A very divisive game for me personally. So I had heard this game was pretty good as it’s been on my radar for a while and then before I knew it, the sequel came out, so I was falling behind and decided to finally give it a go. In some aspects I had some fun but in other ways, it was very disappointing. So what did I think? Visually, I love this game’s comic book artstyle. It reminded me of another indie shooter, …

Not the best boomer shooter out there, but def a fun time for fans of the genre mixed with some Lovecraftian vibes I think this game is perfectly serviceable for what it's trying to be. There's not much criteria for making a good game in this style, especially when you have a unique art style to pair with it that separates it from the rest. What does take more effort is making a "great" game in this genre. The game …

First run took ~5 hours. Finished everything in 8.1 hours. The game isn’t brutally difficult it just punishes bad positioning. Once you stop panicking and start moving, it clicks fast. Combat feels good, soundtrack fits perfectly, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Short, intense, and fun. Recommended.

Pretty fun boomer shooter with a cool comic book art style and a great Lovecraft-inspired atmosphere. The guns feel powerful, the combat is fast, and it does a good job of keeping the action entertaining. It definitely has some flaws—enemy encounters can get repetitive, the difficulty be very overwhelming of enimies, and a few levels drag on longer than they should. Still, the strong art direction and satisfying …

Had Forgive Me Father’s developers just stuck with making a good, focused retro FPS game; this would be an easy recommendation. The art style is unique and interesting, the weapons and enemies have decent variety, and the challenge ramps up without becoming unfairly difficult. However, it feels overlong. Some chapters (and levels) feel ridiculously long and not particularly well-paced. The story is not very engaging …

76% of the 249 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Forgive Me Father. The complaint that keeps coming up: difficulty can feel unbalanced. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The early access version was positively received by PC Gamer, which praised the visual style and animations. The publication favorably compared the art style to XIII. PC Gamer reviewed it again several months later and was critical on the story and the presence of many cameos and references to other intellectual properties, which they felt detracted from the Lovecraftian theme. However they were overall optimistic about the direction of the game and how it would be at launch. CBR was also positive during early access, particularly highlighting the madness mechanics. Kotaku noted that the difficulty decreased over the course of the Early Access version, as the player would become…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I personally don't recommend this, but I can see why people enjoy it. I had to turn off the voice acting pretty quickly, as it was pretty annoying, and while the art and level design are very good, it feels like you're shooting cardboard cut-outs with absolutely no feedback to damage to them or from them.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's no time for fairy tales with such monstrosities occurring.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall a decent boomshoot. Not great, not terrible. Standout stuff for me was the metal music and lovecraftian atmosphere. Won't go into the problems as not in the mood (bite me) so check out the negative reviews for that. However a short campaign easily negates many of those issues imo. Buy on sale, play it on easy and change the madness mechanic screen colour effect to OFF is my humble advice.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed this game for a while, but the performance drops in later levels of the game make it unplayable on the Steam Deck and that puts me off continuing entirely. It's a shame that it seems the sequel may suffer the same issues. I know it won't happen, but if these games ever got a major performance patch I'd readily continue where I left off and even get the second game.

neutral · AI labelView post →I really want to like the game but in the end, it's not worth the time. The worst is the level design. Some good stuff, but padded with uninspired sections if not whole levels. This is far too long, can cut 25% and work on better execution will have dramatically be a better decision. Have a lot's of lisibility problem that make even harder to enjoy the game. This is one of those game i lower the difficulty to to get it done faster. The unique style is interesting and I like the music though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's like my ex, looks good but not really fun & good in reality. Pros: -Unique art style. I have never played anything like this. 2D cutouts in a 3D world. It also has a problem, (read cons) -Lovecraftian theme. That's all. Cons: -Story is nonexistent. -Gameplay is super repetitive unlike Doom. -You can't see anything in the corners as its very dark, the game gives you flashlight but its useless as you can't shoot while its ON. -The art style is unique but you'll miss many enemies…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Forgive Me Father 2 is a first-person shooter game featuring dark comic-like visuals and nightmarish enemies inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's mythos. It's a journey of madness, redemption, and intense action. Forgive Me Father 2 is available now on Steam from indie developer @bytebarrel.bsky.social

I tried a lot of different solutions using advice from online forums and none seem to work. Its a pitty cuz i remember playing this game some years ago on my old PC and having lotsa fun with it 😞 👎
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A decent Doom like boomer shooter but my main issues with the game are 1) in my opinion you take way too much damage from a single attack 2) the lack of Feedback when you get shot can often leave you scratching your head over what caused you to die in the first place and 3) the lack of ammo can at times make the game borderline unplayable the higher the difficulty you play on. I'm playing on hard and the game is just an unbalanced mess (my opinion). I could lower the difficulty but honestly I…

neutral · AI labelView post →FPS Games have had a storytelling curse put on them ever since John Carmack compared Story in Doom to Story in Porn, and thus, FPS Games and Retro FPS games especially now are forever held to ignore stories, fail at environmental storytelling, while the rest of the game is polished to the enth degree. My issue with this is that it kills the longevity of the game, whether it be on a first playthrough and the urge to continue, or wanting to replay the game when there's nothing to grasp onto. FMF…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I 100%'d the game twice and I really wanted to like it but the platforming sections are awful, the game is too long and the story is just "okay." The reset points feel like a superfluous mechanic. Also ♥♥♥♥ the Big Ugly Fish boss fight. I'd recommend waiting for a sale
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's too simplistic and clumsy to be a great game, but it's still fun to play, and the art style is gorgeous.

neutral · AI labelView post →I'll admit I'm not some kind of boomer shooter expert, nor have I played loads. I've played better shooters such as Doom and Dusk but I haven't completed them. Yet I completed forgive me father, I think that counts for something. I think its a mix of the cool weaponry, kinda janky levels and polished artwork that carry this whole experience here. Another reviewer wrote that the story is a complete rug pull at the end and I'd agree, nonetheless I still felt satisfied completing this game and…

neutral · AI labelView post →I don't understand the negative reviews. The gunplay is so satisfying, especially in tandem with how fast you move. The art style is very stylish and unique, but more importantly, it's clear- in the sense that you can always tell exactly what you're looking at. Enemies stand out vividly, which I find valuable in a game like this. Plus their designs are dope, and often change based on how you choose to engage them. Like the liquidator; shooting their tank of green fluid completely transforms…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has great visuals and art style but the gameplay really falls off as you play and progress through the chapters. It's a shame because it has potential but the game overall felt increasingly frustrating with the weird map designs and "puzzles" which at times just confused me due to the map lay out. Instead of getting that "DOOM" kind of gameplay where you'd blast through a bunch of monsters and have a good general idea of what you're doing and where you're mean't to go, you got this weird mix of…

There are a couple bugs that may have you restart a level, but other than that it's alright. 100% achievement completion means beating two playthroughs (one with each character), finding a couple secrets and surviving 20 waves in endless mode. Difficulty is optional. Overall, it's okay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Art 8/10 Music 8/10 But many times devs forget that a good game relies on a good gameplay, the gameplay is 1/10 Bad level design, bad mechanics, the code is barely holding the game together, I get that people are enjoying the game because it feels like a good boomer-shooter, but even for what it aims the game fails enemy AI, movement and combat feels off, not polished and they do not have any synergy neither any harmony, nothing in any fights click, only the last few fights of the game have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Forgive Me Father 2 really irritated me. I wanted to like that game, but the restricted loadout and the fact that you can only change it at the shop forced me to just scrap hours of progress to go back to the shop and swap out weapons or spells to get past tough spots. unrelated snowbunny
negative · AI labelView post →I put off playing Forgive Me Father because I assumed it was a survival horror game. Wow, was I mistaken! It's an arena shooter with a groovy comicbook art style and distinct upgrade paths. I dig it! Also, I can shotgun Lovecraftian fish guys in the face! 5/5!
positive · AI labelView post →I like these "boomer shooters" as a sort of cozy game. This one happened to stand out a lot to me visually. The entire game, up until the last boss battle, i was constantly looking at the environment and trying to get a good look at enemy design. The combat and progression are simple and satisfying. Although i didn't like having to choose either a cool gun or more health with your skill points. Then the final "world" had some insane visuals, but the level design was not ideal. I see what they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an essential boomer shooter with a neat weapons and abilities upgrade system thrown in. It started a little slow. The levels were a bit simplistic and overall it wasn't very challenging, but at some point, early in the game things started to get more interesting and, oh boy, am I glad I sticked with it up to that moment. The game is very good overall. The visual style is the first thing that catches the eye, but also enemy and weapon variety, upgrade system and the fact, that you can…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun retro fps game, bit frustrating levels at the end but nothing major that tears down the fun. It also has replay value because of the skills you can unlock, which allows you to play with your favourite gun majority of the time. In the beginning you need to use several guns because of the few ammunition you have. Story has a pretty decent plot twist aswell Defo high recommend especially when its on sale then its a steal
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game for pretty cheap. I wanted to give it a try and spent around 20 hours to complete it. If i finished it, why am i giving a thumbs down? It's a meh game, the main selling point is obviously the graphics, which are fantastic and I must admit they are cool to look at, but for example the enemy variety feels dull, I do like some minor details here and there, but the game feels extremely mediocre. It felt too long and too boring. The gun upgrades feel like the meme "would you rather…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art is in this game is pretty amazing, the choice of using 2D cell shaded art was a solid choice and the color scheme definitely gave off a comic book horror vibe. Solid choices on the music as well. Metal music while blasting Cthulu demons, amazing. The only drawbacks for me were the bits of lore left lying around were disjointed and didn’t make a lot of sense, the voice narration also felt pretty flat most of the time. Overall though, would definitely recommend this for someone that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great compact journey and take on the Lovecarftian mythos. Guns felt good, abilities were mostly useful wihtout being OP, levels were nice and breezy. The VAs for the Priest and Journalist were good. though I will admit the latter took time to grow on me. Nothing bleeding edge in terms of mechanics, but it does everything well. The art style also adds to the feel of the game.
