What people are saying
Split audience: fun gameplay but dead player count.
Many players praise the gameplay as polished and fun, especially with friends. One player calls it "Most fun I've had in ages" and another says it is a GEM of a game. [3][11]
However, the game is widely described as dead due to a very low player base, with many urging a free-to-play model to revive it. One player notes "Game is essentially dead, maybe 40 to 80ish players on a good day" and another says "The game is dying." [8][2]

Critics, per Wikipedia
Wildgate received "mixed or average" reviews from critics on PC and Xbox Series X/S whilst it received "generally favourable" reviews from critics on PlayStation 5, according to review aggregator site Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received strong approval, being recommended by 55% of critics. Game Informer rated the game 8/10 and wrote: "While its pacing can be hit or miss due to its procedural map generation and unpredictable player behavior, Wildgate stands out amidst other PvPvE multiplayer offerings." IGN rated it 7/10 and described how the four-player "mayhem makes for a wild ride." PC Gamer was more critical, rating the game 6/10, and wrote:…

The game is dead because they couldn't grow the core content fast enough (or change monetization models to match their target market/play appeal). If you got to play Wildgate at launch, you know the thrills it provided! But at this point with ~30-40 players online any given day during peak hours, it's dead. They could *maybe* revive this with an F2P re-release that is paired with a new map region, major new POIs, and lots more content along with a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoyed this game and would like to play more, but the development team removed Treasure Hunt, the only game mode my partner and I enjoy playing together. I know the developer's justification for doing so (it's temporary, they're experimenting), but I really don't like that a game I paid for and has supposedly exited early access is "experimenting" by removing game modes. It's not even in the rotation of modes they setup, so we just don't get an opportunity to have fun playing even…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Game Itself - What Works: I'm so incredibly torn because this is an amazing game when it works. I love the fact that it has the "hands on" experience as Sea of Thieves does with steering the ship, shooting, repairing etc. It is like an extraction shooter take on battle royale because the map doesn't get smaller but there is an objective and you can still technically fight others until you're the last standing. It's great because it allows players of different kinds to both win, by either…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hope you guys do something to bring this game back to life....make it free! make it to where people who own the game has 3 free invites for friends or SOMETHING. Game is great, just didnt get enough hype..
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DEAD game thats unfortunate please make this game free! to get the game back alive ASAP!!!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A dreadful growing trend in recent PvP games is that they simply wont succeed with a full price tag F2P, friend codes, or literally anything to lower the barrier to entry may single hand be able to revive this game. But this likely won't happen, sealing its fate the same way Deceive Inc sealed its tomb by simply not being proactive in keeping their playerbase.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the first and only game that actually banned me from the discussion forums after suggesting that it goes free to play becuase of the low player count. I wasn't being rude or toxic, just a mere suggestion and I got banned. At the time of writing this it has 463 players, and it's currently free to play for a few days...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The ONLY reason I don't recommend this game is because it's completely dead. I actually thought the gameplay loop and everything was pretty fun and satisfying but matchmaking takes forever, and even then I never saw another player in game. The PvE elements aren't really fleshed out enough to make it worth playing PvE only, it needs the PvP element. If this game suddenly gets a ton of players I'll be back, but I don't see that happening. Edit: Y'all apparently don't understand how Steam reviews…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is dying. There is no hiding that fact. But in my honest opinion, this game should be blowing up. There are a few reasons why that might be, but I wouldn't blame the game devs, but perhaps probably the publishers. Regardless, this game is very polished and fun. The devs are adding new content and adjusting existing content basically every 2 weeks. And when I say new content, I mean meaningful content. New guns, hardpoints, hazards and such have been regularly trickling into the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was doomed from the start. The price of entry for a live service game, little marketing, and hoping "by former blizzard devs/founder" would help, means the game had nothing to entice new players to join. It's a pity, cause it had a fun gameplay loop. Would have probably caught lightning in a bottle if it was f2p with cosmetic microtransactions To add to that, in the OCE region, on launch day queues took way too long to pop, and any that did had noticeable lag for me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Most fun I've had in ages. infinitely better with a group of friends. Fast, Super high peaks of action and fun with deep strategy and planning if you choose to. DEVS, SELL THIS GAME IN PACKS OF FOUR AT A DISCOUNT, PLEASE.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All they have to do is make it a free to play model with skins and give currently paid players some currency for it and people will flock to this game like crazy with much more money flowing in. Until then there will never be enough players on the servers so don't buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blast for the first 2 or 3 weeks. Then it died. Devs fumbled hard. Big price tag, 0 promo and advertising = very few new players, no MMR (veterans steamrolled everyone in the lobby 95% of the time), etc. There's 11 ppl playing now. Don't ever buy it, just look at some cool videos on YT. Unfortunately, this game will never be playable again
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →please make it free to play or just very cheap, 9 playing an hour ago, 21 24-hour peak It makes me sad to see what happened to this game, I really liked it. But I can't suggest it to my friends because the players are gone
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wildgate had so much potential. In an era of F2P game with micro transaction, Wildgate has both an upfront price & micro transactions... Lost all its momentum in less than 2 months. Treasure hunt mode still playable since you can "solo" there easily. but it's not as fun. Artefact hunt, the main fun game mode (PvPvE), is dead. Fleet battle, the other fun game mode, is even more dead. Do not buy. Good bye.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's technically a great game, but the player count is to low for it to be fun. The players that are left most often don't communicate, or get angry, or both. It's a death spiral that ensures the game will fail.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: Hey Devs if youre reading this, make this free to play you absolute dummies. This game was a blast - when it was alive. It had small issues, but when you compare it to the issues of similare games released like Sand: Raiders of Sophie, this was a mostly flawless game that ran extremely smooth. Very sad to see it go but with days saying 0 logins, this game is long passed dead and the body cold. Maybe they will go free to play and get a breath of player...doubt it. I'm giving the thumbs…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game, that is sadly dead now due to nearly nonexistent player base. If you missed it, you missed it. Rest in peace, Wildgate.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →should be free to play and then just make your money off of cosmetics or something. game seems cool but no way is anyone going to pay for a game with hardly any people playing it. first time I have even heard of this game and its right up my alley. best of luck cause this seems like a good game and I hate to see people make something cool and have it fail. but yea reading the comments and then checking the player count seems like the way to save this would be free to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I stuck with the game as the the population dwindled. And I mean dwindled. Went from a peak of 8k players to a daily high of maybe 100. Of those, a solid few use aimbot and will snipe you while appearing as a tiny dot. I and others have shown the program used and the devs have done nothing as the same ppl still play and just dominate everyone. I'm fine with ppl being better than me, i expect it, but when it's obvious cheating, it isn't worth trying. If you buy, you will wait for 15+…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very much enjoyed tutorial, but that is about as far as you're able to get currently. Sat in a queue for 30 minutes waiting to find any other player. Game desperately needs a server browser, find a part, or the ability to just join randoms since player count is non-existent. You're stuck hosting ship with no way to group with random players outside of your direct friends list.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beta was amazing. I understand the devs didn't want to go F2P but the greedy price tag of $30 killed the game.

neutral · AI labelView post →I will not go into details about the whole controversy, about why this game didn't take off. I want to bring a message across: There was never a better time to play Wildgate. Click the Free Trial and try it out for free. No need to buy it at once. Take your time. See if you like it. Even if the Steamchart says otherwise, this game has crossplay. Since it was recently free to get on Epic, there is a great influx of people playing right now. Ques don't take as long as their estimate and all…

neutral · AI labelView post →Free to play, when? Devs need to save the game with F2P and make money off cosmetics/battle pass. I guarantee players would rather buy battle pass for 3-6 months to cover the original cost, and would continue to buy battle pass if you continue to develop the game, add cosmetics, add more ai mobs. Give investing players who paid the $30 their battle pass free and extra content/cosmetics for buying the game. Illustrious titles or more custom ship names maybe? The player base is there and is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warning: Microtransaction Infested Game This game is infested with a mobile app like cash shop for unlocking in-game currency and features. Whether these are purely cosmetic or they alter your gaming experience significantly, this gamer gouging practice is unethical and insulting to gamers, especially when applied to such a low quality shovelware game. Gamers should be cautious and consider avoiding this game for that reason alone. Note: Dead PvP game This game contains no meaningful…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Massive potential, but completely unplayable right now. Wild Gate clearly has some great core ideas, but it suffers from one fatal issue: a completely dead player base. Because the game is entirely dependent on online matchmaking, it is currently impossible to actually play. I spent forever waiting in queues and couldn't find a single session. Beyond the matchmaking ghost town, the current state of the game has some major red flags. It gives off strong "Overwatch developer" vibes, meaning it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is essentially dead, maybe 40 to 80ish players on a good day. Game has potential but it seriously needs to go free to play to survive at this point. The action of being raided or raiding another ship is honestly pretty fun especially with friends. I want this game to survive and have some crazy good recovery story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was a really fun game. I had a lot of fun figuring it out. However, once I figured out rotations and scouting and how to order everyone on the ship around, winning became a matter of course. After that it became a bit dry. I did get 15 hours of high-brain-usage, intense fun out of it, and I am very satisfied. In the end, there wasn't really anything keeping me with the game. I know that that is not inherently bad. I would like to tell the developers and designers and everyone who worked on…

Players (called “Prospectors”) team up in small crews to venture into a hostile and mysterious region of space in search of an ancient relic known as the Artifact. @playwildgate.com

positive · AI labelView post →The Great ex blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime which is CEO of Moonshot Games just proved how incompetent he is and stubborn by letting this quite interesting and fun game go to waste by not going F2P....Dead game save your money peeps.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game was an amazing game, very sad it died 16/10 elite game design and build quality
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I miss when "gameplay" trailers had significant voiceover to explain what the game is about vs. just watching the gameplay with the character's shoutouts and action. I watched a trailer for Wildgate and was like, "Ok... but what is this game about?"
negative · AI labelView post →This game had a window of sucess that got lost by short term vision of the price tag decision, during it beta it was on a hype and being promoted in the streamer communitys, however what lead to it failure is that the viewers thought it was a free to play game, and so never got to play it, the devs also listened to much to early on to complainers and didn't give wider range of people to try it when it had it original hyped buidl. That plus a cash shop and full price lead to negative reaction…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Player base is dead because of the focus being on predatory currencies for cosmetics rather than gameplay. Nice concept and potential but poorly optimized for your PC and players having fun instead of big wigs making money. Not worth the 20$ i paid for it on sale
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The most spectacular part about Wildgate is that someone thought that it warranted a $30 price tag in 2025. As of this writing, It has a 24-hour peak of 52 people less than 4 months after launch. We got scammed, y'all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried the game a few months after launch — impressed with the polished, satisfying gameplay loop, but it wasn't solo-friendly enough for me, so I bounced. Came back for the major Emergence patch. Huge difference. The Outlaw ship makes solo play genuinely viable: out in the Reach, clearing PvE objectives, hunting Artifacts, escaping with your loot. The new PvE mode is also a great entry point for newcomers — low pressure, good way to learn before throwing yourself into the chaos. Hoping…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got it for free on epic games. Worth buying though after that. Fun game that doesnt lag.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I LOVE IT! Despite the various negative reviews I've decided to try this game, thanks to the Free-To-Play weekend. (EDIT: I've bought it right afterwards, on both Steam and PS5!) I want to wholeheartedly admit that this is truly a GEM of a game, that has the potential (and, based on my preferences, deserves) to get big, and I look forward to seeing its community grow! The attention to detail is astounding: I love the characters, the maps, the ships and the objectives; this, paired with the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wildgate was an amazing game and I hope by some miracle the player base comes back.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Space-Sea of Thieves, Overwatch Extraction-shooter. Now that comparison's out of the way, this game has potential, and I'd hate to see it squandered because of the live-service model. And that model is not working right now. GAME LIKENESS Sea of Thieves - You have a ship, it can get damaged, you heal your ship wherever it needs fixing, you steal loot from the map and others, and leave. It's a simple loop, but where Sea has you load the game once and you play for as long as you like, this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EXCITEMENT! Moonshot Games announced their first game today: Wildgate. I had the pleasure of writing the soundtrack! I'm so thrilled to finally be able to talk about it. The pedigree of the dev team speaks for itself, and the game itself is truly a blast. #Wildgate www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2jv...
positive · AI labelView post →Great game, but devs are slow to adopt feedback. A F2P Model would save it. Unfortunately at this time it is a dead game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, when I watched the game's trailer, I thought, "Wow, it's Sea of Thieves, but in space, cooler, with richer visuals and cool mechanics!" But you should have seen my disappointed expression after the first two matches (one with bots and one with real players) – the game has TOO many mechanics that you have to use in a 20-30-minute match. I don't know how to describe it, but those who played SoT will probably understand – in SoT, you have your own small, yet still intricate and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wildgate got half a million wishlists during Steam Next Fest but its all-time player peak since launch is under 8k. Doesn’t add up to me. You owe it to yourself to check out one of the best multiplayer games of the past few years. www.dbltap.com/reviews/wild...
positive · AI labelView post →Incompetent developers, ridiculous pricing, zero marketing. All that is said thousands of times before me. Awesome and fun game, a lot of potential. Yet it doesnt matter anymore, as its dead in a ditch, and playercount is 4 as of 12th of August. I wish I could refund it... R.I.P.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wildgate developer Moonshot Games confirms layoffs.
neutral · AI labelView post →Wildgate — Review Wildgate is a technically well-made game. Animations are smooth, mechanics feel solid, performance is stable, and the graphics are clean. The gameplay is enjoyable — even a bit simple, but in a relaxing way. Controls are excellent both for characters and for piloting the ship. You quickly feel comfortable playing. Problems Lobby system The lobby feels like a missed opportunity. It would work much better as a persistent world similar to Sea of Thieves — you spawn…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, in its current stage, you are not able to experience the game at all. At the time of this review, the 24 hour peak current players is 23. You cannot get into matches and if you do you its more of a pve experience and OH BOY the AI on the bots you play against is TERRIBLE. Its a shame, back in the beta, the game was a BLAST!!! Currently buying this game at any price is a waste of your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game but ppl expect free2play nowadays and hard to find someone to play with :(
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It hurts me to write this, because I really enjoyed the game, but with player counts not even reaching 30s most of the time, and the weird decision to add more gamemodes and split those who are playing even more, the chances of getting into a multiplayer game rest well at zero. So even if the game itself is fun, unless you either have 10-20 friends ready to buy the game, or are willing to play against the ai, the game isn't playable. In my opinion he only chance this game has is going free to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am obsessed with this game, so much so that I purchased it on steam (despite already owning it on epic) just so I could review it and say it is not a dead game. People who say it is a dead game are not interacting with the community and this is not a game of convenience. I can't think of a game that isn't live service/micro-transaction filled where you can join a queue and get a game immediately. Join the Discord and you will find some crew mates to play with who will take the time to teach…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great game that didn't get enough marketing and the price of entry was too high. Shame that it will die.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →got it on sale for 10$ fun, but small player base please spread the word :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My friends and i "had" a great time in wildgate. Unfortunately, since there arent a lot of players so we would get absolutely and utterly curb stomped. And i dont mean, wow that was close. It was wow, wtf just happened... total annihilation... over and over and over again. We gave up after barely wining 1 out several matches. Holey sweat fest batman. Great game tho. But daym, no thanks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has insane potential. Thanks to the free week on Epic Games, online has increased significantly, but not enough to form a solid community in a long run. The developers really need to make the game ftp and focus on in game transactions in order to stay afloat
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the beta, this game was—quite literally—perfect. Every detail felt finely tuned, and the pacing was tight and exhilarating. I was completely hooked until the beta ended. But sadly, the full release feels like a watered-down version of what once had so much potential. The action that once felt fast and intense is now unbearably slow. Weapons and utilities no longer feel satisfying to use, and the core gameplay loop has lost its punch. The devs have nerfed the guns so heavily that they don’t…
