What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 102 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (121 of 157 positive).
Many players praise the game for its strong nostalgic value, especially for those who played it as children. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game has not aged well, citing poor controls and difficulty. [4][5][6] A few players criticize the removal of multiplayer and skirmish modes, and report technical issues. [7][6][8]

This game doesn't even have the multiplayer aspect which also includes the PVE skirmish against AI even in singleplayer. There's no point in buying this game just for the campaign. Go to the Internet Archive and download Army Men 1 and 2 for free, and you can play with the skirmish aspect that's been gutted from this version.

I enjoyed this game, very fun so far especially because Im a big fan of the Army Men series. It's very different how its a birds eye view shooter compared to a 3rd/1st person shooter like Sarge's Heroes (The first Army Men I played). Im glad this game is on steam and i hope 2K brings Army Men World War, Sarge's Heroes, Air Combat and Air Tactics to steam too!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the music is loud as all hell, and the game straight up doesn't work in windowed mode. Forcing it into it screws up one of the functions. Awesome game!!! brings back so many childhood memories! I highly recommend! works on 1920 x 1080 screens!

This was one of my favorite games in childhood. But I lost the disc with my old house when relocating. Thanks to 2K! I never thought I can buy it back on Steam!
Summarised from 34 of the 189 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 13, 2026. How summaries are made
76% of the 102 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Army Men. The complaint that keeps coming up: controls are outdated and awkward. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The Game Boy Color version received favorable reviews, while the PC version received mixed reviews, according to the review aggregation website GameRankings. Next Generation called the latter version "a solid, fun example of the genre, and anyone looking for a new strategy game with a very nice graphic twist should seriously consider this."

First was Space Station Silicon Valley, then Army Men Sarge's Heroes. Those got played quickly, so I started saying Cruisn USA. It has three marbles in the race and STILL has not been picked somehow

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At one point in my childhood these this series was the only video games I owned I still have the collection on disk to this day and this hit my nostalgia like a freight train. Army Men (1998) is a classic top down shooter by The 3DO Company where you play as Sarge a plastic soldier who dies… a lot. Tanks, mines, flamethrowers, your own explosives you name it. “Sarge is dead” becomes a regular occurrence. There’s actually some cool lore here with Green, Tan, Blue, and Gray factions, plus a WW2…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 3 was in development for the PlayStation 2 but never saw release. Only a small glimpse of the game has surfaced so far. Could more of the game still survive and can it one day be preserved? www.gamesthatwerent.com/2026/07/army...
neutral · AI labelView post →Sarge's War is an underated and remarkably self aware game that offers meta commentary on the unsustainable nature of the games industry. Then all those people got laid off and Major Malfunction came out with none of the original team and it sucked really bad. Anyway, I bought more Army Men games.
neutral · AI labelView post →If you played this as a kid, its great. Brought back so many good memories of playing this in my basement back when you couldn't use the phone and play online at the same time. My mom didn't like it very much
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an absolutely fantastic breakdown of the Army Men games that John's been working on for months. The franchise provides a surprisingly strong perspective for what happens when you put an N64 game on PS and vice-versa. Plus some really great level design that's often overlooked.
neutral · AI labelView post →The ambition for this game is crazy. They wanted to make Rogue Squadron for GBA. Though at times you get hints of Rebel Assault and even the speeder-bike level from Shadows of the Empire. They also made a solid GBA Army Men game and the underrated GBC Alone in the Dark New Nightmare port.

positive · AI labelView post →A great game of military strategy but in this game you control a toy army which i think is very nice and fun as it is different from others military strategy game !! if want try something new in military category this game is worth in my opinion ..have fun and enjoy !!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Games that are 20+ yr old and straight clones of the original should not be on Steam for $8.00. There are no launch options; or anything - honestly, this should be like $0.50c. The experience of fky controls in 2019 actually sort of ruined the nostalgia.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A favorite from way back when as a kid! Controls are the same at then: this means using the number pad for almost everything. Works on higher resolutions.

I remember playing them for hours on my Windows 98 computer and can still to this day remember many of the levels, voice lines, and soundtracks. I still have the original CDs for atleast 6 of the Army Men games and I cant get any of them to work without a virtual machine or an actual windows xp computer. These run great, work on windows 10, and somehow can go full screen on 1920x1080 which is worth rebuying alone.…

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm in the mood for garbage, so tonight at 9pm EDT (about an hour from now) I'll play Army Men: Soldiers of Misfortune on the PS2! This is a lazy Wii port of a game meant to cash in on the name recognition of Army Men, years after the 3DO company died. Surely it will be good?
negative · AI labelView post →-Quick Review- Army Men is a Top-Down Shooter developed by The 3DO Company and released in 1998. You play as plastic protagonist Sarge, and he’s usually dead because he got ran over by a tank, shot by a bazooka, ambushed by a squad, stepped on a mine, shot by a tank, melted by a flamethrower, ran over by the caravan he was escorting, accidental demolition incidents happen all the time too. Over 20 years later, I found this game and thought I could play this game again with few issues. Boy was I wrong, obviously these past 20+ years have caused me to look back on this game with nostalgia goggles on the entire time. The controls are terrible, the difficulty curve is ridiculous, and the balancing is practically non-existent because one second you're kicking ass and the next you're getting run over by a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish they still made games like this. I have so many good memories of playing this game over and over on my old box of a Gateway desktop on disk. I had the entire Army Men War Chest. I loved each and every one of my hundreds of plastic army men and being able to see my scenarios acted out in game was straight up magic. This is the exact same game as it was released in 1998. No modern ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to taint the developers original vision. Rest in peace 3DO. I can't thank you enough for making…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this a while ago because I played it as a kid. Unless you're going on a nostalgia trip I wouldn't spend the time or money on this. It hasn't aged well at all and suffers crashes pretty often. If you do buy this, then cheats are your friend in this unbalanced and unpolished game. Start a level, hit Esc, and then type Aeroballistics (case sensitive) to fill out your air-support slots. Plethora (case sensitive) will give you unlimited ammo for secondary weapons.
