Beyond a Steel Sky
Developer Revolution Software Ltd
Beyond a Steel Sky is a 2020 adventure video game developed and published by Revolution Software. Set ten years after the events of the 1994 video game Beneath a Steel Sky, players assume the role of Robert Foster as he finds himself returning to Union City on the hunt for a kidnapped child, only to learn that the city's new utopia state is not what it appears to be. The game's design utilized the Unreal Engine 4,… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,467 of 1,670 positive).
Players praise the game as a worthy sequel that respects the original while modernizing the experience. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the 3D graphics are a mixed bag, with cheap animations and a preference for 2D. [1][4][5] The puzzles are generally logical and satisfying, though a few require waiting or feel too easy. [6][4][7]

The game starts off strong: good music, a cool world, and the hacking mechanic is actually fun. I've really enjoyed the first few hours, but as I played more, the cracks started to show. I won't even go on the technical issues, like choices not being properly taken into account (e.g. you chose one badge, or one poem and it's another one being "used"). Or the few times your character acts like he has just learned an …

Don't fix it if it's not broken My favorite point&click adventure game is Broken Sword 2 and since this one comes from the same developers I had to play it and I wasn't dissapointed. Although I still can't comprehend why this studio is so set on making their games 3D when they obviously don't have the budget. Nothing wrong with 2D graphics get this into your heads developers. Cheap, poorly made 3D graphics made with …

I finished Beyond a Steel Sky entirely on Steam Deck, and it was one of the most memorable gaming experiences I’ve had in years. This game feels like a rare miracle: a true sequel that respects its roots while confidently modernizing everything around them. The cyberpunk world is beautifully realized, the writing is smart and thoughtful, and the puzzles strike that perfect balance where you feel clever when you …

This sequel to the classic Beneath a Steel Sky point-and-click adventure game is a loving homage to the original game and indeed to the era as a whole. And it's a very direct and loyal sequel, which is sure to appeal to long-time fans. Many of the wonderful characters are back—Hi, Joey!—and the game is crammed with callbacks and nostalgic detail. The writing and voice acting are all excellent, as should be expected …

A pleasant sequel to a neat little 90's game that for the most part manages to retain and reinvent the spirit. The transition to 3D is a bit of a mixed bag due to some effy animations here and there and the clear bias for a controller for movement, and while I so prefer Revolution's 2D artworks, they did overall a great job translating the art of Dave Gibbons into living people. The puzzle solving is something I had …

83% of the 179 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Beyond a Steel Sky. The complaint that keeps coming up: 3D graphics feel cheap and poorly animated. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Beyond a Steel Sky received "mixed or average" reviews, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. GameWatcher wrote that the game "has big shoes to fill [and] not only fills that shoe, but it knocks the definition of a modern adventure game out of the park. It does everything Telltale games do right, and corrects everything they do wrong." PC Invasion wrote that "Beyond a Steel Sky has some technical issues but its excellent writing and interesting storytelling make it well worth experiencing." Godisageek similarly wrote that "the humour and mystery are enough to carry Beyond A Steel Sky through, and if you did play the original and you do remember it, there's just enough…

On the other hand, this – and buying from a better company – is why I actively prefer GOG, even in cases when the price is higher. (But pssst, hey, [*Beyond a Steel Sky* is $3.50 on GOG right now](https://www.gog.com/en/game/beyond_a_steel_sky) compared to Steam's $35.) The fact I have to launch the Steam client to…

I probably shouldn't but it's the only gambling I do, so meh. I present you now, the leftover keys from my last couple pulls. I won't lie, I don't think most of these games are going to be top quality, but maybe there's something that looks a lot better to you than it does to me, or maybe you just need a distraction to get through Thanksgiving. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful game. Soundtrack is okay with some inspired moments. But the game is just so boring! It starts out fine, but it just falls flat. Any nostalgia is purely reliant on the fact that you probably don’t remember much of the first game, because there are a few glaring inconsistencies. But the scenery really is stunning and I almost would recommend it based solely on that. Almost.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, it's close to on par with the original game. The original I feel had a better story and atmosphere, but the puzzle logic in this game feels a whole let better. Puzzles were not that hard to solve once you find all the random hacking points that lead to the solution. No moon logic puzzles, everything makes great sense once you work it out. It's not very long as most adventure games are not, but it really felt like it could have been longer, like there could have been a whole…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beyond a Steel Sky is a 3D continuation of the 90's point&click cult classic "Beneath a Steel Sky (1994)." You don't have to play the first game, but it is highly recommended as a lot will fly over your head. Made by the same British studio Revolution Software who are best known for their "Broken Sword" series. Beyond a Steel Sky is not a indie game and won't receive the same indulgence. It was refreshing to play a point & click in 3D, not my cup of tea, but most of the time is spent on…

A great sci-fi adventure game, similar to the TellTale games. It's a mystery game involving robots, what's not to love?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somehow I bought this game years ago I only played it for 14 minutes. But last weekend I started it randomly, and couldn't stop playing. The science fiction world and the concepts introduced are very solid - way better designed than most sci-fi content we get these days. The art, the environmental design, the sounds and especially the voice acting are incredibly well executed! I felt really engaged with the game, and the entire setting was believable, the characters and dialogues were rich and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has a lot of issues, seems like it wasn't really playtested by anyone who likes the genre of the game it was supposedly a sequel for. It commits multiple deadly sins for point & click adventure games, e.g. you have to keep clicking on the same dialogue options over and over again to get the full text, and *sometimes* when you're done the text turns gray, sometimes it vanishes. The dialogue system is very unpredictable in general. Also you have items the game teaches you you can do…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The very delayed sequel of a minor adventure game of the 90s (back when Dave Cummins was at Revolution) has, weirdly, the same good and bad things as the original: a stellar beginning, a slump middle part and a rushed ending. All in all its problems are the same problems that most point n click adventure games have: not the puzzles, not the mazes, but the technological limitations that make everything feel so incredibly empty.

So I ask, in my writing, What is real? Because unceasingly we are bombarded with pseudo-realities manufactured by very sophisticated people using very sophisticated electronic mechanisms. I do not distrust their motives; I distrust their power. They have a lot of it. And it is an astonishing power: that of creating whole…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the original title some time in the 90's, having received it for free with my first sound card. Although it wasn't very revolutionary as an adventure game in any way, it had a very distinctive feel and atmosphere to it, which made it one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had. I was hoping this sequel could take me back there, but sadly it does fall a bit short. The game looks alright at first, but the more you play the more obvious the shortcomings get. The 3D comic…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An enjoyable adventure game. As a devotee of Beneath a Steel Sky, it gave me plenty of the nostalgic moments I was craving, while at the same time having a different aesthetic and storytelling approach. I loved every reference to the previous game, which I won't spoil here, but there are lots of them, and they're utilised well. Beyond a Steel Sky tells a rather ambitious story, and shows you far more of the new Union City than the original did of the old, and not just because of the jump to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An amusing game, worth playing. The hero is trying to solve a mystery in a mildly corrupt, slightly dysfunctional high tech socialist future. There is a sense of danger and risk, but very little violence. Believable motivations and reasonable puzzles. Context matters, some triggers only work when approached in the right sequence. Beyond the game plot, it is mildly reassuring to think that our future could be like this, rather than a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

neutral · AI labelView post →Full disclosure: this might be my least favorite genre. The narrative focused, dialogue heavy, point-and-click exploration game with lots of puzzles. Typically, I wouldn’t buy a game like this, but this came recommended from a trusted source. Taking the above into consideration, this was better than most. It’s very aesthetically pleasing. The cell shaded graphics are excellent. Voice acting, and sound design are very good. This is actually a sequel, but the world building is good enough that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like the original, you'll likely be very disappointed with this one. Gone are the variety of puzzles to work through, there is just ONE puzzle, and it's the same every time, swap OOP functions on everything you find that has a highlight interface. It is the very definition of "one note", it seems all the effort in developing this game was just about the visuals. The original is still a masterpiece in spite of its limited graphics, I don't think this one will be regarded as kindly in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some of the solutions are pretty arbitrary. The entire game is completely linear. There is not a single occasion where 2 different solutions, or 2 different orders of events, are allowed. It's like reading a book where the pages are scattered and you have to find the right order
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →story line starts interesting but execution is mediocre at best. puzzles start fun and tough but get increasingly lame and random. I think they spent all the budget on graphics. 2/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is okay and also really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ at the same time. The concept is great and also the scenery. But 1) the solving process is often not really logic. 2) there are many bugs in it and they are super annoying that the whole game is not proceeding and you are stuck in a like a cut scene. 3) and really again the "puzzles" are going sometimes to be that unsolvable or unlogic that it gets super annoying.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is gorgeous, very well written, with endearing characters who are voiced by a perfect cast of talented actors. Even thought it is really funny, and definitively cannot be accused of taking itself too seriously, it nonetheless manages to raise important questions about the nature of happiness and how good intentions can lead to desastrous behaviours. If you're into adventure game, definitively check this one out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was alright. Maybe I'm old, but i kinda wished this game wasn't in 3D like this. At least more like the traditional point n click would be nicer. The city was beautiful in its full glory in this modern graphics though. Was nice to revisit the story and the characters.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute pants-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ garbage. On top of that, the developer and steam have been dishonest in selling this game - it absolutely DOES NOT work on steam deck. Black screen for a solid minute, than booted out. Over and over and over and over again. Thankfully I got this on a deeply discounted bundle, so no real money made it's way to the developer from me. Which is good, because they don't deserve a single cent.

BUT, this game gets very interesting after you enter the UNION CITY and the ending is Very Good. 3. Although you will be spoiled, by playing this game with "director's commentary" on your 1st playthrough, it will be worth it, as it gives a lot of depth to the story and the characters and makes you immersed in the game. 4. This game's CORE game-play =…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Who would have thought we would ever get a sequel to Beneath A Steel Sky, Revolution Software’s much-loved 1994 adventure game? Frankly, I was sceptical. Following up a cult classic more than two decades later is no small feat, particularly one that helped establish the studio’s reputation before Broken Sword: The Shadow Of The Templars brought wider recognition. Comic book artist Dave Gibbons, best known for Watchmen, also returned to contribute to the art direction. So, with the original…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're a fan of adventure games this is great. Loved the art style, humor, writing, and voice acting. The hint system helps keep things moving when you get stuck for too long and might otherwise feel frustrated. And it plays very well on the steam deck right out of the box. Looking forward to replaying it with the commentary turned on. It's worth the full price, but at the current 80% off it's a steal.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, pretty choice. Sets a high bar for adventure game production quality. Very well realized for what it's going for.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This a a create adventure game. Almost all puzzles are logical and though not being too easy they are certainly not to hard. I used the built-in hint system 3 times (one time could have been avoided if I payed more attention how a certain tool should be used, the second was a hard to find hot-spot and the third time something that seemed illogical to me (a part of the fireworks puzzle). The city is beautiful and very detailed. The game is a good length too. Looking at steam I played it for 24…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a huge fan of the original having played it on release back in the day. I wasn't sure how I felt about the sequel upon seeing the 3D comic style graphics as opposed to the classic pixel art I was used to. I just got round to playing it now and I'm really enjoying the experience so far. Good puzzles and story telling has me engaged and wanting to play again. I read people complaining how linear the game feels, though this is basically like an old style point and click adventure game and…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now I'm normally not one to actually write reviews but I adore this game and its predecessor. I fell in love with Beneath a Steel Sky when I first played it and I knew I had to play the sequel once I finished it. Beyond a Steel Sky is a great sequel it goes and expands and add onto everything the original game. I truly cannot put into words how I much I love these two games and recommend playing them
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beyond a Steel Sky (BASS) is an interesting game with a VERY simple gameplay. The story start strong with a comic book estetic with a Sci-fi theme and a mystery all put together. It keeps the played both engaged and intrigued, but it starts showing its true colors after an hour or so of playing. Awkward animations in cutscenes, barelly any (if good) facial animations that consist well with the situation, no skip cutscene options and probably more that i didnt pay attention to as i later on…

If like me you don't have patience for 1994 point-and-click, it's perfectly fine to just go watch a full playthrough. Either way I definitely recommend experiencing the first game, as it definitely improves the experience with the second. And man, what an experience it was. The story in this game is simply great, condensed, emotional, maybe without strong plot twists or redefining the genre, but very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all this is a sequel to the game called Beneath a Steel Sky from 1994 which you can grab it for free right here on Steam. Also from my little googling around there was a remaster of it in 2009, but apparently that was only for iPod and iPhones. Hopefully the devs will give it some love and make a proper PC remake/remaster like they did with Broken Sword. Now, because I didn’t played that one I can’t really compare it, one thing is for sure, this one jumped to 3D, made in Unreal and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was okay... I think that sometimes the solutions were a bit too convoluted however that is coming from somebody who isn't a massive point and click person, so take that with a pinch of salt. Also I do feel like you need to play the original to truly understand what the hell is going on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good modernization of the old point-and-click game. It's not particularly challenging, but it's comparable to the original game--working your way through a new version of Union City to get to the bottom of things. I enjoyed it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a big fan of the original, this just sucks. It's ugly, the animation is janky, voice acting is bad, story is generic and uninspired, and there are errors in the design all over the place.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a yawn fest. Stilted yet fully-voiced walking simulator with some puzzle piece lite coding problems. Boring story, boring characters, boring puzzles, boring "gameplay". Must not have gotten play-tested by target audience before going into production. Complete failure when compared to the stellar 1994 point-and-click original.

A short list of what I came across 1 - I had a programming tag disappear (you do a kind of baby level programming in this game), so my holograms were gone. 2 - Two prompts are switched so clicking on the center object takes you to the left one and vice versa. 3 - After switching a few tags in the piazza the game had enough and didn't let me click on anything anymore. Needed to reload a previous game. 4 - After an NPC tried to walk through a door at the same…

But as a new player, I have to say I enjoyed the experience and would generally recommend it. It’s a fun, modern point-and-click adventure. While I found it fairly easy, I actually prefer that over puzzles that make no sense and force you to interact with every object on the screen until you randomly stumble on the “solution” that no reasonable person would call intuitive. The story…
