AMID EVIL
Developer Indefatigable
Amid Evil is a first-person shooter video game developed by Indefatigable and published by New Blood Interactive. The game's dark fantasy theme, action-oriented gameplay, and retro-inspired visual elements have earned it frequent descriptions as a spiritual successor to 1994's Heretic and 1995's Hexen. Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 206 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (7,200 of 7,751 positive).
Players widely praise Amid Evil as a fantastic boomer shooter with stunning visuals and creative level design. [1][2][3][4] Some reviewers note that the combat can feel bland or the levels confusing, leading to frustration. [5][6][7][8] Many compare it favorably to classic fantasy shooters like Heretic and Hexen, calling it a spiritual successor. [2][4][9][10]

Being a fan of both Quake and Heretic/Hexen the spark didn't really jump with this one. It is well designed on one hand but on the other it's also terribly boring. There isn't the grittiness of a Quake nor a dark, fantasy vibe as in Heretic/Hexen either. It isn't a bad game per se but it just didn't click for me to stay with it maybe due to overexaggerated expectations.

If you miss the days of Heretic and Hexen, stop reading this and just buy it already. AMID EVIL is easily one of the best "boomer shooters" I’ve played in years. The first thing that hits you is the aesthetic. It’s got that low-poly, retro look, but with modern lighting and colors that make every world feel distinct and massive. The level design is top-notch—no boring corridors here, just huge, imaginative arenas …

AMID EVIL This game spent over 2 years rotting in my library, and I will regret that for the rest of my life. By far one of the coolest games I've played recently, this is an exceptionally perfect game with an 8 hour campaign and a bunch of other side content. To put it simply really, this game is like DOOM with fantasy, and magic elements mixed into it. You could also literally run it on anything I'm sure. New …

One of the best traditional boomer shooters of all time, this is a perfect example of everything its genre should be: An outstanding arsenal without a single uninteresting or unoriginal weapon, great level design that lends itself to a fun, frenetic combat system that constantly throws massive hordes of the most varied enemies I've seen in a shooter, enjoyable and distinct bosses each looking over respective domains …

A fantastic FPS boomer shooter that has some really nice designs and weapons for the game. The combat system is also pretty well done, and the levels are pretty well designed as well. The enemies are also perfect, especially for the level's theme. Definitely one of my favorite FPS of all time, and would recommend it to anyone.

83% of the 206 Steam reviewers we collected recommend AMID EVIL. The complaint that keeps coming up: some levels are confusing and frustrating to navigate. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The early access release of Amid Evil did receive press coverage, though nearly all outlets opted to provide a first impressions summary rather than a full review. In one such example, PC Gamer UK offered the summation, "A truly weird (and beautiful) fantasy setting lays the groundwork for a worthy ode to Heretic." Reviewers typically praised the weapon and level designs, while some criticized the enemy design and others criticized glitches in the pre-release version. The full release of Amid Evil received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Reviewers praised the variety of weapons and environments, comparing the game favorably to…

60 of 330 · most liked firstWe're kinda spoilt for new Heretics and Hexens these days, huh? On top of these, there's the Hands Of Necromancy series, the entire Abysm mod series (five Hexen-meets-Souls-likes!), we've got Amid Evil and its expansion, Faithless (fantastic mod) is leaving early access soon, and probably many more

neutral · AI labelView post →Almost everything in this bundle is both great and super cheap. £1.45 a game if you buy 7 or more. Amid Evil, Dusk, Stop Dead, Post Void, Sprawl and Hyper Demon are rad FPS games. The Dread X collections are fantastic indie 'cryptkeeper' style horror anthologies. Pathologic 2 is art-game hell, etc.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Before anyone reads this, yes I played the entire campaign and will be playing the DLC. “oh then you must have enjoyed it so why the negative review?!” I come from a time when the amount of time spent in a game did not mean that you were having a good time, that has always been a strange false equivalency. A game can be very short but still be high in quality and enjoyment. I wanted to give this “boomer shooter” a fair shake so that anyone, including any devs reading this, won’t try to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Both Ex-Zodiac and Wild Guns Reloaded are in this bundle, two of the best on-rails shooters in years. Honestly, almost everything in here is top notch and it's $1.50 per game if you get seven. Final Vendetta is a great Final Fight tribute. Amid Evil & Dusk are boomshoot kings. Blood West is great.
neutral · AI labelView post →The game is visually stunning, but gameplay is bland and dull. First of all, Amid Evil has little to do with Heretic/Hexen except for the fantasy theme. What it actually reminded me most of all is American McGee's Alice: visually cool, surreal, and mesmerizing, but with weak gunplay, boring puzzles, and irritating platforming. The difference is that Alice delivered a fine story and narrative, unlike Amid Evil. 1) Levels are impressive visually, but pretty dull and not so interesting to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I waited a couple of years before I got a PC to run Doom 2016, and ten years after that I still find this game was worth waiting for it. It's a short and polished journey, almost without overcomplications and trash mechanics populating/polluting it's sequel. Remastered Doom keeps it all constrained to deliver a glimpse of what OG Doom can look like made today. It's an arena after arena of tight bloody fights with demons to the beat of an awesome soundtrack. Nothing more and nothing less, just…

positive · AI labelView post →Have you ever played something that you didn't totally vibe with, but understood why so many people love it? Amid Evil is exactly that for me. Make no mistake: as a shooter, from a mechanical standpoint, Amid Evil is great. Movement is silky smooth, the weapons are all distinct and consistently useful, and the level design gets real weird by the end. Before playing, I wasn't sold on it - a shooter with melee-ish projectile weapons that mostly focus on leading targets? Thankfully, I was…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was not able to finish AMID EVIL the first time i got the game. Now some years later the game was working flawless on my machine and finally beat it. I must say its one of my favorite new boomer shooters! My top 3 now are probably amid evil, hrot and dusk!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed Amid Evil at first - but this game really got under my skin at multiple points. Checkpoints are few and far between, and some areas in the later game feel intentionally made to be a health check instead of something you can dodge without losing progress. Of the Boomer Shooter ressurrection games that I've played, I think Amid Evil is the weakest and worst of them all for the pure frustration it tended to get in me, with several levels having a 30+ minute timer to completion…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →OHHHH THE GAME IS CALLED 'AMID EVIL' BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE 'A MEDIEVAL'

neutral · AI labelView post →Amid Evil is a nice change of pace from the usual boomer shooter formula. The fantasy setting gives it a unique identity, and the magic-based weapons are surprisingly fun to use, especially as they become more powerful throughout the game. The level design is creative and encourages exploration, making each area feel distinct. The maps can be a little confusing to navigate, although I do enjoy the atmosphere and weapon variety.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amid Evil is one of the best, most gorgeous FPS games I've ever played and I replay it every two-three years, never fails to be a good time Pseudoregalia and Metro Gravity are fantastic platformer/Metroidvanias featuring HUGE thighs Anthology Of The Killer is funniest game I've played in years
positive · AI labelView post →AMID EVIL is one of those games that you’ll enjoy for a few minutes, and then realize it lacks a lot of soul that is needed to make a successful “boomer shooter.” You see, I grew up in the golden era of the 80s and 90s, when we all played DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, and Unreal Tournament on our PCs, and it created some of the greatest gaming memories ever. AMID EVIL tries to capture that magic, but unfortunately, it dropped the ball when it mattered most. To create an exciting,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amid Evil is the kind of game that reminds you why you fell in love with shooters in the first place. It doesn’t just borrow from the classics, it understands them, refines them, and unleashes something that feels both nostalgic and completely fresh. Its roots in Hexen and Heretic are obvious in the best way: magical weapons, labyrinthine levels, and that distinct blend of fantasy and first-person carnage. But it never feels stuck in the past. Instead, it takes that foundation and builds…

neutral · AI labelView post →The re-release of Heretic and Hexen is a welcome surprise, Amid Evil however, is better in every possible way. The combat, level design, art direction, all done better here.. get this instead.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is very much a N-64 type game. Not just the graphics but the game loop, combat, level design ect. I knew I wasn't gonna recommend this game from the first few hours I played it, but I didn't plan on writing a negative review initially. But... The game plays fine. Combat / flow all feel smooth. Its just, not very exciting or entertaining. You get a number of weapons to cycle through all with alt firing modes, but honestly, I've played the majority of the game just using the energy sword…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amid Evil: Fuck dude. Just fuck. This was such a fucking good game. The art direction, the music, the level design, the WEAPONS. Easily up there as one of my favorite boomer shooters.
positive · AI labelView post →I used to think that I've grown out of video games, don't find video games fun anymore and that there is just clear lack of creativity or innovation. WRONG on all counts New Blood has proven yet again that video games just need to be fun and THAT'S ALL. Amid Evil is simplistic in nature just like the classic video games from 90s and 2000s era. This is what we've been missing all this time FUN, just fun. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is a breath of fresh air in the gaming industry.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played through the last of Amid Evil today, pretty decent game, enjoyed the vibes of the worlds, the weapons, though had some issues with some questionable platforming and difficulty spike right at the end but it wasn't enough to detract from me saying 'game good' uwu Now to ponder what's next!

neutral · AI labelView post →Level design is by far the weakest aspect of this game, it gets downright obnoxious at some point due to how confusing some levels get. Other than that, it's a blast overall.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, a great FPS game with a nice-looking art style and satisfying shooting. Instead of using your usual weapons, you are using maces, axes, or staffs to shoot magic projectiles at a huge variety of enemies. The game is not trying to be something unique and does not need to be at all. Simply put, an excellent Shooter if you are looking for something more grounded.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Champion from Amid Evil is pretty cool looking. Got that pulp fantasy look to him that fits the aesthetic of the rest of the game.
neutral · AI labelView post →I was always really into Heretic though and AE hits all the same notes while having plenty of original flavor. The arsenal of weapons are unique and interesting and the levels are wonderfully themed and imaginative. Not all of them are winners, especially if you don't love 3D platforming, but taken as a whole there is a great amount of quality content here that perfectly encapsulates why the core gameplay of those early fps games holds up to this day.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Science says I should love Amid Evil. This game ticks all the boxes for a bloodthirsty REH fan and FPS addict. But...aside from the gorgeous art design and splendid music, this game is kinda meh. It ain't bad. But if your shooty game can't make the shooty parts interesting, it seems a stumble.
neutral · AI labelView post →FPS suggestions: The Finals: Multiplayer PVP, no PVE content. Ready or Not: SWAT style FPS. Turbo Overkill: Fast movement boomer shooter, gets a little boring sometimes but its fine. Ultra Kill: I haven't played it but I know its a good game. Amid Evil: Boomer shooter like with mage type weapons.
neutral · AI labelView post →Considering how many modern games have melee systems that warp you towards enemies it is very funny to being playing Amid Evil and have the game warp enemies *to me* from like 10m away when I use the melee weapon.
neutral · AI labelView post →I don't see the point of this game. - It has no story, no dialogue, no characters, no voice acting, no cutscenes, no world building. A boomer shooter doesn't always need those elements, but at least some world building (and no, a few lines on inscription written on a badly readable font once in a while on a hidden spot on a wall don't count). - In a more damning manner, this game has no progression. Whatsoever. Sure, you can find different weapons (8 in total), but once you've found them all…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →MID Evil: In a modern age of boomer shooters, Amid Evil commits gaming's worst sin: No, not being a bad game - it's actually good (at what little) it does! I'm talking about the sin of being boring. Selaco, Cultic, Trepang2, Coven, Doom are games that all have an interesting gameplay hook that keeps you going. This game doesnt have one and is bare bones in comparison; Run the stage, kill the boss, repeat again and again until there's nothing more to do and I feel YOU the reader can spend your…

positive · AI labelView post →Visually this game is amazing, one of the rare games where I would stop what I'm doing just to appreciate the environment. The combat is pretty standard boomer shooter, I think the weapons are a bit more interesting than most boomer shooters however in terms of their special effects. Bosses aren't very interesting. Music is good. Each world has it's own set of enemies, and while for the most part they differ in just stats (health, movement speed, etc.) some have interesting effects specific…
