Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 210 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,871 of 4,370 positive).

Devs please let me fix your game for you in two incredibly easy steps. 1. Make oxygen not require stairs 2. Make roofs braindead easy It really hurts to downvote this game but Im hoping it makes the devs see this review. This game has a ton of promise, music, story, vibes, gameplay is all on point here. Except for the aforementioned issues. Building stairs for the oxygen tanks looks terrible, and feels like Im being …

It's alright. Despite the screenshots and store tags hinting at some sort of a Stronghold / They Are Billions style gameplay, the primary rule of the game restricts a lot of building freedom: each block is as strong as it is tall. That means you don't get to make fancy expansive castles; you're going to want awkwardly tall and thin skyscraper walls blocking off tiny chokepoints, and rickety towers designed to hold …

Cataclismo is so close to being perfect, but it falls just shy. Unlike most RTS where you grow and grow and grow, expanding across a massive landscape, The Kingdom of Hogard is a ruined, tiny remnant of it's former glory. Maps are small and your troops are few, but the enemy is numerous. Each piece of wall matters, and it's building system is completely modular, often compared to Lego Bricks. There are multiple …

It's an ok game on sale, but not full price. The campaign is okayish, but feel rushed in the later missions. It feels like they took the time to present all the mechanics, units and building pieces and somewhere down the line they realized that they should end the story in 3 missions. Wish it was a bit more fleshed out and had more missions to learn about the story. There are a few units and the diversity is …

In my opinion this is the best tower defence/resource management game I have played to this day. PROS: -Well optimized game, runs really well. -Very well done building system, almost limitless freedom. -Amazing rewind system to go back to any point a new building is built (or manual saves). -Troops have good pathfinding and work really well (also amazing design to give buffs like +crit chance when above 5 meters to …

It just got an expansion DLC, so the game is on sale.

This is an incredibly neat game with some fascinating and very satisfying building mechanics, where you build your defensive structures brick by brick, and build huge elaborate castles like Lego. neutral · AI labelView post →I've held back on giving this a positive review because the game has received very little meaningful free content or updates since its full release last year, which is something it really needed. Releasing a paid DLC at nearly the price of the discounted base game—while the full base price stays high and isn’t worth it at that point—after more than a year of silence really rubs me the wrong way. Also, the paid DLC seemingly doesn't add anything other than add new gamemode(so no new units,…

I think it’s because at the end of the day, it's a very shallow game. It provides everything you hope for but it gets the same very fast. So far, I have only played the story mode. I will update with it’s endless mode. Things that it does well: Base and economy building Tower defense / hoards at the wall gameplay Has an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought Cataclismo on its 1.0 release, and ended up playing it until like 6am, utterly transfixed by the building mechanics, how it's kinda tower defense, but every defensive structure must be build brick by brick as if you're playing a strategy game with Lego.
positive · AI labelView post →I really want to like this game but I find the creation and organising of economy and defensive structures to be fiddly, tedious and unsatisfying. The pleasure in these games comes from devising clever solutions, but there is too much friction in the process here for it to be enjoyable. Also, yes, the stairs for oxygen collectors feels like a wind-up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →29. Cataclismo Hooded Horse keep publishing games that suck me in for hours on end, and this one had me fascinated with it's building mechanics, it's sort of tower defense where you have to build your defensive structures brick by brick, and the higher you build the more reinforced they get.

He usually covers one game at a time and tons more of them than I can keep up with, so I was happy to see which ones turned out to be favorites. :) Cataclismo I have played, and its honking brilliant, but the others are new to me. Rogue Command and Diplomacy is Not an Option look really interesting.

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the devs do a really good job in creating the building gamplay, where you get to construct everything bricks by bricks, and rewarding you for doing so (taller buildings have more health, troops stand in certain height and position gains extra benefits, etc). What really frustrating is its difficulty, unlike other games in the same genre, higher difficulties not only increase the number of enemies, their health and damage, but also reduce day…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this could have been something truly special but after 20hrs, I've walked away and here's why. The art style in the game, story, and general 'sim' part of the game is done exceedingly well. You can feel the struggle, the hopelessness, and the resolve that pushes through the muck of the dark woods and fetid swamps. Working against that, however, is some pretty awful voice acting that can't decide if it wants to be latin-influenced or not. Depending on whos talking its "Ho-gar" or…

neutral · AI labelView post →In my eternal yearning for another They Are Billions, Cataclismo had long festered in my backlog; a half-built fortress waiting to be pieced together as I greedily munched on scrap of patch-note after scrap of patch-note. Arriving late to the celebrations, delayed by wrist injury and RSI-compatible mouse, I found a curious amalgamation of ideas and undeniably beautiful art, a feast for the senses wrapped around a somewhat clunky skeleton of colony-building and swarm defense. I tinkered with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cataclismo just came out in 1.0, and I'm not far into it yet but it's neat so far, a tower defense game where you build your defensive structures block by block, it's like playing with Legos store.steampowered.com/app/1422440/...

positive · AI labelView post →While the game is built mostly around siege defence and save scumming, its a very fun game imo. The story is also pretty good, and the campaign is pretty challenging especially Defense of Hogar. However, what I like the most about the game is that buildings can strategically be placed and "combined" with other structures. For example you can place Oxygen Pumps on certain buildings like the citadel and barracks. You can stack Shacks together into a condo of some sort. With enough creativity you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's such a shame, its the kind of game I just want to love, and the genre is right up alley. b Its just too time consuming, especially since the time is spent building things that are mostly not that interesting, creative or fun. I love reving the eco engine but that's a small part of the game and the only one I enjoy. I feel like I'm halfway into the game and I'm just exhausted of losing and having to rebuild and replan. I don't even know if I can fault the developers, they have implemented…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the resource management is too intense and doesn't let you actually enjoy the "tower defense" / "base defense" part - that just basically amounts to strength via stacking as high as you can go. wonderful potential just needs some balancing to be enjoyable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Liked the concept but found the realisation of it a little dry. The city management gives you very little to work with but keeps bottlenecking so I only found it frustrating. Didn't enjoy the building - you have to make walls and towers accessible for units and then you need to consider height and protection from the rain so I spent a lot of time realising I'd messed up the design and having to tear it down and as hordes just pile at you the layout of your defences only matters so much - you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is underrated and I hope it gets the love it deserves. Not perfect, but you can't get this gameplay from other games. The allure of this game is the ability to lay down massive but intricate defenses at the drag of a mouse. Of course your are weak at the start, but resources start to pour in exponentially if your smart, and then you slather down stone walls like hot butter on toast. It becomes tedious to build structures and supports but the game almost becomes a puzzle at this point…

neutral · AI labelView post →Story and strategy games can go both ways. They can add immense depth and connective tissue, or they can become annoying and confusing filler. Cataclismo unfortunately falls into the second category… at least for me. This could be saved by interesting and fun gameplay, but... it's not. Building something that looks decent takes too long, and then you just watch it crumble so you can rebuild it again. Maybe it would become fun if I stuck with it a bit longer, but life is short and games are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought I would be interested because I like building games and lego, as well as the general concept of base building tower defense. However, the implementation ends up being really tedious. Everything you build needs to have a walkable path from the ground to the top. Also, every structure you build is a pillar. There is no concept of walls and roof, you are just building giant cubes of stone, a staircase up to it, and a bunch of the same unit buff structures along all your walls. And boy is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the combination of defense building and city management. Custom community controls work well on the Steam Deck. Building large wall sections is a little tedious.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such an odd game. On the one hand, a nice premise around building your base, which can be destroyed brick by brick, and the usual TD-style defence. On the other, it has you trapsing around maps Diablo style, building bridges and performing basic actions. Overall it just doesn't stick the landing. It's too fiddly, the real-time aspects cause more aggravation than they should, enemy variety isn't good either. If they'd just focused on the TD part of the design and fleshed that way out, around…

positive · AI labelView post →What bugs me most is how the voice actors speak in English, but anything related to the lore is in Spanish(?) and pronounced in such a profound different way than English. It just gets really annoying to hear entire sentences in English and then suddenly the lore names aren't pronounced in an English accent. It makes no sense. This game would've been better off being entirely in Spanish with subtitles. This one thing made me entirely disinterested in the campaign story cause it keeps coming up.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a beautiful mess. RTS, Tower Defense, Colony Sim, Base Builder, and more. The game hints at brilliance, the only problem is like a brilliant child who has signed up for everything it has ended up being a B- student when it could have been an A+ if it had taken fewer electives. Each area of the game the different pieces don't always fit together well and feel disjointed. There are certain areas of the tech tree you just never get too. The well built buildings you see in clips are…

The art style and voice acting are great . I enjoyed the story though it was not the selling point. This game shines in it's design. Its great fun and surprisingly complex with its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Big thumbs up on this one with one big caveat: this game is made way harder because of the things it doesn't go out of its way to teach you. Now maybe you have experience with this sorta horde defense/base builder type game (me personally I have more of an RTS background) or you just like a game you can teach yourself so that's not an issue. The number one thing that's vital to learn which the game doesn't teach you is how to ramp up your economy quickly and efficiently so that you'll be able…

There's some kind of blueprint system, but a bunch of the campaign missions don't let you use it, and most of the time you need a custom wall to fit the shape of the map anyways.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, the lore is great, gameplay is great (especially building mechanics) However, a scripted loss in one of the missions is unfair. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The style and the UI are pretty good, yet the game still lacks depth in its systems and level design. It sucks that there is so little to learn and gain in each level that I wish the levels didn't end at all. Also the game allows you to use the steam's workshop so early that it almost ended the way i wanted to solve things myself. It became kind of boring because problems I encountered could be solved too easily with the help of the workshop, which was kind of a bummer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game is boring, resource management sucks. unclear build paths. no frontline units, no ladders, unit variety is lacking. art direction and voice acting was good but not enough to carry the gameplay loop of build wall put archer on wall.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game idea is great, would love to keep building my castle in so much detail. The problem is the enemy spam is ridiculous. You barely have enough resources to make 5 archers, the enemy attacks from 3 directions with dozens of units, no freaking way you can defend. Gave up on it quite fast.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyed the campaign! City builder levels are especially fun - although I did find it hard sometimes to toggle difficulty between "I won this level easily" and "I'm so rushed I definitely won't win" ~ I couldn't always find the "this is hard but doable" sweet spot. But overall, I was glad I bought and played the game - nice work devs.
