...if you're looking for a game that encourages you to utilise your understanding of real world physics, look no further. the campaigns? some more fun than others but there's so many you'll find one for you!…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →100% get this game if you can. Genuinely one of the best (top 3) games for creativity. You can build about ANYTHING you want, I like the campaigns, but the only part I don't like is in the pioneers BOTNAK water fight, it was SO incredibly difficult and I had to respawn after dying about 10+ times, same goes for the air/lava BOTNAK fight, though that was only because I had barely any good resources and made the worst builds for fighting, but we don't mention that... But other than that, you can…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it is a good game it is a sort of lego thingy where you can build cars planes submarines or a transformer and mechs all together it is a good game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have mixed opinions about this game. It is a good way to build vehicles, but it is limited. Big vehicles, such as a naval ship or an AC-130 Gunship, simply make the game glitch. I was building a gunship and the game glitched in Multiplayer, and I lost connection to the server. I had to completely start over on the gunship, and because I didn't want to lose my progress again, I went into singleplayer to build it, but once again, when the ship got too big, it tore itself apart, and I couldn't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely LOVE this game BUUUUTTTTT This whole "not finish an early access game only to become a DLC factory" thing has got to stop. Capitalism ruins everything. Power to the workers.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have had the base game since release and it never really felt like a complete and finished game. They now have 100$ of content and parts as dlc. Guess that is why..
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game for building projects. Basically Minecraft on steroids with engineering and logic. Highly recommend for problem solvers and anyone who likes to experiment and test
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun game, essentially LEGO turned alive with mechanical contraptions.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →W game. really fun and easy to get started on. Sadly has a decent amount of content locked behind DLC's but still rather fun and pliable even without DLC content
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: It's actually a good game Cons: It's a damn DLC buying simulator. - You like more guns? Pay up! - You want a handful more pieces so you can create an @ss mech? Pay up! - Boat? - Pay up! Brother, just go get Stormworks + Weapons DLC, it's pretty much Trailmakers without the Frogs asking you for a lift.
