What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 66 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (148 of 235 positive).
Players praise the oppressive horror atmosphere and unique visual design. [1][2][3] Many reviewers criticize the frustrating stealth mechanics and clunky gameplay. [1][4][5] Some players report technical issues like bugs and save file corruption. [6][7][8]

Unholy is dominantly, a stealth game that features horror aspects and light exploration whilst telling its narrative. Unfortunately, it misses its mark in all facets and became a drudgery to complete. The few redeeming highlights of the game are quickly buried beneath its myriad of troubles. In Unholy’s current stage, particularly at its given price of $AU43.95, I cannot recommend it. Pros Decent indoor environments …

I would recommend NOT BUYING this game, even on sale. It comes with game-breaking issues, like save file corruption. One look in the Discussion forum will show multiple threads about crashing. As for me... there I was, about to finish the short Chapter 4, when you stumble upon some looming 'father figure' in the distance. He froze, I froze, the screen was entirely non responsive and so I had to force-close the game. …

The protagonist of Unholy is a mother who, unfortunately, did not follow the main rule of raising children, which is not to join a sect where the path to world domination leads through the life of her child. Terrible stealth segments, cliche story and ridiculous character design, but the oppressive horror atmosphere is almost perfect. It's not that bad, but unfortunately the good is not like that

The best thing this has going is it's atmosphere with some of the creepiest set designs I've seen. It's very slow paced and not scary by any means but gives you more a sense of pure dread coming your way. You're Dorthea (also vocalist of Windhand HAH) and on a quest to find your son who's been kidnapped by some satan worshipping junkies. Ok, maybe they aren't junkies but they're not in their right mind that's for …

neutral · AI labelView post →Let me just say this game looks great and for the most part is alright, the designs are good and so are the graphics, but its so frustrating and buggy a lot of the time, I've had it where I cannot progress until I reload a save and then it magically works. Most puzzles and encounters you can brute force and rune passed in seconds, and the ones you cant are because of enemies just appearing infront of you or their AI being so bad they don't move out of the way so you cannot progress at all.…

Oh hell yeah, this game feels so warm and nostalgia is sooo thick on first two levels! But then gameplay starts. Controls are strange and unituitive: '1' for flashlight, '2' for AvP predator vision mods and '3' for... i do not know, it's 'rmb' for selecting weapon. And then you should select ammo type! Wtf!? Sound is meh... I was never able to understand, why you go for dubbing…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's okish. It could be really great if there wouldn't be so many frustrating parts. Stealth is pain and it feels too long at the end. The start is a 10 out of 10, but then it goes down to 6 for me. I like it, but sadly it's not as good as it could be

This is a game I have been following for some time and had it on my wishlist because the moment I saw the first teaser trailer, I knew this was going to be a good game with a great story. I am also a big fan of psychological horror games. The execution of the game is remarkably amazing, the story is awesome, the gameplay, while clunky, is…

I`ll give it a thumb halfway up Graphics are beautiful and detailed, but they don't do anything very original with all that talent. I was expecting a creatively nightmarish world but it's essentially a dilapidated city with a bit of alien overgrowth. Monster design is uninspired as well. The main problem of the game is that it's simply not that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Full gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqxNJ1_bVM0 I really tried to enjoy this game, based on the trailer it seemed like an interesting idea but unfortunately it was a frustrating experience with a gameplay that felt like a chore after a while instead of being fun and engaging. You are a mother that a cult took your child and trying to get your child back from them and you travel to an alternate reality called Eternal City. You have to get masks to get different abilities and your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would have liked it more if it were to set in the apartment complex the whole time, it had such an eerie and unsettling yet nostalgic homey feel to it, had so much potential. All in all the game has a draggy story with not much of a body. Some segments were hard to follow and didn't make sense. Oh well. I appreciate the effort as it is an indie game. Its definitely better than most but not a game I can recommend to the average player.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The visualization of this game is at a very high level. The game is beautiful and captivating because a person automatically returns to the 90s of the last century. After passing the first locations, the game changes beyond recognition because we enter a new world where we will have to fight with opponents. The game has an interesting system of fighting opponents. I definitely recommend UNHOLY!!! :)

neutral · AI labelView post →While I was hoping for a great game, it started out feeling like it would be an enjoyable experience. The game quickly felt like it couldn't tell what genre it was, what type of game it was, swapping between overtly simple stealth tactics, to repetitive and simple puzzles, and a story that simply got worse in terms of how it was written the further alone I got at the point I'm at so far with nothing necessarily horrifying within it except for it's story, game play, and apathetically done voice…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately I have to tell you to AVOID Unholy. The "puzzles" are terrible, the "stealth" is unbearably badly implemented and the story and pacing are a mess. The graphics & art design are very good and the Steam description sounds interesting overall...unfortunately. Because it will take around two hours until you realize how bad and boring the gameplay is and how bland the story, so if you are unlucky you wont be able to refund. The worst part has to be the stealth. I don't understand how…

And for the price mark its ok... but lets break it down. Possitives: Atomosphere. That is the absolute selling point. The artistic value put into the atmosphere and the ambient sounds are above and beyond. Horrifying and beautiful. Negatives: the character models are stiff, dialog seems forced to me and the premise is a little too cliche. And once you do come across…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's an evil masked priestess lady sacrificing your son and....she sounds and talks like a soccer mom. It's kinda hard to take her seriously. All in all it's a decent game with thick atmosphere and great visuals. General gameplay is mostly tactical. You sorta need to run around and die first just so you can get a sense of the area and enemy locations. Then you can plan your route.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah if jank was game then this would earn the title. Good atmosphere and level of detail but all the enjoyment from that is sucked out by the enemy AI and oneshot stealth boogaloo. Most of the abilities you get from the mementos are just filler outside of the select few that had constant use for. Worth the ~6h gameplay (if you don't get stumped by puzzles) for 15e but not much more, the story is okay and self-contained so I don't expect there to be follow-up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unholy is too linear and sometimes I forgot what the story was about. I am also very confused on how to use my weapons as there isn't as much of a guide to anything. However, it is done. I completed it and yay me! - I liked the art and it was fun trying to finish it. You should get this for like around ~$15
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the worst game I have played in years. The controls are sloppy and sluggish. The visual presentation- models, textures, animations- are a joke. The script is a very obvious product of late-development rewrites. The mechanics are low effort stealth with some of the dumbest enemy AI I have ever seen. I expected it to be bad, after the demo, and I was still disappointed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid game well worth the price , its similar to silent hill in story with a lot of envirnment puzzles and stealth
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A-g-o-n-y - 5 letters U-n-h-o-l-y - unfortunately 6 letters which ruins the whole set up. But the rest of the joke is they end with y, have an o in in the middle, etc. Look, what I’m trying to say is Unholy reeks of the same problems that made Agony so terrible. It lures you in with a proactive and dangerous spiritual city, gets you extremely excited to explore it, and then punishes you with unskipable cut scenes and awkward save spots. I wish I could recommend this game. I really really…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has some slight frame rate issues and the voice don't sync with the mouth movements, but great game kinda similar to LUST FROM BEYOND but without the nudity stuff. I hope they make other games like this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found the game to be well-designed and quite unique compared to other horror titles. Instead of relying on jump scares, it created a few genuinely creepy moments. The storyline was engaging and kept me invested throughout. Initially, I thought it was strange that your only weapon was a slingshot, but it surprisingly fit the game well. The use of masks added an interesting element, and the mechanics were solid; I didn't encounter any bugs that impacted gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics and the sound are good for this game. It is a normal linear type of game. If you are looking for horror things, you won't find them in this game, but if you like a creepy story and more creepy environment, you will like this game. It is pretty much a mid-core female protagonist game (which is not made by feminist or extreme lefty developers). The price is not bad if you want to support the developer, but that is up to you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite scary this game is so far and also quite interesting. Graphics are good Music and sound are good Great atmosphere Supports UW resolutions The asking price is very high for what it delivers though. Buy it on sale 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, not much to say. Chapter III and I just like. Like the atmosphere, the mask idea, the stealth part (and the no combat for once).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you've been to the Salt Lake Temple, have done a tour and ask "What happened to the golden pages?" or you're driving in downtown Clearwater and you see groups of 10-15 young Scientology people all wearing white shirts and black pants on several blocks crossing traffic then you can quickly relate to the opening of Unholy. Okay... so there was a lot of talk about this game between a circle of friends of mine (and possibly some others online) about how the game was seemingly "broken". The main factor in their argument being that the guards awareness was way too "OP". However... if you play through the story... it kind of explains all of this away if you just pay attention to certain things that…
