Caveblazers
Developer Deadpan Games
Caveblazers is a 2017 video game developed by Deadpan Games and published by Yogscast Games. Described as an "action-focused roguelike platformer", players in Caveblazers defeat enemies across runs of procedurally-generated dungeons to accumulate items, weapons, and potions with random effects. The developers described the design of the game as aiming to "move away from the simplistic combat systems" of other… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

I do really like this game but i cant justify giving it a positive review, i feel that the difficulty spike is too immense for the game to be fun, and to overcome that difficulty you have to get lucky with available builds to get far. if you like hard games this is great, if not, id not recommend it. pixel style is great, rogue-lite elements and unique playstyles make it stand out. i think that mostly the hard …

The beginning is lot of deaths, in the mid game is a lot of deaths, but in the final part it's over 9000 deaths. The solution is uninstall or manage to create a good build that depend on luck to create. It is actually an awesome game.

I love this game to bits. I remember playing this game for the first time years ago on my friend's crappy HP computer, because this was the only game it could really run. I've been playing Caveblazers for maybe over a decade on multiple different platforms, and have just never gotten tired of it. The simplicity of the items, and how you can synergize weapons and abilities to get some crazy runs, and how easy it is …

This is one of my comfort games, anytime i don't know what to play I come back to this game and it never disappoints. If you like rougelites you should definitely consider getting this game.

for some reason i still find myself jumping into this game nearly everyday even if its just to kill a few minutes or sinking a couple hours in its always fun and i don't think ill ever stop playing this one.

Critics, per Wikipedia
According to review aggregator OpenCritic, 60% of critics recommend the game, with several critics praising the game for its roguelike features and comparing it favorably to the 2008 platform game Spelunky. Destructoid praised the game for its controls, "excitingly difficult" gameplay, and "dramatically different" gameplay loop. Touch Arcade recommended the game for its difficulty, "faster tempo", and increased levels of loot. Rock Paper Shotgun highlighted the "cruel" difficulty of the game as a "wonderful challenge", finding the gameplay's "tug of war between control and chaos" to be adequately balanced, although desired more variety "in the areas and the enemies met" and found the boss…

60 of 190 · most liked firstI was recently gifted a Steam Deck for Christmas! If you only had a budget of, let's say 50 bucks, what would you get?. My Steam library basically only consists of Witcher 3 and Spiritfarer. I also was gifted a Humble Bundle game for Batman Arkham Knight. I’m debating on getting Elden Ring and Cyberpunk (both without DLC). Marvel’s Spider-Man and FF7 Interograde also look like a good value right now for 40 bucks total. Edit, ended up doing the following: Becoming a Steam Family member…

Reason being many of these are cheaper ($5-10, sometimes even less) so you can try different genres, and these titles also tend to sip battery so you will get lots of gameplay time. Examples I have enjoyed, in no particular order- Animal Well Celeste Stardew Valley Vampire Survivors Caveblazers Balatro Slay the Spire

If the devs want a clean Leaderboard, just make a mode for Leaderboard. It's not everyone who plays a singleplayer game to brag about his/her skills.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I gave this game a good shot, but I didn’t really like it. The character classes were fine, and the core mechanics of combat and platforming were solid, but the experience felt tedious. It leans hard into a permadeath roguelike loop, with random perks, gods, and drops. The difficulty curve felt steep in a way that felt punishing more than rewarding. There’s a neat fantasy framing about delving deeper underground but tuns often ended before anything interesting could happen.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is for my completionist friends who want to complete the games they buy, even if the game isn't as great as you hoped. Do not touch this one. I have reached the final boss in the shrouded lands multiple times now, it's the last thing I have to beat in this game cuz I'm a completionist. However, I think now it's time to finally write my review. I can under no circumstances recommend this game. if you have played all the other big rogue-lite titles, and you're sitting on too much time,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Caveblazers: The object of the game is a treasure at the end of the cave. When you finally get to the end, it turns out that the "treasure" is a harem of bikinied women. The final boss is this goblin guy who spends his days raping them, and then when you defeat the boss, the women move into YOUR cave so that YOU can do the same. This is a roguelike game that otherwise has no story and was pretty fun, but the ending is just awful. I can't find anybody else talking about how terrible it is except…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I originally played Caveblazers back in late 2017 and found it to be a bit underwhelming, and didn't feel compelled to continue because of a few problems I couldn't put into words. Trying it again in 2025 I think I can more properly assess my issues with the game. Yeah, my first big problem is that playing with melee sucks. It's really easy to die in this game, so why take the risk? The best way to play is to lean on ranged weapons entirely to play it safe. However this gameplay is not…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is just kinda Mid, it takes some elements from other Rogue likes such as world generation in a manner similar to Spelunky but at the end of the day its just very standard gameplay. The final nail in the coffin is the boss fights because they have minimal replay value and there comes a point where they just aren't fun to encounter at all because you can't just attack the bosses; you have to wait for an opening and it kills the power fantasy that makes Rogue likes fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite its admittedly terrible name, Caveblazers is one of my favorite dungeon-delve rogue-likes I've played in quite some time. It has some of the usual problems in this genre - it's easy to have a run that just feels like a dead fish as you try to assemble a build out of the worst items you've ever seen in your life, certain builds and powers feel helpless against areas or bosses (I hope you didn't spent 8 levels investing in fire damage only to find everything in the capstone area is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buggy abandoned game. Don't buy it. Game is well designed, i love the graphics, theme, system of the game but there is some sort of bug exist. I encountered 2 of them (it's possible much more bug exist). They really make you want to shut your game down immediately. First one is i'm attacking an enemy but it doesn't die and it just stands there without moving. It's hp bar went to zero but its still... anyways. The bad part is i was in the arena mod something so i will go to next stage when…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Caveblazers is something I would describe like spelunky. Spelunky was already too hard for me and this game feels the same. It is VERY punishing. I guess I am not playing safe enough in these kinds of games, as I tend to die very quickly from full health all of a sudden. Anyway, the game is pretty fun and I like it more than Spelunky itself, it got a ton of different Items and perks, making the runs very unique depending on what you get. However it does have a lot of RNG to it, sometimes you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great action platform fighting adventure game ruined by two terrible design decisions. + Like the graphics. It is minimalist enough while still maintaining a degree of detail. + Music is very good - but same for every boss it seems. ++ Very hectic and tactical gameplay despite its simplicity. You get into some interesting melee fights. - Too bad it isn't rounded out by an interesting or even practical range mechanic. + Lots of items - but more on that in the negatives. -- Most one…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's a like a really bad, lanky surface version level of Vagante with some celeste movement mixed in
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly I know the Deck can run recent and current AAA titles but I generally have had just as much fun playing low-demand games like Stardew, Dead Cells, Caveblazers, etc.
positive · AI labelView post →This game is difficult but it is fun if you are looking for games like Rogue Legacy, Spelunky, or similar dungeon-diving games where you will die a lot. It was too tough for me, though.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing Caveblazers with friends is like crowding around an old HP Desktop during Computer Science in 2nd period and playing Gravity Run or Super Smash Flash with 4 people all on the same keyboard. The only difference is that you don't have to quickly alt+tab back to your Google Doc when Mr. Wang catches you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In short: Very challenging game. Very unforgiving. Level generation is laughable at best. Too much RNG dependence. Combat too clunky. Example: U can only shoot in very classic Nintendo style, enemies can shoot/move fluently in any direction and melee combat range is super short ranged which has huge risks for needless damage. (unless u unlock certain perks). If u like Spelunky's mechanics and punishment this game might be for you. I've played this game for 16 hours and that's as far as i can go…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Procedurally generated levels are a lazy way to add new experiences to a game. And i think that is what kills it for me. The poor random level design doesn't give you what you need to even make it beyond the first boss. This is one of those games you have to play over and over and over again to finally make it further. And that's likely going to be because you got lucky and a level generated in your favor to acquire the right items and health stats. Not for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In principle this is a game I should really like, but the lack of proper 360 degree aiming makes it unplayable for me. You can only aim in eight directions, which for ranged combat is super frustrating, It's really annoying to have a bat flying towards you but you can't hit it because you can only fire straight ahead or 45 degree up. It's a very odd design decision that for me just makes it feel really bad to play. While it has its problems, Noita does everything this game is trying to do so…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →probably the best 19 cent game ive ever bought.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the controls are so bad, i dont mind a challenge, but it feels impossible with this horrible control. wish i could use my mouse to aim. i hate it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →clunky, overpunishing, unrewarding, gameplay. npc that insults you for playing is not a fun, funny, quirky choice. it is genuinely some of the least fun i've ever had. attempting progression fully compromises any semblance of enjoyment.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such a good game. The design looks so simple, yet the game has an amazing gameplay and so much to it. It's not really easy either which makes it even better. Just a great game in general.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy unless its on sale! it goes on sale for less than a dollar more often than its off sale. Game is not worth more than a dollar, but its fun to pop in and play for short sessions. Very challenging so if you don't want a challenge don't play this. Its randomly generated so a lot of runs are gonna be entirely luck based.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A mix of Vagante and Risk of Rain. No matter how hard you squint your eyes it wouldn't look like Spelunky. So if you're craving for more Spelunky after playing Spelunky 2 for hundreds of hours it won't satisfy your itch. The procedural level generation is so random and the controls are so clunky and slippery it wouldn't take you long to realise that Caveblazers alas is not a true successor for one great roguelike.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Found the bosses a little too hard for my skills / taste, and melee combat feels hit and miss at times.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My Favourite Game 🎮 This #drawing is inspired by the Slasher perk from Caveblazers. This perk causes melee weapons to release powerful waves of energy. Using it makes feel like Roronoa Zoro. #Art #Gaming #Illustration #Roguelike @yogscastgames.bsky.social

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ luck when I played this, it took so much longer then it should to finish. Still very fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is underrated and definitely worth a look at the price. If Spelunky and Binding of Isaac had a baby, you'd get Caveblazers.
positive · AI labelView post →The game really falls off after the first hour or two. The combat is so clunky and there isn't even a purpose to engaging with the combat so why waste your time? Too much RNG and I don't think the level generation is very good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yes Very challenging, it can piss you off a lot, but it's very rewarding to push through the levels and win. Plays really well, no technical issues found. Beautiful graphics
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very enjoyable. I randomly discovered this game and it's truly a gem. The game is quite hard but it doesn't make me feel any frustrating. Instead, it encourages me to play more and more.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →CaveBlazers and Craftopia, both abandoned projects. For regretting playing.. Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. The game ruined PSO2 and I don't get why it's even called "PSO2" when it's more like a spin-off or sequel. Has nothing in common with the original PSO2.
negative · AI labelView post →local 4 players allowed.pls if you did it i would be happier.LOL
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Refunded as it's a blatant copy of Spelunky. It adds nothing to what was pretty much a perfect video game. This is only for those who aren't able to get a copy of Spelunky,,,that's it. Everything in it is copied from Spelunky...a complete rip off. Not even worth 68 pence.
