I fully understand the game by nature isn't that long and that's okay... but my god i hate tower defense... they butchered an otherwise nostalgia heavy game. seems all we can expect from square-enix these days

Actraiser Renaissance is a modern reimagining of a cult classic that dares to preserve one of the most unusual genre hybrids in gaming while significantly expanding its scope. It blends side-scrolling action with god-simulation city management in a way that still feels distinctive decades after the original’s debut. I loved this game when I was younger, must have beaten it a few times. This version looks beautiful in comparison. It is updated for today while keeping the classic look to everything. The one gripe I have is the tower defense modes. I am not a huge fan of tower defense games, and more than half this game has become a tower defense game. Every map has you going through about 5 tower defense battles and they can get …

Bear in mind that I'm writing this as someone who played the original game on the SNES, and played through it (and LOVED it) multiple times. PROS The same base game is there, it's cool that you can switch between the original soundtrack and an orchestrated one. The magic system is revamped. In the original, you could only use a spell so many times, and once you were out, you were out for the rest of the level. In this game, you have a standard MP meter, so it can refill and you can keep using…

It's a shame that the developers felt the need to make changes to the original game. It would have been the perfect remake if they had just kept to the original formula.

This game lacks most of the charm of the original. There is a heavy focus on "heroes" now. It felt a lot less like a god tending your people and more a third party spectating JRPG heroes while your angel sasses everyone. You are absolutely just watching the story of the boring heroes you have recruited. You no longer naturally recover magic power on the map, so most of the game I spent just flying around waiting for magic recharge items to spawn. The game introduces tower defense…

I played the original ActRaiser in my youth several times on the SNES. I was excited when I first heard about this game but delayed buying it after seeing many concerning reviews that were mixed to negative. I recently got it on sale to finally try and here are my thoughts. The Good: The initial combat felt nice with more of a combat update than just the good ol' hack and slash. This included a dodge that slides you backwards out of harms way. The art of the enemies and background looked…

The updated visual aesthetic, while a good graphical update from the original, took a bit to get used to. Going from beautiful pixel graphics to anime was a bit jarring at first, and I was a bit disappointed it bears striking similarities to multiple remakes of other games. That sort of pop-up storybook style is very nice to look at, but I prefer a style that sticks out and is unique. This one kind of blends in with the rest. I'd say the orchestral remakes of the soundtrack rival the SNES…

Let’s remake Actraiser but pad it out to make it boring Overview Actraiser Renaissance is a remake of a SNES game ActRaiser and while it looks and sounds pretty it somehow makes the game worse than the original. While I have not played the original, just from basic research I can see that everything I hated about the game could be attributed as something the remake tacked on. Yet there were parts I liked. And all of those could be attributed to the original game concept. There is something…

Disclaimer: I played the game offline on my Steam Deck, so even though I logged about 16 hours in order to finish it, including the new extra stage at the end, it says I played it for just a few hours. Well, this one was a shot of nostalgia. I remember loving the original Act Raiser for the SNES and its mix of 2D side-scroller hack & slash and "Populous"-lite city building. I also found the story about playing as a sword-wielding god and his angelic attendant in a fantasy medieval world…

I enjoyed this remake a lot. I played the original waaaaaaay back around my preteens in the early 2000's or so. I loved the game at the time, and am happy to say that I actually ended up liking the remake more. This isn't a difficult game. It's pretty easy overall, I never got a game over on normal mode and never even lost more than one life per stage, which was rare enough on it's own. Enemy's are pretty easy, and the new crystal buff system can make you pretty overpowered. Magic spells are…

This is a sad "no". The game does some things right - re-making the old SNES gameplay is quite well done. The action stages at the beginning and the end of each area are very similar and play well. Even including the flaws of the old version - If you're not playing on hard difficulty, you can just ignore all strategy when fighting most bosses and just rush them spamming attacks i/e. But the really bad flaws are in the added stuff in the simulation game parts and they are many: - They tacked…

Absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Action segments are not improved by implementation of a scavenger hunt. First sword swing is now horizontal, rather than an overhead slash, making for more difficulty with flying targets. Bosses are somehow worse, requiring simple attack spam rather than precise movements and positioning. Town sections largely involve staring at the screen, doing nothing as you wait for more mana, which does not regen naturally in any way. Tower defense sections just make me want to play a…

Turning Actraiser into a tower defense game was… a choice. I'm going to recommend this with a huge "ehhhhh maybe?" Some other things: the platforming sections aren't nearly as tight control-wise as the original ones. The town planning is significantly different, even if you take the tower defense bits out. The story is significantly fleshed out to the point where it has one, and it's OK but nothing super-great. You can be blocked in the town-building sections by quests that sometimes require…

Being a fan of the SNES original I was looking forward to this release but was so disappointed by it to the point that I didn't even finish it. The ground-breaking original successfully combined platforming and city-building gameplay in a story in which a defeated God freed each region of the world of monsters in order to allow His people to settle and live in peace. This remake attempted to recapture that magic but failed to stick the landing. The game does a good job in updating the…

I really want to like ActRaiser Renaissance, as it makes an admirable attempt to add more to the original ActRaiser. But ultimately, one of ActRaiser's greatest strengths was its tight pacing, and that is completely gone here. The "upgrades" from the original game are either worse than the original, or just a sidegrade. In trying to flesh out stories, they somehow made it less interesting. If you have a passing interest in a new/old game, your mileage might vary. If you have fond memories of the original and are looking to either recommend it to a friend, or indulge in some polished nostalgia - this game doesn’t have a lot to offer. Controls are still rigid and don’t really feel modernized much. New game modes were contrived to make the civ building portion more action-packed, but it feels counterintuitive. Its very cute and will give you lots of nostalgia if you played the original SNES game. The graphics are decent and soundtrack good. But then... The amount of chapters in this game is the same as the original. Now instead of adding extra chapters, they opted to pad the game out with extra dialogue, A LOT of extra dialogue, and a terrible, very slow and boring tower defense mode that you can't avoid playing. I stuck this out for the top shelf femboy angel, but this remake sucks. All the tower defense stuff is really bad, the graphics are mostly hideous (top shelf femboy angel aside) and they really could have taken the opportunity to make the action sequences have tighter controls and a little more challenge. 15 hours of blech.

Given this, I do like the action sequences much better than the quasi-defense you do in the original, however - the interruptions on the original seem a bit more in pace with growing the town. The overworld gameplay loop is pretty simple and fun and the additional characters and story elements are an improvement from the SNES game from over thirty years ago. The side scrolling segments are also simple and fun but the characters and monsters are just so ugly. 3D renders that look bad to me instead of just making good quality sprite work. I'd recommend picking this up on sale if you have nostalgia for the orignal. Playing it on Steam Deck OLED.

In short, it's nowhere near as bad as people say, but the tower defense sections are both half-baked and unnecessarily pad the length of the game with a lot of tedious trial-and-error busywork. Renaissance is a case of going above and beyond when you're not needed to. The original SNES game was a snappy, fun game that combined some solid action platforming with some mild city-building and god-game aspects in the overworld. The reason is simple: pretty much everything they added detracts from the experience rather than improves it. Just beat the core Actraiser game in ~12.5 hours. This is a "yes, but" review. Yes, I do recommend this. Actraiser is a fun game. There are 2 elements: 1) side scrolling hack and slash 2) city building with angel defense against invading demons. This is where the review is going to switch focus to the "but" with new elements in the game. For some reason, the devs felt the original SNES game needed more. They have added a number of things that I like in concept but not really a fan of…

TLDR: If you have a nostalgia itch for this series, this game may scratch it, but it is a Frankenstein of a game, that is trying to do too much at once while trying to cater to the old fans. Occasionally the game, and story, that could have been shine through and it works. Unfortunately those are only brief glimpses. The rest of the time who ever designed this thing needed to switch to decaf and think a little harder about whether they were making a mobile game or a console game. Worth…

I know I say this a lot but Actraiser Renaissance is so dope. This game is the greatest. How does it exist

The letters...OMG! Better keep the old memories and don't touch them. Awesome Soundtrack by Yuzo, even the Anime like artworks aren't bad, BUT everythings doesn't fall into place. Graphics and animations don't match. The gameplay is like a browser game, nothing really special. I am very disappointed, because in former times Actraiser was a highlight on the Super Nintendo!!!

I loved this game when I was younger, must have beaten it a few times. This version looks beautiful in comparison. It is updated for today while keeping the classic look to everything. The one gripe I have is the tower defense modes. I am not a huge fan of tower defense games, and more than half this game has become a tower defense game. Every map has you going through about 5 tower defense battles and they can get hectic. It would probably be better if they would give you a run down…

The Actraiser Renaissance is pretty awesome. I played the OG Actraiser game years ago. The gameplay and graphics are really good, it stays true to everything from the original. They have revved it up with a more in depth plot, so you end up having a more involved story line where you can connect with the characters a little deeper than in the original game. One main example I can think of is that when building your town, you periodically have extra quests you must complete. There are enemies…

I honestly can't play this with the art style and how different the sidescrolling feels from the original. Its neat that you can play with the retro music but I dont feel like this is worth the money Also, I hate the angel now.

A downgrade from the original in every way, except for the updated OST. If you have never played the original ActRaiser before, you would be doing a disservice to yourself by allowing this pitiful remake to be your introduction to the series. Keep in mind, Square Enix has their name on this title. There is no excuse for it to look and play like a mobile game. Pros: + The new OST is a fantastic re-imagining of the original score + The hand drawn art in the menus and during character dialogue…

I actually really enjoyed this remake. The character development was nice, the siege battles were fun, and overall, it's a nice remake.

lets start this off with this is a remake not a copy of what was on super nes, it does have parts of the older game in it but a few things have been removed. you have to give them ideas to build things like farms and other things that seems to have been 100% taken away, you do get to give a type of item, per zone. i do and don't like it as it makes you feel like you're doing less. to add to that you can must go into lairs to close that are fixed to story, unlike the old game where you…
