I'd like to enjoy this game, being an Australian made RPG but even after significant patches the game is just not good. Combat, while not a core part of why I enjoy RPGs is awful. There's a nonsense cover system and vague AP system but at least in the early game each round mostly consists of "move slightly, shoot, end turn". Which given that enemies seem to consistently outnumber you and compared to your party are …

I don’t know who came up with the idea of implementing a moral system in such a way that it completely cuts off any variability in choice, literally removing the opportunity to act in individual situations as you think is necessary, and not as the authors think you would act. If someone fell for the "deep moral system of the game", then know that it is not even close to here, because having literally made a couple …

This game has greatly improved since launch and is now genuinely fun to play. As of June 2024 I had minor quest progression, graphics and game-play glitches, but because the game maintains several rolling auto-saves it was always easy to reload before these glitches. I was concerned about this game given the reviews, but I'm guessing the big patch solved the issues brought up because I haven't encountered any. The game to me feels like Wasteland 3 set in Australia with Disco Elysium's interface and odd morality system. As a big fan of post-apocalyptic CRPGs (having played Fallout games since the original in the late 90s) there's definitely the Fallout/Wasteland feel, but the …

Played and finished game in 2026 Jan. There have been few discussion posts like "Has this game been abandoned?" or "How buggy this is?". I don't know, but I played this game through (once, as Jackaroo/Thinker/Utilitarian) in 2026 January with [english_only] version "Play in English only with the latest updates". I don't know how much it is different from earlier versions, which year ago was said to have more bugs. Nor do I know (or care about) any future plans, but this seems to work just…

The Good: Nice to see something set in Australia. The philosophy was an interesting twist. Some fun mechanics once you progress enough to meet the magician. The Bad: Balance feels off, chance encounters at early level can absolutely wreck your party if you fail to escape and haven't perfectly optimised. The Ugly: Just under 10 hours in and starting to hit my stride, cannot continue game or load saves the menu just greys out. Can start a new game but not sure If i trust that to not do the…

Disclaimer: Just over 6 hours played. I held off on buying and playing this game due to the initial reactions and bug reports, but now Drop Bear Bytes have been churning out quite a few updates and fixes and the more recent reviews look better. Granted, I've only played 6 out of the projected ~30 hours, where I stopped short because of a bug that froze the game so I had to force quit…

I'm a huge fan of the ISO RPGs like Fallout 1/2, Wastelands, Colony Ship, etc. An hour into this one, I was obsessed. It has a cool setting, interesting characters, and a compelling opening story/chapter. 10 hours in, I was getting pretty frustrated by the buggy quests, tedious leveling, and incessant "raster scan the mouse slowly around the entire map trying to find the one tiny place that your quest item is hidden". This game was pretty frustrating. While I like the genre and the style, there are quite a few annoyances. Why so many weapons, skills and team members, that don't make any difference in gameplay? In the end everyone is most efficient with high shooting skills and a sniper rifle in their hand. The last dialogs didn't seem to have any connection to the rest of the game. Some characters just leave your party without identifiable motivation. Also no matter my previous decisions the game tries to…

I rarely review games. Mostly because I do not consider myself a literary talent. However, in this case I felt compelled to write one. I've been playing cRPG's since 1992. I started with Ultima Underworld and realized that I was hooked. New worlds opened up to me and allowed me to create some assemblance of myself in a game and send it out to do great things. I've been playing them ever since. Now this takes me to "Broken Roads". I really enjoyed this game. Took me about 39…

I'm just going to assume that no one is going to look at a two year old game with barely over 50% positive reviews and decide to drop $35 on it, but obviously don't do that. I picked this up on sale after the developer made some detailed promises about upgrades that don't seem likely to be delivered upon any time soon. With that said, I tried it out for a bit of time and found the bones of a solid CRPG to be in place. The intro doesn't make the best impression, with a bunch of nearly empty…

I compare it to encased, But still Encased is also more flushed out then this, But this game is ok for a indie title. 7/10

I love the genre and I wanted to love the game also. I did try to enjoy it right up to the end but there were just so many the broken quests. Add the disappearing NPCs, the underwhelming combat mechanics, and limited variations of enemies and weapons. I hated the most the need to move the mouse back and forth across the screen to find a quest item. The ending didn't reflect the choices I made during the game. It just focused on two factions. When my entire group missed the enemy, both in close combat and in long range, I simply deleted it immediately without regret. Moreover, they were not at the initial level, but at the average level, and their weapon mastery skill was also above average. And they still all missed, out of the blue. The enemy, on the contrary, did not miss a single time, and I realized that this was not the game I was ready to waste my time and nerves on. Let the developers play this stupid roulette themselves.

While it for sure had a rocky start, the team has been diligent at getting things back on course. The game has interesting and likeable (and interesting and punchable) characters. The combat system is easy to understand. Levelling is straightforward. The morality system and skills attached to it are a fascinating twist on things. While Broken roads had a few interesting concepts that make it stand out, it doesn't usesthem to their full potential. The morality system which is split between utilitarian, machiavellian, nihilist and Humanist and while it is a refreshing break from the simple Good/evil binary it doesn't have a major effect on much in the game beyond dialogue options and it still falls into same pit that the good/evil binary does. tl;dr - this game is JANKY AF. the mechanics are awful, and the storyline is insipid. You will feel minimal agency playing this game but be fully cognisant that your time is being wasted via meaningless character upgrades (scale of 1-100 for 12 different attributes - really?!) and "moral compass dialogues" that have literally no impact on the outcome of this point-and-click game. There is potential here but it's not realised at least in this title. It feels like the devs made this game without actually playing any game in the genre. Loot system could be better you need to loot each enemy (no loot everyone close or maybe loot everything when you leave an area like the pathfinder or rogue trader has). Combat is not bad but rather basic. The right click and scroll to use abilities is clanky. it's challenging the first few hours but afterwards you mow down everything…

I had high hopes for this game. It became so frustrating - and for the price this shouldn't be the way a game is played. I put up with not being able to "see" under trees and foes positions while in combat or being gummed up with several close up foes that you couldn't really "see". The game just stalls on the story line; and you have no idea what to do next so you just do a "walk about" forever hoping you will come across some clue or or some closure to your quest. So frustrating! Not…

They keep patching and it keeps getting better but right now it's a great crpg with turn based combat that is challenging but fair with good difficulty settings. TL;DR try it out if you like RPGs. I purchased the game during the Autumn Sale. The game has some unique aspects. Unlike the video on the store page, the game is mostly a narrative RPG. The setting is Australian Outback hundreds of years after an all-out nuclear war. It is small party, top down, turn based combat. But much of the game is completing quests. I did wait to buy it until it appeared that some stuff had been cleaned up, but even viewing it from a distance it was pretty obvious that there was something of value here, even as troubled as the launch was. I picked up this game despite some negative reviews because a YouTuber I trust recommended it. I knew it was short for the price, but I hoped multiple playthroughs would make it worthwhile. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite click for me. The story didn’t grab my interest, and the companions felt a bit too generic to keep me invested. Quest design leaned heavily on simple fetch loops—go to A, then B, then back to A—which made progression feel repetitive. The biggest letdown, though, was the…

From a purely technical standpoint, the game is mostly playable. I only experienced one soft lock during a battle, and performance overall was acceptable. The real issue is not stability, it is how often the game breaks its own quests. Roughly 40% of the quests I encountered had some kind of issue. Aside from very basic…

It should be a good game IF they ever finish it. Poor execution on quests. I played until I literally could not progress any of the quests.

I do not know how the game was when it launched but now it is pretty impressive! I still havent finished it but spent almost 4 hours and still enjoying it. No bugs, nice characters, very text heavy, not much combat though. But what I really dont like is sparce voice acting without any sense - one sentence is voiced, another not, then still the other in the same conversations is, I really cant understand what the developers were thinking. Otherwise it is a pretty decent game now and I recommend…

Broken Roads is an RPG similar to Fallout but based on Australia. So far, pretty good! The GOOD: - You get EXP by looking at the typical (?) icons you find in these games (if you played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Tyranny or the Owlcat Games, you know what I mean). This encourages exploration, since it means not only combat and loot, but also small exp from these sources. - There is a skill called Punt. It basically gives you a set of points (Punt points) that allow you to either spend them to…

This game has a classic RPG style, emphasizing narrative and dialogue. Therefore, the pace is slower when compared to combat-focused RPGs. You need to explore every inch, talk to NPCs, and make decisions based on everything you saw and heard, following the chosen moral line. I was waiting for the May patch to start playing, and I assure you that I didn't come across most of the problems reported in bad reviews posted when the game was released. In just over 3h of playing, I've already faced 4…

I recently played the Shadowrun trilogy and I was in the mood for another CRPG that wasn't set in some medieval fantasy land, so I was wondering whether to play Wasteland 2 or this one and I ultimately decided on this one to give a smaller game with no attached franchise a try. Much to my surprise, it turned out to have a tone that's really reminiscent of the Wasteland games based on the demos I played, but on top of that ended up being a sort of appropriate bridge between Shadowrun and…

Upon starting this game I ran into a game-breaking bug in the first fight. Twice. I wrote a dour review about it and the next day, the Dev was in my email trying to fix the problem. I live in the USA. If my healthcare was this good, we wouldn't have a fascist in office.

A swing and a miss for me. I love turn based rpgs and in a lot of ways this is a good one. It's the ways it's not for me that have me going thumb down. And the main one is that I spend way to much time lost and not undrstanding what to do or where to go; and a lot of that is on the journal which is very lacking at the job of a journal which is reminding one where they were going what they need to do and who to interact with.

The victim to a rough start, the developers at Drop Bear Byte are taking the No Mans Sky approach, listening to the audience feedback and making changes to improve the game from their launch, already within a year showing tremendous progress in turning their game around. GAMEPLAY A tactical RPG set in a post apocalypse Australia. The level progression system is simple to understand for anyone with any RPG experience, and a unique setting. "But it's like fallout", except it's less quirky weird…

Really wanted to complete this game, liked the strory line, graphics are ok, even lived with the clunky navigation and combat mechanics which slowly grown on you. But when most of my quest log ends up being bugged out quests that don't seem completelable, I need to abandon the game. I saw in forums the developer was very active fixing stuff a year or two ago, but apparently never finished (not even close). It's a buggy mess :(

It's with a heavy heart that I give any indie RPG a thumb-down, but this one deserves it. Everything about it is so half-baked and not up-to-the-par that there is no other way. Here's my breakdown: 1) Quests: this is the biggest problem. The game is 95% fetch quests. You talk to one character, then go and talk to another character, quest complete. There is no sense of achievement, there are no obstacles to overcome. Scavenger's Hunt type of quests constitute another 2-3%, and I just don't…

I got 5 hours in the game. I see, like others, the resemblance to Wasteland game, but better graphics. I am liking the Aussie theme and the voices, gives it a different feel then most other games we play on Steam. I appreciate the fast forward feature when walking. Game is lacking a but in quest log context, but not enough to stop me from playing. I do REALLY enjoy the moral compass of it and the abilities that come with your place on the compass. Overall, I think the game is fun, but if its…

Lots of bugs, many quest breaking. Several decisions lead to outcomes that don't make any sense. Didn't feel like you were making your own way in the game but just part of someone else's story.

I really wanted to like this game. I purposely waited to buy the game to give the developers a chance to patch it. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into this game. Bad quest design, way to many characters to keep track of, boring story and dialogue and weak combat were the big problems I had with the game. The only positives were the graphics and the fact I got it on sale for $12.00.

I've been interested in the philosophical RPG concept and the moral compass ever since I first heard about those. It's great that the game allows for behaving in morally gray areas. Killing a man who is about to die or trying to help him even though he wouldn't survive? Which one is more humane? Most of the quests are well-written and fun. I really enjoyed playing all the story. And I investigated other options by saving and loading the game. The choices you make really change the whole…
