Necrosmith
Developer Alawar
A necromancer simulator. Assemble the dead using different body parts while upgrading your tower, combine the abilities of the different fantastic races to fight your way through the hordes of enemies and overrun the ’chosen ones’. To tell the truth, the dead are pretty, uhm, dumb. From the Steam store page

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 169 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,602 of 5,369 positive).
Players enjoy the creative unit-building and experimentation with body parts. [1][2][3] Many find the game grindy, especially early on or for achievements. [4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize the poor unit AI and lack of strategic depth. [7][8][9]

Would be a neutral if Steam allowed such ratings. I would recommend against this game, unless you are fine with grinding. I read reviews that said it needed grinding before it got fun, so when the game started out tough, I wasn't bothered. But no one said it would take around seven hours of grinding before it gets fun. Now, it's great once you get going, but I would have skipped this if I had known better. I look …

I think it’s an original game; I haven’t seen these kinds of necromancy mechanics before. It’s fun, but not without its issues. First, let me talk about the mechanics. You mix and match body parts to create new types. When you discover a valid recipe, it’s automatically added to your necromancer book; its mana cost decreases, and it gains extra stats like speed, damage, and armor. As long as you have the required …

Necrosmith Time Played: 18.1 Hours Last Played: 27th of October, 2025 Wanting to get some more Halloween gaming in what limited time I had left in the relevant month, I fired up this in the hopes the premise of reviving the dead would be a lightheartedly-spooky time. How did it fare? Yay: + Immediate delight was had on deploying my first skeleton, and watching it rove about whacking stuff. Absolutely a “Yeh-hey; …

Necrosmith is an inventive blend of light strategy, roguelite progression, and chaotic minion management wrapped in a tongue-in-cheek necromancy theme. Developed and published by Alawar, it places you in the role of a reclusive necromancer who sits inside a magically fortified tower while assembling an army of stitched-together undead creatures. On the surface, the game appears simple—build units, send them out, …

Interesting tower defense where you build your very own units from body parts. Sadly it's held back by several design flaws, which makes for a very unrefined gameplay experience. It's a bit of a mess and feels tedious to play. Conclusion: Not bad, but not great. 4/10. GOOD - Custom unit creation. - Exploration! Find loot, take over buildings that produce resources, destroy enemies and their bases. - Units moves …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like everything this company makes, it looks nice, but barely functions. No options, no control, make no mistake this game is an autobattler. Not a tower defense game, not and action game. Its actually closer to a rougelike Idle game than anything. Worst of all its one of those ULTRA LITE Rougelites, that kills you super fast and gives you a pile of garbage to make your next run easy, and is designed for success to be impossible until you go and lose over and over to buy a bunch of upgrades…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has loads of interesting ideas and the combinations for undeads are rather satisfying. Unfortunately the controls are really frustrating. Trying to get your minions to do what you want is like trying to herd cats. It's lilke a mix between an RTS and Vampie Survivors. But the RTS aspects of it are so convoluted that I never really got to the point where I had fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the price I thought it was very fun. So many different units, I'm not even sure that I saw them all. If you're going for the achievements it can get grindy. No matter how you look at it, it's a deal, especially when on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun idea held back by Sisyphean design choices. For what it's worth it was a fun little mindless game to start, but by the midgame the grinding becomes unbearable. And it's grinding just to return to the same place you died previously, no less. Skip it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kinda fun but the AI is terrible and will make you rip your hair out... but your only other choice is micromanaging a few seconds worth of gameplay into minutes
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dev rushed 1.0 and then immediately went on to Necrosmith 2. If you want this game, get necrosmith 2 instead. I can't recommend a game that doesn't currently have dev support.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game still needs polishing, but I guess the dev wanted to make money on a new project...Necrosmith 2. smh...

neutral · AI labelView post →They are not wrong when they say that the dead are dumb in the description of this game. But I don't fully put the blame for how bad this is squarely on the shoulders of terrible AI, there are other things that also contribute to this being almost unplayable. As first mentioned, the unit AI. Your units will move on their own throughout the world, completely skipping taking very important resource producing buildings like gold and iron mines, as well as crypts for body parts and temples for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the idea, horrible implementation. The AI is horrible, feels like you need to micro manage them all the time, leaving some at the base to defend doesn't work because you are either in full control or some spawn just wipes them all out. You get so many parts, i wish there was a way to auto-create specific units as soon as the parts are available. Also wish i could auto-sell some parts for mana generation Also wish there was a way to tell the units to defend the area around the base and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good idea destroyed by bad mechanics. You can only control one uni, which means, if the other are stupid it´s a pain and exactly thats it, build necros from parts, parts are random and upgrade after you died, if you give up, you loose, no save in between
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Plays more like an idle game and takes a while to create better units because of how expensive they are. Not really much to do gameplaywise and fully upgrading everything is also a long grind. Overall it's a meh.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Waiting for the sex update.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Necrosmith is a great game, it's lots of fun and has a really neat art style. The game play is interesting and in the early to mid-game there's so many different combinations of parts that work it's really interesting. Towards the end of the game you get a bit more limited as enemies get stronger and clearly superior combinations start to emerge. The biggest flaw with this game, and the thing holding back from an easy 10/10 for me is the lack of almost any AI for your troops. You can either…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun and replayable! Play for a while on your own to see what you like, then check out a guide to help with the unique combinations.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →really bad mechanics cant control more than 1 unit at a time easy to get swarmed if you get a bad roll of parts. wouldnt reccomend buying
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DON'T BUY THIS GAME I played this game for over 22 hours. I wanet to come back and play it again but there is no buttons in the interface that would allow me to start the game, only link to v2. I'm stuck with broken game that I can't refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Necrosmith 1 is a cool little tower defense game. Alawar strikes again with a banger. Wall World was amazing, Necrosmith is very similar in its pixel artstyle and progression of upgrades. The game is finite and depending on your luck and skill, you can complete it in a single run. But until then you'll have to grind for upgrades. Yes it gets a bit grindy but you will complete the game before maxing all upgrades. To be honest the upgrade costs need to be balanced, having to grind 30k+ gold,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting and enjoyable curious cool thing. Very good premise and atmosphere. However, the dragon that comes in at 15min to end your session is just peak bad game design. Fortunately, there is already a Necrosmith 2, so just go ahead and skip this 1st game.

I get to play the game before its release on March 26, thanks to Vicarious PR. See you Monday the 25th, 6am PDT/1pm GMT!

Thankfully, it has deeper combat, with a combo system. The in-run progression felt good with nice synergies for movement and combat abilities. Dodge felt a little off, but it may have been the heavy class I was playing. Did not get to try multiplayer and…
neutral · AI labelView post →Im gonna beat the game but boy do I hate it. Very little control, insane difficulty, necessary boring grind to even do basic thing. The game will essentially end whenever it wants, regardless of how many dudes you have (which you cant control) Very close to being a good game but still bad. The sequel is slightly better but still confusing and unnecessarily difficult. Would give it a neutral review if I could because its not terrible. Its just frustrating and poorly designed?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought it for $1.19 and feel like it was a bad purchase.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It reminds me a little of Vampire Survivors , idk why , very enjoyable, give it a try. And for the people complaining about it not being replayable, IT`S A 3 EURO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GAME!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Make monsters, kill things, unlock other things. It's fun for what it is.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Create an army of undeads using a mix of body parts. Discover builds giving the units a bit of a bonus, unlock a few spells and try to survive. It's a fairly simple game. Liked the style. Very grindy at the start though. But at some point, the game speeds up and you'll be creating vampires, robots and the occasional dragon or demon. Unit AI is pretty basic. Apart from casting some spells on a regular basis and chosing what type of units to keep near your tower, there's not much strategy going…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Haven't yet played a roguelike this unrewarding. At least 3 runs (if not more) for one upgrade. And it just forces you to repeat the same thing over and over. Damn. And minions are far more useless than in Necrosmith 2.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very grindy, very frustrating. Your characters' AI is less than ideal to say the least, you would have to control every single unit to the stars and back while also getting many other up at the same time. Necrosmith 2 is out, maybe that one is better

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Necrosmith pros: //fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on //good amount of action and special effects cons: //a lot of difficult battles/boss battles //some overpowered enemies //too many enemies constantly spawn //upgrades require a lot of resources //collecting resources are a grindfest //repetitive with minor changes that require players to play the same maps multiple times //some lack of directions/instructions for recipes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very RNG and a lot of grinding.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its just okay controlling your units is annoying you have them explore they just leave and you lose. I ended up just having most of standing still defending with king heads so they just spawn knights constantly and a couple strong units exploring the map. It was pretty boring i just waiting for hours for the game to be completed doing nothing. I would just get the second game instead It's probably better.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't like it. I paid almost nothing for it, so not really any point in refunding, but I'll be uninstalling it now. O can't tell you why, but something about the very game itself, the noises, and everything just got under my skin and felt like an offence on my senses rather than something I'd play to enjoy my downtime and after multiple attempts to play after 5 minutes I just want to alt-f4, and I can't really tell you why.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels like an idle game. Progress is mostly through gold, so you're forced to play multiple rounds. Very boring quickly.

Instead, I found one of the most creative indie strategy games I've played in a while. The idea of assembling undead creatures from different monster body parts sounds quirky at first, but it quickly becomes the foundation of an incredibly satisfying gameplay loop. It's one…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended 💀⚙️ Necrosmith is what happens when you combine a necromancer, a factory manager, and an army of undead creatures into one wonderfully strange strategy game. The main idea is simple but addictive: build your undead army, combine different body parts, upgrade your tower, and send your creations into battle against waves of enemies. Watching a ridiculous monster you assembled yourself become an unstoppable killing machine is incredibly satisfying. 🧟♂️🔥 The automation and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun and a great sense of progression and gradually learning the game with each attempt, A must play before Necrosmith 2 if you were to consider that one as well!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun tower defense game where you create your own monsters to fight for you! I started with the second game which I got randomly in a bundle and liked it so much I decided to try this one out too. I will say at first I was a little irritated with the ai and how grindy the game felt but I'm glad I stuck with it. Once you get a few upgrades the game evens out and becomes a lot of fun. I would recommend upgrading the assembly line and cat house first. This helped me the most. I got this game on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a caution before this review, I'd say that the game has an issue with balance. It kind of follows the Bullet Heaven mechanic of a boss timer that, if not prepared accordingly, would kill you in the spot and prevent your progression through the game. This wouldn't be a dealbreaker if not for the fact that the enemies it spawns are near the endgame, so unless you really have gone through the meta progression, you'll get stone walled from prepping for the final push. As well, that meta…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🎮 Gameplay 🔲 Excellent 🔲 Good ✅ Average 🔲 Poor 🔲 Staring at Walls is better Necrosmith presents a clever twist on indirect control strategy, strongly reminiscent of Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim. Instead of commanding units directly, you assemble undead minions from body parts and send them out into the world with basic behavioral tendencies. The appeal lies in experimentation involving mixing limbs and abilities to create bizarre, sometimes hilarious combinations. The concept is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute garbage game. Had it for a few years; didn't do my diligence and review it at the time. Game goes straight to a black screen; unable to reach anything except to hard reset my pc each time and I'm not going to go through a ton of steps for an old game that hasn't been updated in years either. Game loop was repetitive and boring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The spell/command to control your creation only lasts for about 6 seconds and when it wears off the field of view shoots rapidly off where you were because it switches the ASDW keys back to controlling screen movement (in which the sensitivity is bonkers high). I found myself having to use the control spell constantly because the AI is pretty terrible and they don't defend your base. Maybe I'm playing incorrectly and not putting units on defence like I should. I'll try again later and update…

neutral · AI labelView post →Would I recommend it? Maybe. The game is fun, and it’s probably one of the games with the most potential on Steam. However, it ends up getting a bit lost in small things that seem easy to fix. There are loads of characters, but in the end, I don’t even use half of them because they feel useless, while others become practically mandatory, so it’s not very well balanced.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun, great to put on while watching some TV. Super worth the discount price, probably worth the full price. Reading the reviews, I think many people are misunderstanding the game. There isn't an unbeatable dragon, it's just a hard boss that you need to clear. There is one at the end of every stage and it sets the window for which you have to achieve certain things. The AI isn't bad, its just based on their vision and speed. Increase vision and they will go after threats, or keep a few…
