I mean... I'll be honest, it works. It's playable, but... it gets old really quick. I do like that you can kinda zoom accross the level with some well times unboxeseses, but I'd rather the game actually challenge you to platform proper. The moves are jump, move, butt slam and unbox, which is a mid-air jump in the cost of one health... that's it. :U The levels are open world things that involve collecting this and …

I had the ol’ lockdown blues the past few days so I was really in the mood for a 3D platformer to keep me busy but not take up too much concentration. Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure is a cute casual 3D platformer which I think fit the bill pretty well. Although it has most of the classic characteristics of an old 90s 3D platformer; bright colourful graphics, hub world, collectables, slightly cheesy story, antagonist and …

I'm so sad this never got a sequel Out of all the indie 3D platformers chasing the feelings of the ones from yesterday, Unbox does something the rest fail to do. It doesn't have a fancy roster of attacks - it's mostly a two button game (though not without depth). It doesn't try for faithful 1:1 re-imagining. No 3D Mario complex movement and succumbing to the Nintendo game design mold. No Rare-esque collectathon …

It's such an underrated gem; I don't even know why people just don't know about this game. I was searching for a fun platform game, similar to Croc 2 which I loved dearly when I was a kid. And I found this. It's rather a collectathon like Banjo-Kazooie, but I still had a blast with it. The whole world is well-built, the story is simple but cute (perfect even for little kids), and the characters, jokes, references …

I'm gonna be honest: I was looking forward to playing this game. And the first hour or two prove that this game has amazing potential. Unfortunately it was all squandered. Let's start with the posititves: the overall feel of the game is cute, innocent and lighthearted to 11. Playing the first stage felt liberating and the mechanics seemed perfect. There's a lot of places to visit, micro challenges to tackle and collectibles to get. Climbing the radio tower is probably the best the game has to…

Unbox is a platformer where you play as a self-delivering box who works for the global postal service. There are three open-world areas you explore. Within these areas, you have to collect a number of stamps either by completing challenges or by finding them in hidden locations before taking on the boss. While the open areas are kind of neat to explore, the missions are boringly basic. Each mission varies but they are usually the most standard challenges you can think of such as collecting 20…

Criminally underrated physics platformed. Movement and momentum take a moment to get used to, but is very much part of the charm of the game in my opinion. There's plenty here for casual players and people looking for a challenge. Shockingly good open world level design for an indie game.

You'd think a 3D Platformer where you rolled around as a cube would be god-awful, but surprisingly it's not. The atmosphere is great, the characters are all charming with unique personalities, the levels are for the most part well-thought-out and never feel empty, the 'unboxing' mechanic is interesting and what makes this game really stand out in my opinion. This is a short and simple, yet charming, 3D Platformer Collectathon reminiscent of Banjo & Kazooie. The main feature is the physics based movement, similar to Monkey Ball, the one difference being that you roll around a cube instead of a ball. This can cause some frustrations during some more precise jumps, but there is no punishment for failing aside returning to one of the many checkpoints around the map. You have 6 "Unbox" points that serve both as you health meter and the number of extra…

This game is charming, relaxing, and really rich in little secrets. On top of that, it has built-in tools to make sure that you can complete its collect-a-thon to 100% without getting frustrated, as any time you are really stuck, you can ask for a visual cue of where the collectible is located. I spent 20 hours engaging in its world and have to say that I came out very satisfied. Deeply recommended for gamers that like to explore and discover without too much focus on combat.

I really wanted this to be better, but I have to go with no. There are just better 3D platformers out there even on PC right now. I don't have a problem with the mapping of the controls, but the jank of them and how difficult it is to ACTUALLY control your character make what should be simple tasks often frustrating or seemingly impossible. This is a combination of the control feeling bad, and bad level design. E.g. needing to roll a ball, uphill, into a curbed switch, with no way to actually…

Unbox is a collectathon in it's core. This is what the game is so you have to come into this game with a gotta collect them all mindset. It's a 3d collectathon "platformer" game, and while I couldn't care any more about the story, and the gameplay is a bit janky overall I had good time with this game and would be interested to see more of this. So how's the game feels like? Well it's kind of weird. The game is essentially split into 3 + hub worlds, each repeating on the collect…

"Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure is pretty damn dreadful, so much so that I gave up on it after a mere two hours of play.  I’m often reticent to compare games to others too heavily, because I like letting them stand on their own merits, but seriously, there are so many high-quality 3D platformers out there that I can’t imagine why you would want to waste your time with this one.  Even without comparing it to other games in the genre, it falls down under scrutiny.  It’s unpleasant to control, tedious…

I give the entire experience a thumb's up. If you're looking for the old school 3D collectathon vibe with varied minigames/challenges and general exploring without a whole lot of actual threat or anything at stake, this is it. It definitely has a Banjo-Kazooie vibe, despite having no ability progression. The main mechanic is that you can "unbox" for an extra jump mid-air. Each layer of box serves as a health point as well, and you can store up to 6. It makes for some interesting maneuvering…

Even though you'd initially not correlate this game with Wuppo, I mention it for 2 reasons: 1) The attention for detail is extraordinary in both games; 2) For a 2D game I was surprisingly immersed into the Wuppo world due to the OST, character development, (humorous) story and atmospheric worlds, so I was motivated and felt to make progress vs. I didn't feel engaged with the 3D world and its characters in Unbox; e.g. a forgettable, mellow OST that works counter-productive, I couldn't care less…

Everything's a bit off. The tone is as for kids but the humor is for older audience. The controls feel sloppy (in addition to the "boxy" movement) and the unboxing mechanic seems as if it's a leftover from alpha-testing where you got stuck all the time. You occasionally get stuck now, too. I also encountered a couple of game-halting bugs. The music is repetitive but decent steel band stuff. All in all it's just not worth the hours.

While the game has a LOT of charm, I simply cannot recommend this game after playing through the initial tutorial and starting the first island for one reason alone: CONTROLS. The game seems to be a platformer, but the controls and character movement of Newbie (your character) are... frustrating, to say the least. This game is best compared to a variety of other collect-a-thon games like super mario, banjo tooie, crash bandicoot, etc. You play as a box and need to collect stamps, tape, outfits, and do quests for other boxes to do that. The gameplay is fun, rolling around as a box is a bit unweildy at the beginning but it becomes more like rolling a lumpy marble than anything. I found that I spent most of the time jumping to get around. The Good: -Theres a box you can talk to at any time and he'll give…

Maybe having self delivering boxes isn’t as good of an idea as it sounds. And that’s what this game’s about. You are a box, you go around completing side quests, helping a postal service with its various jobs while also collecting stuff lying around, evading obstacles and maybe even battle some enemies in the process. What enemies? More boxes of course, an annoying bunch that only serve to make you waste time by blasting you off, force you to participate in a boss fight or represent the…

Maybe back in 2016 this would of been an acceptable game as there were not many new Collect-a-thon platformers coming out at the time or at all really that emulated Banjo Kazooie. But in today's age or even back then, compared to any other game that was already out prior to Unbox and in our current year, this game isn't very good. It feels like a first project for a new studio which I congratulate them as they were successful in creating a platforming game but there is not much substance, it is…

Link to review: https://backloggd.com/u/RedBackLoggd/review/1893454/ Tl;dr - if you’re a veteran gamer like myself, there’s just not enough meat on the bones of Unbox to make it completely worth your while. It’s a beautiful love letter to the Banjo-Kazooie’s of yore, but again, there’s a reason we left those platformers behind in the fifth generation: there’re better game design principles out there.

Beaten - 10 Hours A n64 collectathon platformer throwback game that, unlike Hat in Time or something, takes place in several larger open worlds (not huge, mind you) instead of focused themed levels. Emphasis in these is completing challenges in each level (or enough of them) to take on the boss. There are a lot of extra things to do/collect that you dont HAVE to and largely serve no major purpose other than unlocking new swag for your customizable look. A fun game that I wouldnt hold up in…

Disclaimer: My scores/reviews are almost always based on having bought the game at close to the "lowest historical price" on steam at time of purchase. Quick score: 4/5 Notes: The movement is a bit goofy and simple. But the exploration, world, characters, and "collectathon" gameplay is enjoyable. 9 hours to 100% the game.

It has potential. It has a few unique little things going for it... But rolling around the world as a box feels about as fun as you would expect. Though it's not nearly as bad as say, the stone cube in the Rock of Ages games.
