What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 59 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (93 of 137 positive).
Players praise the game's challenging, engaging city-building and unique Aztec theme. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the AI voiceover, bugs, and lack of developer support. [4][5][6] Several players note the game requires constant attention and replaying to master. [7][8][9]

The AI English voiceover is awful (unnatural intonation, quasi-Microsoft Sam voice, inconsistent pronunciation of Nahuatl words, and overall weird diction) and distracting from gameplay. Even turning the voice effect volume to zero in the settings doesn't disable it and it still plays. I requested a refund. I was very interested in the setting and mechanics especially since historically/culturally accurate games …

This game is such a mess I don't know where to begin. Lack of direction (I have spent as much time trying to figure out HOW to do something as I have actual game play). Bugs galore (I'm currently in the first chapter and seem to have a game breaking bug I can't figure out or get past), lack of dev. response in bug reports, And the AI voiceover. I would rather have text. It's flat, devoid of anything human, and I …

I've had this game on my wish list forever and I was super happy to see an early release today. I jumped right in this morning around 6 hours ago and its been a blast. This game is very challenging and requires a lot of forethought. I started over twice before I was able to make it to Act 1 lmao. Pros: -It has Aztecs -UI is easy to understand -Easy to follow, no frills tutorial -Every choice matters -No game …

I'm writing this positive review after my 3rd time losing the campaign. This game is pretty great. If you're a fan of challenging city builders, you should definitely give this a try. I always seem to quit city builders when the micromanagement gets too tedious. This hasn't happened so far. Solving the challenges the game throws at you is rewarding--any mistakes you make could be deadly to your empire. I use those …

At this point, I think I can really recommend it – the game is intense, there is always something to do, and there is no time to get bored. The atmosphere is cool, and the Central American vibe really sets the whole style apart. And for me personally, adding a storyline to the city builder is a plus, it gives direction and meaning to the development, there is potential. I hope it will continue to be just as good, …

Who need to be told that the Aztecs were colonizers too The irony, of course, is that my game agrees with them... from a certain point of view (8/X)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who primarily plays city builders and strategy games, I’m used to a familiar gameplay loop: stabilize your economy, solve early bottlenecks, and then gradually scale while optimizing efficiency. In most titles, once the foundation is solid, the game shifts into a more relaxed, macro-focused experience. Aztecs does not follow that formula. This is the only city builder in my library where I consistently rely on the pause button. The game demands constant attention and active…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorry it's just not fun. The constricted map size could be interesting with the beacons to expand it but it plays more like a puzzle game. Trying to fit all the buildings into the space allotted. And the resources like wood and stone are destroyed if you build a house on them. So you try and get the woodcutter and stone masons to harvest those first with the "work area" tool but they don't follow it - they just harvest whatever is closest to their building. It's not really a city builder at all…

Is this game a masterpiece? No, certainly not yet. SimCity hasn’t held the monopoly on great city-building games for a long time. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea behind the game is cool. It is like frostpunk when it comes to penalties & decision scenarios. But it got so many bugs which makes it really hard to enjoy. Ressource management is not working at all, you build a solid city, have a good economy and then trust & grace (kind of a currency) are not working properly as buildings that should support you are not working (had 2x gardens level two and the trust bonus was not added, even though it was fully stacked). Due to this, the penalty…

neutral · AI labelView post →For me the most interesting thing is that in the game of “court ball” as played by the Aztecs (& others) to determine status and settle disputes, with the losing captain often ritually killed, the ball was played “with the hips & buttocks”, i.e. they played twerk-ball to the death
neutral · AI labelView post →Colorado State (2-4) has probably the worse defense in FBS right now (they fired their first DC mid-game), yet the game with San Diego State has a 62pt O/U, when the Aztecs (3-4) have averaged only 18.33 points per game on FBS opponents this season.
neutral · AI labelView post →Game had potential. Devs abandoned it almost immediately and left the product unfinished and unpolished. Do not recommend supporting the devs.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros - Aztecs is a good niche. I like history. Cons 1. Voices match western people, not Nahuatl people. 2. I can't zoom in too much. How should I zoom in to see the people better, like in Medieval and Sengoku Dynasty? 3. Why should I have to start building a blood zone from day 1? Why should I use so much blood and have such limited options to get more blood? How can I do bloodletting from day 1? I thought the easiest difficulty level was more forgiving? 4. The city layout needs…

neutral · AI labelView post →Houston seemed to have an answer for every Aztec run until the very end of the game. Aztecs seemed more composed in OT despite the youth. Great win, and something to build on.
neutral · AI labelView post →The overall premise of the game is solid: a fallen Aztec society, struggling to rebuild with oppressive outside forces holding you back. If that were actually the game, that'd be great, but the real game feels like: click the right buttons in the right order to win. Let me give a very simple example: the very beginning of the game tells you "evil is coming, we have to defend" but, as it turns out, you can just ignore that entirely and build as much as you want (really: as much as you can)…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We are completely OK people preferring different games, not every game is for everyone. But people claiming we were going to create Aztecs as born evil are lying, and they are lying with an agenda.
positive · AI labelView post →Not what I directly expected (classical builder) but I have enjoyed the first few hours directly. Can recommend the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: Now that I’ve spent more time playing, I can share a deeper impression of the game. One thing is certain—there’s never a dull moment in the game. Something is always happening: a villager falls ill, food supplies start running low, or the story throws an unexpected challenge your way. You constantly need to stay alert and adapt. The atmosphere is fantastic, just as I mentioned earlier, but what really elevates it is the soundtrack, which perfectly matches the mood, along with an…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game so much more. The mechanic of sacrificing citizens and captives in order to form your blood zone sounds super unique! But in practice you just get a influx of captives every few days from trade, and it becomes nothing more than a afterthought. There are only 2 nightly random events, making the day night cycle feel repetitive. Unless you know what city to rush with explorers you WILL lose. This first discovery is required to start your only source of slave income. The…

I find the core city-building gameplay to be pretty simple - the way the storehouse interacts with production buildings feels clunky. My personal preference is for this genre of games is more sand-boxy and less arcadey if that makes sense - the main challenge in this game is the limitations you are under and the things the game throws at you. Building roads feels silly when…
