Some players find the job system deep and rewarding, allowing for creative builds. [1][2][3] Others criticize the story as generic and forgettable, with poor voice acting. [4][5][6] Several reviewers note the game is grind-heavy and has frustrating boss mechanics. [7][8][9]

(For context, I've played BD1 and this game both on the "Hard" difficulty) I very badly wanted to love this game. Bravely Default 1 is one of my favorite JRPGs ever, with a surprisingly great story and DEFINITELY the best JRPG combat I've ever seen. I never beat it as a teenager, but playing through the full game on Hard as an adult and witnessing the perfect execution of a hard-as-hell JRPG was a really wonderful …

I've never written a review for any game before, but I have a lot to say about this one... As a massive fan of bravely default 1 (and i guess bravely second...) i WISH i could like this game so much. All the bare-bones basic formulas and game-play are definitely THERE, but it just feels so empty and devoid of life compared to the first two. My favourite non-game-play parts about those OG games were the story and the …

This game has a worse reputation than its predecessors, but from playing it, I disagree with that sentiment. At 10+ hours in and being an RPG fan who enjoys turn-based combat, I'm having a great time. The game's combat system and difficulty are better thought-out and more balanced than the previous games. You can't use the same tactics for every fight. Spamming strong moves sets you up for enemy counters, and even …

Although this game has faced harsh criticism for its abysmal voice acting, I believe there are some positive aspects you should know about. The storyline is fairly average and feels quite linear—and at times a bit tedious—but a major plus is that you can experience every possible outcome, from the "bad endings" all the way to the "true ending." The difficulty level offers a decent challenge. While there are many …

69% of the 175 Steam reviewers we collected recommend BRAVELY DEFAULT II. The complaint that keeps coming up: weak and forgettable story. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received generally positive reviews upon release. IGN's Seth Macy commended the game for continuing the battle and Job systems from the previous titles, its customization and strategy, and its tough but rewarding boss battles. However, he expressed disappointment in the sidequests and dungeon designs. Game Informer's Daniel Tack expressed similar praise for the battle and Job systems and found the experience fulfilling overall, but formulaic to the point of being dull at points. RPGamer's Anna Marie Privitere singled out the lack of a quest log and the imbalance of some Job classes as negatives, but overall concluded that Bravely Default II was her favorite game in the series thus…

The job system was a ton of fun to play around with, you could make some really broken builds by combining certain jobs and abilities 🤣 the dungeons were fun to explore too! Hopefully there's a Bravely Default III soon!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m now 90+ hours into Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster & it’s still been a blast. The last job I got shocked me NGL. So far imo this one has better jobs than Bravely Default II. I got the airship in chapter 4 & we all know in a JRPG that’s a game changer so I can go wherever I want/explore.
neutral · AI labelView post →We focus too much on the silly Kingdom Hearts titles and not enough on the sequel to Bravely Default, Bravely Second, not to be confused with Bravely Default II ...which is the third Bravely Default game.
neutral · AI labelView post →A bunch of boss fights are basically "beat them using this method, AND THIS METHOD ONLY!". If you didn't build your characters\jobs for that method, then off you go for hours to prep for the one boss fight. Rinse and repeat for a bunch of bosses. Becomes a real slog towards the end-game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game and a decent buy on sale If you wondering about buying this game. Ask yourself these 3 questions. Do I like grinding out battles to level up my character/classes? Do I like challenging bosses? Do I like a battle system that is not perfect but allows me to do what I want? If you answered no, to any of these questions. Walk away, this game was not meant for you. It is a fun game if you like any of these aspects but mostly the first question. You will be grinding out a lot of levels…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Things were going good, but the amount of tedious busywork got to be too much. One quest had you go between two people, one in a town, and the other in a dungeon four times. For no reason. "I need a drink > Go back to wife > Go back to husband > I need a fork > Go back to wife > Go back to husband, etc." The breaking point came at the end of chapter one. To get to the next zone to go to a bridge. Then immediately get sent right back to where you came from! No changes to the town at all.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hated it. Played the BD1 and BS on 3ds and thought they were great. Compared to those two game 3ds games, this feels like a second rate mobile game. Combine that with ugly art, boring story, bland dialogue, lame characters, not many jobs, dumb fetch quest, no soul, game by the numbers makes this game a big fat MEH for me. And i really wanted to like this game :/. Let's hope the next BD game is more like the 3ds games :/
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the king of frustration and farming. 4 points : difficulty, dungeons, XP, side quests. Every things else is ok - good - classic (graphics, gameplay, story, music..., it's fine). I would give it a thumbs up if not for these frustrating parts. Difficulty and XP : Started on Hard, dropped down to Easy (booh...), played with a tank, a mage, a healer and a DPS. Difficulty reduce the XP you earn and up the stats of enemies. I kill everything on sight so XP should normally not be a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let's be blunt: I spent a good chunk of time with Bravely Default 2, and honestly? I wouldn't recommend it. While it has its moments, they're often overshadowed by poor design choices and a general lack of engagement. One of two highlights this game has is the pleasant visuals. In cities. And pretty much only there. The world outside is already pretty bland. But the characters are even worse, the 4 protagonists rarely look even decent. With most jobs, especially the first ones, they are…

This game is made by Square Enix too, so i was expecting a similar gameplay experience like Octopath. And guys, I have finished the game with all the different endings and i have loved this game. I have skipped all the secondary quests. Too boring to take action on those. But the main questline and the job system (similar to Octopath 2) are more than enough to making this one of my favourite turn based…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bravely default, as a series, is named around its 2 main mechanics that manipulate the flow of battles and how turns are taken : default grands you extra resources and bravely expands them to affect turns. unfortunately for the team, they should've called this game Counter Counter because to balance the fact that you could somewhat easily exploit the mechanics in the previous entries, they decided that just about everything should have a counter in this game. this ranges from basic archers…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I write this review fresh out of my first full playthrough of BD2. I have played both Flying Fairy and Bravely Second around when they came out. THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS FOR CONCEPTS THAT THE BRAVELY DEFAULT SERIES REUSES IN ITS STORY AND MECHANICS! Bravely Default, back when it came out, stood out on two points: Innovative combat mechanics, as well as a story that is unconvential to JRPGs. My expectation after Flying Fairy and Bravely Second was that both the combat and the unconventional,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bravely Default II is not a direct sequel to the original game for anyone wondering. It follows more the Final Fantasy approach of sequels being disconnected from one another, and in my opinion that is the best way to play this game: its own take on the formula, rather than a follow-up of the original. To start, the story is a pretty bog-standard find the four crystals and save the world scenario, but with just enough small twists and nice moments for it to be enjoyable. The problems mostly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is probably a 6.5/7 out of 10. The story is a typical JRPG and weaker than the others in this series. The job system on the other hand is the reason I kept playing. The fun part for me was figuring out what was broken without looking anything up. I did manage to find some very broken builds but the amazing thing was after I beat it I did go look some stuff up and man people are creative and found builds I didn't even think of. For that reason alone I give the game the score i gave it.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've beaten the full game on Switch 2, and I wanted to try it again after playing through the BD1 remaster so I bought it on PC for the increased frame rate and mod support. It's really apparent going back to back how Bravely Default 2 just doesn't have the charm and heart of its predecessor. It feels soulless, it lost so much of the goofiness that defined the first two titles. Now things just feel generic to a wild degree, not helped by the visuals being far less unique, The original felt…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have to compare this game to Final Fantasy V, since it's my favorite FF game and they have similar job systems. Also, I'm only in chapter 3 so I'm just basing this off my experience. First off, I think this game starts off SLOW. The difference is with FFV, when you get jobs they start you off with 5-6 at once. This game, you have to get jobs one at a time and after some difficult boss battles. After you get some jobs and abilities, though, this game gets fun. TLDR: Slow start, but fun once…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've touched on it before but one of the big reasons why I don't like Bravely Default II is that it's so boring and uninteresting for seemingly no reason as an overcorrection. The game itself is fun, I'd def recommend if you want some good ass gameplay, but it's so boring.
neutral · AI labelView post →Next game is Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster! What a mouthful lmao this'll be the final JRPG (for now) that I have to play that's currently on the switch 2! I played Bravely Default II, so if it's any similar, I kinda have an idea of what I'm getting into
neutral · AI labelView post →Don't buy. Even while accounting what I did enjoy about the game, easily one of the worst RPGs I have played in my life. I have tried my hardest to like this like I did the two previous titles of the series, but its problems are so numerous and glaring they suck out all the enjoyment I could have taken out of the good parts. I have played on the hardest setting so I will judge basing on that. - Story is bland, half of the main character are given no real reason to even begin the journey and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an awesome game. I would've loved if it was finally the continuation I've been waiting for... "Braverly 3", but overall is wonderful 8/10. I played Bravely Default and Second on the 3DS and I'm a huge fan of them (the spiritual successors of original Final Fantasy games), and Bravely 2 does it great like those! Which is why it makes me think that the negative reviews on this come from people that actually dislike JRPGs (nothing new in this era), or people that never played the other 2…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's ok 7/10. worth it for the class system Story summary: Final Fantasy Character Summary: British accent = Heroes of Light, French accent= psycopath killer Unusual stuff: The Institute of Magic (build by genius mage) was build so the only way to go from 2nd floor to the 3rd floor, you have to go through the sewer, which is bigger than the institute itself. The characters fight many kind of monsters, undead, demons. They talk to a magical crystal as is it is normal. But, they are so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played a lot on Switch, through story completion and NG+. Bought again for Steam. One of the best modern JRPGs that honors the genre's roots. Has an absolutely amazing sound track, one of the best out of any game I've played. If you love old-school Final Fantasy (1-6) or Dragon Quest, I think you will love this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bravely Default II is a turn-based role-playing game developed by Claytechworks and published by Square Enix. It serves as a spiritual successor to the original Bravely Default series, introducing a new world, cast, and story while maintaining the franchise’s signature combat mechanics. Gameplay follows a traditional JRPG structure centered on exploration, party management, and strategic turn-based battles. The core system—“Brave” and “Default”—lets players take multiple actions in one turn or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to be really controversial and say everything about this game is just as good as Bravely Default except for the story. The story is pretty bad and forgettable. The voice acting is also a huge downgrade. I'd recommend you switch this to the Japanese voice acting and don't worry too much about the story. The mechanics and jobs are just as good if not slightly better than Bravely Default. I'm currently also playing through Bravely Default and you just can't compare it has a way better…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bravely Default II is exactly that. I finished a 100% playthrough last weekend and I highly recommend it. It totally scratched that classic FF job system itch. I've played first game as well, and while the it's fine on the surface, there's an infamously poorly constructed chapter towards the end that totally soured the whole experience for me.
positive · AI labelView post →Modern take on a classic JRPG in the Final Fantasy flavor. Pro tip: once you acquire the Beastmaster skill, there's really no need for other jobs in the game. Just start winning every fight by capturing monsters. Once you reach job level 12 you'll be unstoppable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →And to make things more confusing, the second game of the Bravely series is named Bravely Second. Bravely Default II has nothing in common with the first two games, except for the concept of the Asterisks and the Crystals - no characters are shared between II and Default/Second.
neutral · AI labelView post →Graphics: 7/10. 3D Chibi style which isn't my fave, but the watercolour style zones are beautiful. The dungeons can be a bit bland but not bad. Story: 7.5/10. Surprisingly dark at times, likeable cast. Do you like FF1,3,4,5 etc? Would you like to gather crystals? Wonderful, I've got great news for you... Character Customization: 8.5/10. Job system on par with V and almost as good as FFT. Superb. Gameplay 10/10. I'm playing through on Hard mode... its oustanding. Every boss fight…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bravely Default II: Brave Enough to Waste Your Time Chapter 3 hits like a brick to the face — backstabbing, cult nonsense, dragons, fairies, and enough whiplash to qualify as a medical condition. It’s genuinely shocking in places, and for a moment you think, *Oh. Oh no. This might actually be good.* The story becomes a roller coaster thriller that finally wakes up and starts throwing punches. And then it keeps going. And going. And going. This is where the game reveals its true form: an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am sorry that I have to write this review, but Bravely Default 2 is just... not a good game. First off, the Story, it is passable at best if you are being generous. For it being a Jrpg it is outright subpar. Half the party might as well not exist, the stories lack emotion behind them and are just the most standard stuff you can imagine. But hey, there is the combat still, right? After all, Bravely default had a quite fun combat system, nothing exceptional, but it was fun. Well, Bravely,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bland story that is sadly better than average for the genre and in general interesting mechanic ideas (mix of equipment weight, aggro rating, atb and the b&d system) brought down by bad balancing. Maybe the endgame is worth it, but i dont care enough to reach it; can't say I had a bad time but it certainly was not a good one. Not to metion the outrageous 60 bucks price. Skip unless you plan on not using the vanguard class at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has the worst reputation out of the 3 games and that's not saying it's bad. Just not as good. But I disagree. I enjoyed this one just as much as Bravely Default. I was hooked basically from the start as a turn-based fan. It's the weakest link, but not by far. If you enjoyed the first 2 games and crave more, this is definitely worth playing through. The combat and job system is so extremely well done.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+ pretty easy combat system + you are free to explore the jobs and test things out + very good OST + easy gameplay in terms of enemies and overall difficulty + pretty easy overall + character designed like chibis (Alliance Alive did better, as well as Brave 1 and Brave the Second) + charming characters with personality + well designed (but despite remaster it show its age) + well designed cities, npcs and Background + superior japanese voice lines + feels like Alliance Alive, but a lot easier +…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've loved Square's games for a long time, but this one is just the worst designed game I've seen from them. Standard battles are meaningless, letting you use the same attacks over and over just to easily grind XP. It makes it feel like I'm just forced to walk around the overworld and endure standard battles by repeating the same attack sequences over and over. Then, they introduce several mechanics with the classes only to make them meaningless with certain boss fights. Then when you come…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Are companies incapable of making a true "casual" difficulty? If I choose "casual" then I want to be able to breeze through it without having to actually learn the mechanics or play strategically--that's why it's called "casual". The first game was the right balance of casual and challenging. This game requires me to over level my characters to hell, and then still lose. Not even done chapter 1 yet, which is ridiculous.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bravely Default II accomplishes the impossible task of being a job system game where you can completely customize character builds to your liking that's somehow still hard as balls through its whole runtime
positive · AI labelView post →Overall a very fun and enjoyable experience that I recommend to anyone who likes turn based combat and / or traditional jrpgs. It feels like a great modern take on the genre with a lot of the rough edges of similar games and the previous titles ironed out. It does have its downsides, but is overall a very solid game. Also you don't need to have played any of the previous games and this one is probably the best to start with. Pros: - Very solid turn based combat. Enemies and bosses feel much…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not continuing my playthrough of Bravely Deafult 2 simply because the game is seriously lacking in many categories for me. Due to frustrating level spikes (especially bosses), tedious grinding for job leveling, regular grinding for exp seems literally useless, unengaging story and characters, removal of quality of life features, repetitive dungeon design, and the overall feeling that this game is just dragging on with no real filler or story that keeps me focused and wanting to continue,…

Built on the foundation of traditional turn-based combat, exploration, and job systems, it manages to pay homage to genre classics like Final…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well you have Final Fantasy up to 12, Persona, Dragon Quest, Octopath, Bravely Default II, Suikoden remaster, which are some multi platform games. Xenoblade, Fire Emblem are two pretty heavy and exclusive series. Then as you mentioned Mario RPG (+paper mario). I agree there are some recent JRPGs that are probably too demanding though. Clair Obscur I am hoping for a Switch 2 version, but we will see.
