Many reviewers criticize the aggressive monetization, with teams and cosmetics locked behind paywalls. [1][2][3][4]

I like Blood Bowl. I've been playing Blood Bowl the board game since 1989, and I've played every computer version Cyanide has published. I took my time in trying Blood Bowl III because it uses the BB2020 ruleset and I'm not a fan of the rule changes, but that is not on Cyanide. I purchased the game when it was on sale, and I've played enough to try every play mode and accrue 50% of the achievements. I can say I got …

Ultimately, this game probably deserves its current Mixed review score, not for its changes compared to previous versions but for the rampant and aggressive monetization. Overall, however, I would recommend this game on sale, especially if you have any interest in the board game, or have experience with miniatures/warhammer that would put you in a position to better enjoy the board game. In terms of the actual game, …

Do you want to be gated out of half of the teams unless you want to pay $100, and then another $1000 to unlock all of the customization options for them? The monetization in this game is absolutely disgusting, save yourself the time and money and get 6 other games off of your Wishlist that aren't going to nickel and dime you over every inch of the game.

Worse than BB2 in every possible way. The people responsible for this disaster should be ashamed. They took a great game and ruined it with an awful user interface.

DO NOT BUY if you are not in Europe. Every action must synch with the servers in France before it happens AND they stupidly programmed the game (Netcode) so it can't handle long distance over the net. In the US, EVERY action waits 3-5 seconds before happening, even if it is single player/campaign mode. Every turn it steals/wastes 40-70 seconds, and you end up waiting/losing time on a clock that doesn't stop counting …

41% of the 221 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Blood Bowl 3. The complaint that keeps coming up: aggressive monetization with paywalled teams and cosmetics. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Blood Bowl 3 received "mixed or average reviews" according to review aggregator Metacritic, based on 25 reviews for Windows. OpenCritic determined that 31% of critics recommend the game. Robin Valentine writing for PC Gamer criticised the microtransactions within the game along with the numerous bugs that were present during the review period just before release. The UI was described as 'messy' and 'awkward' and he found the players hard to differentiate. He went on to predict the game would have a 'disastrous launch' due to it being 'fundamentally unfinished'. Timothy Linward at Wargamer praised the core game and also the graphics as an improvement on its predecessor but found it hard to…

60 of 294 · most liked firstIt is a decent port of the boardgame and the developer says it will get updated for the next edition. The cosmetic microtransaction issues are not as bad as they once were(and honestly I do not care much for cosmetics) and the game had been fixed/expanded here and there. I can recommend it if you are a fan of the boardgame and plan to play this version regularly or a new player planning to use it as a cheaper learning tool in order to try out the boardgame before investing into it. it is not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've had this game since day 1 and it was so bad at launch I said I'd wait out the bugs and hope for the best. Here we are, years later, and the game is disgusting. The business model alone ruins anything this game has going for it. Your classic greedy rotating store with in game currency but made worse by how hard it is to get said currency in game. Like, it costs 750 for a new team so you'd think, regardless of that imaginary amount, that it would take around 3-4 hours of play to reach…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Field Goal attempt in Blood Bowl! Never really played with kickers back in the day. Have been reading the rules for Field Goals in Blood Bowl - 3 points for a TD, 1 point for a FG. Will have to try it in a game some time. Anyone played those rules much? What did the game play like? #BloodBowl

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay itself is good, perhaps even the best out of the 3 games, personal bias on no visual representation of mutations aside. The reason why I can't recommend the game is the scummy business model of only being able to get new teams with in game currency that you get in packs so you always pay a bit more than what the team price is or via battlepass. Not to mention that it means no steam sale deals for them... All in all an ok game with a scummy business model.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will be repeating a lot of what other reviews have said. This is an effctive online port of the boardgame, and is updated to the more recent ruleset compared to Blood Bowl 2. There are many reasons to not buy this game. Most of the teams in the game arent available to play with the purchase, and require additional purchases, 7.50 usd plus tax. The game is very unstable, with lots of server side lag and crashes. There are some features not included that were included in Blood Bowl 2. These…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the game of Blood bowl, but Blood bowl 3 is just a cash grab. I hate the season passes, I wish it was closer to blood bowl 2. My mutations have no visuals and I want them to, I would buy all the teams but I would also need to buy all the visual gear and you don't make warpstones at a good rate, with or without the season passes. give us all the gear customizations and if you want to charge for teams go for it, you don't do both.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The entire Cyanide history of Blood Bowl has only ever served to make me loathe the company more. I've never seen a game drive me, time and time again, to install java for a now ancient 8 bit, 2d alternative. 3D bloodbowl could have been so good. Instead, they took my beloved tabletop game, wrapped half it in micro transactions and the other half in a soiled diaper of a gameplay UI then shoved it at the market. I'd say the Warhammer world deserves better, but charging for new editions is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I faced a player who was only interested in injuring/killing my team, that's fine as its a part of the game however.... Team injuries do carry over into future matches, so I conceded the game to save the team. I'm then strapped with a 720 hour online play ban for exiting to main menu, an option that is readily available with no warnings. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disgusting
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am immensely disappointed. I have spent countless hours in Blood Bowl 2, and I absolutely love that game. This one? Well, I'm not so sure. Pros: - Character Customization - Arena Customization that's it... Cons: - There is no solo league - Opponents always start at a higher TV if you are playing against AI - Multiple factions are behind paywalls - The UI is rubbish at best - The very character customization is locked behind a microtransaction paywall... All-in-all I am very disappointed…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing Blood Bowl 3 after BB2 is like getting a new paint job on your car. But instead of getting your car painted, they smear mud all over it and break your windshield.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 2nd game is still better. Especially if you want to play Eternal League.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Could be really cool, but their monetization system, and namely the fact that almost everything is locked behind a paywall (for a game you already bought) is insane. On top of nickel and diming you for literally everything, which is bad enough, they double down on it by making cosmetics you purchase a once time item. Meaning... of i buy a new head for linemen for example, I can apply it to exactly ONE lineman. Want to give another lineman a helmet like that? Buy it AGAIN. Nope, no way. Refund…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow, the negative reviews of this game were not kidding. Awful UI, awful tournament behavior, and the queue times are so long you'll just get matched up with whatever 140k team happens to be online at that moment. And gosh, even after nerfs, this game is way too predatory, especially for a game that you have to pay up-front for. For reference, teams can be bought in the shop for 750 warpstone. You get 10 warpstone for free every 2 days. That is way too much of a commitment for a game that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately refunding, the game is insane in it's MTX greed for being a PAID GAME; the MTX currency is very grindy to earn with teams costing 750, with premium bundles giving just short or just more than you need. The game of course has a shop were you could also buy star players, cosmetics, arenas and more. The game also has a battlepass which is both paid and free with both being pretty bad. This battlepass system does technically give the new team for free if you reach the last tier of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game of Blood Bowl is good, but the developers made the video game version really really bad. It's crazy. User Interface errors occurring even after years of release, player and grass grafics never quite seeming to fit together, not even touch downs registering on time with the sounds...arg. And then it is filled with silly micro transactions. Somehow this was a huge step down from Blood Bowl 2. Very disappointing. :( But your are kind of stuck with this if you want to play the new rules,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have so many hours in this game. I have played Fumbbl and tabletop. I have never experienced the uneven dice rolls as I have in Blood Bowl 3. Even if I roll bad in Fumbbl or Tabletop I have the ability to talk to someone about the unfortunate dice roll and have human empathy. BB3 is a void less game with no heart or community. I personally hope this game gets sold to a company that makes this game enjoyable. Not being able to get the rules to 2025 KNOWING ahead of time that the change is…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game need a lot of work still and man they are STINGY... either get halfway through the battle pass to get 50 gem stones or once a week you get 10, you need 750 to get 1 new base team. Ill stay it a different way, you cannot play any added team without playing or playing 100 hours. I have 42 hours in and im only half way to getting a new team. other then that AI still sucks, ive had them run in and out taking the dumbest route an end up just killing themselves. Ive never lost a match or even…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The previous game devs hated their work and audience, and I have no idea if people who play BB are on the whole suffering from a cuckoldry problem or that they are so starved for decent BB content that they force themselves to like this game. The assets used in this game are all the same ones from BB1 chaos edition and BB2. Literally. I am baffled. How scummy and lazy can you be? The amount of creativity this game lends you with any possible ideas for animations, customisation, management,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blood Bowl 3 could’ve done a great upgrade compared to Blood Bowl 2, but it’s really a mixed bag to me. I played both games only in single player modes, so my comparison only valid to that type of experience. First start with the positives. Graphic is somewhat nicer. The UI is straight up another level. You can basically set up the shown information or visuals in several categories as you want them. Do you want really unique colors to see the players better on the field or do you roll with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a full priced "freemium" mobile game with all its staples. Implementing this much freemium system in a paid game is unacceptable. Funny thing is, they are so incompetent that they suck at selling you those microtransactions with unintuitive and poorly thought UI. First of all, there are fairly large amount of customizations for each player type, but almost all those parts require in game purchase (75 crystals (about 0.9USD) to 250 crystals (about 3USD) each) with some given out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blood Bowl 3: Unavoidable Trash A turn-based 1x1 PvP fantasy football. Not my typical game, but balanced, bug-free with affordable optional DLC. Totally worth playing and paying, it will always have a place in my heart. That’s Blood Bowl 2. Oh, Blood Bowl 3? Total crap. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. In my opinion, there was no need for the next game. BB2 was fine, and everything new we have in BB3 could be implemented in the second game, but GW wants us to buy all the teams again,…

I'm 80% sure that AndyDavo and cKnoor are being paid by Nacon and Cyanide studios to defend and say nice things about this game despite the obvious lack of effort from the developers. Even now this game still feels…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is by far one of the worst examples of modern video games. The devs are continuously pumping out new features and game modes to a rapidly decreasing player base. Queue times are through the roof and there's so few players they cannot even fill out a top 10 for the leaderboard for the previous season of gameplay. The UI features bugs which have persisted since the launch while the ui has only gotten more and more clunky and unwieldly. Do not even consider this game. I have been…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An aboslute negative, do-not-buy recommendation from me sadly. Unfortunately BB3 is almost unplayable for me, being in regional Australia. The need to poll the servers for every single dice roll (server validaition for weekly quests, blood pass progress etc) causes significant lag while not pausing the game timer. Resulting in not having enough time per turn to do much at all. This is an absolute failure and the option to log out of these server validation checks and rewards should be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The UI in this game is attrocious. Unintuitive, clunky, and very frustrating. I've played older Blood Bowls before, and this is an unbelieveable downgrade UI-wise.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get BB2 Legendary Edition instead of this. Sure, that one's based on older ruleset but all the teams are there from the start, there's no hidden in-game purchase (this one uses the Ubisoft model of buying unlock tokens for real money). This one looks a bit better but that's it. The UI, the on-screen information and the overall atmosphere was done better in BB2.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, I regret buying. I tried to refund but was just outside the return window... So I'm still trying to find a way to enjoy it going against friends and online. BUT HEED THIS WARNING!!! IF YOU WANT TO SOLELY PLAY AGAINST AI DO ** NOT** BUY THIS GAME. When the game first came out the AI was incredibly stupid. But now they are unbeatable and this is because of the very unrealistic RNG. The Dice rolls are so absolutely loaded and unrealistic. I failed a 99% check 3 times in one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The others are right. Very bad UI, online issues, and the game feels less juicy and gritty than BB2, despite better graphics. They say Slytherine will save the day, I'll change my review to positive when they do it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like Blood Bowl you'll like this game. It's come a long way since the launch and is now completely playable. The UI can take a little getting use to as a complete beginner and PvP is where this game excels with the usual on pitch fun. Awaiting BB3 morphing into Warhammer Blood Blood for the updated ruleset to be incorporated.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bad in oceana region. 5 games in a row I've been in the lead after finishing my last turn only for the game to "lose connection" resulting in a loss for me. Why this only seems to happen on the very last turn I don't know. Feed up with it, will never buy another title from this developer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Half cooked perma online no save function user unfriendly joke of a game. Need to have a life mid match, nope, you just forfeited. Internet issue comes up? You just forfeited again. All the AI complaints from other reviers are fair, but how do you make a game so incredibly user unfriendly?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why on earth cant you play a league with AI???????
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Server Lag for this game is utterly horrendous. *even when you're not playing multiplayer* Every tiny little action needs server validation apparently, and the lag is insufferably bad, to the point the game becomes unplayable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This must be the most lazy form of development. I've played Blood Bowl 2 a lot. And this game hasn't improved at all in comparison to the second game. Next to that: The same models, the same arena's, the same annoying voice lines of the commentators (they're on repeat all the time)... The fact that I paid money for this game, while I already have Blood Bowl 2 (which is practicly the same game), is making me angry... Calling it 'lazy development' is a compliment.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well that's not good for Blood Bowl 3 players. Nacon owns Cyanide who are the devs of the game.
neutral · AI labelView post →I would sell my soul to nuffle for a free version of Blood Bowl 2: Legendary Edition. I would trade my soul with one from tzeench's stock for the ability to turn back time and be able to play that game (lively) on open ladder, again, like it's Covid/preCovid times. I would crowdsurf all night long with Khorne and give out as many copies of that game (this game's predecessor) as humanely possible, and as long as my resolve holds and my feet keep me standing. I would wipe my ass with this product…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Blood Bowl on tabletop, but the way this game is barely functional years after release, how scummy its business model is, and the absolutely awful UI make it just the bare minimum one can call a "game". The worst thing is, they showed with Bloodbowl 2 that it could be better, but they are both incompetent and greedy enough that the game is in the state that it will probably be forever. It's a shame. Blood Bowl deserves better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not only is this game a cash grab, I showed them undeniable proof that I didn't receive a faction I bought and they told me "you have to refund it" when there was no option too several times and i eventually gave up because the tech support is just abyssmal
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh, how I was hoodwinked! As an old school reader of White Dwarf and collector of Citadel figurines from the 80s, who carefully backed away in the early 90s as my wallet began to suffer, I should have known not to take Games Workshop at their word, but I succumbed during the recent sale and thought I'd give this a try. I played the original board game at the time for a while and enjoyed it. I did not enjoy this at all. First impressions seemed promising. I enjoyed the cut scene. Then came the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a player of the board game for over 30 years and a recent convert to the latest season 3 of the board game I though this would be right up my street. While gameplay does mirror the board game (which I greatly appreciate), the solo player mode is a huge let down. The AI teams cause serious injuries at a rate which is statistically impossible based on true random dice roles which means it is impossible to build a team up over a series of games. The player Vs player is ok, but in this case the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got this almost 3 years after release and on sale. Almost entirely singler player matches. Still can't recommend this game. The lack of or zero customization of your players is garbage and embodies the money grabbing of GW/devs. The game plays ok but has some gameplay issues (just seems like they didn't care and still haven't fixed) like the top of the screen has team 1 logo on left, team 1 score on left, teams 2 turn counter of left (wtf??) and opposite for right side. The AI is still not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can only recommend this game to players who LOVE Blood Bowl. For anyone else it's really not worth it. Monetization sucks, UI and gameplay is very old fashioned and annoying to get into.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Performance, UI, and overall game issues everywhere and the way consmetics, team unlocks and microtransactions have been handled is horrible. Also bare minimum single player content. Just play BB2 until it gets fixed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They really need to put some work into the single player experience or just cut it. It is copy>pasted from the multiplayer experience + the worst AI you've ever seen in a tactics game. Forget about losing a match, they will never even score on you. Besides the garbage AI, the game is bogged down with so many multiplayer features that just don't need to exist. For example, in a league where each team picks 2 star players before each match. I forgot to select mine, games starts. I get no star…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have over 200 hours of play time in older versions of Blood Bowl, and even owned the physical game at one point. I love the tabletop ruleset. But this implementation is no good. I struggled with the menus, fumbled my way into a tutorial, blundered through the bizarre in game UI. Gave up on trying to play with the tutorial and decided to jump into a single-player vs AI friendly match with pre-made teams just to get a feel for the engine and implementation. Everything felt stuttery and clunky.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still a disappointment years after release. Pros: It's Blood Bowl The graphics are fine. Not great, but they are fine. Cons: Rough, unintuitive UI. Super Buggy. I have had to concede a couple games because some element off the UI just stops working. Horrible Connectivity problems. Unnecessary online-only features which compounds connectivity problems. There is an offline mode, but the AI is abysmal. I have seen it attempt a series of stupid, unlikely dodges to hand off the ball, succeed, only…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So this game at launch... was rough but I would say its finally in a better spot than BB2 it is also going to be freely upgraded to WARHAMMER BLOODBOWL and its going to become a living IP game like hearthstone / Magic Arena, keeping everything 1 to 1 with the tabetop rules. Also Singleplayer eternal leagues were finally added this year (i think it was this year) so if you hate MP but love BB you can still find a lot of fun here. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Came to this from Blood Bowl 2, hoping for better visuals and updated rules, but unfortunately, that's not what I found. I found the main menu UI confusing and not intuitive to use. I did quite like the visual style though. In game, the graphics look a bit odd - too HD somehow with maybe with too high contrast? It gave me slight 90's vibes, and made it all look a bit in-cohesive. The in game UI (action radial menu in particular) is bizarrely VERY hard to read. And i felt I was having to make…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is extremely financially exploitative, has unusable interface. It is very manipulative, none of the dice rolls are random, (for your reference Cyanide/Slitherine or whoever m*r*n made this game, the expected wait time for a run of four 1 dice rolls on a d6 is 1,554 rolls) but in this game all IMPORTANT rolls are 100% catastrophic, 4x1 sequences and whatnot, it is very much unplayable, even within the pitiful non customizable locally hosted Ai league, or friends, thanks for ruining my…
