What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 292 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (24,294 of 30,389 positive).
Players praise the game's vast, fully simulated sandbox that lets you go from a lone pilot to commanding fleets and building an empire. [1][2][3] Many note a steep learning curve and obtuse UI, but say tutorials help and the depth is rewarding. [4][5][6] Some reviewers complain about bugs, poor AI, and lack of endgame goals despite hundreds of hours played. [7][8][9]

I like this game. But it does not get my recommendation because, much like X3 before it, the game is not very approachable. I don't want my friends to buy it only to give up 10 minutes in, never to return. They did exactly that with X3:TC after my recommendation. Many things about this game are great, but you have to be willing wade through a bad user experience to get there. For a full review, read on. The Good or …

Never have I seen a game that does so many different things, and connects them together so well. When you start the game, it feels like playing the single player version of Elite Dangerous in the best sense possible. After about 20 hours, the game suddenly turns into Kenshi, setting up automated productions and building bases, After about 40 hours, the game suddenly turns into mount and blade, as you'll lead a fleet …

Your initial impression of the game might be that of a rather pretty space adventure. However at heart X4 is an incredibly complex and fully simulated first person empire building sandbox with an omnipotent RTS-like command interface in shape of the map UI. The X series tends to be described as an EVE Offline with a much faster progression. In this universe, the player can evolve from a penniless pilot of a fighter …

The negative reviews aren't wrong, I just happen to enjoy games that have vast scale and complexity, and I'm no stranger to UI that defies comprehension. You should still call out the problems and vent your frustrations of course. I've played StarQuest Online, Shores of Hazeron, and Star Citizen, so I'm well acquainted with games that aim high but at the cost of a casual streamlined experience. This game does have …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have about 800 hours in this game (I own two copies, Steam and GOG), so it must be good. However, the game has a memory leak, and has had one for years. A few hours of playing, and all of a sudden, it becomes a nightmare to save and exit the game. Until Egosoft fix this, a negative review will stand.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game could be the best space game ever made (BUT) right now, I’m done forcing myself to play it. X4 has some of the best-looking ships in any space game. The scale is incredible, the capital ships look amazing, and the combat can be genuinely awesome when everything finally comes together. The problem is that the game gives you all these beautiful ships, fleets, carriers, destroyers, and battleships… but almost no meaningful reason to actually use them. That is what kills the experience…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update, 13.06.2026 Before I continue, there is one thing to keep in mind while reading this review: X4 was released in 2018. It is now 2026. The game has been on the market for eight years. I decided to update my review because I have added another 400+ hours of gameplay since my original review. During that time I bought all DLCs except Timelines, because the reviews did not convince me, and the soundtrack DLCs. I played through Update 8.0 and also started a new game with Update 9.0.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Look. The game is incredible. Egosoft are vastly overly ambitious with the resources at hand to pull it off smoothly, however. Despite my playtime, I can't recommend this. Why? Save file corruption. I've done all the searching. Took action using all the tips reddit, steam, AI, you name it, have given me. Nothing - nothing has prevented me twice now, from losing multi hundred hour playthroughs in an instant. Some will not be bothered by this, the sandbox is what matters. And I wish I were like…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to repeat what many others have said about this game. The simulation is there, and the economy of all the sectors working together is impressive and all, but the game simply does not give you a reason to keep going after you've achieve your initial financial freedom. There is a lack of any kind of end-game goal. The game has storylines, but these generally only serve to introduce, as well as occasionally gate-keep, new gameplay mechanics. At the very least I would love some kind of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love space sims, but this is by far the most unapproachable in existence. I feel as if the franchise has a loyal playerbase that is used to how it works and the devs probably don't get as much feedback from newer players, but I've tried twice to get into X4 because I like the concept but it's so difficult to navigate the game that I always end up giving up pretty quickly. I did do the basic tutorials, I did the intermediate ones as needed, but I simply cannot navigate the incredibly obtuse UI…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has enormous potential, but is badly held back by enemy/player fleet AI and other underlying systems. I really want to love this game, and feel strange leaving a negative review after so much time played, but hopefully it saves others a similar realization after already getting invested. The cracks first started to show when I began to command a fleet rather than playing as a single ship. Want to issue a command to your squad of interceptors to prevent them from chasing an enemy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After several hours of trying to enjoy X4, I've come to one conclusion: this isn't a space game, it's an unpaid internship in middle management. The flight model is excellent. Travel Mode is brilliant. The universe is beautiful. Then the game opens another menu. And another. And another. Need to complete a simple mission? Better understand five different inventory systems, two kinds of cargo, personal inventory versus ship inventory, station traders versus trade wares, and a user interface…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: The best single-player MMO you can play. Also the game that will make you ask "who designed this?" at least once per session. If you can accept its flaws, there is nothing quite like it. I have 900h (more actually) and I still can't decide if I love this game or hate it. Usually both. + Nice free updates, like seriously every version really brings something that makes me reinstall and start new game. + Interesting rebalance + Finally destroyers know how to shoot forward with their main…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried starting this game half a dozen times. I really, REALLY want to like it, but every time I start it I spend hours trying to figure out what to do next and how to do it. The tutorials are great, but they're not connected to the game play. They're just separate chapters in a huge instruction manual. I need some tutorial missions where they walk me through every step so I can connect it all. I'm sure this is a great game, but just wanted to warn folks that it's not a game you can just…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's no game that can scratch the itch of a space sandbox the way X4 does. Despite all the combat jank and having to fight against the terrible UI to get things done, I can't stop myself from loving and recommanding this game. I'll start with the main positive : the scope of the game is incredible. The fully simulated wares/resources economy and logistics is the backbone of the whole sandbox, and will give you the opportunity to rise as a trader, a miner and/or a fighter. The usual flow of…

I find myself talking about it a lot to my friends, but at the end of the day I don’t recommend it to them, and as such it’s only fair that I leave this a “Do NOT Recommend” review. But hopefully I can shed light on what this game does right and what it does wrong. The Good: - This is the best sandbox I’ve ever played. Factions will actually grow and conquer, and will grow and conquer faster with your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, X4 recently did an update for cloud saves, which undid 2 years of progress for me... It's made me introspective, and I realize I'm in the unenviable position of having to earn that all back or give up. I give up. And not just because I have to do the Timelines DLC all over again. I have always said that Egosoft is a company of incredibly talented programmers who have never made a game before. These guys can make a interesting mechanic or cool-looking model, but they seem allergic to…

Got such fun memories and mems out of it. It was overwhelming at the beginning, but when i got better ship than the starter one.... dayum. The Universe is your oyster. This game is a mix of Mass Effect + Total War and a lot of other games in that mix. I can't thank Egosoft enough so i just bought all of their DLCs which i recommend too, since it's worth…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Complexity is fine. Poor communication is not. A game with this many interconnected systems needs clear tutorials, sensible early-game objectives, and a smoother introduction to its core mechanics. It honestly feels like the developers have not sat down recently and replayed the tutorial or the opening hours from the perspective of a completely new player. Long-time players may already understand the game well enough to work around these issues, but new players are expected to learn through…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thanks to this wonderful game and the developers for curing me of my gaming apathy. I can play games again, instead of just staring at the monitor <3 Dreaming of virtual freedom, having received it, I didn’t know what to do with it Space sim where you start with a tiny ship, big dreams, and absolutely no idea what do you need to do? and why your autopilot just tried to kill you xD You’ll spend first few hours to study the interface and another few hours managing space spreadsheets, and the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disclaimer: I have spent more than twenty years in the X universe. I have played these games for thousands of hours, I am still playing them, and I will keep playing. So, I love this series. But I have never truly enjoyed its endgame. Not once. For me, the late game has always been the point where the universe stops feeling alive and starts feeling like a very large spreadsheet with spaceships. You have money, stations, fleets, production chains, more money, even larger fleets, and eventually…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did you enjoy Star Citizen? Stellaris? Hearts of iron? or any strategy games with a vertical learning curve? This game is literally everything i ever wanted and i was scared for years of spending time getting into it. It's much simpler than what i expected, just do the basic tutorials (30 min) and the map one, thats IT. or you can press H whenever and do the tutorial for whatever you're curious about mid game, and drop straight back into the game when you complete it. Just play the damn game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best space sandbox game. Don’t pay attention to reviews from people who’ve played less than 5 hours. The game is indeed challenging at first and it won’t guide you with a hand (though it sometimes tries and even succeeds at times). The game’s true charm unfolds gradually - it’s a true sandbox where you choose your own activities and ultimate goals. If you want, follow the faction storylines; if you want - play as a tycoon building massive complexes and setting up supply chains. If you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Anyway, X4: Foundations is almost unquestionably the best single-player space game out there right now, worth all of its frustrations (of which there are very many) and its near-vertical learning curve.
positive · AI labelView post →If you read the recent reviews and are turned away because the game seems hard to get into or understand for a new player, please. PLEASE, play the tutorial missions almost nobody has. There is an acheivement for doing so only 3.2% of players have. Yes, this game is daunting without doing those. I was in the exact same boat as the negitive reviews. If you dont want to take the time to learn the game thats fine, but please dont trash on it. it is a USER error when the game provides every tool…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first it seemed like a really cool idea with a lot of depth and grand strategy. Which it does have to a certain extent but the unbearable clunky nature of every aspect of them game has put me off. Trading, combat, station construction, fleet management and even just clicking around the menus is chore. I've tried everything to get into this game from YouTube to forums to mods, nothing has worked to bring me into the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has been patched to death. every major update introduces new incomplete "features", and for every bug fixed, 3 more annoying ones are introduced. played this game since release, it got better until Split Vendetta released, every update after was one step forwards, 3 steps back. newest "mini"-DLCs are all just very minor content additions, selling overpowered ships to the player. excuse given just being "you are funding future updates with it". and don't bother trying the discord for help…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X4 is the only "space game" i have found that offers so complete freedom to do what you want, when you want to. You can go at your own pace and learn how the game works, and your original objectives are still there waiting for you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Two words about the review. Recently, I wrote my first review and the amount of likes and rewards I received within a day was so inspiring that I wanted to keep writing and writing until this flow runs dry. My first review was negative, although in the first place, I wanted to support games I love. So I decided to dedicate my second review to my favorite game, and the difficulty lies in the fact that I love this game very much. But I wanted to give you something more than just enthusiasm. So in…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This is one of the best games in my library. For any fan of grand simulation sandbox games should be a must. Only here one can play and participate in the world on so many scales, v9.0 is the best state of the game ever and the best time to start.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →reading some of the reviews makes me question the mental faculties of people leaving negative reviews. if you put effort into learning the game, and PAY ATTENTION to the tutorials, it's not that bad. i went slow when i did them because all of the reviews prior mentioned that it's a confusing game. like, i took breaks and even applied a few study techniques. yeah it can be obtuse at times but once you get the hang of it, it's truly a rewarding experience. i feel for the devs reading these…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wish there was a 'maybe' button instead of just yes or no. If you WANT Factorio in space, get this game. If you do NOT want Factorio in space, stay away. X4: Foundations is a very interesting piece of software. Hesitant to call it a pure video game, it is more of a digital diorama that the player interacts with. There are no real voice actors (it’s all AI) and no real story behind anything you do in the game. It reminds me more of a battle simulator game that has an economy in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you like space sims? Do you like management sims? Do you hate yourself and want to be punished for expecting basic mechanics to be easy to understand and used without having to google something ever 10 seconds. Do you want the first mission the game gives you to require you to look up every step online because there is no way to figure it out in game. Then this is for you. All jokes aside. The game is fun but I feel like I have to fight the game to get that fun out, so just know that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried. For 7 hours I've tried but this game is absolutely terrible for new players. Elite dangerous has a learning curve, sure, but this game is on another level. The interface is near impossible, even simple things like selling ship components or items...even trade requires navigating this games terrible UI for ten minutes. I don't want the game to hold my hand but come on this is abysmal.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bad: be aware the new player experience is absolutely terrible. There are some tutorials on how to do things, but not what to do or why things are done, or how things like the economy work. I'm 16 hours into the game as of the review and I feel like I just kind of barely have my bearings now. You definitely need some time investment in the game. The game would benefit immensely from a narrative tutorial. Good: The space combat feels fairly good from small fighter combat way up to huge…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tofu in space tldr: The game is as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle. The combat is mediocre. The economic gameplay is terrible. The story and atmosphere of the game world are rock bottom. The developers manage to make the game only worse as it develops. A game about space flight doesn't have any proper... space flight - because the developers, in their genius, decided to remove collision from the game. So now you don't have spaceships in space, you have tofu in space. Combat: The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As many other reviewers have previously stated, the UI is dense and confusing initially--we're talking approximately 50 to 100 hours before your mind wraps around it and the dawn of UI awareness begins to pierce the overbearing veil of inexperience. If you overly dedicate yourself to learning the UI and how it properly functions you could reach it sooner, and there's no game without learning it. Sure, you can jump in and fly around, after the minor, and confusing, ordeal of mapping your keys.…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is one of my all time favorite games. I purchased the game around the release of Cradle of Humanity and version 4.0. If your considering picking this up, I do recommend at least getting the base game. The DLCs are a lot of fun and I own all of them, but not needed when first learning the game. X4 a universe simulator sandbox where you are free to make your own decisions. Want to fly around and engage is space combat? X4 is for you. Want to build up a mining and trade empire and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I picked this one up during the 90% off winter sale, and oh boy, this may be the best bang for my buck I've ever gotten in a videogame. The interface is clunky, tutorials are not the best, meaning you kind of are forced to go to YouTube to properly understand the game's mechanics. And yet, this is still the best space game I've ever played. The depths at which the simulation goes is absolutely insane. There are no tricks, every ship, every station, they're constantly being individually…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I had read the reviews. This game is not “deep”. It is not “complex”. It is hostile, obscure, and astonishingly disrespectful of the player’s time. Of the six hours I spent 'playing' this game, half of that was Googling, Youtubing and ChatGPTing how to progress in it. Six hours in, I did not feel challenged. I felt punished. Hard to Approach / Actively Anti-User The user interface is a masterclass in how not to design a game. Menus are bloated, inconsistent, and seemingly…

Don't buy it unless you're interested in losing interest in a lot of stuff you used to enjoy. Oh and make sure to get VRO and Reemergence mods, you can thank me later.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →holy cow I shoud just refund my 400 bucks in star citizen and give it to this guy. i'll be getting all the dlc and stuff. this game is so expansive. everything that anyone could ever want in a space game. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is probably my favourite game of all time. Building an empire, managing stations, eradicating the xenon, or just sitting back and just looking at my fleets. This game is so cool and no other game scratches that itch today. If things get stale, try a mod, there's a bunch out there and many are of excellent quality. X4 is not perfect, the ai can be frustrating sometimes, it can be hard to master, but when this game clicks, man is it good. With steady support from Egosoft, and regular…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's probably the least approachable game for new players I've ever played. It has the potential to be something I'd like but it takes a lot of patience. Even trying to figure out the some of the most basic mechanics, despite doing the tutorials, and doing the recommended starting scenario for new players, takes a lot of research. The developers call this "exploration" and not "holding your hand". I call it aggravation! I've probably spent more time googling and watching youtube videos on how…

After spending a couple of thousand hours in this game both on GOG and on Steam I can easily say that this is truly the best sandbox space game out there. It's one of a kind and there is nothing like it out there. It's a "Kenshi in Space", a "Mount & Blade in Space" or a "FPS Stellaris". And with total conversion mods like "X4 Star Wars Interworlds/SWI 0.91" (the best Star Wars mod for any game, ever)…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you can commit to learning the UI it is such a gooooood game. This scratches the itch of space sim, RTS and Tycoon all in 1. Freaking love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This recommendation comes with heavy caveats. The game's fun, but it starts to break down around mid-to-late-game due to AI issues that have been in the game for years. A couple of YouTubers claimed that the 9.0 update made improvements to the AI. I've seen no evidence of this. Your NPC-controlled ships will still die in stupid ways. Your traders will still "flee" from pirates by dropping out of travel mode and going off in a random direction (imagine a mugger calls out to you while you're…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has huge potential, but the UI feels like it was made by software engineers, rather than game developers. Trying to build a station, let alone find a builder for it, is just terribly designed. I'm trying to play a game, and I get the piece by piece realism of it, but actually doing it... why make it so complicated? Context overload, hidden info, zero feedback when something goes wrong. It's just a huge learning curve where it doesn't need to be, and I don't appreciate that. Stop trying…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't really get the appeal until about 50 hours in. At that point it clicked.... this game is more than just you. It's about creating an empire. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have waited a long time to write a review for this game, and it has had its ups and downs, but I always come back to it. Egosoft does a great job of adding new content to the game over time to continuously improve its core mechanics. I highly recommend this game for any one who wants a vast space game that does either dogfighting, fleet tactics, conquering systems, or trading/commerce (or most of the time all of them combined). Its modding community is awesome also, and has one of the best…
