What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (625 of 953 positive).
Players praise the game's beautiful art and character designs. [1][2][3] Many note it is a simpler, story-focused version of Darkest Dungeon. [4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize the poor tutorial and lack of tooltips. [1][7][8]

"Wow, this game looks gorgeous. Why are people downvoting it?" Vambrace does indeed look gorgeous. Its art is impeccable, its setting is great, and its story isn't terrible. It's also still super buggy, and it has the single worst UI I've seen in a game. Vambrace is a Darkest Dungeon-like, but more streamlined. Characters have fewer options. They're easier to replace. Trinkets are single slot and scarce, but …

Great game. HORRIBLE tutorial. My 1st hour of play left me with a burning desire to refund this "piece of ***" game. No way to see abilities without going to the separate battle menu. No way to see class names. No way to manage this green goo horror. And don't even start me on the map navigation. Such a cheap knock off to Darkest Dungeon - thought I. ...But the art was excellent. So, I've decided to go and google a …

If you played darkest dungeon, you will almost certainly be disappointed. And to be fair, a game that 'borrows' so much of the trappings of DD should really have 'borrowed' the combat mechanics and depth of progression too, seriously. So if that's what you are looking for, go look at Iratus or something that won't savagely leave you hanging. Now, with this out of the way, Vambrace is a ok game. Severly overpriced at …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game. A bunch of the complaints about the game play were all while comparing this to Darkest Dungeon....and I agree, this game can't compare to that polished masterpiece. People complain the combat isn't as strategic and well constructed as DD and they're right...but I don't find it worse, just simpler. However I can't recommend this game because of one thing. Chapter 5. I won't spoiler it but, even with a fairly long thread in the forum advising the devs on how poorly…

Vigor runs out and then that's it. I HATE vigor! Why even have this mechanic? Why can't I just run every room in all the dungeons? Make a mode for that. * Mechanics for everything except for fighting was confusing. I was asking myself why I didn't…

Is this game a masterpiece? Yes, I think so. It is a rather unique experience. Those survivors have created an underground town and when…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A beautiful, but incomplete experience. Writing this review at 13 hours game time, I feel like I've experienced everything the game has to offer, gameplay wise. Suffice to say, I did not finish the entire story, but at this point, I didn't really want to. The story is not bad; you play as Eve-something Lyric, your standard RPG heroine with a powerful vambrace that can do something other people can't. The cast is great and the art is amazing. The music suits the context well. I feel like this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One big con: You can not save the game during the mission. It makes it not playable for people with limited time for gaming. I tried the first mission three times, never finished, because I have to stop playing and save was not possible. Otherwise gane is good, interesting story and gameplay, but due to not progressing I have to uninstall.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the idea of Darkest Dungeon, but with more story focused and beautiful art. What I dont like is no real roguelike mechanics or RPG mechanics - meaning that there is no possible way to get better, apart from buying new equipment. For example, I went through the whole dungeon to confront first boss, and it wiped my whole party, alright then. I thought I will get better things and try again, well, all the money I had was used just to buy health items to make it to the boss again and it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think Vambrace is one of those games which try to do something different and are terribly misunderstood because of just that. First of all: The game has a history of getting a lot of negative reviews on launch for being "too hard". As a reaction the developers created various patches to make the game "more approachable". I only stumbled upon this game this year, so I can only speak about the "current" game ... but I honestly wonder how the game mightve been at the launch, since I believe…

The world is full of all sorts of spooks, specters and other otherworldly things. Thankfully you are an anime heroine with a special glove that can dispel the ice enough to lead a small group above ground in search of a solution to this problem. Don't bother learning the names of your companions because they will not level up or learn new abilities and every time they die you will just replace them. Be sure to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly I can't recommend the game. The art is so beautiful, the scenery, the setting is great and there are tons of skins for your MC to unlock and they're all so great, it shows they've worked really hard on it. Gameplay is too boring, combat is no fun at all and there is very little diversity in skills. Traveling around is confusing, it took me a long time to make sense of the overworld map and understand where I was supposed to go. If you want to unlock everything in your codex and…

neutral · AI labelView post →Wouldn't recommend Vambrace: Cold Soul. What carries this game is its art. And I mean yeah sure, it looks really good, but nothing worth glossing the rest of the game over. I kind of get what they wanted to go with this game as some heritage to Darkest Dungeon but more plot-focused, but they went so far into creating systems to interact with that they forgot to make them actually interesting. The plot doesn't really have much going for it, it's alright I guess, but there's wayy too much…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Art is beautiful, the premise seems great, the story is engaging.... BUT - the main gameplay loop is not fun at all. This game has obvious similarities to Darkest Dungeon but feels like somebody who neither understood why the combat there was good nor how to properly build an UI for it that feels good implemented it. The game tries to simplify things, but doing so removes so much information (you cannot see how much damage attacks do before performing them directly, no good explanations…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A decent game held back by pervasive mediocrity and a lot of annoying design choices. Nothing about the game besides the art really stands out at all. The story serves its purpose but isn't anything special, the music is fine but forgettable, and the gameplay is fun at first but basically doesn't evolve at all, getting very repetitive and tedious by the end. This is made worse by the fact that there isn't a real sense of progression throughout the game. Your characters don't level up,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My main problem with this game is how it saves your progression, If you enter a "dungeon", you clean the rooms, you take decisions that affect the story, you beat the boss/mini-boss AND YOU CLOSE THE GAME WITHOUT FINISHING THE "DUNGEON" YOU START FROM ROOM 1... the decisions you made are saves, the items you used are gone BUT you still have to beat same enemies again, excepting the boss. You can't level up your companions and there is barely any itemization. The artstyle is nice, the story…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game, I really did. I'm in love with darkest dungeon so I was looking for a similar game and ended up on vambrace: cold soul. The game itself plays similarly to darkest dungeon with two key differences: polish and fairness. Where darkest dungeon punishes you for wrong moves and risky actions (though I should mention luck is also a part of the game but I believe it is done more tastefully) vambrace punishes you for its own awful design. Anywhere from locking the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game all in all looks nice and has an interesting story, with good mechanics but it very mutch irritates me that your companions that you bring to explore are no more than throwaway pawns. There is very limited interaction with them and they can not progress in any way. You just swap them if they die or become obsolete with new ones for free.... This makes the game feel very inorganic and breaks the immersion for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Darkest Dungeon's annoying younger sibling. Darkest Dungeon is going through its Poe/Lovecraft phase. It is helping stage Macbeth at the community theatre and pretends very hard to enjoy absinthe. Vambrace is into anime and k-pop, and actually buys into the idea that Jordan Peterson is a martyr for free speech. Darkest Dungeon trains épée fencing, and dreams of Heidelberg duelling scars. Vambrace is very proud of its yellow belt in TKD from the McDojang at the mall. Darkest Dungeon loves…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story of the game is interesting. There are a few things I don't find really appealing there, but the story works. The gameplay itself feels very tedious and the combat isn't really fun. It feels like Darkest Dungeons, but clunkier, slower, less engaging and less fun. I got it while it was on sale and I'm thankful for that. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy it. It's just not that fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good artstyle, terrible presentation. Game does everything to make it hard for the player to get into it with ease. So much info dump, unnecessary dialogs and after a while you are lost, you dnt know what to do. It could havebeen better if they just made this game something like Life of Suffering of Sir Brante. But copying Darkest Dungeon in a very wrong formula leads to frustration. Probably there are some interesting mechanics in the game, or at least i could have tried the combat and gotten…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played this game extensively on Xbox One through Game Pass. I enjoyed it so much that I had to buy it again on Steam. The biggest issue I think people have is that they came in hoping for Darkest Dungeon with babes in it, but that isn't the case for this game. While it does have Darkest Dungeon's combat traits, it's a much simpler game and there's nothing wrong with that because the developers have crafted a much bigger world packed with characters and lore. The aesthetics are also so…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was very hopeful for the game as it bears a strong resemblance to Darkest Dungeon, which I loved, however I didn't have nearly as much fun. There was a lot of running around, talking to people, I even spent a while wandering around trying to figure out where to go next only to have to restart the chapter as my resources ran out. It would be nice if you didn't have to consult a separate menu to figure out what the combat actions did.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The whole side quest system is very unclear, the game doesn't tell you that if you choose a option you can just fail a quest just then and there. Some side quests don't even have a marker on the map, do you expect me to remember EVERYONE'S names? The first side quest of the game where you can choose to give an item to 2 different people... I didn't meet one of them (bug probably) and the game was acting like I did the whole time, so i had no idea about the context of the choice, and if you…

The characters are well drawn and there's a good ongoing story with some good world building. One of the nice bits was finding the various sub-quests so that you could get different costumes for the main character. The party system is a bit flexible, you can go to a 'recruitment board' and recruit different classes for your team and try…

A strong narrative element with a simple but well told story populated by charming characters brought to life with a nice art style. Gameplay might be a bit simple, but enough to keep you busy through the story and with a curious way to implement side quests, choice and consequences. At no point did I feel like I needed more elements thrown into the game. There's been a lot of love poured into this, and it shows. You can tell they…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Vambrace it's not a bad game, considering the relatively small team that created it. Visually is very pleasing, with a style strongly reminiscent of korean manwha. Quite a bit of effort went into world building and the story, despite the fact that it seems to follow a checklist of all the cliches of the genre (mysterious father missing - check; enemy who turns out to be on the same side - check; betrayal of the supposed friend - check ... and so on, with unerring precision). From the point of…

Vambrace: Cold Soul takes inspiration from the gothic fantasy of Castlevania, the deep lore of games like TES:V, the replayability of roguelites like Darkest Dungeon, and the sweeping, character-driven epics of JRPGs. Once I understood the camping mechanics, I finished the rest of the game without any wipes or retreat on Cold Soul difficulty, starting from Chapter 2. This is primarily due to the oversimplification of battle stats into a single Combat stat. Dislikes - No keybinds. - UI is clunky at times. No tooltip for enemy status effects. After a major…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A decent RPG with very slight roguelike elements. The story and world building is interesting. I really enjoyed it, but I can't recommend it without some caveats. There's just not enough room for experimentation with team bulding with being forced to bring along the main character in every run and not having space for extra units. I mostly only played the same team composition during my playthroughs. Event variety in runs is also a bit lacking and gets repetitive. Other than that, I enjoyed the…

There might be recency bias, but I genuinely think it's one of the best games I've ever played. **Persona 5 Royal** isn't super far behind, was also great. Worst game I finished was **Starfield**. Did not see that coming. Worst overall was **Vambrace: Cold Soul.** Incredibly gorgeous game with a complete disaster of a core gameplay loop.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's pretty mediocre as Darkest Dungeon clone, but its real value lies in artstyle, story and setting, which are all pretty interesting and well fleshed out. The game is pretty short and linear, but can be quite engaging if you are into narrative driven games. Gameplay is rather shallow and repetitive, but it's fortunately unobstructive and due to how short the game is, it doesn't become an issue. Controller is not required but recommended as it makes the whole experience much more smooth.

But the farther I've got into the game, the more I understood what all of this is about- some beautiful art and most of all: the story and interaction with the characters within. If you up for a somewhat mechanically clunky (sometimes frustrating) but storywise interesting told Darkest Dungeon type, you might enjoy…

I'm surprised it's got mixed reviews, but it seems a lot of people are comparing Vambrace to Darkest Dungeon. I haven't played the latter, so I cannot comment on that. What I can share, though, are my experiences playing Vambrace: What is this game? Your aim is to defeat a boss in each map and loot the "dungeons" within it. The dungeons use a timer and your crew loses stamina…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's certainly a game, but Im not sure what the hype is all about, unless its just for the character design. The gameplay is pretty repetitive, and not all that interesting. I think they need to have more tool tips for the attacks and what things do because it's not very intuitive. Basic QoL things would be a big boost I feel.

I played this game back in 2019 for the first time and I honestly hated it, but now I have to commend the developers for saving this game with their updates. The game isn't perfect but you can feel the passion of the developers. I would love a continuation in this world where the devs have the opportunity to show what they have learned. A special…

I am now trying to 100% the achievements, sadly, you can not save the game before making a choice. You have to stay with whatever choice you make. Once you finish the game once, you can restart the game (deal with the long intro AGAIN) and select a chapter. The story is good, the gameplay is kinda fun, RPG-like. I like the alternative outfits I have gotten so far.

The story was deeper than expected, and there's many interesting mechanics that may come as a surprise. The worst thing you can do is go in thinking this plays exactly like a different game just because of how it looks.
