What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 176 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (5,320 of 6,669 positive).
Players praise the game's complete, refined state and deep tactical combat. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize technical issues like a windowed mode bug and login problems. [4][5] Others find the game lacks depth and feels repetitive across factions. [6][7]

Just leaving this here because i dont want anyone else to buy this game the way it is now and then have the same issue. Basically if you buy planetfall now youll never be able to play it as for some reason now, when the game launches, it opens in a windowed mode. which isnt the problem. The problem is because the game opens this way, it doesnt register your mouse cursor for some reason in the correct spot so theres …

Really tried to like this one, but the depth just isn't there. It feels like there should be a ton of replayability with all the different factions, but the core gameplay loop never felt different enough between them. I would say my enjoyment of the game was mostly limited to the first or second playthrough, when I was still learning the mechanics. If you decide to pick this up, I would wait for a deep, deep sale. …

I bought this game not long after it was released, but didn't play it until three to four years later. For whatever reason like many people I just couldn't get into it, however I did manage eventually, and let me tell you this, this is the best 4X game I've ever played! As far as I know this is the only 4X game with X-COM like combat, though not exactly like X-COM, it's very fun regardless. This game has everything, …

Ever wish that Civilization was more overtly combat-focused? Are games too long for you? Looking for a more streamlined experience? Then this is the game for you. With about 15 hours played, I've completed several games, a feat unheard of for Civ fans. The game plays very much like Civ, but with enough changes to differentiate itself as a completely unique experience. The combat is the most interesting part for me. …

Play This instead of Age Of Wonders 4 - Why? Welll.... 1. It's complete 2. No more DLC ???? oh did you need more? It's everything Age Of Wonders 4 COULD be ironically. Less customization OBVIOUSLY - But the game is refined and COMPLETE.

60 of 322 · most liked firstThis game is quite interesting for the year it was released. It plays very similarly to Age of Wonders, but it was released two years before Age of Wonders came out. Which is a bit like a mix of Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic for those who aren't familiar with it. But only in Japanese.

neutral · AI labelView post →Ignore the negative reviews, some turkroach got banned off the Hearts of Iron IV Discord for using some sus Politian as his pfp, so they're bot raiding all Discord servers for Paradox games and review-bombing them. The game works well and is very tight in controls, it is a 4X game that used to have a very competitive MP scene since the balance was mostly solid. With Sci-Fi 4X games being as rare as they are, give this a try if you find this interesting.

neutral · AI labelView post →I allowed myself ONE game of Age of Wonders 4 to celebrate the successful release of Nighthawks and I’m crawling into bed at 1:35am, having successfully backstabbed, outmanoeuvred and connived my way into victory once again. There’s nothing like the blend of tactical fights + 4X.

I gotta be very honest with everyone here, 4X is not a genre I'm all that familiar with, I had never played a Civ game and it seemed like the entire genre just slipped by me, the only other ones I've played were Age of Wonders: Planetfall and Age of Wonders 4 (briefly)

I'm gonna do a playthrough of a 4X game and give updates about how it's going in a narrative style. Could be fun. The question then: Age of Wonders 4 or Stellaris?
neutral · AI labelView post →I came into “Age of Wonders: Planetfall” after playing Age of Wonders 4 for well over a thousand hours. For me, the systems were similar enough to make it a breeze to get into, but the tutorial does a good job on its own to ensure that’s not a requirement. Even so, the highlight of the game must be the empire mode. (7/10) The empire mode allows you to create a new empire that encompasses each of the custom characters you make and facilitates progression between games, ensuring each victory…

Use the keyboard shortcut for window mode (e.g. alt+ enter) and everyhing should work fine again. If you change it in the options menu to fullscreen the game will launch in full screen from here on as well. For all who care about my 50 cents about the game: It's a great game, with a beginner unfriendly UI. Lot's of status…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The campaign gamemode isn't that great, but the galactic empire mode is amazing. The fact that you can build an empire over time unlocking additional powers and abilities really adds to the replayability.

positive · AI labelView post →I refunded this after about an hour when it first came out. Coming straight from Age of Wonders III probably didn’t help, the shift to sci-fi, the different pacing, and the way systems were presented just felt off at the time. It didn’t grab me, and I didn’t feel like pushing through to figure it out. Got access to it again later and decided to give it another go after spending a lot of time with Age of Wonders 4, and it’s a completely different story. Once you understand how Triumph…

The interface was kind of annoying to use, and a lot of the tooltips were worded in a way that made things more confusing than they needed to be. I’m sure there’s a good game underneath all of it if you’re willing to put in the time and really learn how everything works. But the way the game starts just didn’t pull me in, and I don’t…

Bought it on sale a few weeks ago almost have 50 hours played 0 bugs or crashes great game 9/10 would buy again don't listen to the haters.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Wonders 1 is actually still a really good, charming fantasy strategy game, and Age of Wonders 2...I think actually does some really good changes to everything Never played Age of Wonders 3 and 4
positive · AI labelView post →A significant part of the game is tactical combat, but good strategy at the higher strategic layer largely trivializes the tactical combat phase. Also, the scope feels small for a 4x game. It seems like it was built around multiplayer gameplay and it's just not what I'm looking for.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a long-time fan of the Age of Wonders series, I was initially skeptical about Planetfall. It seemed like the developers were simply trying to make a quick profit by changing the setting while leaving the core mechanics intact. However, after completing the game, I can honestly say I was wrong. Planetfall doesn't just shift Age of Wonders into a sci-fi universe - it fundamentally reworks many of the gameplay mechanics, resulting in a distinctly different experience that still retains the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Okay yeah Age of Wonders 4 is probably the coolest strategy game ive picked up. Not only does it have insane levels of customization for your ruler, race, and civilization right at the start, but as a campaign goes on you get to customize them all even further, including physical transformations.

While the tactical combat engine is excellent, the rest of the game feels like a soulless chore. Instead of embracing the "Master of Orion 2" DNA—which would have been the logical evolution for a Sci-Fi AoW—we got a boring, brown-and-grey ground-slogger. There is no "Sense of Wonder." positive · AI labelView post →The game likes to freeze for auto combat, it likes to freeze on loading screens, and it likes to freeze on enemy turns. Honestly this game is borderline unplayable. Combat can be interesting; everything around it is opaque tech trees, forgettable colony building, and an AI that either folds or cheats without looking smart. The sci-fi setting is generic wallpaper, the writing is serviceable at best, and once the scripted missions are done the sandbox doesn’t give you a reason to…
