The art design and atmosphere are flawless; it is almost like a moving painting. Unfortunately, unresponsive controls, clunky platforming physics, and unfair punishment overshadow this potential. I wish the gameplay was as fluid as its visual achievement.

The Penitent One walked so that I could 100% this game and lose my mind. Visually a masterpiece. However the game is riddled with piss poor subpar voice acting. fighting bosses and enemies is not fun, the game, is not fun. Its not fun to win, its not fun to lose. Its a punishment, its not a game that brings any enjoyment. Art style is gorgeous, gameplay is fantastic, brutally difficult but still fair. Story is a little difficult to understand but very interesting. A standout in the metroidvania genre, up there with Hollow Knight and Ori in my opinion.

The game has a phenomenal atmosphere, amazing location soundtracks, and a great Dark Souls-style lore delivery. However, it can feel incredibly tedious at times. The backtracking is overwhelming, fast-travel portals are highly non-obvious and cost a ridiculous 20k Tears, and the instant-death spikes are infuriating. Dying to spikes means you have to run through hordes of enemies all over again, which led me to …

78% of the 273 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Blasphemous. The complaint that keeps coming up: clunky controls and unresponsive movement. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Blasphemous received "generally favorable" reviews according to review aggregator website Metacritic. it received praise for its visual style, combat, boss battles and interconnected world while criticism was reserved towards its level design, gameplay mechanics and backtracking. In 2021, GQ España named Blasphemous one of the best Spanish-made games ever. The game won the awards for "Best Spanish Development" and "Indie Game of the Year" at the 2019 Titanium Awards, where it was also nominated for "Best Art". I really do think Blasphemous is an amazing game, artistically. I joke that it’s the most Catholic video game ever made. In all seriousness, I feel like it’s trying to communicate the horror of a worldview centering sin, guilt, and penance. Especially when dealing with an unfair divinity.

Amazing artwork, great atmosphere and soundtrack. Movement is a bit janky. Combat is fine. Boss mechanics are good but not great. Overall, one of the better metroidvanias out there. But there is a major issue: the game doesn't respect your time. Almost all metroidvanias have multiple endings and reward exploration with additional lore, bosses and areas. Blasphemous has multiple endings as well, and a good chunk of side content that needs to be completed to achieve the "true" ending. This…

You know, in a weird way this game really made me appreciate my faith in Christ even more lol. The predominant theme in this game is suffering, all to atone for your sins and appeal to the whims of some capricious, eldritch force called the Miracle. No matter what you do, though, your absolution is never guaranteed, and whether you do receive absolution or punishment, the end result is the same: more suffering, more pleading, never certain whether "enough" is enough, only watching as you…

Love the art, the lore, the soundtrack, the boss design, and the combat. The platforming and how the quest and stories are told is another story. Maybe I just suck ass at platforming but is it supposed to be this frustrating? I get it fits the world design for things to be rough but the ladder jumps and those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bells get me every time. Not to mention the overwhelming amount of enemies like those jumping dudes who exist solely to annoy the player. Why is there no double jump or air dash?…

Indie developers once again putting the entire AAA industry to shame. Atmosphere, music, locations and bosses are on point. The pixel art is beautiful, the NPCs are really good and finding the collectibles is actually rewarding. The progression is good, you gradually feel like you're becoming stronger, and the combat is fun. I have no bad things to say except F*CK the time trials and the Shipyard, thankfully they're optional. This game is a masterpiece and an instant classic

The presentation in this game is very good and I get why a lot of people like this game. Sadly for me, I found this game more tedious to play than fun since your base movement feels quite clunky and it never really offers you progression on said movement. If moving fast and being able to zip through areas you've done with limited movement in the past is important to you in a metroidvania, then you should probably avoid this one.

Blasphemous is a marriage of Castlevania and Dark Souls, and often times it reaches the same highs as those two IP. But, it also hits the same lows, sometimes even more so than the inspiration it borrows from. I haven't been this frustrated playing a Metroidvania in a long time, on one hand you get visceral combat, arguably the most gorgeous pixel art ever put into a game, and a hauntingly macabre world on the brink of total desolation with the Miracle to blame.
