What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 178 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,669 of 1,764 positive).
Players praise the game's clever, interconnected puzzles and gentle humor. [1][2][3] Many find it relaxing and charming, with a simple mechanic that evolves creatively. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the lack of variety and slow progression as drawbacks. [7][8]

The game is too relaxing. While the puzzles are relatively interesting in themselves, they have very little variety for the most part. The different areas of the game don't seem to introduce new mechanics or ways of interacting with the core tree pushing gameplay in a novel way. As a result you end up just sort of mindlessly solving a constant stream of puzzles without a real sense of progression. I'm assuming that …

The concept of a puzzle game being 'relaxing' (without being downright easy) seemed like a contradiction to me, but I get it with this title. In most puzzle games, you chug along solving puzzles, eventually hitting a wall when you get stuck on some puzzle that needs to be completed to progress. Then, you choose between either i) bashing your head against the wall until you finally solve it, ii) looking up the …

There's a decent chance this is the best sokoban game ever made. It's beautiful, deviously simple, and outstandingly clever. There are so many "first moments" in this game where you learn a new mechanic that literally opens up the world, which by the way is gigantic. This is a massive game! And it almost could be considered an open world puzzle game?? I have been loving this experience, it's so calming and …

Players who liked A Monster's Expedition talk about clever and evolving puzzle mechanics; those who didn't talk about lack of puzzle variety and progression. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
A Monster's Expedition received "universal acclaim" on Nintendo Switch, according to review aggregation website Metacritic. 100% of critics recommended the game according to OpenCritic. Reviewers complimented the puzzle design. Push Square's Stephen Tailby called them simple and elegant. Joel Dewitte of Nintendo World Report described the puzzles as "airtight", and enjoyed that the small puzzles led to many small victories for the players. The undo and reset buttons were specifically highlighted by Chris Tapsell of Eurogamer as removing pressure from the puzzle-solving process and freeing the player to experiment. Writing for Vandal, Manu Delgado criticized the limited solutions to puzzles…

positive · AI labelView post →I was initially drawn to A Monster's Expedition for its charming art style and theme—I particularly liked the idea of roaming around an archipelago while solving small puzzles and being able to simply drop a tough area and explore somewhere else when I grew tired of my current path. The addition of playing from the perspective of an adventure-seeking monster and learning about the history of humans via bizarre interpretations of the historical remnants of their society lends the game a unique…

Or reviewed it. Which I feel bad about, because it's so good. This is one of my favorite developers/publishers, I've completed everything they've put out. In a weird way, I'm kinda glad I didn't finish it, as this is one of my favorite puzzle games, and I typically don't revisit games. Everything about it is so perfect. The music, the sound…

positive · AI labelView post →Thoughtful depth over abundant width. Many struggle to explore concepts thoroughly when developing game ideas. A Monster’s Expedition is a brilliant example of why the former is superior. By concentrating on elevating sokoban elements without deviation, simple log pushing turns into meaningfully complex interactions rather than half-baked implementations. This is less knowledge-based, “metroidbrania” progression, and more about solving puzzles with advanced mechanics. Experimentation is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's extremely "fine". Which isn't enough to get a thumbs up from me. IMPRESS ME, GAME. This was touted to me as a Metroidbrainia, and so far I've seen none of that. I have no enthusiasm to continue pushing some logs around. Perhaps I've made a fatal mistake and in 3 islands time the game will open up with a variety of new log pushing techniques, but so far all I've seen is 2 hours / 100 islands worth of sokoban log pushing and the game looks like it's going to be hours more of that. Meh.…

positive · AI labelView post →A Monster’s Expedition nails its mechanics by turning environmental logic and spatial navigation into pure gameplay joy. What looks at first like a simple “push‑blocks‑to‑solve” game quickly reveals itself as a clever system of rules and consequences that feels deeply satisfying to master. The core mechanical loop is beautifully simple: push trees to create paths and bridges across grid‑like puzzle islands. Pushing isn’t just moving objects — it’s about understanding the spatial system: how…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really exceptional puzzle game. For the main story (and the museum-exploring portion of post-game) it's almost like a lighter Stephen's Sausage Roll - a fairly straightforwards at first set of block-pushing mechanics that evolve creatively over the course of the game, adding new mechanics not by adding previously unseen objects but instead having the existing objects and mechanics interacting in increasingly complex ways, and that impressively keep you surprised with new interactions all the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is Sokoban. An extremely good one mechanics-wise, but it made me realise I hate Sokoban, and why. Let's start with the good bit: the puzzle elements. Both of them. This is truly a Sokoban game as all we get is to move within a grid, which has only floor, water and wall tiles (and tree stumps, which can count as both a tile type and a puzzle element). All we get except that are 1-tile and 2-tile long logs, which are our pushable boxes, but the fact the short log can switch between two…

Initially, much is achievable, but once you have uncovered almost the entire map, it becomes tricky, because then you even have to think across biomes.

positive · AI labelView post →Good puzzle game that thrives on making the most out of a very simple mechanic, which is the way of the greats. I did have some issues with it: 1) The most straightforward fixable one - map should be something that can be brought up any time. It's a pain to navigate later in the game when solving harder puzzles or finding how to get to unexplored areas. 2) Speaking of unexplored areas - the idea of many of them being a puzzle in an of itself to access is fine, but with how often that is the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Monster's Expedition excellent puzzle game with a relaxing atmosphere, it has so many cute little details, the way it introduced new interactions between elements was always unexpected and very fun, it was an absolute delight to play from start to finish. i nearly cried at the end
positive · AI labelView post →Monster pushes tree. Tree falls over. Simple enough. One of the most engaging puzzle games I've played and yet so simply presented as nothing more than a pastoral diversion: visit the islands, and see the exhibits. In doing so, you'll find yourself truly exercising your spatial reasoning, some solutions requiring a circuitous re-routing and others a re-examining of its most basic concept: monster pushes tree, tree falls over. If you enjoyed Stephen's Sausage Roll, getting this is a no-brainer.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →LOGical puzzle with no anaLOG Monster's expedition is my new favorite sokoban game. Previously that title was held by Stephen's Sausage Roll, but it gets beaten in almost every aspect. They are somewhat similar so I can't help but compare the two: Expedition has better learning curve, starting from too easy and ending in very difficult. There is often something to do or discover even if you get stuck in one area of the map. And the areas don't feel like prerequisites to each other as they…

neutral · AI labelView post →游戏是好玩的,但我非常怀疑作者的艺术素养:难道你们觉得通关以后整个世界都是光秃秃的木桩很好看吗 The game is fun, but I seriously question the developer's artistic taste: do you really think a world full of bare wooden stumps after clearing it looks good?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Truly an amazing puzzle game, the ingenuity and added complexity to the game makes each puzzle feel like a totally unique challenge. The extra added snowman puzzles make this game have as much worthwhile difficulty as you want.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do not often write reviews, but I feel this deserves it. After playing a bunch of puzzlers, I was concerned about the comments here that mention a vast, repetitive world. YOU COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG. The world is not vast, it is MASSIVE. After visiting several hundred islands, the game still keeps throwing new, creative ways at me to combine two types of logs and two pieces of rock. And I still have no clue if I am getting even close to the end. All the time, solving the puzzles felt both…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exactly what I like in a Sokoban puzzle game, which are not usually my kind of puzzle. A Monster's Expedition has a very slim selection of puzzle elements and is able to cleverly use space and wordless tutorials to squeeze the absolute most they can out of it. There's literally hundreds of bite-sized puzzles, and yet the game continued to surprise me throughout. The game is simple, easy to understand, and even easier to experiment with. neutral · AI labelView post →It is my top 3 favourite puzzle game. This game is similar to "5 step steve" and "n step steve" (my favourite game that is also for free), where at the beggining of the game you meet all of the objects that you will interact with, and during the game you LEARN how you can interact with them. It is not like "Baba is you" (I love this game also) where there are new words so you have to adapt. Moreover it is not like many Sokoban-like games where you have to solve something by brute-force and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first, the game seems very fun but it doesn't take long to become repetitive and confusing. You end up running around islands back and forth trying to figure out if you missed the solution to reach the island or if it was intended for you not to reach it. The game is not great at explaining mechanics or guiding you if you are lost. I really wanted to like it but its just not worth. There are much better puzzle games out there.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super cozy and relaxing. This was my first time experiencing Sokoban puzzles, so I found this game to be quite difficult at times, especially when there's bonus game logic involved, like rolling logs over other logs. I recommend checking out the user-made guides on Steam when you get stuck and can't solve a puzzle. Many, if not most, of the guides were created before recent updates, so you might have to spend some time solving things yourself or searching harder for answers. While this game is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super relaxing, but gets fairly repetitive. Though there are some small variations to the main puzzle mechanic, it doesn't seem to try to take the idea too far and doesn't offer a visible sense of mechanical progression. Still, it's the perfect game to play for half an hour in between other tasks just to unwind after a long day.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a challenging puzzle game with a lot to chew on for your money, and because it's simple, it's never that frustrating. I say it is simple, but it is impressive how little the possible moves are in a given level on paper. yet somehow the solutions elude you. Finding the solution, particularly for the harder puzzles, was satisfying and I can appreciate how clever they were. And that title card drop. The game tricking you into drifting away in a raft is a great hook. I feel there is so much…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An example of one of the best kinds of puzzle games: just a handful of simple mechanics, but with so, so many more interactions and implications than you would ever expect. The amount of mileage this game gets out of rolling and flipping logs is astounding. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Monster's Expedition starts out beautiful and fun. It looks gorgeous and passing the first few islands is satisfying as you journey through the quirky world, enjoying the peaceful music and rustling waves. Unfortunately, affter a few hours the ever sprawling world is more of the same and I find myself bored with no real draw to continue. I think you really need to find this on sale to get close to 'worth it'.

neutral · AI labelView post →I didn't find the ideas that the game contains interesting. There aren’t many of them, yet they’re stretched over several hours, making the game feel very repetitive. It feels like I'm doing mostly the same thing over and over, just with some variations and new affordances slowly being introduced throughout the game. The game is way too long for what it is. While solving puzzles, I spent the vast majority of the time trying random things and pruning the state tree of the puzzle, which is bad.…

I really like the other games, and this one also has a well designed puzzle system, but where the other 2 games are short and sweet, "A Monster's Expedition" is a sprawling world that feels spread too thin. Like "The Witness", each section of 6-10 puzzles in "A Monster's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Womderful game if you like sokoban style block pushing puzzles. The atmosphere is super peaceful and contemplative and makes it very easy to lose yourself for hours in the various puzzles available. The archipelago aesthetic is very well done and the ways the various island puzzles can interact is super well done. The newish hint system is a godsend too, once you beat the game and get all the obvious islands its great for helping you figure out where to go to discover hidden secret puzzles.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a frightning game, you finish a puzzle and you are already in front of another puzzle so you say to yourself:"I'll just do that one too" and you find yourself doing that over and over again because it's so seamless. It's a really wonderful game that just makes you want to keep going, and that's what you should do. Don't stop yourself at one point too long, the game has hidden depth and it will show you it's secrets with time so just keep moving as long as you see a way forward
