What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 223 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (19,121 of 20,522 positive).
Players praise the game as a love letter to heavy metal with an incredible soundtrack and voice cast. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the RTS segments clunky and the controls awkward. [4][5][6] Many recommend it to metal fans despite mixed feelings about the gameplay. [7][8][9]

Boring, boring very boring. Jack Black essentially plays himself like he does every role and its charming to a pont. Abysmal controls and the gameplay is like an unseasoned chicken breast. Plain, bland and very uninteresting. The only redeeming qaulity is the soundtrack .

best game EVER, 3 absolute legends voicing in this game. RIP Tim curry and Ozzy Osbourne

The best tribute to heavy metal and niche music subgenres ever made in videogames. Somewhat, ruined by a clunky combat strategy system that in theory sounds so cool but in practice it's a nightmare. Couldn't finish it because of this. A remaster of it would be absolutely nuts. Long live to Double Fine. They were the real legends.

Brutal Legend is what happens when Jack Black, heavy metal and a fever dream fuse into a video game and somehow it goes absolutely hard. The world is dripping in style, the writing is genuinely funny and the soundtrack is so good it should come with a prescription. Eddie Riggs is peak fictional human being. The only catch is that halfway through, the game looks you dead in the eyes and goes surprise, it's an RTS …

Players who liked Brutal Legend talk about amazing soundtrack featuring many metal bands; those who didn't talk about rTS segments are clunky and awkward to control. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Brütal Legend received positive response from gaming journalists, with reviewers praising the story and characters of the game, and driven vocal performances of the voice actors, particularly Black and Osbourne. Daemon Hatfield of IGN felt Black was "completely committed" to the role of Riggs, while Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis found it relieving that Black reined in his typical "loud-talking heavy-metal goofball" act that he is known for and instead performed well, "bringing just the right amount of working-man's matter-of-fact-ness to the role". Osbourne's role was considered "amazing (and surprisingly coherent)" by GameSpot's Giancarlo Varanini and "played brilliantly" by Computer and Video…

positive · AI labelView post →Doviculus #TimCurry Video Game: Brutal Legend Year: 2009 Tim Curry was part of a wild voice cast for @doublefine.com's heavy metal-theme video game. Starring Jack Black, Brutal Legend also featured the voices of Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, and Lita Ford. #BrutalLegend
neutral · AI labelView post →Finished replaying Brutal Legend, still pretty much one of my faves. Of course any game that adds King Diamond in the soundtrack will be a favorite of mine. Decided to doodle a battle nun from it as a warm up.
positive · AI labelView post →I want to play a video game that feels like Dio sang it into existence. Unfortunately no such game exists and you just know some jerk is going to ask you if you've heard of Brutal Legend, which is a game about Dio, not a game sung by Dio

neutral · AI labelView post →Well that's cool - Double Fine have put Brutal Legend up on Itch and are currently giving it away for free. Great game with an all-timer soundtrack. Only downside is that online multiplayer (which is shockingly good) is for the Steam version only, so if you do buy it, buy it there.
positive · AI labelView post →Might need to play Brutal Legend today in honor of Ozzy. Very underrated game. Would love to see a sequel someday.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game #9 completed in 2026: Brutal Legend! @doublefine.com really knocked it out of the park with this one. This game is fantastic! It was devastating to hear @timoflegend.bsky.social recently mention there were plans for a BL 2, but got cancelled 😭. I'll keep dreaming! 🤘
positive · AI labelView post →They already created this game. It was called [Brutal Legend](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Br%C3%BCtal_Legend) It was quite good.
positive · AI labelView post →The tutorial had Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath playing in the background that alone gives this game a thumbs up

My fav video game of all time, has inspired me so much and inspired these looks! Thank you to @timoflegend.bsky.social and @doublefine.com for giving us this gift of Metal! 🤘🏻😝🤘🏻
positive · AI labelView post →Brutal Legend made no money and wasn't a good game and DF had to ask the bands *individually* if they could use the songs they wanted to pull. Half of the reason you can't buy it is because of those rights being lapsed. But sure, let's do it again.
negative · AI labelView post →A few months ago. I made a video about my love for Brutal Legend. A flawed yet awesome game Brutal Legend Epitomizes the Spirit of Heavy Metal youtu.be/0-ChM9rhHGY
positive · AI labelView post →Brutal Legend. MC voiced by Jack Black. Had a weird RTS component that I didn’t appreciate. Otherwise a really good game.
neutral · AI labelView post →This may be one of the greatest games ever, when you have Jack black, Lemmy, Ozzy, Lita ford, Tim Curry, AND ROB HALFORD voice acting, you know this game is gonna be good. not to mention They got ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GLENN TIPTON to do all playable solos. and i should also mention the soundtrack which fetures EMPEROR, ANTHRAX, MOTORHEAD, SABBATH, KING DIAMOND AND A ♥♥♥♥ TON MORE. you are doing yourself a diservice by not playing this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thinking about the game Brutal Legend again today. Shame the creators couldn't go all the way like they wanted with the game.
neutral · AI labelView post →A game literally with the only badass start menu of all time. What happened with games? Rest in Peace, Ozzy Osbourne. You're immortalized.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a fairly decent hack and slash with a great cast, amazing soundtrack, and a lot of funny moments. I wouldn't recommend it to any non metalhead but I imagine anyone who enjoys both video games and heavy metal would enjoy Brutal Legend. RIP Ozzy. RIP Lemmy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if you're a metal head then buy this game. the soundtrack is the best thing ever conceived by mankind. the only good thing EA has ever done was approve all of the licensing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →us Brutal Legend fans are still coping with the fact that we will likely never get a second game/remaster. regardless of how unlikely/impractical it might be for DF, we will never stop dreaming!
neutral · AI labelView post →Brutal Legend isn't a good game but when people reference its funniest lines I absolutely go "haaaa, I see you, you're cool"

neutral · AI labelView post →This would also ban Brutal Legend, which just raised around $6,000 for charity when the game was made free after Ozzy's death.
neutral · AI labelView post →The game is "free" but you can also pay whatever you want for it, and I believe it goes directly to Double Fine (correct me if I'm wrong), so you should do that while also getting the game because both Brutal Legend and Double Fine kick ass.
positive · AI labelView post →it's not that i think it's impossible to love or anything, i sure do like that game but yknow i'm like ddid people actually play Brutal Legend 😰 shittt i dont think that game needs a sequel so much as i think it deserves a largely-intact version of itself that is just more fun to play
neutral · AI labelView post →This game is awesome. Rip Ozzy and mad respect for Jack Black.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brutal Legend, one of my favorites. Loves the rts elements in it, which most seem to hate lol. But I loved the game and its story. Features Ozzy Osborne too.
positive · AI labelView post →This game literally has everything you can ask for. Fun fighting, RTS, banging sound track, babes, good art direction, Jack Black, Ozzy . Seriously, what more can you ask for?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(note: this is my fourth copy of this game, bought it on release on X360, again for the X360 when I lost my original, and a third time for the PS3, then this one when it came to Steam. i also have two more PC copies and the recent itch io release.) neutral · AI labelView post →This is the ultimate game for any metalhead. There has never been (and never will be) a better soundtrack for a video game. If you like rock/metal or despise current music trends - play this game,
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is just if Jack Black was the mc of an isekai anime except the world is Dante's Inferno and I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love it. Also Ozzy is here (RIP my goat)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Random Game of the Day 115 - Brutal Legend An awesome open world strategy game featuring many legends of the heavy metal and rock bands. I recall this having a rough time coming out due to issues with both Activision and EA and the fact that many people were turned off from the strategy gameplay
positive · AI labelView post →I know it's not gonna happen. But.... Brutal Legend 2. I'm begging lol Or remaster of the first game. I'm sure it's not at all licensing hell for the music rights 😂
neutral · AI labelView post →Sure, the gameplay mix is unusual, but that’s part of the magic. It's a wild, stylish, loud adventure that feels like nothing else. If you love metal, comedy, or just games with real personality, this one’s a cult classic for a reason
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Brutal Legend isn't a good game" Liar, it's actually sick.
positive · AI labelView post →This game is reviewed best in two stages: Practically: This game is a love letter to metal. The culture, the history, the striation, and features numerous standout cameos of storied fame from halls of metal itself. Also with Tim Curry. Mechanically: This game is super fun to play and fairly well constructed, the only gripe I have is that the RTS segments seem a bit awkward in control. If any metal listening game player out there hasn't played this then you owe yourself some quality…

neutral · AI labelView post →warning for some spoilers(??) honestly if youre into metal you just HAVE to play this game, as its literally a love letter to the entire scene. its crazy to think this gem originally came out back on the xbox 360 and it passed so much time since, but the atmosphere still holds up perfectly the quantity of bands that made it into the game is just insane as well (over 100 tracks from 75 different bands and artists). blasting through the map in the car while bands play at full volume gives you…

positive · AI labelView post →A gimmicky but complete product. At first glance I thought this kind of game would be best enjoyed as a more linear and direct experience because where I thought the game shined were in the fire sequences and the combat situations. But as I indulged more into this tiny world created revolving around heavy metal, a unique thing with distinct characteristics, and seeing these same characteristics being applied in every context and present in every miniscule aspect of the game, it made me…

neutral · AI labelView post →don't normally review but with the passing of Tim curry and a tall margarita felt the need to point out this good game, not great but defiantly good if you love metal and can get through a mid but passable rts you'll find a really beautiful world and some of the coolest voice acting with one of the best soundtracks in gaming so here's to Lemmy Ozzy and Tim thanks for the memories.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Next game I'm playing through.... Brutal Legend on Xbox 360! Playing this, cuz when I played Tokyo Mirage Sessions, I was wishing it was a game that was more like THIS. (Haven't played it at that point) So far I'm loving it, this game is kinda excellent 👌👌👌
positive · AI labelView post →Brütal Legend is most memorable for its atmosphere. The whole game is built around heavy rock and metal: the music, the world, the characters, and even the weapons. The humor is also good, especially if you enjoy a slightly absurd style and references to rock culture. At first, it seems like a regular third-person action game, but later it unexpectedly starts mixing combat with strategy. The idea is interesting, but the strategy sections won’t appeal to everyone. Controlling your troops can be…

And GOD ABOVE the sound track to this game... <3 All of it to the respective factions, Ironheade, Drowning doom and The Tainted Coil. More than enough for everyone. And plenty for those who are new to the world of heavy metal who dont quite know where to dip their toes into.
