Do I like this game? YES. Are the controls janky as can be? YES. Does this feel like an assassins creed game where you just swap out the animus for magic? YEAH BUDDY. Do I care? NOPE. I like the story a lot it's got me hooked and I want to know how it all ends. The settings are all good (from what you can see of some of them). I think this needs a lot of polish and for some stuff to be more streamline, but it's got …

Edit: I was unaware when crafting this review that the game was made with some AI assets via concept art. Until the dev team makes a bold stance of what is going to be AI-Driven in the final product, please be wary. The team has stated that they won't be "using AI anymore" but it is still worth noting. This review however is based on my experience prior to this knowledge ---- --- People are giving 1666: Amsterdam a …

EDIT: The studio is now claiming that they will remove all AI from the game, but in my opinion the damage is already done and I can't even trust that their writing doesn't come from an AI instead of a real human. I do not believe their lies, especially when the game director doubled down and said that he doesn't regret using AI, he only regrets getting caught. I wanted so badly to love this game. I have had it on my wishlist since I first heard about it and have been waiting for it to release. At this point in time, I can't recommend it. 50% of the 252 Steam reviewers we collected recommend 1666: Amsterdam. The complaint that keeps coming up: use of generative AI assets. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

The announcement of 1666: Amsterdam attracted attention due to Patrice Désilets' return to the intellectual property after more than a decade. Game Rant noted similarities between the game's supernatural premise and Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed: Codename Hexe. The Prologue demo received mixed reactions. Polygon praised its eerie atmosphere and opening sequence but criticized its writing, dialogue, pacing and limited gameplay. Following the demo's release, players discovered AI-generated placeholder assets, prompting Panache Digital Games to apologize and announce plans to replace them with human-made assets. Pre-release impressions expressed concerns about the game's technical state.…

Every choice, every breath, has led me to this moment...as the moon bears witness, my time has come! The aura. The witches. The cats!! The intro theatrics to this game had me completely hooked. This isn't a negative review where I am 100% saying to not buy this product. It's more of a "not now and give it more time to cook" recommendation. The story and premise have my interest but that is not where the problem lies. This game suffers from a couple things. I won't get into the AI stuff, you…

Horrible. Don't get me wrong - the idea is great. But releasing a game in this state? Nope, that was a terrible decision. It feels like it should have been in development until at least Q3 2027. Maybe even 2028. This isn't early access, it's a pre-alpha release. You get stuck in textures, and so many things bug out that you constantly have to restart the game. Even the DualSense mapping is broken. The button displayed on the UI icon does absolutely nothing, while the actual function is bound…

This game feels like it was assembled by an AI that was told to “make a video game” and then nobody bothered to check the result. The design is painfully generic, the mechanics feel half-baked, and almost every aspect screams minimum effort. There’s a distinct lack of polish, personality, and most importantly actual human judgment. If AI was used in its creation, it certainly wasn’t used as a tool to enhance the experience; it feels like it was used as a substitute for having good ideas in the…

And I don't know if that is a me problem or if others are having the same issue. It just feels bland and not fun at all. 1666: Amsterdam; Great Concept, Half-Baked Execution I really wanted to like this game. Honestly, I already did. I played the demo quite a bit before purchasing the full game because I genuinely enjoyed it. The concept, storyline, setting, and overall vibe completely sold me. The demo was definitely clunky, and I noticed things like the weird movement when walking in tandem with another character, but I was willing to overlook those problems because it was a free demo. The aesthetics and visual direction for the game are great. The fundamentals of the magic here are interesting to me, and I adore witchcraft themes. With that said, the story felt like a jumbled mess. Not a first for me, and generally that's totally fine. What I'm more bothered by, though, is the developers and their hypocrisy when it comes to their use of Generative AI and their refusal to acknowledge this.

Got nothing good to say about the game as of now. Combat is awful, performance isn't stable and the animations and player models look like potatoes. I feel like the subtitles are done by AI because in the first hour of the game there are already weird things about the subtitles like using the wrong words that have been said or just the way things are said in general. voice actors may also be AI or underpaid workers who were FORCED to do the voices. Personally i don't have an issue with AI being used per say, i care about the end result, and this, so far, not good. It is early access, so maybe keep it in the wishlist, but don't buy it just yet. I’m rooting for this game. Google “Ubisoft tried to kill 1666.” If you’re into boss fights, the little guy took on the big guy for rights to this game, and he won. So the conspiracy theorist in me can’t help but wonder if, behind the scenes, Ubi has helped to fan the flames of what has seemed to be—ironically—a witch hunt against 1666. But I digress. I buy A LOT of EA games with the intention of checking them out for some first impressions, and then setting them aside to cook, with the…

The acting is okay, not the best I’ve ever seen, but certainly good enough for the level the game is aiming for. I do have a few observations that I think could take the experience from great to outstanding. I gave this game way more time than it deserved. For an Early Access game, it plays more like a preAlpha than anything. The story and combat was what intrigued me the most. It was such a let down with how mindless the combat was. Mashing one button, left click and occasionally hitting spacebar to dodge. The camera was so disorienting during this and had a hard time keeping up with the character movement. Character faces lacking detail, movement feels janky for both Noa and when you're playing…

Personal Rating: Slightly Positive (65%) I sort of can and cannot defend this game it's current state. So, the story is interesting, for sure something into it, and I'm glad that I got more of the Witch gameplay that I wanted from the demo. The gameplay is pretty good and feels great, even given by my hardware limitations at the moment, which gets me into the biggest negative out there. The graphics: Even tho the game looks awesome even in Low Detail, it's horribly optimised to the point of…

Another piece of evidence as to why "early access" shouldn't exist. This game isn't done. The pedestrian AI is ridiculously stupid, and you don't bump into anyone on the street - you phase through them in a way that makes the world feel fake and empty. People don't see you whooshing along, glowing red and hovering above the water - not ten feet away. The writing is mid, and the dialogue suffers from the classic disease of "everyone recorded their vocals alone". There's potential here, but…

I don't review games EVER, I felt compelled to review this game because it's a game I've been excited for since I heard about it in passing. I knew next to nothing about it nor the history of it outside of the fact that it was witches and I'm ALLLLLL over that. I also don't play solo games so I was really stepping out of my comfort zone for this one. firstly, I was surprised by the price point, as I loaded in the game was BEAUTIFUL. the characters did have some fuzziness to them quality wise,…

I was actually excited for that 1666 witch game. I'm sad the dev is so for using AI. "Oh it won't be in the final game" like it matters. Using it is using it no matter what stage you're at.

very cool concept, but as of now it's meh. I like the protagonist Noa, but cannot say the same for other characters. To address the AI thing, since the demo I've noticed the paintings (which were AI regenerated to make the portraits scream) are not there anymore. Buy the game if you want to support Panache with your money. That's all I can say

Been waiting for this game to come out, concept is really cool playing as a cat and witch is a really fun idea. I liked the design of the characters and the world. Only managed to play just over 2 hours as there is a lot of bugs and it's hard to move past levels. Having to cast spells and have the little cut scene every time is very tiresome. The combat is really boring and repetitive. I love story games, but this story even at just the start seems to be all over the place, feels like something…

I was hyped for this game as soon as it was announced. The demo was fantastic and felt really promising, but the full game fell completely flat after about an hour. I was expecting a narrative driven experience. The combat mechanics are introduced immediately and feel terrible to play, I had to turn on the camera settings in order to focus on the correct enemies. The mechanics didn't work, sometimes I died by a key not registering, this make any fight I went into frustrating and I tried to…

A heads-up that the studio behind Amsterdam 1666 is on the mega-popular 'We're sorry you noticed genAI assets in our game that were placeholders we forgot to take out' carousel. So there's a game I was going to play and will now not.

2/2 Hieronymus Janssens' people play a lively game of Main Chaude (hot hand!) in a palace created in 1666 by Wilhelm Schubert van Ehrenberg.

Not worth it, its bland and a very buggy mess. They should've continued developing before releasing early access.
