What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 255 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,567 of 4,206 positive).
Many players find the game addictive and compelling despite its flaws. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game feels unfinished or too short, with limited content. [4][5][6] Several players praise the developers for active updates and listening to feedback. [7][8][9]

As of right now, this game simply does not work. The more you unlock, the worse the game gets. And no matter the stage of a save, building actual synergies is almost entirely luck, with very little strategy, due to the limited inventory. This game could still turn it around but as it stands, I cannot recommend a game that sabotages itself the more you play it.

This game has some very absorbing gameplay, but if you're thinking of getting it, you should know it just doesn't feel finished. Two levels and a PvP mode aren't enough. I know there's more content on the way to the full release, but as it stands, it's kind of an unfulfilling experience. After unlocking the second level, it seems like a third level (at least) would also unlock to fight the Demon King. There isn't …

Genius strategy roguelike, its the best of its kind in my opinion. You're constantly trying to compact your inventory by collecting items in pairs, so that you can combine them to get both in one inventory slot. It almost feels like Rummy the card game in this way, there is something cathardic about that. Those combined items typically form the base stats of your build. Then from shops you can find, you purchase …

At first glance, barebone graphics (even for pixel art) and auto-battler are a big turn-off. But as I dived in, Il discovered a tight gameplay with a lot of fun combo and balanced builds I kinda became obsessed with it. Disclaimer : At the moment the multiplayer seems unhealthy (I don't care, I'm still having fun) Edit : one of my champion reached Pantheon. Quite Satisfying :)

The bad news is that this game is incredibly RNG-dependent, even for the genre. The good news is that the runs are brief enough to prevent that from ruining whole sessions. I find it oddly compelling, though it could definitely use some quality-of-life features.
Summarised from 34 of the 313 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
78% of the 255 Steam reviewers we collected recommend He is Coming. The complaint that keeps coming up: heavy RNG dependence can feel unfair. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

60 of 338 · most liked first[Disclosure - game provided by publisher] Hey folks, added He Is Coming to my curator page. It's a deceptively simple roguelike auto-battler RPG which I've been enjoying immensely and can only describe as infuriatingly compelling, I can't stop playing it. store.steampowered.com/app/2824490/...

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really want to like this game but the screen shakes give me huge headaches. Please add a feature to remove screen shakes so I can support the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Though it was a PvE only game turns out it was PvE, and PvP where things are balanced around the PvP aspect of the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game caught my interest when I first saw it. But with the dev putting a heavy focus on the "PvP" aspect and just neglecting what is supposed to be the main mode, it's looking like the game will go a more "buff and nerf things because pvp lmao" which seems to also affect the singleplayer part. And speaking of the main mode... I like it. It's pretty much a roguelite deck builder, and it's pretty fun overall. As for Kingmaker? Unfun. Majorly so. You either have to go with "The Meta:tm:", or…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In case you missed it, I added He Is Coming to my curator page. Word of warning though, it's another Hooded published game, and god damn they really seem to put out games that I can't put down.
positive · AI labelView post →I’m liking it. I have a suggestion though. Make the player avatar a paper-doll that reflects the equipment they have on. It would add so much more character to builds, while retaining the old school atmosphere.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game starts strong, has nice visuals and sound for people who are into pixel graphics, nostalgia is properly invoked. After a short while, slowly the frustration is creeping in because basically you just run around with WASD and try to find a bunch of items that synergize well. You try to finish the challenges but very often that is absolutely not possible, especially on hard or very hard because the runs are also just too short and you have literally no influence over anything. You cant…

positive · AI labelView post →I really enjoy the core game loop, but it feels like a crapshoot in just hoping for one of the 3 or 4 combinations that can beat the boss I'm facing that day. I can't recommend this game because it feels like you're just at the whims of the RNG, often realizing a run is dead in the first day because I haven't been able to find anything that synergizes. In most other roguelikes you have multiple ways of manipulating your luck to get items you need-- shop rerolls, rerolls, banishing items, and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →He is Coming just passed 100,000 copies sold, less than 2 weeks after its Early Access launch! It's been wonderful to see so many players enjoying the game. Huge congratulations to developer @ChronocleGames, it's an honor to serve as your publisher!
neutral · AI labelView post →I wish I could leave a "kind of." The game is fine, with an interesting premise, but if you want any real gameplay you have to play their busted version of asynchronous multiplayer and it's just not good. Unfortunately, they have abandoned the single player part of the game, so once you complete it you're stuck battling asynch cheaters, min-maxers, and tryhards instead of exploring and trying to make creative or fun builds work.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a personal preference, but I don't much care for the way the basic battles provide no challenge. They feel like filler while you push the RNG button to try to compile a build. This isn't a game where you fight to grow strong and prepare for difficult end of stage bosses, it's a game where you open treasure chests and hope to compile a comp that can beat the boss at the end of the level. Because it's all auto battle, I feel more like a spectator than a player. The decisions to make…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Likewise when they sent me a copy of He Is Coming, which is a very minimalist roguelike autobattler kinda game, but had me completely sucked in. Perfect game to play on the Steam Deck, and I kept going for one more run. I've sank dozens of hours into this already.
positive · AI labelView post →He Is Coming is the exact kind of game I'm obsessed with recently. Got quite a few hours in this one myself and biiig vouch!! Hooded Horse is on some good good shit lately. 🔥🔥 Literally can't see this game without yelling about how good it is. 😅
positive · AI labelView post →For me the game lacks depth, you just go around and pick up good items. The only thing you need to do is pick good items and consider the boss you will fight. Mostly its RNG, I cleared both maps in three hours, I had fun while playing but I feel uninspired to keep "grinding" the same thing over and over. Its simply not mentally engaging enough compared to similar games and for this price
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I almost love it. Everything is excecuted to perfection, except for the length of the game. It feels really short and easy. At this moment, there are two levels (a third one is coming). I would've wished for a longer gameplay, as you never really get to have fun with your combos. I bought this at the price tag of 9,99 euro which for me is borderline too expensive for the amount of content. Finished all I can (two levels) in under 4 hours. I did by no means rush it. Had a bunch of time to try…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →'He is Coming' sold 100K copies in less than 2 weeks. Also on Game Pass.
neutral · AI labelView post →He Is Lacking To summarize a long-winded review, He Is Coming is overpriced for what it offers players, especially when compared to other roguelikes (doubly so because it is in early access). However, even without the price tag the gameplay loop offers players very little agency in the limited amount of content it does provide. If your map layout and loot luck is bad, you will lose and there is nothing you can do about it except try again. The Good There is a clear design…

positive · AI labelView post →THE GAME AWARDS TOMORROW @ 7:30pm EST HE IS COMING TO GEOFF US ALL.
neutral · AI labelView post →It´s ok. The premise is brilliant and starting a new run is an easy click. Actually playing it is the problem. On the one side restrictions are good and a learning curve exists. The items themselves are fun and some cool combinations are possible. Unlocking the compendium is motivational and good to try out different builds. But is the game itself fun? Sure I can beat the game on very hard modes, but 4/5 runs I give up on the first boss. It´s easier to reset than to try and outplay bad…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I so want to like this game. The core mechanics are fun, the runs are snappy, a loss does not feel bad and it has the "just one more run" feel. What kills this game for me is the pure rng without means to really mitigate it and bring the run under your control. The fairly recent addition of a single slot backpack helps, but it is like a band-aid over a gaping wound. Here is the problem. Item combos (not sets, though those are impacted as well) need multiple components to function, with the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe I have cooled on roguelikes or perhaps I don't like the autobattler thing but I thought this was too small with too few choices to be interesting. I love Slay the Spire and I like Bilatro. The adventure theme of this and the graphics are cool. Autobattling feels like it removes too many choices and doing well and having fun seemed too dependent on the random map layout + the random available rewards

neutral · AI labelView post →He is Coming Look it's not that kind of game it's just the name. This auto-battler roguelike is incredibly addictive. Finding equipment combos that allow for each run to be different, and learning about how to unlock new pieces kept me coming back for more! store.steampowered.com/app/2824490/...

neutral · AI labelView post →A really good game with surprising depth: + Tons of gear to mix and match, lots of strategies. + Easy to play, hard to beat. + An absolute boatload of in-game achievements. + Gets improved weekly, sometimes daily - excellent dev attention. This game came out of nowhere and quickly earned a spot on my favorites list - I highly recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is barely any progression... i like the idea, i like the style, but there is barely any meta progression and i feel like that the new items getting unlocked makes it harder and harder to actually get a decent build going, especially since you unlock like 20 items but only get the option to block 2 for the run...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried the demo for He is Coming and it's pretty cool
positive · AI labelView post →Hey folks, tonight I'm gonna play a little HE IS COMING for you all, 'cos I was accosted by a Hooded Horse who pushed another game into my hands that I can't put away. Come, join me! www.twitch.tv/caseyexplosion
positive · AI labelView post →I’m a roguelike fan and I don’t need flashy graphics, so I expected this to be right up my alley. Unfortunately, it leans far too heavily on RNG, the gameplay feels overly simple, and most importantly it just isn’t fun. It ends up feeling more like pulling a lever on a slot machine than making meaningful decisions. I can’t recommend it, even to other roguelike or deckbuilder fans.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is pretty great. For PvP the RNG is pretty nutty but once you learn to read the leaderboard and check your upcoming opponents you can game it a little bit. There are nasty meta-builds out there but they can be taken down with some fun jank-style builds. Solo games or PvP games can last 3-5 minutes to an hour+ if you really start reading the map well to find a merchant or rare spawn with a few tics left of the day/night. I recommend it for sure but I won't lie... there's a lot of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Anyway, that's He Is Coming, a game that's maddeningly compelling, devious in its simplicity. A hearty thumbs up! If you want more recommendations, might I suggest following my Steam Curator page? I'll be a hazard to your wishlist. store.steampowered.com/curator/2834...
positive · AI labelView post →Pretty interesting rogue-like. My my only suggestion is you can't switch weapons deep into a run because you gather oils and an edge and you lose all that when you switch. So if I find a powerful weapon later it feels bad because I lose all the upgrades on my earlier weapon. Just switch it to where oils and edge transfers. Edit: Also. THERE IS NO WORSE FEELING IN THIS GAME than accidently switching out your weapon and ruining your run. Please add an undo feature for this.

positive · AI labelView post →It's Friday! What is everybody playing this weekend? For me, it will be a mix of Donkey Kong Bananza and He Is Coming.
neutral · AI labelView post →Bottom line: This was absolutely worth the $20 price tag. I have no regrets. After completing the campaigns and getting all the achievements, however, the drive to play is greatly diminished. I got about 100 hours of content before it dropped from a daily play to a few hours every couple weeks. While it could benefit from a little more polish in some places, there is nothing that needs more polish. The challenge is in planning for the next combat. When you first start playing, with no…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoy this game, but you basically play this game like it's an achievement hunter game, rather than an actual strategy game. There's way too much RNG for you to have a consistent strategy, but it is fun and runs are pretty quick.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →He is Coming has quickly become one of my favorites of the genre. I really enjoy the build diversity and theory crafting aspect, something that many other rougelikes/lites overlook with more reliance on action or skill-based gameplay. The mechanics almost feel like playing MtG with battle start effects, turn start effects, effects when you lose all your armor or half your health, remove certain status, etc. and I'm really enjoying trying different things out each run Runs only last 15 minutes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really had no idea when I brought home this little critter that it would grow overnight and devour me. In all seriousness, this is a perfect game for when you just want a bit of frustratio.... er... FUN! yea, fun. I don't know how many runs in total I've played, but my more than 50 hours played, in a game which can be finished, in my case, almost always in defeat, in less than 10 minutes. And 10 minutes is a GOOD run. I was so overwhelmed with delight the first time I won a game in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →He is coming. You only have so much time (steps) to grab items, defeat foes, increase your power, trade, etc. Items are everything, there is no leveling up. Combine items that synergize in powerful ways to defeat bosses, or fellow players. This game is still being developed, they intend to release 1 or 2 maps. The maps have unique tile sets that telegraph locations of interest. I highly recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has a strong concept that unfortunately gets completely thrown out the windows with the semi-pvp Kingmaker mode. It just becomes a frustrating repetitive mess. Far too much RNG to sink that much time into just to lose continuously to broken mechanics and cheese builds. Gaining crowns for skins is chore and there's very little engagement after the first couple hours. Hope more comes down the road but as is, it's more frustrating than fun after a few runs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played quite a bit of this game, off and on throughout early access, usually a run or two during my lunch breaks at work. Its good fun, has a great soundtrack, quick to get a run in, quick to restart, fairly steady stream of unlockable items to find.... Its just a good roguelike. The game used to be (and still can be once you've unlocked hard mode) soul-crushingly difficult and heavily RNG dependent. For reference, I didn't clear the first stage, Woodlands, until I had like 7 hours of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The more I play He is Coming, the more I wish this Status system was even remotely reasonable for a TTRPG. I will say though, this game made me realize how much harder I could have dug my heels in on removing damage types from Vagabond.

positive · AI labelView post →Price tag is insane for such a short game loop ngl. A run might take you 8-10 minutes to actual completion of one of the TWO campaigns. Yeah you can always play again to unlock things because it's a roguelike but honestly I just wish the runs were longer. Edit: Changed to positive - Game loop is short, but I guess that's part of the charm.

neutral · AI labelView post →The gameplay loop is easy to learn, but difficult to master. A unique art style and catchy 8 bit tune really set this game apart for me. I also really appreciate the hidden objectives laid out in the compendium. That makes unlocking all of the items way easier!! He is Coming is one of my new favorites and I highly recommend it!!! :3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been obsessively playing a game called "He Is Coming" and - despite it's name - it's a delightful lil roguelike pixel game where you build a set and go through a boss rush gauntlet with whatever build you manage to put together...my autism/ocd brain is PLEASED.

positive · AI labelView post →I like the visuals for the game, as well as the sound design, and I feel like there's maybe something interesting in certain aspects of the design here. Unfortunately, even with the changes made by the developers over the past year or so, there's just not much of a game here, and I mean that in multiple ways. In terms of player agency, there isn't much. You walk around the overworld map, collecting items and running into NPCs to try and skew the run in your favour. The actual combat of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is worth maybe $5. I've played a lot of roguelikes and games like this. He is Coming is incredibly shallow and uninteresting for the price. Honestly, normally I write longer reviews, but the game at this point just sucks. The core loop is not engaging. There's too little control over your build, so, to compensate, it's the same basic enemies over and over with 3 bosses, the first two have maybe a single, easily negatable special ability by picking up any of the counters available on…
