A decent narrative-driven game, with some significant caveats. I think this is the most blatantly Disco Elysium-inspired game I've ever played, right down to it opening in the aftermath of the player character's alcohol-fueled bender. Trouble is, Disco Elysium was still a CRPG, despite lacking many of that genre's hallmark mechanics. Sovereign Syndicate's RPG mechanics are a paper-thin veneer. Your ability to make …

Sovereign Syndicate is a narrative-driven role-playing game developed by Crimson Herring Studios that blends classic CRPG sensibilities with a distinctive Victorian steampunk setting. Great game to explore a steampunk fantasy world while sipping on a cup of tea! Storyline is interesting and the character designs along with the skills/attributes system makes it a clear: GO PLAY! Don't compare this with disco elysium's complexity, this game has a charm of its own!

74% of the 192 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Sovereign Syndicate. The complaint that keeps coming up: heavily inspired by Disco Elysium but inferior. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Sovereign Syndicate received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. RPGFan noted, "Sovereign Syndicate is a game of highs and lows. If there is to be more to the story, the gameplay portion would need some rethinking to make it work. But on the positive side, I loved the world and characters, and I'd be excited to see more of them." PC Invasion praised the writing but felt the ending was rushed. PC Gamer said with its emphasis on roleplay rather than combat and borrowings from Disco Elysium, Sovereign Syndicate feels like another step forward for the CRPG. RPGamer said that the game "makes for a lovely take on the gaslamp fantasy…

This starts out pretty charming and fun, but snowballs into a pile of repetitive tasks set in the exact same 5 locations that you grow tired of after the second go. Quests have no branching resolutions so if you failed one dialogue check you either reload or you're done with it forever. QoL stuff is mediocre at best. I really tried to stick with it until the end - the game isn't very long - but realizing you're not completing a 16 hour long quest because of a very random skill check in an…

According to the achievements I completed seven of this game's eighteen chapters. I have absolutely no desire to continue, and my recommendation to others is to not start at all. I don't think I've ever played a game with such an interesting premise and potential in world building that was so incredibly boring. One of the characters is a Minotaur illusionist, another is a dwarf with a robot pal verging on sentience, and the other is a lady.... You'd think there would be SOMETHING interesting…

80% of players didn't even get past chapter 2 of 18. I am one of them. The in-game graphics are very weak, the music isn't offensive, but seems to be on a 30 second loop, there's no voice acting, failing or succeeding a skill check results in an identical outcome, except that you maybe get some bonus exp on a success. The game is extremely abrupt with its introduction and then is paced terribly. You wake up being jostled by a seeming bounty hunter, who just peaces out and says "ok go ahead…

A very disappointing game. It is technically Disco Elysium alike but really it can't hold a candle. The plot is weak, the characters shallow, and the maps are dull and largely empty of anything but fluff descriptions. The story is overall poorly implemented - it goes from setting-the-scene to a mad rush of story leaps and then the end. I don't feel like I had much control over the story either - it felt on rails, but I cannot be bothered replaying bits to see if I can change any major…

Alright. Sovereign Syndicate is done and dusted. I've seen this described as a Disco Elysium-like, but I haven't quite gotten around to playing DE yet. It does seem like an accurate comparison best I can tell though. This is a semi open world RPG with zero combat. Everything is resolved via dialogue decisions and skill checks. To that end, it is important to note that this is a dialogue dependent game, so for people unwilling to read and pay attention to what they are reading, this isn't the…

This was a tough one to figure out my feelings for, but it did make me feel like I needed to say something about it. I wish there was a sideways thumb to rate this game using, since it wasn't the worst, but it also wasn't anything very good either. The developers have clearly done a lot of work, and I feel like I should reward them for going for a narrative-heavy CRPG (because it is a risk). But this type of game depends 100% on the writing, and this just isn't at the level it needs to be. I could expand on smaller issues with stuff like items in the environment rarely being interesting to interact with, unmemorable characters or the mouse-over words feeling superfluous, but everything comes back to the writing just not being good enough…

Low concept and extremely low frequency imitation of what is clearly supposed to be an ode to Disco Elysium. This here game is what happens when morbidly unexceptional people try to write a storyline with the weak understanding of alt-polit culture only a redditor possesses. Trying to impose the clear conviction and world-view of the writers on a subject matter that is supposedly rooted in conservative times is exactly what Disco Elysium avoided. Ask yourself why Disco Elysium felt so…

RPG and adventure with a lot of secrets to uncover.... love it ! A game, you can and want to play more than once, as you always discover new things, if you are courageous enough to risk ways and traits for your Chars. I was a newbie to tarot and all.... and was very positively surprised, how easily the game teaches you how to lead your chars through their paths. Highly recommended!

I enjoy the setting to a large extent and the game looks nice and it is refreshing to see a non-combat based RPG but... The game doesn't feel very RPG. The characters feel extremely defined, meaning if you don't like a character, there isn't really a way of getting them to shut up. The 'Hope' meter is super basic and makes even random dialogue choices feel like a massive non-choice, as some choices boil down to 'gain Hope' or 'lose Hope' and 'Hope' is essentially health. The stat system is…

Mom, can we have Disco Elysium? No. There is Disco Elysium at home. Disco Elysium at home... No, seriously: Sovereign Syndicate has style, atmosphere and a pretty unique setting, but the writing just doesn’t carry it. The pacing feels off, characters lack depth and choices rarely feel impactful if not outright railroading the player. It’s clear a lot of effort went into this and it has some interesting mechanics, but as a heavily narrative-driven RPG, it needs way stronger writing and actual…

But I can't in good faith recommend this game to my friends, which is why ultimately I have to give this a thumbs down. I'll start off with the good parts of this game. I wanted to cautiously rate Sovereign Syndicate as positive, but, as I started writing this, I kept coming up with more reasons to wave people away than beckon them towards. Sovereign Syndicate tells the story of three, eventually four, protagonists, as they each try to pick up their lives from the gutter. It is not a story of their triumphs per se. It is most certainly the story of how the crown takes advantage of their predicaments and emotional vulnerabilities to manipulate them into…

The most entertaining thing about this game are the Oscar Wilde quotes. - The story is decent, but it drags. - The gimmick of switching between 3 characters becomes tiresome quickly. - The UI is aggravating. You have no control over the camera, and spend the entire game focused on the top of your characters head. - I could go on, but this game took enough of my time already. I recommend you play "The Necromancer's Tale" instead if you like this genre. It is much better implemented and…

This game was okay and I don't regret my time spent playing it, but I don't think what is there is worth $26. A lot of the weaknesses fell under this game’s lack of identity - it wants to be Disco Elysium SO bad (opens with a character recovering from a bender, morale system, skills speak to you, skill checks function almost exactly the same etc) but most of what is copied is not as strong. For example the morale system was so easy to game that I kept forgetting about it. Also the solution to…

It has a promising start and premise, the story itself is interesting enough, but thats unfortunately about all it has going for it. The gameplay is simply, hardly even a game. The dialogue choices are slim and seldom matter much. It would have done much better to have leaned on its comic elements and been a visual novel than whatever this is trying to be. All of this could be looked past if the ending was satisfactory but it is not. It is instead a rushed exposition dump of the authors going…

Sovereign Syndicate is very much like Disco Elysium, to the extend that it even starts in exactly the same way (with the protagonist waking up with voices in his head after a drinking bender). It plays pretty much the same way too, and luckily the story is different after initial similarities. Yes, as long as you know what you're getting into. This is not Disco Elysium. Almost nothing you do will have significant consequences. This is more like a visual novel and the story is pretty linear. The side quests are flexible and you can even skip them. The world building is excellent but once the novelty wears off, it becomes a drudgery to finish the game. It would have been nice if it was fully voiced, but there's a song in one of the chapters!

This would maybe deserve a neutral thumb, but ultimately, game just fails to deliver on its promise of a cool, mysterious RPG-like TTRPG/visual novel experience. POSITIVES: - Nice art overall - Cool world & ambience - Dialogue, while not always great, feels authentic to the world and was mostly quick and to the point (instead of becoming word diarrhea like some other games in this genre) - The hope meter, while not significant as a mechanic, was actually memorable even still. Writing isn't bad per se, I would even go ahead and say it's decent but it kinda lacks variability (at least for a game that Sovereign Syndicate tries to be). I can't call it a RPG because I don't feel I have a lot of player agency and the choices made don't seem to have any impact on the story. This is a unique game in that it doesn't have any combat, but isn't completely a "point and click" either. You play as a few different characters which I initially was confused about, because I didn't have time to finish my side quests before the switch. The quests stay with your characters, however, so you can finish them when you get thrown back into that character. I dropped the game last year after finishing Chapter 8 (I played it offline mode) and decided to give it a try. But I still didn't click with it. The devs did a great job making each of the characters not only feel unique, but make their interactions with the same NPCs feel different. This is a high-quality detective game, and the investigation is conducted not only by the characters but also by the player, since only the player can piece together the clues from their three different stories told from three different perspectives, to figure things out before the game reveals them (or doesn’t reveal them at all). An interesting, and ultimately decent, game. It's clearly influenced by Disco Elysium in specific and narrative RPGs in general. The writing is generally decent-to-good, and it did feel like enough of an RPG that my stats mattered, but I question how much influence you'd truly have across the unfolding of the narrative other than a few choices at the very end. Sovereign Syndicate is a very different kind of experience to what I expected, and it is certainly not for everyone. It is more like an isometric walking-simulator than anything, with you exploring an alternate London shaped by steampunk, multiple mythological species and the occassional bit of magic. I think the cutoff point for most will come down to how much reading you can tolerate, for there is a lot here. If you can deal with that, and you like adventures and alternate history, or just…

it starts out interesting but drags on for far too long and leaves a lot of plot threads hanging for a sequel thats unlikely to come

Great game to explore a steampunk fantasy world while sipping on a cup of tea! Storyline is interesting and the character designs along with the skills/attributes system makes it a clear: GO PLAY! Don't compare this with disco elysium's complexity, this game has a charm of its own!

Personally I don't like multiple protagonists. Also I don't think it is an RPG. And finally it isn't even close to Disco Elisium level.

It was a good game; it kept me hooked right up until the end. That said, it’s more of a visual novel—the “CRPG” label is pretty unnecessary. 9/10 More deep games: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45665580 And part 2: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/46219602

Has some potential but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ having one good character and mystery would have been better than four half baked characters and an incredibly lackluster mystery. Also, no real consequences to any of your choices or actions, failing or succeeding a check will not change anything

What an absolutely wonderful game, if you like a good read with simple puzzles and option driven txt and replies, with a little magic , you will love this. Not sure everyone will understand the Scottish lass banter and pronunciation but, it's great. Well worth a few £ for this, it's long mind you so, i do hope you love a good read. :)

I've very much liked this game so far, i'd been eyeing it for a while. It's like Disco Elysium lite, and i mean that in the most positive, flattering way possible. I always really liked the DE mechanics, but the tone and plot were a bit too... real? I quite like the tarot system in lieu of dice too.

I enjoyed the world building, I enjoyed the Tarot Mechanics, and the Planescape: Torment/Disco Elysium stylings of the game. Top marks for the Otto chapter, honestly wish there had been more time playing the quirky automaton! The Bad: Choices weren't really meaningful, it really was more of a visual novel than anything, and very meandering/not too exciting. It really felt like the introduction for another game. I would love to see more produced in this world but I would like some proper…

No doubt the game is flavorful - the steampunk aesthetic and feel hits the nail. But I expected so much more from this game. In the end, it feels like a boring linear, read & click, fetch quest game that has no stakes. I genuinely got bored by the 4 hour mark and could not care to continue.

Don't expect Disco Elysium, but this is worth playing if you liked D.E. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and storytelling in this unique "steampunk" world. Once you get used to the "story told from multiple perspectives and characters" nature of the game its rich and engaging. Kudos for putting it together, not being wholly predictable, and making me care about what happens to all (very minor spoiler) four protagonists

An isometric psychological steampunk RPG inspired by Disco Elysium. Graphics is a mix of steampunk, victorian and fantasy elements, the closest equivalent would be show Carnival Row. The world is shown from a fairly distant isometric-like camera, with 2-D character close-ups during conversations and occational motion comics depicting action scenes. Music works well with the setting. At the time of this review there is almost no voice acting, but it will be added in the future update. The…

That was a legitimately good game. Like, really good. It's similar in gameplay to Disco Elysium. It's also similar in quality. The game is told in, like, 18 chapters. Each chapter is about one of the 3-4 main characters. The characters occasionally run into each other but they don't work together. The stories: A junkie orphan minotaur wants to find his mom, a cyborg dwarven monster hunter engineer wants to improve his robot and a high class prostitute wants to skip town but is instead…

I just have to say that everyone is comparing this to Disco Elysium. For me Disco Elysium was a little boring and I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes. this game is way more interesting. the world is stimulating and the people are neat. I will say some of the open areas are a little to big and they could do with a run button.

definitely needs some QoL improvements, like tracking the main quest; I've failed so many side activities just because I accidentally progressed the plot to the next chapter Also it is not as much RPG as it is adventure game with some skillchecks

the character swaps were annoying since you suddenly have to remember what was happening there and also ruined the immersion. (6/10)
