What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 194 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,258 of 1,560 positive).
Many players enjoy the Lovecraftian theme and dark rituals. [1][2][3] Some find the game similar to Anno or Frostpunk. [4][5][6] Several reviewers note bugs, UI issues, or balance problems. [7][8][9]

The expanse of the sea but the depth of a puddle. Tried to do too many things all of which feel half baked, is a shame cause some ideas are really interesting like the carving mechanic and the creature. Lots of bugs too, even in tutorial, too much jank like how it stays saying fields are not optimally placed for the farm even if you try a bunch of different combinations including surrounding the farm with fields …

TLDR: This game is almost great. However, it is held back by clunky, constant, and intrusive UI jank - which means that, for now at least, I can't give it a recommendation. If they fix problems 1-3 below, I'd happily switch this to an endorsement - it will never be what it could have been, but what it is can be good thematic fun. Let me tell you a story. I have a friend who likes to bake or cook for everyone - and …

All I really have to say about this game is that if you like colony sims, this could be a hit or miss, but if you like colony sims AND you really like the Lovecraftian mythos, you're probably gonna dig this.

This is a very good mythos / eldritch / Cthulhu game in its own right. It's a one of a kind. There are no other strategy games that I'm aware of that incorporate almost every aspect of Lovecraftian horror. I really, really wish that they would continue developing this game. It has strategic depth, so if you play it expecting all of the Lovecraftian horror to manifest immediately, you'll be disappointed. It takes …

I really enjoyed my time with Worshippers of Cthulhu and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys city builders, especially if you’ve played and liked games like Anno or Frostpunk. What I really liked: · It’s not as intense as some other city builders when it comes to micromanagement or tech trees, so it ended up being a more laid-back, fun experience for me. (For reference, I played the campaign on …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the idea of the theme, but the actual game is lackluster. The small bits of lovely lore of what's happening to your villagers is great, but mainly this game is about small scale management, and really simple RTS fights. Too slow, too predictable, the theme is horror but the gameplay is pure bureaucracy.

Even on low graphical presets and with consistent hardware, the game suffers from constant micro-stuttering. 2- Hand-holding to the extreme. The game uses a tutorial style reminiscent of mobile games—it’s eternal and treats the player like they’ve never seen a strategy game before. If I’m playing this genre, I clearly have some base level of knowledge; I don't need my hand held for every single action. It gives you practically no freedom, making the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chapter 3 is unreasonably hard. It wore away at my enjoyment of the game to the point I couldn't play it any more. I love the theme, the first two chapters are great, but chapter 3 has crushed my enjoyment. It's shown up all the flaws of the game by trying to be too clever. This game could have been a flawed gem, turns out it's a disappointing gem.

Lovecraftian games have been blowing up over the past few years. Dredge already has three DLCs, Darkest Dungeon did so well we got a sequel, and Still Wakes the Deep is sitting at almost 90% positive reviews on Steam. And the list keeps growing – smaller titles like Worshippers of Cthulhu and Do No Harm have also been getting plenty of love from…

Worshippers of Cthulhu is a uniquely Lovecraftian city-builder where you build and manage your own island of cultists. The narrative of Worshippers of Cthulhu draws heavily from the chilling cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft, the mastermind behind the infamous Lovecraft Mythos. At its core, the game revolves around building, managing, and nurturing your very own cult dedicated to the Great One, Dagon. As you recruit new…

I want to start by saying i have played a many city builders, age of wonders 4, the civ series, heroes of might and magic series The endless series, stellaris, ect. so i am no stranger to city builders. worshipers of Cath ulu is a city builder with an eldritch theme, the game has potential but falls massively short. let me explain. the first problem is the UI and general controls. whomever made this game has never played a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Starts out really good. City builder with over the top HP Lovecraft elements that are excellently made. Superb voice work with a lot of feel and will make you chuckle with joy. But a few hours in the economy collapses and you get stuck, even on easy. Should be more balanced. As is, not worth it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will not trash this game as other's have done. I will offer my review as I see the game. Some of the economy mechanics are repetitive and eventually should (IMHO) be automated or allowed to "set and forget". For example, the sacrifices etc. If I want to keep throwing people into the ocean, then allow me to do that on a regular basis. Overall, this feels like a rreskin of FrostPunk with the UI of Cthulhu.... Therefore, you may or may not appreciate the value for your money spent. Edit: I'm…

neutral · AI labelView post →TL;DR: Abusive relationship-you want to play with it, but it doesn't wanna play with you. I hope the developers, (and future players) see this review and take it as constructive feedback. Now, I'm not shy, I'll admit it loudly-though not proudly-that I play on a potato gaming laptop. It's not too terrible, I can manage games like WoW or BG3 with medium-high settings. The laptop screams, but that's what headphones are for. So running this game should be no issue graphic wise. This game has…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really REALLY wanted to like this but it is so slow and clunky. I pushed through the first level, but on getting to the second level and seeing my technology tree resets I just noped. It LOOKS like Anno but it's not. It emphasises individual houses/people (a house holds one person). You assign individual, named people to production buildings. You can only do that if they're the right level. You don't level people, you level houses, which levels the people. A big part of later levels is…

neutral · AI labelView post →Mitigated no. It has its good moments. The events are really nice, in the spirit of the rpg books back in the days. Then it become a micro-management game without the right options. Your cultist have specialties to better produce what they do best. However, you cannot move them on the island you would like. In fact you can. But it is boring. You ensure you have enough houses for everyone. So, you over build for a while. Then you create more houses on the island you want and then you make them…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool theme and design hidden behind terrible game mechanics. I just finished this game and I am so disappointed. I loved the theme and the idea of another survival city builder. I played Ixion, which is one of the best games in the genre IMO, and Frostpunk, so I had high hopes for this. However, it is an anticlimactic slog with terrible mechanics that make it unnecessarily tedious and cumbersome to play the game. Every level ends anticlimactically, and the final level is the most…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was expecting more from this, very shallow. Gets boring and repetitive fast.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I've never played Anno (haven't bought a Ubisoft game since Splinter Cell 1 or 2, back in 2004), but I have played a good amount of Paradox grand strategy, Tropico, Simcity etc. For me, this is a novel and fresh game. Some reviewers say it doesn't live up to Anno etc, I can't say much to that... other than Ubisoft sucks. What I can say is that the reviewers criticizing the lack of theme are wrong. I'm a big Lovecraft fan, and this game has a ton of theme, all throughout. Cool events, cool…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A slow burn Lovecraftian city builder that doesn't live up to expectation. Play as the head of the cult of Cthulhu, leading a sect of the cult that has washed up on the shore of an island after a shipwreck during a storm. Establish a small city, harvesting resources from around the island to build homes, industry, and the means to become self sufficient in terms of food. Your ultimate goal is awakening the slumbering elder god Cthulhu, performing rituals to extend his patience with the cult,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short response. I want to like this game, but 1) I cannot move people to the house I want them in without tedious island hopping 2) the navy sinks itself and gets more expensive every time you summon a new one. The game just keeps compounding little annoyances and takes itself too seriously. This makes it very difficult to enjoy, especially on the later levels.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not normal to have bugs in this game on low settings. Lag, stuttering, and I don't even have this problem on Chivalry 2 or Remnant 2. Optimize your game, damn it! It's really tedious for no reason! I'm disgusted with playing this, I'm going to go play Wasteland 3, an even more demanding game that runs perfectly, proving it's just a matter of optimization!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While not as expansive as say, Civilization games (I'm using the most known type here), I think this game has a lot to offer and I don't agree with a lot of the negative reviews here. No Lovecraftian theme? I'm sorry- are we playing the same game? I love that a lot of the base mechanics of the game are literally built around what happens to innocents/cultists in the mythos. You carve your followers with a ritual dagger to muck with their sanity and put them to work. You sacrifice willing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a fan of H. P. Lovecraft, I really wanted to like this game. Unfortunately, it's quite rough around the edges, unpolished, and with questionable design decisions. It also feels more like a mobile game than a proper PC Colony Sim.

neutral · AI labelView post →This game was a let down. By half-way through chapter two (out of 4) I was over this game and its insane amount of waiting around for resources to build up. The chapters are long, annoying and just drag on. Chapter 3 really decides to ramp up how annoying the game design by introduced bones and runes. It's just a city builder that isn't really well thought out (as a city builder) and with a mildly decent story (though unoriginal and with annoying characters)

neutral · AI labelView post →I think this game is pretty fun, and its something I've been looking to play for a little while now after playing Cult of the Lamb. It's a pretty standard run of the mill sort of city builder game but its about building up your cult instead of a city. I've just finished the first chapter and I have just a couple of comments about it. The first is that every now and then you'll need to make decisions for your cultists, however your decision doesn't really have any weight to it, you'll either…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Anno 1602 with no ground combat, and way more boring sea combat that had a chtulhu theme park skin draped over its half alive corpse. The game lacks both subtely and over the top stuff at the same time. It is slow, but not subtle, instead of being a secret cult, you run your own island that just advertises itself as doomsday cult located here. Ressources sometakes take minutes to get 1 of while you need 20 of them. And somehow, worst of all, they managed to have sea combat with lovecraftian…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not the greatest game ever made - but it's fun, and better than it has any right to be. "Lovecraft-ian city builder" isn't the most obvious mashup. But it totally works, and there's a surprising amount of depth to it. If you like the cthulhu mythos, and you have even a passing interest in city builders, give it a try. You'll get enough enjoyment out of one side or the other to justify the price. My only real complaint is that some of your followers' needs are a little out of step with the rest…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →repetitive and unimaginative. basic city builder balance this or bad thing happen fast with love craft makeup. not remotely interesting to be honest unless your obsessed with generic city builder economy balancers cos thats all it is.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having to give this a thumbs down because some of the design choices for city building are really questionable. The effigy sacrifice system turns Cthulhu from being an inscrutable Elder God into a micro-managing local council. I can understand using ritual points to unlock new buildings, but why does Cthulhu demand that I have earned enough Cthulhu Coin to build each item of municipal infrastructure on my island before he will allow me to manufacture robes?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's Anno-lite, and it's lite on everything, including Cthulhu himself. The game mechanics are very simple, combat is a boring chore. Lovecraftian story makes for a cool-looking backdrop but doesn't have any appreciable impact on game-play.

neutral · AI labelView post →Had this on my wishlist since the reveal at the 2024 Future Games Show. After two years I went for it and I'm sad to report that I'm getting burnt out on the exhaustive gameplay design during these missions. The intrigue really wears off as the chapters and objectives drag out as you're subject to timers on everything and repetitive gameplay. I've recently played a lot of other city builder games (Whiskerwood, Corsair Cove and Going Medieval to name a few) and out of those mentioned, this one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So... this is a game that I desperately wanted to like. I had extremely high hopes for it, honestly. But, the gameplay itself is just tedious. Many of the systems aren't entirely clear on what they want you to do, and the most unforgivable offense here is that somehow this game, even on low settings, managed to stutter constantly. The game has been out nearly a year, and it still plays really rough. Honestly, I just can't recommend it. 4/10

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games that i wish steam had a star rating system in stead of just good/bad. Its a decent game and ultimately im going to recommend it. That being said its short for story mode. 30 hours in and ive done it all and I really dragged it out way further than what i needed to. Id say i could have finished it in half that time. So if you pick it up, grab it on sale. Some of the cinematics are buggy and do not look good at all but it was worth the time spent on it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At the mission 1 it is interesting. At the mission 2 it becomes boring from time to time. At the mission 3 it is extremly boring. I have tried hard to finish it, yet after the 3rd had begun and an annoying fuel mechanics had appeared, after a few hours of trying to maintain crematoriums burning with bones, I told myself "Screw this, I dont want to spend even a few seconds in this game anymore". Sea monsters tend to die simply as times goes on, and you can have only a few of them in parallel,…
