This may be an unpopular opinion.. but if I have to got through 6 websites to mod the game for it to work on modern systems... I cannot recommend for average user.

This relic of a game is as old as Steam itself. I am pushing 40 in the coming years but back then in 2003 I was still young when I first played this game. I hated it. slow paced. turned based. talking a lot. too much RPG. but I pushed through all that and it came to be one of my most favourite games of my entire life. I have probably played every scenario and every conversation with every character multiple times …

STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic 1 (KOTOR 1) is universally celebrated as a milestone in gaming history and one of the greatest role-playing games ever made. It provides the quintessential, cinematic "Star Wars fantasy" that lets you rise from a mysterious Republic soldier to a powerful Jedi Knight (or Dark Lord of the Sith). 🌌 Pros: The Ultimate Star Wars Epic - Iconic, Cinematic Storytelling: The narrative …

I would gladly sell my soul to Larian if they remade this masterpiece of a game in the style of Baldur's Gate 3. Yes, it's outdated and a pain to run on modern hardware, but to this day there is no Star Wars game that ever topped this diamond in the rough as far as story goes. Also Bastila Shan. ALL HAIL LORD REVAN!

Critics, per Wikipedia
After its release on July 16, 2003, the first Xbox shipment of Knights of the Old Republic sold out within four days on shelves, which amounted to 250,000 sales during that period. This made it the console's fastest-ever seller at the time of its launch. The game ultimately sold 270,000 copies in its initial two weeks and was ranked by The NPD Group as the #2 best-selling console game of its debut month across all platforms. It fell to the eighth position on NPD's sales chart for August and was absent by September. Worldwide sales reached 600,000 copies by October. In the United States alone, the Xbox version of Knights of the Old Republic sold 1.3 million copies and earned $44 million by…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the greatest games ever made, but on modern machines a nightmare to get working properly. This game is available on various other platforms, every xbox console, the Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. I would strongly recommend playing this game on either the Nintendo Switch, or your mobile device. The xbox version has frusturating bugs (the only game ever where I have had a save corrupt), while the PC version has numerous tech issues. The Switch port is perfect, the mobile port is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game cleared up my acne and got me my first girlfriend. I then conceived my first born to the soundtrack. 5 stars
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →READ FIRST: I actually DO recommend this game but NOT on Steam. The steam version outside of heavy modding is virtually unplayable on modern PCs. Get it on Switch, Mobile, or GOG for PC. IF you absolutely want to play on steam, then through extensive modding and looking up guides on youtube, you CAN get this game playable on a modern PC with modern resolutions, bug fixes, community patches and texture packs which is how I played. I wrote a somewhat less that short review that ended up being a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For our younger generation of gamers, its an old school RPG. For us old guys, its a timeless classic that still holds up today. Definitely doing at LEAST 2 play-thrus is a MUST! I hope the younger guys and gals can enjoy it as much as we have for the last 23 years.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I actually love this game, but I can't recommend buying it due to the state its currently in. Constantly crashes, I've tried every community patch or mod fix available and it still remains unplayable. Really disappointing, because its one of the greats

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First, I just want to say that this game requires A LOT of modding. If that is not something you are willing to do, I would personally buy a copy or emulate this game for Xbox and avoid this version. If you are willing to put in a decent amount of time, you can mod out many of the terrible bugs that are present in the Steam release (and you need to because there are hundreds) with the Community Patch (I recommend downloading most mods from Deadlystream), and you can improve it to make it the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't believe I never gave this a review before but its a great time coming back to it after so many years, cannot wait for the remake and Fotor. If you are looking to play it on modern hardware, it's a real pain to get configured and modded to work in 16:9 or other widescreen ratios (2560x1440 here). But it is really worth it. It's so sad that Bioware would rather be woke, pander, and play it safe than write amazing characters and player agency like in the good ole days. HK47 to this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if you are having issues with being able to move your character after a battle, toggle v-sync, weird fix but it works, found out thanks to https://www.reddit.com/r/kotor/comments/3yvoyj/kotor_1_cant_move_character_after_battle/ adding the link so credit is listed to where I found the information also, if you play rpgs at all, this game is worth every penny a thousand times over and it can be run on almost any computer
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game but fundamentally busted on new machines. Once you reach Dattooine the shaders start going haywire and crashes are consistent. Maybe this shouldn't be on the market for purchase.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Poorly aged jank on a technical level, that needs a good amount of effort to get "working" on modern setups but 100% worth doing it, God bless golden age Bioware may the rest in peace. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More of this and less of whatever TF they are making for Star Wars nowadays. Legendary classic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Years pass but the love for this game remains. The best thing to ever come out of the entire Star Wars franchise.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Must play if you enjoy RPGs and Star Wars, widescreen mod is downright essential but other than that don't bother getting overwhelmed with the expansive and annoying mod installation process Also: Cap your framerate at 60 in the .ini file and enable V-sync unless you want to smash your head against your keyboard every few minutes
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy crap, I'd forgotten this. [alt text: Screenshot of character generation from video game STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ showing the stats of Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma for the player to assign points with a description of each stat.]

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic With the extremely hype reveal of Fate of the Old Republic (FotOR) being in development, I had to replay Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR), since it had been about 20 years since I last played it. It’s one of those games I’ve always held in extremely high regard, even though I hadn’t touched it for two decades. I could still remember the characters, the main plot, the twist, and the ending — which goes a long way toward showing just how much of an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you play this game, know that you're not just playing the best Star Wars game ever developed, you are also playing one of the best games ever made. It's a roleplaying game that still, to this day, offers countless choices to dealing with enemies, obstacles and quests, all in very different, creative and fun manners to do each of the former. It is however, important to know that this is an old game, as such, it requires support from the community to mod properly and play it with higher…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I decided to buy this on a whim and couldn't have made a better decision. Definitely one of the best games I've ever played. Even if you don't like Star Wars I recommend giving this game a try! Just enable V-sync and turn off grass in the settings so you don't encounter some really dumb bugs.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🌌 STAR WARS™: Knights of the Old Republic™ This isn’t just a game — it’s one of those childhood friends that never leaves you. I’ve probably played it more than ten times, and every run feels fresh again. Taking place 3956 years before the Battle of Yavin, it offers a completely different perspective on the Star Wars universe — far from the Skywalker saga, yet deeply connected in spirit. Even today, KOTOR feels timeless. The visuals may be dated, but the art direction, atmosphere, dialogue,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best RPGS out there, best experienced blind and with a bugfix mod which you can find on Neocities. 10/10 would spam force lightning again. Also a great game if you're on a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ potato pc, look at my specs if you don't believe me, ♥♥♥♥'s tragic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not recommend for Steam Deck users: I’ve spent hours trying to get KOTOR running properly on Steam Deck, testing multiple Proton versions, launch options, Mesa overrides, fullscreen fixes, and even GE-Proton builds. The issue isn’t Proton or the Deck, it’s the Aspyr 2015 OpenGL port that Steam distributes. This version doesn’t seem to use DirectX, so DXVK never activates. It relies entirely on OpenGL through Mesa Gallium, which repeatedly crashes with libgallium faults. Older Proton…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game shows it's age, but it holds up surprisingly well for a game that can legally drink in the states. Oddly, I didn't find myself getting hung up on the appearance all too much. Dare I say, the game looks good. The characters are really well written. The one thing makes me like the game less is the non-galactic basic voice lines. I found that there are not enough of them, and you end up hearing the same ones over and over. Overall a great game 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even with the dated graphics and the clunky d20 combat system, the story is what keeps this game alive. The twist is legendary, and the ability to choose between the Light and Dark side feels more meaningful here than in most modern games. It’s a must-play for any Star Wars fan who can handle the old-school mechanics. [The Breakdown] Graphics: Dated but iconic Gameplay: Solid; strategic turn-based combat Story: Masterpiece Difficulty: Average Grind: None Worth the price? Absolutely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →20 years later and still holds up (after getting it working on modern PCs). miss the old bioware. hope the remake does justice to this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably a great game. But crashes way too much for me to be able to enjoy it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. However, PC versions require fixes, but the real issue is inconsistency. It’s not a case of installing one recommended mod and being done. Solutions vary per system, and what works for some players may not work for others, often leading to time-consuming trial and error. I would've loved to play this again as it is one of my best childhood Star Wars games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game back in 2014, which is weird considering I played Kotor 2 back in 2005. I would say to anyone that playing the second game first really adds to this mystery to the character of Revan. So when I finally played Kotor 1 it was like exploring the footsteps of that character. It really added to the legend of that character. Fantastic game. 10/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun, enjoyable game. Probably the definitive Star Wars role playing game. Sure would be nice if modern aspect Ratios were supported, would also be nice if characters didn't randomly freeze after combat encounters, the game needs to be updated for modern hardware
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the game but hate that I can't write a marriage proposal to Bastila Shan.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Peak BioWare storytelling. Memorable companions, meaningful choices, and one of the best twists in gaming. The combat shows its age, but the writing and atmosphere carry it effortlessly. If you like Star Wars or RPGs even a little, this is essential.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved what little gameplay I had with this game. But I cannot in good faith recommend this to anyone. The game barely works, and when it does, It crashes constantly. Any third party patches I install Immediately brick the game, and the widescreen patches I installed still dont work no matter what I do. Maybe I am stupid, sure. But even still, I have had it with this game. Im sure its amazing, but I do not want to play this anymore because of how badly it runs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly the best Starwars game ever made played. Ive beaten this game at least half a dozen times in my life and it always feels fun to replay. Nearly every negative comment on this game boils down to "I couldnt figure out 30 yearold basic RPG mechanics" or "the game pauses so you can have planned and articulated RPG combat in an RPG game" wait till they find out you can use vats in fallout or use an ability wheel in mass effect. Absolute goat of all starwars games and I pray the remake…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game constantly crashes. after fights you can't move and have to save and reload constantly. growing up I loved this game but playing on steam is the equivalent of playing with a steaming pile of garbage.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the story. I played the game when it first came out for windows. I now play it under steam in a linux mint o/s
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good game but needs a lot of work to get working on pc i recommend playing on a console the game needs a remaster on pc ASAP i can only save and load to walk again so many times
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a classic, but as a first-timer with none of the nostalgia most have with this game, I must say it has aged poorly. It's a typical Bioware title, with the usual Good Guy vs Comically Evil choices that are ever-present in all their games. There is very little room for any actual moral nuance. As for gameplay, it plays a lot like Neverwinter Nights, just a lot less refined. It's alright I guess, easy and pretty boring once you figure out the formular. That being said, it's dirt-cheap these…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An actual great game, i was not that hopeful of it when i started but it turned out to be one of my fav games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →is still better than most modern RPGs. The story, characters, and player choices have more depth than many newer games, making it a timeless classic. The controls have definitely aged, and they can feel a bit clunky and frustrating at times. However, once you get used to them, the game easily makes up for it with its incredible story and gameplay. The community is another huge reason to play it. There are amazing mods that improve the graphics, fix bugs, and enhance the overall experience…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. One of the best rpgs ive ever played years ago. Cant play on a widescreen monitor without jumping through a bunch of hoops, with no guarantee any of the fixes will work. I just cant play this, with the experience smashed vertically or the game played in a small window.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried to get this running on 2 different computers and nothing works. I've tried modding and doing all the steps that people tell you to to get it running, and it just doesn't. I'm really bummed because I loved this game back in the day and wanted to feel the nostalgia. Guess they just stole my money....
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Various amounts of soft locks, ai that will either stun lock you or force storm you to death, player constantly getting stuck after any type of combat or cutscene, companions blocking your way and even sometimes just wondering off on their own and lets not forget the crashes made KOTOR 1 one of the most annoying experiences of my life Yet I loved every moment of it, Our main characters quest for an identity and to save the world was beautiful. Each world has a star map within it and while…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Certified classic one of the best star wars games ever for me probably number 3 even better with mods
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a crazy game, Tbh I don’t expect anything less than this from BioWare like how could you make a good game like this in 2003
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great story but couldn't recommend it based on the huge number of bugs which seem to ramp up as you get closer to the end
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wars KOTOR is an amazing game of my childhood that tells the story of (in my opinion) some of the most interesting and coolest characters in the world of Star Wars. If you’ve been interested in giving it a go because you’ve heard a lot of great things about it but are being put off by the dated graphics, turn based combat etc, I recommend you try it for yourself and set it up with some mods that really elevate the experience and I promise this game will give you some of the best fun and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →KOTOR is Star Wars at its best. Rugged planets, interesting characters, and funny dialogue. It's a great video game and I'd recommend it to anyone.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its an oldie, but goodie, I play it once every few years. its good to remember better days.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been over twenty years since I first played Kotor, and in all this time I can say I've had one constant in my life, the overwhelming desire to wish someone would Death Star Manaan, I hate those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Selkath with a passion. Easily the best star wars game out there, and I can't wait to see how the remake butchers this timeless classic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Instead of a remake, just make this game run on modern systems. Do like you did with 'KOTOR II,' where you add some modern features. Modern resolutions, steam achievements, steam workshop. Why not? It'd be pure pazaak.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →holds up really well, it ran without any tinkering and had no issues with crashing. i'm not even a star wars fan the game is just a charming and engaging RPG.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game that changed the game. RIP Bioware.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After spending over 300 hours with Knights of the Old Republic, I can say it remains one of the most memorable RPGs I’ve ever played. What I liked most is how deeply the game pulls you into its world. The writing is still sharp, the characters feel alive, and the choices you make genuinely shape the story in ways that matter. The moral decisions, the companions, and the slow build toward one of the best twists in gaming all hold up incredibly well. The combat and movement can feel dated today,…
