What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 258 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (22,994 of 25,840 positive).
Players praise the game's humor and voice acting, especially for fans of Rick and Morty. [1][2][3] Some find the gameplay repetitive and the comedy wears thin over time. [4][5][6] A few report game-breaking bugs that hinder progress. [7]

The game is great fun, but it has a game breaking issue that the devs are seemingly not interested in addressing - I say that because there is not even a way to report a bug for this game on Steam, not even on the devs own website. The game breaking issue is that you lose the ability to equip and use all of your hard-earned weapon upgrades after a certain scene well into the game. It is unavoidable, it happens to …

I actually had a great time with the game. I needed something to just turn my brain off to, and this did the job. The humor, the character designs, the gameplay, it's all great. Straight up single player adventure with no multi-player or microtransactions and that is why I will praise and support this game. Looking forward to High On Life 2.

High On Life is the kind of game you boot up when your brain wants a snack, not a full meal. The jokes come flying fast some land perfectly, others politely miss but the overall vibe stays fun. The combat is simple in a good way, easy to pick up for a quick session when you just want to relax and shoot weird things. It’s not trying to be deep; it’s just trying to make you laugh, and honestly, it succeeds more often …

You can buy this game but you can't buy a sense of humor. I pity the people who do not think this game is funny as heck, to each their own I guess. While the combat is basically what you'd typically expect from a FPS game, the real selling point is the humor and heart from the people who worked on this game Overall 9/10 experience, encountered some bugs during my playtime but none of them were game-breaking. Writing …

A very mid game, which is a passing grade for recommendation. The gameplay is fine, a standard first person shooter with all the regular bells and whistles - collectibles, platforming, backtracking, upgrades, jetpacks, etc. The whole niche of this game - the jokes - rarely land though. Like sometimes I register that it's supposed to be funny, but its rarely actually funny. A lot of it is just gross out "humor". A …

86% of the 258 Steam reviewers we collected recommend High On Life. The complaint that keeps coming up: gameplay becomes repetitive and boring over time. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
High on Life received "mixed or average reviews" by critics and "generally favorable" by users according to review aggregator website Metacritic. The game's crude and absurdist humor proved polarizing. In a positive review, IGN called it "an irreverent, absurd shooter that manages to shine with its outrageous humor, silly setting and story", while Eurogamer criticized that the writing "too often settles into edgelord cynicism and the same tedious, punchdown humour as South Park." The Guardian noted that "the line between entertaining and excruciating here is down to how you feel about listening to a game-length version of Rick and Morty's Interdimensional Cable ad-libs". 60 of 490 · most liked firstI reviewed High on Life 2, which looks and feels like it got carved down to a sliver of what it was planned to be. Some nice ideas and a better script are held back by softlocks, unimproved gameplay, and the fact it's half a game. Read here: www.thejimquisition.com/post/high-on...

neutral · AI labelView post →An excellent game from the co-creator of Rick and Morty, so if you’re going to play it, expect humor similar to the show.. lots of nonsense and some darker jokes and scenes, although still funny. One of the coolest aspects is that the entire game revolves around obtaining talking guns with different types of ammo and special attacks while defeating intergalactic alien drug traffickers as you work as a bounty hunter.. and honestly, the guns are really cool and charismatic, each with its own…

However, the guns and gameplay quickly become repetitive and aren’t very satisfying for a first-person shooter game. positive · AI labelView post →I can say, with some confidence, that High On Life 2 is the best game I've ever played in which the actual, no screwing around John Waters voices an alien who runs a Spirit Halloween in space. www.avclub.com/high-on-life...
positive · AI labelView post →The best game for people who don’t have time. Maximum nonsense per minute. You drop into an adventure for 20 minutes, talk to a gun, ignore a psycho knife, watch enemies tell each other to frak off, and leave. Absolute fire.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have mixed feelings. High On Life is a game that relies heavily on its writing, but if you're not a fan of the Rick & Morty "everyone sounds awkward" style of humour, there's not much else to be found here. I ended up using Gus for most of the game because JB Smoove had the least annoying voice.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, people who dont take their time in exploring or dont care about environment exploring will likely not enjoy the game much because its a big part of it imo

neutral · AI labelView post →Once the comedy wore off there wasn't a lot left to this game. Bosses provide a challenge but the repetitive gameplay loops make this a bore to play. I have no intention to return to this game after I finish it. It's not a bad game by any means, it just gets boring after a while.

positive · AI labelView post →I didn't like this game very much This is a very generic shooter. The upgrades, the traversal, the guns, none of it is anything special. All of the gameplay is by the books generic and forgettable. The shooting especially feels disappointing. There's a lack of visual feedback when you pull the trigger and it makes the guns feel un-impactful. There's 5 of them in total with each having a special power. Great variety in theory, but because of the lack of feedback stated earlier, they all still…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When is the last time you actually laughed when playing a game? I've enjoyed this more than I should have, based on the cartoony looks and bright colours, but....and it's one of those 'buts' that needs a big B for a number of reasons, other than the fantastic aesthetics. The Good Stuff 1. It's actually an enjoyable shooter and will challenge even seasoned FPS players. 2. neutral · AI labelView post →Got to the bug on the 2nd boss, Krubis. Followed workarounds I saw on the internet and they didn't work. I'm not spending money on a game that has been out for 3 years and still has bugs that ruin the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →High on Life feels like someone gave Rick and Morty unlimited budget and access to aliens, guns, and questionable life choices. Your guns never stop talking. The enemies never stop talking. The story is ridiculous, the humor is either the funniest thing you've ever heard or a crime against humanity and I spent way too much time listening to random NPC conversations instead of playing the game. 10/10. Lost brain cells, gained happiness.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought the game because I saw countless videos on youtube and thought it looked fun. Turns out the only real content this game has is stoner humor. Gameplay loop is boring. There really isn't much here. Couldn't bring myself to finish it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: Funny and creative at first, but the constant fourth wall breaking and self mocking kills immersion and makes the game feel pointless the longer you play. That said, I still recommend it. It is worth experiencing, and others may not have the same reaction I did. This game is fun at first. The voices, the satire, everything clicked. It was hilarious, and the gameplay mechanics were genuinely enjoyable. For a while, it felt fresh and entertaining. The problem is that it never really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I gave this game a try and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. As someone who's a fan of Sci-fi and the "dumb" dark humor, I have to say Squanch Games managed to fill the void in the game genre. High on life is Doom-like FPS game with platforming and a bit of explorations elements. What makes this game really unique is the comedy that is incorporated into it. Gameplay The combat is fun and each weapon is providing different kind of special abilities. The gun selection is rather small,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun action combat and an all-star cast of professional comedian voice actors make this worth every minute. Once you invest a couple of hours and pick up your first few upgrades you'll start to see that this isn't your typical FPS - each new tool dramatically changes combat and gives a little Metroidvania-like expansion of the world. The game's rewards come in the form of the extremely entertaining dialogue and writing, which will appeal to any fan of adult animation - you'll recognize…
