What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 250 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (22,679 of 28,000 positive).
Players praise the game's addictive looter-shooter gameplay and classic Borderlands atmosphere. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note that the Enhanced version suffers from memory leaks and technical issues. [4][5][6] Some players recommend the original version over this remaster due to persistent bugs. [6][7][8]

Has a memory leak that doesn't exist in the original game and that they never bothered fixing. Also removed the original, which still runs fine on modern systems, from sale forcing players to pay a premium for this broken version. But hey, it has a silly hat for each of the original vault hunters... At least it includes the original game, so if you buy this just play that.

Has a memory leak or something as the FPS gets worse the longer you play. It took about 30 minutes to get to 20 FPS. Game itself is great though. Stick with the original version or try to fix the memory leak yourself since Gearbox can't be bothered. Downloading DXVK and placing the "d3d11.dll" and "dxgi.dll" files in the same folder as the game's executable seems to have fixed it for me.

Borderlands is messy, loud, and imperfect—and that’s exactly why it works. This is the Borderlands before the franchise leaned too hard into its own punchlines. The tone is rougher, lonelier, almost post-apocalyptic in a way later entries soften. The guns don’t just rain from the sky yet you earn them. The pacing is slower, the humor drier, and the world feels genuinely hostile instead of wacky by default. The art …

Borderlands GOTY Enhanced is the definition of showing up late to the party but still having a good time. The cel shaded looter shooter that started it all holds up surprisingly well, especially with a friend in tow. The story is basically just an excuse to shoot things and collect guns, which, honestly, fair enough. Gunplay is addictive and the loot dopamine hits just right. Lilith main, no regrets. It does show …

60 of 337 · most liked firstI launched the game to check my saves (which already took 3 attempts by the way because this rerelease is one of the buggiest i've ever played) and they added two borderlands 4 ads to the main page. if you add ads to your game post launch and never fix the bugs present since the launch of the game i hope bad things happen to you.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Take-Two Terms of Service Update on February 28, 2025 - Applies to all Borderlands games, yes, even the 13+ year old games that we've all been playing without issue. Unilaterally adding a new Terms of Service to a 13 year old game that makes the use of mods a bannable offense and makes it so that they can ban you for sharing bugs or exploits. While I doubt they will use this power they bestowed upon themselves against anyone in BL2 it will certainly be in use for BL4. Randy called people who…

Game crashes before the first cinematic ends. Same spot, every single time. Even if i fix it, it wont be gearbox achievement, so negative review is the only one it deserves. Doesnt matter how much better than original game it is, it just doesnt work. I have 25 hours in the game, i dont remember playing it, but i assume that it was when the game just came out, and i had…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic game but runs like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ due to memory leak. Also, you cannot launch the game from steam. Instead you have to go into the game files and run the launcher as administrator. This version of the game has been out for seven years, WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN FIXED!!!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What if the game was called "Sexlands" and we could have sex with the monsters and bandits
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has major performance issues. I love the franchise but these games need to to be optimised.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only reason to buy this is to get access to the original Goty edition. The "enhancements" in this release are incredibly minor and often detrimental. This thing is just embarrassing. The launcher doesn't work so you have to delete the launcher exe and rename the game exe to launcher.exe, the symbol for a blank space in unicode is missing so every text line has boxes in it, and the performance is somehow worse than the original because of a serious memory leak problem. If you really want…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This Enhanced version reminds me of my irritable bowel syndrome. Crappy. The memory leaks are lame, trying to start the game sucks. etc, just play the other Borderlands GOTY. Not this Enhanced dump
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Folks, Borderlands: Game of the Year Enhanced is a tremendous game. Tremendous. Maybe one of the greatest looter-shooters ever made, people are saying it. You go to Pandora, total disaster, horrible planet, absolutely no leadership, psychos everywhere, monsters everywhere, and somehow it’s fantastic. And the guns, nobody has guns like Borderlands. Millions of guns. Beautiful guns. Fire guns, electric guns, exploding guns. Other games give you twelve guns. Very sad. Borderlands gives you…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been two years since this game re-released, and they still haven't fixed the bug that bricks your keyboard input randomly for 5-10 seconds. Randy Pitchford you are a clown.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ "remaster" of an overall great game. I kinda regret not just coming back to the original version, but I'm too deep in my playthrough now.. Let me list all the issues I've experienced: Audio in cutscenes sounds like it's bouncing around in a very windy tunnel. (there is a patch for this) The game thinks I have surround sound, so any sound that's happening outside of a 70 degree cone in front of me is extremely muffled. (haven't been able to fix this one) Memory leak I think?…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has become my favorite game to play lately! It is time to give a comprehensive review Borderlands Game of the Year Enhanced is a fantastic reminder of why this series became a cornerstone of the looter-shooter genre. While I wasn't there to play the original when it first came out, I have heard from others that the remastered visuals and improved performance of this version give it a fresh coat of paint without compromising the charm and grit that defined the original. I played from…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bl1 is still fantastic but this remaster has a metric ton of issues and performance problems on a machine that runs Bl3 like butter. Stick will the og GOTY version and give the 'Enhanced' version a miss.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice fullscreen ads in the main menu, thanks. Also unresolved bugs, even in this "enhanced" edition. Mouse sensitivity is crazy high even when dropped to the lowest values, have to resort to editing a .ini file to fix it. Texture filturing resets to the default setting on each game launch, even though it says trilinear it will not be doing that in practice.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can definitely respect what Borderlands did for the looter-shooter genre, and I understand why people loved it when it first came out. But playing it today for the first time was a rough experience. The atmosphere and art style are still great, but almost everything else feels dated. The gunplay lacks impact, many missions are repetitive, enemies are bullet sponges, and there’s a lot of running back and forth. Even with the Enhanced Edition’s visual improvements, the gameplay itself hasn’t…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →OK. I love this game for a few reasons. First off... the humour is continuous througout the game which I find lacking in the second and third installments personally. Second, the gameplay itself is very excellent. The DLC's are great and fun to play. I have played this game over and over and never have gotten bored, always new weapons to find. Overall.. excellent game, fun to play!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This recommendation would largely mimic my review that I originally made of the original game over a decade and a half ago. It is still fun to come back to the original game in 2026. In fact, I'm doing so with a party of three as of this week. You don't have to spend ten times the amount to get a core Borderlands experience. This does the job more than fine, despite its age. Granted, it does have its fair share of jank with this release (online needing some CFG file tampering with other…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →one of the best looter shooters ever made. claptrap is still annoying, skags still want me dead, and I still spend 90% of my time comparing guns I'll replace in five minutes. 100%'d it on console a few yeas back, but i won't be doing it again on pc. the colosseum DLC is not FUN.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the original version on console way back in 2009 and generally enjoyed the gameplay loop and mechanics, but I had some gripes with how inventory management and upgrades were handled. The GOTY edition was recently gifted to me so I thought I'd give the game another go for nostalgia sake. Despite a handful of bug fixes from the original release, I was disappointed to find that nearly half the inventory upgrades are STILL reliant on RNG. The storage upgrade quests in the General Knox DLC…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The visual style is still unique and charming, but the Enhanced version’s optimization issues, those painful no-death coliseum runs, the absurd Claptrap collectibles, and the lack of proper solo vs co-op balancing really show the game’s age. And yeah, the plot being fairly generic doesn't help with the case.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend anything Randy Pitchford has slapped his impotent ♥♥♥♥ on, but there's still a memory leak in this "ENHANCED" edition years later. That's crazy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing looter shooter with a few blemishes There are two parts to this review, the base game and then the DLCs. First, the base game is peak, with almost perfect looter shooter mechanics, amazing drops even early on, good weapon feedback, and a pretty good art style that holds up even today. Only negatives are nitpicking, like maybe some difficulty spikes and the story/mission structure (could be more creative), but overall it's an amazing journey, but then we come to the DLCs. DLCs…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is great, the people at gearbox are hot garbage. They support communist and hate the American people,
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This has undoubtably got to be the most broken re-release of a game OF ALL TIME. The game is riddled with bugs that make the game unplayable at times, and performance issues that a 17 year old game should not be causing on new medium-high end pcs. At the very least Borderlands 1 at a core has a somewhat servicable story (albeit very mid compared to bl2 and presequal) and the gun play and difficulty can make it a fun challenge and its enjoyable with friends, but id steer clear of this remaster…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is Borderlands, but with a fresh coat of paint and the same bad decisions. Borderlands GOTY Enhanced takes the original chaos and smooths it out just enough to remind you why this series works. The guns still feel ridiculous, the desert is still empty, and you’re still opening chests hoping this one finally respects you. It looks better, runs better, and adds some quality-of-life changes, but it’s still very much old-school Borderlands. Expect lots of driving, lots of shooting, and lots…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You should all know that buying this version also adds the non-enhanced version of the game to your library. Visible right in front of you in the 6 items included with the purchase. The chief complaint for 99% of the negative reviews is the Enhanced edition memory leak. There are multiple fixes for this. If you are even semi proficient at using a computer, have ever installed a mod, you can fix this in seconds. I have a good PC and run the game on an SSD which for most people is apparently…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3+ years later, still broken. Completely unplayable for the majority of people.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has the most awful memory leak of any game I've ever played. The first 15 mins are great but after that your framerate will get worse and worse and you'll have to restart the game or play at 20 FPS. Wouldn't recommend as it'll never get fixed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THIS WAS NEVER UPDATED TO BE PLAYABLE Before you even consider buying this, please keep in mind Gearbox only made this version as a promotional thing to lead into Borderlands 3, once that was released this never got anymore support and has MANY problems thanks to that, the most major being the memory leak issue. I wish I had known this before purchase as now my only goal is to play it with my friend group then move on. I would have loved to keep this and return to it, maybe get a maxed out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought they could have done a much better job updating the game to a much newer engine if they are going to charge people for it. No new content on offer, nothing. Don't waste your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally beat this game on xbox 360 when it came out with my cousin. Absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hell, but enjoyed it all. Enjoyed it even more this time around, minus some parts. But that's fine. Still an amazing entry in the series, though a little more on the slow side in my opinion, and less super duper story focused. You're literally in the start of the future protagonist's story, right when it starts, right as they step off that bus.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably the most underrated borderlands game. Which is a shame, the game is pretty fun as looter shooters go. Dare I say, it has better looking guns than 2/pre-sequel. It also somehow still has the best atmosphere and headshots in the series. It may not have actually won goty, but it will always be one in my heart. 9/10, -1 point for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ remaster. get your ♥♥♥♥ together, randy bobandy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After many years, I'm replaying this game with the enhanced edition, and I gotta say: IT STILL ROCKS! Great visual quality and performance, and of course, ton of fun that Borderlands games always offer. The only issue, some maps transitions will always crash the game while playng multiplayer, so to fix this you have to enter the faulty map while playing solo and then, once inside, invite your friend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Borderlands 1 was an incredible game when it first came out. It offered a delightful change from the monotonous and repetitive games of its time. The addition of cartoony graphics to the realistic Mad Max-esque atmosphere created a truly captivating atmosphere. Andalso the lore details they presented throughout the game created a unique atmosphere. With each new game, new mechanics and features were introduced to the Borderlands series. Because Borderlands 1 lacked none of these, we play it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ITS A PRETTY AGED GAME! but not in a bad way , si if you wana start borderlands series with the story go for this one but if for more modern experience borderlands 3 would be the best option
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Borderlands lays the foundation for one of the greatest looter-shooter series of all time. Despite showing its age, the iconic art style, charming humour, and satisfying gunplay still make Pandora worth experiencing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The series that started it all. I remember playing this in my childhood and it didn't disappoint replaying it. Everything about this game is great. No negative things to say about it besides Mad Moxxi's DLC because that Thunderdome is so time-consuming to get all the achievements. Besides that, I highly recommend this game solo or with friends. 8.5/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know this review is far from original but having a game that you have to fidget around in the files and settings just to get it work is annoying as hell. I like the borderlands series and think most of the games are good, but to have a remake this poorly optimized is taking the piss. I've solved the lag issue now I'm dealing with the screen tear every time I move the cursor a little too fast, it's just not worth all the messing about to get it working.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all I am a Borderlands fan. Sure this game has problems and by todays standard people might find it lacking but this is what started the series we know and love. I played this game to see where it all started and it was truly worth the hassle. Do yourself a favor and explore this absolute gem
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THIS IS NOT A REVIEW OF THE GAME ITSELF!! This version of borderlands 1 DOES have quality of life changes that make it preferable, but needs to be fixed. The game just outright refuses to start without tinkering, and it's not just something I had to solve for myself, literal multiple people had this issue, where you need to outright delete the launcher and rename the game to "Launcher.exe" just to trick the game to even start. That's also ignoring the notorious memory leak issue that makes the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →best borderlands game of all time. one of the best games ever, really.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION! Here's why: It offers incentive with loot but gives you less, It offers challenge and then scales it beyond playability, it offers enhanced graphics which don't work and ♥♥♥♥ your fps, this is the worst version of BL1 and I've played this on ALL platforms. I don't know how you did it Randy but you made a perfect game worse.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has some bugs of course, but ultimately, love these games and love this story. Glad to be able to play it on PC now
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a person who 100% completed this game, i can confidently say that even tho it has very poor gun play and traversal mechanic, it is a very good co-op experience, the achievements are way less tedious than in borderlands 2 and pre sequel but the arena achievements are very very frustrating.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Revisiting Borderlands is an interesting experience. On one hand, it’s the foundation for a wildly successful series. On the other, it very much feels like a prototype—one with charm, but also a long list of technical quirks and design frustrations that are hard to ignore today. Technical & Performance Issues There’s a memory leak issue where playing for a few hours leads to heavy frame drops. Restarting the game fixes it, but it’s annoying and absolutely shouldn’t be necessary. The game also…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Borderlands is a fascinating blend of style and gameplay. For a game that helped define the looter-shooter genre, the original Borderlands still holds up remarkably well. Its simple yet unique story, distinct characters, and the harsh but charming world of Pandora make it stand out. The mix of gloomy, desolate environments with a comic-book aesthetic gives it a personality that’s hard to forget, and its humor—sometimes dark, sometimes silly—adds a lot of charm. I will say the game’s weakest…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Borderlands deserves praise for being the Grandfather of the looter shooter genre and it's really fun as a co-op shooter but it's been surpassed by other entries in the franchise and other games in the genre since. The story here is pretty weak and just acts as a way to get you to move from location to location shooting things. The ending is pretty anticlimactic but it's core gameplay is still fun enough to justify playing through with a buddy.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yes. You should play this game. That is, with a few specific exceptions: If you have an aversion to early 2000’s jank. Achievement hunters who want to enjoy their entire achievement journey. If you want to skip the rough first season and skip to the good stuff. Borderlands is an absolutely *perfect* game for 2009; in 2026…it’s still good and worth a run for the adventure, but your time is better wasted in one of its far superior successors. ESPECIALLY Borderlands 2. CORE CHARACTERISTICS…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has aged like milk. I'm hours in and I'm yet to find a gun that I like. Enemies are bullet spongey. There's clear issues with hit boxes with headshots not registering and rocket launchers doing 0 damage on a direct hit. The early game requires you to grind boring fetch quests in order to maintain an appropriate level. The landscape and environment is endlessly bland. The driving is some of the worst I've ever seen in a video game. The characters don't interest me in the slightest.…
