positive · AI labelView post →When people say that some concept is too complicated for voters to understand, I remember Stephen Sondheim's line about the "West Side Story" movie. He was told that it didn't have "hummable" songs. Then United Artists spent a ton of $ promoting it, the movie was a hit, and suddenly it was hummable.
neutral · AI labelView post →"Everything's free in America... For a small fee in America." from West Side Story (the movie was in 1961)
neutral · AI labelView post →My answers are: Harrison Ford in Temple of Doom (deeply flawed movie; deeply hot man) Ariana DeBose in West Side Story (Anita is already a sexy role, but DeBose brings a great deal of verve and sensuality to it on her own)

Still a nice little movie, though! I'll give it that!
neutral · AI labelView post →Just recorded a podcast in which I argue the 2021 film of "West Side Story" is far superior to the 1961 version. Will alert you when it posts, and at that point, I will taunt the haters.
positive · AI labelView post →Stephen Sondheim had a line about how he was told "West Side Story" lacked hummable melodies. Then Hollywood adapted it and put a ton of money into advertising it. "The movie was a huge hit and suddenly everybody thought the tunes were hummable." Five years and more than $100m made this hummable.

Deborah Kerr, in 'The King and I'. Audrey Hepburn in 'My Fair Lady'. There were others too. She was not credited on any of the film titles.
neutral · AI labelView post →I love the 1961 film of West Side Story & had resisted watching the 2021 Steven Spielberg version because I thought I wouldn’t like it as much. My sister talked me into it and I’m happy to report I was completely wrong and the new version is terrific. Closer to the stage show & beautifully sung
positive · AI labelView post →By the late 1950s, the neighborhood was pulverized. In a bitter twist of irony, before the final tenements fell, director Jerome Robbins used the rubble of San Juan Hill to film the opening gang-rivalry scenes of the 1961 movie West Side Story. neutral · AI labelView post →a lot of us have been revisiting Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY, and I've still never seen a movie strike a better balance between dreamy old-hollywood visuals and a more contemporary kind of heightened realism, often within a single shot. for me, it's the platonic ideal of a modern musical
positive · AI labelView post →was walking along all innocently this morning when I finally got a joke in West Side Story, a movie I first saw when I was eight.
neutral · AI labelView post →Joe Caroff, West Side Story movie poster, United States, 1961 Caroff, designer of book covers, posters, and logos, including the “007” for the James Bond franchise, died on Sunday, just before his 104th birthday. Among his iconic creations was this poster often misattributed to Saul Bass.
neutral · AI labelView post →Saw this movie Romeo + Juliet, what a rip-off of West Side Story.
neutral · AI labelView post →When my niece was a tween, I took her to see West Side Story in theaters, her first time really going to see a serious “grown-up” movie. We get to the tragic ending, fade to black, and she says, loudly, “What the FUCK” Her second comment was “oh hey that was the same story as Gnomeo & Juliet”
neutral · AI labelView post →I loved The Fabelmans and West Side Story so much I will see any movie Spielberg makes, forever. But it feels like he keeps making movies that he’s convinced will spread the word that aliens exist, and instead, we keep responding by saying, what a fun summer movie! It’s heartbreaking
positive · AI labelView post →#Edwards1000SixtiesMovies 312/1000: THE HAUNTING I love everything about this horror movie from Robert Wise (the director of the musical classics West Side Story and Sound of Music). Its eerie cinematography and genuine expressions of terror from the cast is just totally perfection!!!
neutral · AI labelView post →My ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review of WEST SIDE STORY boxd.it/fmPNmF Not without issues viewed thru 2026 lens, but still game-changer for inventive street choreography, critique of violence & racism, powerhouse score. Music ❤️: TONIGHT QUINTET Performance ❤️: Fiery Rita Moreno Packs emotional wallop. #filmsky 📽

neutral · AI labelView post →trying to think about what Spielberg's actual best movie about America is. Lincoln and Private Ryan are obvious picks. West Side Story. Jaws, certainly. Sugarland. but i think the greatest may be Catch Me if You Can.
neutral · AI labelView post →American graphic artist Joe Caroff has died at 103. His designs included book covers such as Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead and film posters such as the original West Side Story. He also designed the 007/Pistol James Bond logo. #RIPJoeCaroff

positive · AI labelView post →10 September 1914 – 2005 Robert Wise, 91, US filmmaker. 4 Oscars: West Side Story (Director, Producer) The Sound of Music (Director, Producer) 3 Oscar nominations: Citizen Kane (film editor) * I Want to Live! * The Sand Pebbles Curse of the Cat People * The Day the Earth Stood Still * The Haunting
neutral · AI labelView post →At @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social to see Spielberg’s West Side Story, a movie that I, like almost everyone, missed because 2021 but about which I’ve heard great things. Always feel like I’m with my people when there are lot of solo moviegoers besides me in the audience.
neutral · AI labelView post →#Edwards1000SixtiesMovies 102/1000: WEST SIDE STORY This film is superbly bold in everything--the musical numbers, the rich color cinematography, exuberant chereography, and the gorgeous costumes. Despite standing on its own, it still pulls off as one of the best Shakespeare film adaptations.
positive · AI labelView post →I should know better by now not to put on Spielberg’s WEST SIDE STORY while trying to do anything else. Jesus, this movie.
positive · AI labelView post →#NowWatching WEST SIDE STORY (1961). Directors: Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins. Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer. To be brief, WSS ranks in my top ten films of all time. Rewatch. #filmsky 📽

positive · AI labelView post →Leonard Bernstein was BOTD in 1918 & died in 1990 at 72. He composed the music for "West Side Story" while 3 fellow gay or bi Jews also collaborated on the Broadway musical & film, Stephen Sondheim & Arthur Laurents, lyrics & book, and Jerome Robbins, co-director & choreographer
neutral · AI labelView post →I think a lot about how Michael Bay's favorite movie is West Side Story, and how when asked why, he's like "well, it's the motion." Michael Bay is a guy who makes movies that do the most movie possible thing at every single point. He is always making the moviest-movie to ever movie.

positive · AI labelView post →I rewatched West Side Story (1961) & can’t think of another classic Oscar-winning film whose main cast members are still with us (w/the exception of Natalie Wood). Rita Moreno is 94, George Chakiris is 93, Richard Beymer is 88, Russ Tamblyn is 91. Impressive. I’d like to think it’s all that dancing.

neutral · AI labelView post →West Side Story is a great movie but you can praise it without randomly pitting two filmmakers against each other and pretending that Marty hasn't made anything that noteworthy in the last 25 years
neutral · AI labelView post →Apropos of nothing, this video’s dance sequence is better directed than any movie musical of the past 20 years (excepting Spielberg’s West Side Story). youtu.be/Qfi9JpgMc2U?...
neutral · AI labelView post →I adored Rita Moreno’s performance of “America” in West Side Story. The song is about racism & the injustice of how Puerto Ricans were not seen as Americans. West Side Story’s themes, & most of the music stands the test of time. BTW, she is one of the very few people who have all four awards (EGAT)
