Age of Wonders is a 1999 turn-based strategy game co-developed by Triumph Studios and Epic MegaGames, and published by Gathering of Developers. Age of Wonders underwent a long production cycle, and was originally developed under the name World of Wonders. Many reviewers report that the Steam version is broken on modern systems, recommending GOG instead. [1][2][3][4] Some players note the game requires external fixes or workarounds to run on Windows. [5][6]

This game desperatly needs an update to make it run on modern systems. As is it is now it will be a miracle if you can even get the game to start.

This ♥♥♥♥ is unplayable as it constantly crashes. the game is 11/10 but the crashes are infuriating, fk steam for selling this game in this state

DO NOT BUY ON STEAM. It is completely broken on modern machines. Use GoG instead, it works perfectly. Anyway, the gameplay still holds up extremely well. So many races and units and abilities and building up your leader is incredibly fun. If you're into strategy or fantasy games, definitely give this one a shot

The very best of the serie. The graphics, the music, the writing, they all reigned supreme. The subsequent games have diminished in all aspects from this one (however implausible it might sound). It's just impressive to witness such a downgrade. Noteworthy, the game pocess the best written campaign of any strategy game I've ever played, and the reason comes from the inherent quality of its narrative, but also the …

I never played Age of Wonders when it came out, so this is my first time playing. And it shows that you can enjoy a 25 year old game without nostalgia factor. -The campaign is quite unique for its time, and even to this day, because you can make grand choices like Will you help the Dwarfs or the Frostlings. And this of course changes the story. Simply unheard of in a strategy game. The story/script is full of …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received favorable reviews according to the review aggregation website GameRankings. IGN reviewer Jason Bates wrote, "if you are at all interested in turn-based strategy games with a fantasy theme, go get this game". Bates praised many of the game's features including the graphics, gameplay mechanics, editor, and online connectivity, but said the music was uninspiring and called the sound effects "serviceable but bland". AllGame's Nick Woods wrote: "If you love strategy and role playing games, Age of Wonders is worth the purchase", giving it three-and-a-half stars out of five. However, GameZone's Jason Lambert gave it 6.3 out of 10, writing: "Small flaws and annoyances made this…

Which is a bit like a mix of Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic for those who aren't familiar with it. But only in Japanese.

neutral · AI labelView post →I allowed myself ONE game of Age of Wonders 4 to celebrate the successful release of Nighthawks and I’m crawling into bed at 1:35am, having successfully backstabbed, outmanoeuvred and connived my way into victory once again. There’s nothing like the blend of tactical fights + 4X.
positive · AI labelView post →Now, with that out of the way? I gotta be very honest with everyone here, 4X is not a genre I'm all that familiar with, I had never played a Civ game and it seemed like the entire genre just slipped by me, the only other ones I've played were Age of Wonders: Planetfall and Age of Wonders 4 (briefly)
neutral · AI labelView post →So I had a really fun idea inspired by a friend on Discord a bit ago. (thank you @nilly-chilly.bsky.social for the idea.) I'm gonna do a playthrough of a 4X game and give updates about how it's going in a narrative style. Could be fun. The question then: Age of Wonders 4 or Stellaris?

positive · AI labelView post →Masters of Magic enjoyers, Endless Legend I was easily the best successor game to that ever made. Like literally the only one that even gets close (yes I know about Age of Wonders, no, different, sorry). Sequel was shaping up to be that++, so, hopefully another banger?

neutral · AI labelView post →Okay yeah Age of Wonders 4 is probably the coolest strategy game ive picked up. Not only does it have insane levels of customization for your ruler, race, and civilization right at the start, but as a campaign goes on you get to customize them all even further, including physical transformations.

neutral · AI labelView post →In awe at the magic of Proton. This game, which first released in the previous millenium, runs perfectly in compatibility mode with Proton 4.11-13. Playable on Steam Deck but some of the UI elements are a little awkward and you have to summon the on-screen keyboard occasionally for save games or unit renaming. This remains the Age of Wonders game I love the most. They went all in with the classic fantasy setting for this turn-based strategy game. Every unit for every civ has a personalised…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very enjoyable - Would recommend for anyone who wants a fairly complex turn based strategy game The UI is about what you'd expect from a game this old, but there's a surprising amount of variety with plenty of factions, units, and abilities for heroes and units The tutorial is a bit lacking and you will probably find yourself missing info on how to progress in your empire building, but there are plenty of guides online to help you out Sidenote: If you get the error "exception during…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game has never worked for me. Unless an update is made to this game, I don't believe it will run for you. Sometime in the first chapter the game will freeze and you won't be able to play it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dear lord I bought Age Of Wonders 4 on a whim (ps5) and it’s probably the most in depth game I’ve ever played. Basically design your own fantasy race & ruler then try to take over the world by any means & magic
positive · AI labelView post →I really like 4X games (Civilization, Age of Wonders, etc). Recently I learned about an upcoming indie 4X game called Folk Emerging, a strategy game set in the Stone Age. The developer, who goes by "Enkidu," gave an interview (link below) with one answer that immediately made me more supportive. /1

neutral · AI labelView post →My ★★★★★ review of Age of Wonders 4 (2023): five stars, because in my last playthrough my empire was "mystic humans with Nature and Astral magic that decided to weaponize mist and turn themselves into naga" because that's just a thing you can do in this game (the customization is INSANE)

positive · AI labelView post →My favorite / most played game in 2025 was Age of Wonders 4. It's variety and production values have pretty much muted any other 4x game for me.
