Wizard of Legend is an indie roguelike video game released by American studio Contingent99 and Humble Bundle in May 2018. Funded through Kickstarter in 2016, players take control of a wizard as they traverse a procedurally generated dungeon, using a wide variety of spells to defeat mobs, three major bosses, and a final boss to earn the title "Wizard of Legend". I've spent quite a while trying to determine why I like old roguelike games (like Rogue, Nethack, Angband) but always eventually hate roguelites I attempt to play and finally while playing this it clicked for me. It's not the grind itself, it's the blatantly manipulative manner in which the grind is imposed upon you. Go look up any guide for this game right now, you'll come across two key phrases in one form or …

This roguelike can and just might sink its hooks into you like an ex you can't forget about, but that's assuming you can get a girlfriend to begin with when you have this game to keep you company and show you the ups and downs of a roguelationship. You'll have beautiful firsts, like the first time you cast a signature that chunks practically 1/3 of the miniboss's HP away in a single blast, or the first time WoL …

This game makes you feel like a god while still getting beat around. For a while, I felt impartial to this game, getting stuck of the second of 4 bosses for most of my runs. But then it clicked. At first, enemy patterns screw you up constantly. Bad positioning and prioritization will get you major damage, you struggle with the timing of your spells, and that one boss just has an attack you can’t dodge (if it’s the …

Absolutely loved it, super fun combo crafting, intense/fun bosses, fun game loop, cool builds with the relics. Just get this game and completely ignore WoL 2. It's much closer to a pure roguelike than most bc despite unlocking new spells and relics there is a hard cap on how many you choose to start with per run, though you still unlock other benefits like outfits and different but usually better spells Oh yea it's …

This is probably my favorite rogue lite. Probably the only one too where I’ve unlocked EVERYTHING. I’m a teacher, so I spent a good summer staying up until 3 am—listening to full albums on repeat in the background—just grinding on this game. Super fun time. If only Wizard of Legend 2 had been good! :(

Players who liked Wizard of Legend talk about fluid and satisfying combat system; those who didn't talk about unfair difficulty and stunlock issues. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received generally favourable reviews upon its release in May 2018, holding a score of 76/100 on Metacritic. Kevin McClusky of Destructoid awarded it 6/10, saying "Spell effects are beautifully animated, and combat feels fluid and entertaining." but criticised frame skips on the Nintendo Switch edition of the game. Dominic Tarason of Rock, Paper, Shotgun said "Wizard of Legend is a good, if lopsided game. The moment-to-moment combat is highly flexible and seldom anything less than satisfying, especially in co-op.", but criticised the repetition of the dungeon, saying "If you can overlook the repetition in targets and mix up your own playstyle, this one’s an easy recommendation, but…

neutral · AI labelView post →5/10 I dont get the hype around this game, The problem might be me but the isometric geometry feels awkward to me, and combat ends up being mostly basic attacks while the fun spells sit on cooldown. Shops, upgrades, and progression all feel underwhelming, with nothinfg that really changes how you play. Huge potential, but wasted on dull design choices.

I had memories of me not being good enough and therefore I moved to other games. I recently came back to this game - after one or two years - and I was able to beat the final boss, no sweat. I played some more runs and I realized how this game could have been so much better... The idea is great, the amount of content is huge, the gameplay loop is addicting and the concept of customizing my…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After several hours of playing, I can honestly say this: Wizard of Legend is an extremely shallow and boring roguelike that pretends to have progression, but in reality just wastes your time. The biggest issue with this game is the complete lack of meaningful progression. You keep doing the exact same thing over and over again without any real sense of growth. Yes, you can buy new spells, but most of them feel either identical to what you already have or straight-up useless. What makes it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice art style, great tutorial, strong victory ending. However. - stunlock hell; getting hit once usually opens you up for more attacks from enemy groups, easily deleting 25% of your healthbar in a moment - stunlock hell is even worse by bosses, where a single touch can end your run if you're unlucky (especially in the final stretch) - the jazz music doesn't fit and feels very repetitive (I muted the music a couple runs in, I don't know if it changes on later floors) - it's not possible…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Working on a roguelike game inspired by Hades and Wizard of Legend. Do you think pixel art, solid mechanics, and a simple plot could still be interesting to players? Or is this genre overused? #indiegames #SoloGameDev #gamedev
neutral · AI labelView post →#VideoGameBacklog "Wizard of Legend" (PC, 2018) is a fast-paced action game with wizardry. Enemies hit hard and, without much healing, grinding feels required from the outset. Arcana cooldowns are a bit tough to gauge in this mostly excellent game. Pixel art and jazz music are amazing! #indiegames

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →People look at me funny when I say it but this is the best roguelike I have ever played. I know you have 200 hours in Hades but I like my successes more skill based than time based. 11/10 but I have yet to beat the secret boss phase so I may be a complete and utter fraud.

neutral · AI labelView post →Wizard of Legend is a pretty neat game. It's a rougelike where you sling magic spells, with a good variety of spells, relics, and such to have access to. I-frames largely don't exist, so getting comboed to death or stuck by enemies happens a bit, but the core game is cool. Versus mode is also sick.
positive · AI labelView post →Got the first one purely because it had soundtrack by Sidewalks & Skeletons. Turned out to be a pretty good game. Hopefully this one won't go the way of Wizard of Legend 2 and turn into a big disappointment.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hard to see what is going on, hard to move and hard to cast spells as you wish. 1/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It looks cool in the trailer, but I found it very frustrating. Healing is almost nonexistent, so every time you take damage it feels terrible because it shortens your run (roguelite). Your defensive capabilities suck. You can dash, or you can hitstun enemies with your spells. Bad timing or bad aim will likely get you hit. The ability restrictions feel terrible. You're primarily spamming your short-range basic ability because your other two abilities have a cooldown. You're primarily…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's alright, but the only selling point for the game is the combo stuff with some magic. otherwise it's EXTREMELY generic, with just some basic elemental theming between areas and enemies. there is no story except for a flimsy, generic thing about wizard tournaments or something. with that in mind, I simply can't in good faith recommend this game. if you're looking for something action-packed but mindless, without much depth beyond combos with five or so abilities, gradually unlocked by…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a version of Wizard of Legend that's 97% positive on steam. That version has more story, more lore, and a bunch of roguelike design staples like dash i-frames, slower and weaker enemy hordes, and tankier but less powerful bosses, correcting most of the complaints you'll see in the negative reviews. But it's also a much worse game. The goal of Wizard of Legend is to make you feel like a legitimate wizard fighting other legitimate wizards. It's a power fantasy where you start out pretty…

positive · AI labelView post →This is a hard review to write. I really enjoyed Hades and decided to try Wizard of Legend. It’s not a bad game, but I didn’t like no I frames on dashes. No meta progression hurts the game a lot at least to me. Mindlessly unlocking spells and relics and robes I will never use is silly. At least some sort of stat boost or unlocking additional relics and spells to start your run would give an incentive to keep playing an unlocking. There’s also some weird things like if a cursed relic drops…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At $16 I suppose you're almost getting what you pay for, but similar games at the same price point offer a much better experience. This game is fairly rough around the edges. Combat is not especially satisfying, and the controls could be a lot tighter. Spells are aimed, but if you play on controller there is no way to aim twin stick style--you have to cast while moving in the direction want to cast, which can be very challenging when positioning and dodging are critical for survival. The spells…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game had several significant pain points for me, and I didn't find anything to particularly make it stand out from other games of the same genre. - There are large sections of each map which have nothing in them, just passageways that are completely empty (apart from breakable objects which usually contain nothing but which you have to break anyway because they occasionally contain things that are very valuable). - There are pits which you can dash over, but if you dash just a very short…

positive · AI labelView post →i remember playing the demo for this game years ago. The demo consists of a museum-like level where you're shown the basics of the game, it was full of dialogues and lore. The level itself was nice as well. So when this game came out i was expecting something with a rich story, like most games have, and with thought out worlds and maps. The roguelike-randomly-generated levels aren't bad per se, but it gets old pretty fast, not to mention they don't really have a purpose, or make any sense. So…

There is something lovely about getting the right combos off after grinding and practicing the movement. The huge BUT in the room is the game is not well balanced. It can be beaten, and it will feel good to finally reach the end, but there will be a lot of moments where you just have to put up with some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. That said, I think it is worth a try if you ever catch the game for 10 bucks. There is a momentum this game captures…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This isn't a hack-and-slash hades-style game. It's methodical, slow, and you have to spend as much time avoiding falling into cliffs as you have avoiding enemies attacks. I would spend time learning enemy attack patterns but I have a job and this game is far too small content-wise, and the game design feels too low-effort for me to bother with it. Should have listened to the negative comments.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I might be part of the minority in that I hate this game as well. Been reading negative reviews and yeah the game feels awkward to Basic Attack and wait for the spells cooldowns to go all the way down before you go back in the offensive. Plus the dodge not having Invincibility frames feels very weird. I might go back into it in the future though.
