It is the successor to Rail Simulator, and was released online on 12 June 2009 and in stores on 3 July. It is a Steamworks title, which means it uses and requires Steam to activate and to deliver core game updates. What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 208 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (21,187 of 29,536 positive).
Players praise the game's realism and relaxing experience, but many criticize the expensive DLC model. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note dated graphics and performance issues, yet still find the game enjoyable. [4][5][6] A few players report broken modes and missing content, calling the base game incomplete. [7][8][9]

As others have said, what you're buying here (the base game) is a big, fat nothing burger... The meat is sold to you in the form of DLC and we're not talking £2 per route or whatever. Just look at the prices of the DLCs... It's complete madness. The greed is through the roof. What slither of game there is here is... Well, you drive trains. Choo-choo. But again, 99% of the game is inaccessible if you don't surrender …

its not a bad game, its actually really good and because i like trains i also like this game but what i dont like is the dlc's, i thought when buying the game the mods and like that were free like in BeamNG.drive but yh if you wanna buy a route or a train you need money, so i recommend this game for people that like trains but i also dont recommend this game for people that dont have any money.

A highly realistic and detailed train simulation that offers a relaxing yet immersive experience for train enthusiasts and casual players alike.

TS Classic is hands down my favorite game on Steam. I’ve tried other sims, but nothing captures the feeling of driving trains like this one. The routes are immersive, the locomotives feel alive, and I can spend hours just enjoying the scenery while managing signals and speed. Sure, the graphics aren’t the newest, but the gameplay depth more than makes up for it. The amount of content and DLC means there’s always …

crashes often when switching windows/applications, choppy performance, but otherwise a good time.
Summarised from 34 of the 218 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
75% of the 208 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Train Simulator Classic. The complaint that keeps coming up: expensive DLC with thousands of dollars in content. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
IGN gave RailWorks a seven out of ten, or "good", stating that the game "doesn't bring a lot of new stuff to the genre" and graphically "lacks the high-end flair of today's top-level titles". RailWorks 2 won the award for Simulation of the Year 2010 by readers of Game Industry News (GiN).

60 of 238 · most liked firstI genuinely wanted to love this game. I'm a huge fan of trains and railway simulators, and I bought Train Simulator Classic during the Steam Summer Sale expecting to spend my weekend driving trains—not spending hours acting as an unpaid QA tester. From the very first launch, the game was broken. Quick Drive worked occasionally, but almost every other game mode was either completely unusable or severely broken. Academy scenarios wouldn't load. Career scenarios got stuck on a blank background…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm just gonna say this, ♥♥♥♥ you DTG, your business practices are bordering on predatory, you can and will just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ remove DLCs whenever you want, every time I play this ♥♥♥♥-heap of a game its like more and more of my content is going missing for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason. ♥♥♥♥ you and ♥♥♥♥ your stupid cashgrab waste of oxygen ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Train Simulator Classic (aka RailWorks) after 17 years is hard to rate due to high number of add-ons It’s bad part is - no remaster on old routes - no multiplayer - too expensive - arcade physics (atleast in old add-ons) The good part is - very active modding community - new routes are high quality Conclusion: For me base game is only needed because community makes a great maps and most of them are free. Also most add-ons are from three countries and not everyone will like it. Overall…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is definitely not my type of game, I'm just clearing out my collection, so I will judge this game differently. My time was short with this simulator, but it was enough to skip past it. The gameplay is as simple as it gets, from what I explored, with not much input in the control of the trains. The menus are really confusing to navigate through and really counterintuitive. The tutorial just straight didn't work, or I couldn't get it to work. There are some different scenarios to explore…

neutral · AI labelView post →Dovetail Developers should update this game from single core to multi cores to get rid of freezing and stuttering.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Broken don't buy. They can take the time to put ads for TSW7 in the loading screens, but can't fix any of the HUNDREDS of game breaking bugs. This game will now live in my hidden folder because 90% of the content wont load.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Been playing for years - my grandpa bought me this game when I was 9 at a walmart,,, Now I'm 22, in college at a great school, and looking to start a career on the railroad. Great game, to say the least...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Want to love this and have spent a lot of time in it over the years but... just get too frustrated with the signalling errors (illegal aspects, incorrect flank protection, signals on adjacent lines cleared when they shouldn't be). Plus it is a volatile piece of software which absolutely hates being alt-tabbed and crashes easily. Such a shame! There's so much to like but i can't do it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm just sick of this buggy game crashing constantly. It's a complete lottery as to whether anything will reliably load or play correctly. I'm done spending any more money on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Genuinely the most poorly optimized game out there. I have a pretty decent gaming laptop all things considered, and it can handle a lot of poorly optimized games, but THIS ANCIENT GAME, that is only a year younger than I am, is the most unstable, poorly optimized game I've ever played. Even on DX12 with the lowest graphics settings possible, I was getting CONSTANT out-of-memory crashes. I don't know how you guys at Dovetail sleep at night knowing that you keep pushing this 16-year-old sloppily…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m sure it could be a great game. I genuinely wanted to play a proper train simulation, but the game is full of stupid technical issues and I couldn’t even get past the launch. All my GPU drivers are fully up to date, yet I keep getting errors over and over again. Ridiculous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really don't like this game. I think I started with the 2018 version and it has hardly changed since then, even after yearly updates. It seems they just change the opening picture and the year. There you go, there's your update. My grand kids don't ever ask to play this. I have tried numerous times to figure it out, but I end up in frustration. When driving, almost every time, it says my scenario failed, but gives no reason why. Was I speeding? I don't think so. Too slow? I don't think so.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a very good game for those who want a big network rather than very extreme detail.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great game, could have better graphics but still a great game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game dissapoints.. and Rewards. Makes you feel extremely happy... but also drags you down to the level of hate you feel like you've never experienced before.. again...and again... and again... hatelove this game...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A highly realistic and detailed train simulation that offers a relaxing yet immersive experience for train enthusiasts and casual players alike.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As long as you only buy add ons from people like Smokebox, Bossman Games, or Caledonia Works, it's a great game. Having to buy routes is annoying however, and the amount of paid DLC in this game is completely ridiculous too. I'm sure it's probably upwards of $10,000 to buy every single piece of DLC at full price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Outdated spaghetti code POS from 2007. It is absolutely disgusting that they have been rebranding and re-releasing this ancient product for over a decade. Stay far away.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its still really buggy & does not always take keyboard presses or acknowledge when you completed a task. do not think dovetail is ever going to fix it. Same issues with both window 10, 11 & Debian through Steam
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not too much of a Debbie downer when it comes to Aggressive Monetization, Daddy dovetail has to keep the lights on and frankly i respect it, but it's not for me, i couldn't reccomend it to someone who doesn't like having to buy a ton of DLC
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its a shame this game has so much potential. But just can't get it to look great on my pc. I am gutted place make a train sim classic two we are in 2026 not your grandads year off 1976. Its not worth the price of £29.99 I am sad its a sad day ;)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Train Simulator Classic laughs in the face of fighting game gooner game.
neutral · AI labelView post →I would advice you guys strongly to not buy this, at this time. Of course, if anything changes, I would change my review accordingly. The PC configuration I have.... Is very strong, let's say. It's not just RTX 5090, it has RTX 5070Ti. I did attempted DirectX 12. The fact that it is still experimental in 2026 is not good advertising, neither good experience for someone like me. I mean, I am on latest version of Windows 11, with DirectX 12 nonstop working here. I don't want to give up this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Frustrated, spent half an hour on a tedious tutorial that barely taught anything and now I can't even get the trains to turn on/start moving
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even after all these years, it is still a sim that keeps delivering. Yes it has limitations but it is still a fantastic sim.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly it feels like the game keeps trying to find a new way to crash, or a new way to run "OUT OF MEMORY" while having 2000's pc performance on a higher end modern pc. $30 Bucks for a game that you need to basically rebuy the game again and again to get more content than just three routes with roughly three trains each. Granted while I did buy only 2 DLC's, I REALLY wanted to run the Big Boy trains which I feel was *mostly with a grain of salt (this game being the only way to enjoy it)…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game sucks, post a new update every year, yet same exact game, The community is what keeps it going rather than the devs, and game keeps closing within seconds of going to new tab. Would not buy,
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great variety of train routes, with tons of community content, graphics are upto dated and dlc feels expensive. but game is solid.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good optimazation, played on multiple computers, even worse than mine and they game ran smoothly, good basic choice of locomotives and routes at start, i played the 2016 pack first [Sherman Hill, Koblenz, 50's Riviera] before buying the newest Steam release version. I own the Maria's Pass DLC and Soldier's summit, which add a lot of Trains and great routes. About em' they're PERFECT, much detail, faithfulness and for the time this game been made in its really good looking even nowadays. Best…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The much larger selection of Routes, Traction and ease of entering the game I find so much superior to TSW3 and later is a joy. Albeit the realism is pretty good, but not without errors. I would prefer this game to TSW3 + which is far too expensive. This game offers so much more variety and iconic locomotives, which unfortunately TSW does not.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got to drive big locomotives and do absolutely nothing but move levers in a big box of steel which was somehow fun
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is okay as far as it goes, but it's going to cost you a fortune if you want to move on from the basic package. I assumed when I bought the software that would give me access to all sorts of rail experiences in the UK. However, it seems that almost everything I would like to do has to be purchased as an add-on. Bit of a rip-off in my opinion...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love travel simulator games, I have a few bus simulator games so I thought, I don't always catch the bus, I do catch the train as well so I'd give this ago, seeing it has over 1300 achievements, might try and do just 1 a day, that will take me about touching 4 years, better buy a few annual train tickets 🤣
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just can't get behind this sim. Environments look terrible, controls are not very realistic, models are subpar at best. I really don't understand the hype behind this series of sims. Hell, this is the same game as TSW6, and it's the same game as whatever Dovetail put out ten years ago, just repackaged and rebadged.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Barely any tutorials, many things left unexplained. Some missions force key combinations which are impossible on my keyboard (Ctrl+=) and the key combinations are hardcoded, meaning: Unchangable. I therefore can't play content I've paid for. When you're trying to drive a cargo train from A to B and your emergency brake locks up for the seventh time without ANY rhyme, reason or information, also not unlocking until the train is at full stop, you're losing any fun you've had up to that point…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tfw game be broken :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the face of many new train sims, sometimes it's good to stick to the simple basics.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its All Fun N Game Untill you stuck in 4 hours in rail crossing. Man also DLC expensive i love this game i listen to songs while driving train at 100 kmph
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yes you are only buying the base game, but most people only need 2 or 3 DLC, and considering most DLC routes are made by small studios i dont find it too ridicilously priced

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best Rail sim to date! Due to the gameplay and available DLC newer versions can't compete. Only the graphics are a little dated but still excellent with the bonus you run max GPU settings no problem with today's (2025) technology.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i know this game may be old, to the point of being GTA 5 old, but i swear, as a "i'm bored and like trains" kinda game, this game holds up. can totally spend hours without realizing it. have some soothing music or audio book and just drive trains, love it and you should too
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →had to use dxvk to get the game to even run and has the most obnoxious monetisation scheme known to man
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Go back in time and enjoy many routes that are not available for TSW .
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →BENJAMIN NETANYAHU SABOTAGED MY STEAM TRAIN AND MADE IT BLOW UP BECAUSE I BOUGHT THIS GAME INSTEAD OF GIVING ALL MY MONEY TO IZREAL
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a hellscape. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. This game has stupid amounts of requirements to get good routes which don't exist anymore. DTG have left this game to be ran by third party devs. It will set you back 1000s of £££s just to get the right requirements for these Third Party routes to work. This game is unplayable standalone with out mods. For uk routes/trains/mods you need at least 1TB of storage. Oh and once you get all of that enjoy crashing every time you blink wrong or something.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would just recommended it. Nice simulator, can be playable and enjoyed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great game with a plethora of DLC but i've noticed this game doesn't play well on any pc, good or bad. you'll need to do some optimizations using external resources to get the game to perform well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is almost a twin of Microsoft Train Simulator, but the graphics are more realistic there are people in the trains and platforms and the drivers in the engines and trains are visible, it's a great find
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →outdated but still classic game fun train game great for entry level pcs like mine i like this game i recomend
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game is good for mods and maps dlcs are ♥♥♥♥
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- Train Simulator Classic (replay) Another game I'm playing pretty much all the time but would you expect nothing less from a railfan? This game may be old (and it shows) but an ever expanding library of scenarios is what keeps me coming back to this one.
positive · AI labelView post →Not sure why there are so many negative reviews for TS Classic. This game is fun if you like trains and there is a lot to learn here about the operation of various trains in US and Europe. Love the steam locos and my favorite "Big Boy" (Separate purchase).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game, but there are just way to many dlcs and not enough good things in the base game. Its to overly monitised and overall don't waste your time with it.
