The game crashes on set-up, but the fix was relatively easy. Follow the instructions here. Personally I did not click on 'auto-generate'. https://steamcommunity.com/app/256290/discussions/0/3825289852129186055/?ctp=2 As for the actual game, it was beautiful! A well-written game. The characters are all eccentric and unique (my favorite is the Robert, the rat financier). I can't praise this game enough. And the …

5.0/10. After finishing my time with Child of Light, I found myself feeling more than a little disappointed. Yes, the watercolor artwork and orchestral score were gorgeous all the way through, but the longer the runtime went on, the more unsatisfying the experience became. The use of rhyme in the dialogue and narration initially seemed like a clever and unique quality, but the lack of meter or scheme became grating, …

I can't believe I let this MASTERPIECE sit in my library unplayed for over 10 years. Wonderful on Steam Deck.

Child of Light has a fair bit to it. It's engaging. The game is your classic type of RPG with turn-based combat. The visual style is pretty stunning and the music has a lot to say about it as well. The storyline is well-explained. The controls are simple. A lot of games I've played recently have had at least one little thing that seems unfair, whether it be some stupid attack, or some ungodly difficult key combo. …

Critics, per Wikipedia
Child of Light received positive reviews from critics. Review aggregator website Metacritic gave the PlayStation 3 version 89/100, the Switch version 84/100, the Wii U version 84/100, the PlayStation 4 version 82/100, the Xbox One version 82/100, the Xbox 360 version 74/100, and the PC version 77/100. Vince Ingenito of IGN lauded the art style and character designs, finding them elegant and complementary to "a combat system that's second to none". Slight criticism was reserved for the dialogue – though he found it endearing, Ingenito believed the "slightly forced" rhyming scheme kept him from getting fully absorbed in the characters. Ingenito ultimately wrote that each facet of its gameplay…

During this photoshoot, a little girl wanted a hug from me & I declined; she was so sad. She'll probably have a vendetta against me the rest of her life😂 #childoflight #cosplay

I got this cosplay second hand by someone named Akemi Cosplay, who I can't find anymore unfortunately. I made the sword myself out of foam, built off of a toy sword base. #childoflight #cosplay

positive · AI labelView post →I know y'all know but... Games are more than numbers. Child of Light may not be Ubisoft’s biggest game, but it’s one of their most beautiful. A watercolor fairy tale RPG with JRPG-inspired combat, gorgeous music from Couer de Pirate, and more heart than most blockbusters. New REview is UP!
neutral · AI labelView post →Do not punish good games for the practices of their current publisher. This game was created in 2014, when Assassins Creed Unity came out. We can all agree that's before UBISOFT became the garbage fire they are today. The development team who worked on this game did a fantastic job. This is one of the last bastions of goo turn based RPGS, before the rise of games like octopath traveler and Ex33. If anything, buy this game so UBISOFT knows that anything prior to their greedy money grab games…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wrapped up my replay of Child of Light tonight. It's crazy to think THIS came from Ubisoft. It definitely has some minor issues- namely in the leveling and some of the combat aspects- but man, what a beautiful and moving game. Really nothing like it, even still. Excited to get to writin' 🔥
positive · AI labelView post →Thanks to Cynet! I have just bought this game on Steam <3 I loved Child of Light and I just know I'm going to enjoy this one too!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Child of Light was one of the first games I bought on Steam, and I was very excited to play it. I had to create an Ubisoft account, which was annoying, but I did it. Played for 46 minutes, then left do do something else. Tried to log back in. Couldn't. Checked my email. Reset my password. Nothing. Emailed tech support. Reset Password. Still didn't work. Tech support told me the only thing they could do was delete my account and send me a key for Child of Light when I opened a new account.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately because of Ubisoft's parasitic malware requirement, this game will not launch at all
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On a "slightly odd games for Amano to have done art of" note, I still have this poster for Ubi's Child of Light on my wall now. <3 Thought the idea of a western-developed console-styled RPG getting him in to do promotional art was such a lovely way to come full circle. Sweet lil game too. I liked.
positive · AI labelView post →#Ubisoft Montréal's Child of Light was out 11 years ago (2014)!👑 This traditional RPG felt like a playable storybook with gorgeous watercolor graphics, cute cast, and a stirring score (Jupiter's Lightning is still one of my fav battle themes~). Review: www.rpgfan.com/game/child-o...
neutral · AI labelView post →This game looks incredible, but I literally cannot play it because they force you to log in with an Ubisoft account to open the game, even though you're buying it on Steam. If you have an Ubisoft account already, maybe this is fine for you. But I don't think you should be forced to make an account for a completely different service to play a single offline single-player game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just like so many other negative reviews, the game is lovely, but unplayable. Ubisoft Connect will not allow the game to be played, and it instantly crashes the game on startup.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This next game on my backlog is something I've seen go by for many years, yet I never felt inclined to play it. Don't ask me why, I don't know 😂 Like many other games in my backlog that I ended up loving, @hananomaude.bsky.social says I'll enjoy this one too 😌 Now starting Child of Light!
neutral · AI labelView post →I have become comfortable with not owning Ubisoft games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So Child of Light was a Ubisoft rpg using their ps3 era ubi art engine. It was fiiiiine, but around this time the Bloodstained DLC was being made a sequel to the game was cancelled which probably explains why it was even collabing with anything.
neutral · AI labelView post →I loved this game when i played it over 10 years ago & I still do. Ubisoft, however, makes this game unplayable & I can't recommend it if it's not able to open on PC.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Oh, this game looks nice, let's open it and-" ~ can't open the single-player game without creating Ubisoft account and being connected to the internet ~ ~ immediately deletes the game, gives a bad review and blocks anything and everything from Ubisoft forever ~
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game #47 of 2026: Child of Light Started: Jul. 14 Completed: Jul. 16 For such a short RPG, this game is overflowing with beauty, both artistically and musically, and it has one of the greatest ATB combat systems in a turn-based RPG. I'm so happy to have finally played this! Absolutely incredible 🥹
positive · AI labelView post →Don't buy this. The game won't open. Seems it's a problem with compatibility with modern systems and Ubisoft won't fix it. It's really a shame. The game is a work of art. Beautiful and worth all praise, but unfortunately, it belongs to worst, most toxic company in the industry.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ubi connect is a 100% requirement and the game fails to launch at all. Online troubleshooting suggested that turning ubi connect into offline mode would solve the issue of instant crashes but they removed the ability to do so. The game is completely unplayable
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This listing shouldn't be allowed on Steam anymore, it is a scam. Literally unplayable in 2026. Unacceptable anti-consumer practice from Ubisoft. Played this years ago on Xbox, tried to repurchase on Steam and haven't been able to actually play the game due to Ubisoft forcing their Ubisoft Connect accounts, which are and have been completely broken for months.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game so good, a cast so bright! Stacked against other games, this one is full of might!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Explain a game you love: Child of Light features Aurora, a princess tasked to retrieve the sun, the moon and the stars stolen by Umbra. Poetry in motion. Poetry in combat. A story that unfolds with rhyme and reason and depicts the importance of friendship and helping others. I wish for a sequel!

neutral · AI labelView post →Tried to load the game up and can't play it as it's asking me to login to Ubisoft Connect, of which I don't have an account. I paid for this game but can't play it without creating an account on a third party service? Wtf is this?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game made my entire childhood, and now as an adult I get to play it myself, and it is the greatest experience I've ever had. Please, check the game out, it's worth the time and money spent.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy this game if you have a high core count CPU. The game itself is a masterpiece, unfortunately, Ubisoft doesn't care enough about this version of the game to fix the CPU issue, and most likely never will. I know there are workarounds for this, but I don't think cutting my CPU in half every time I want to play this game is an actual solution to the issue. For this reason I'm giving it a negative score, publishers fault, nothing against the devs that created this amazing game. P.S.: If…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far I cannot play this game. I tried deleting the version of ubisoftconnect that was included in the game files as other players said that was outdated, downloaded the most recent version from ubisoft, game still will not launch either from Steam or from Ubisoft Connect. Tried changing to offline mode in the ubisoft app, no effect. My processor has 14 cores, which is fewer than should trip up the "too many cores" issue. Hopefully some day I can actually play the game. Looks neat. I paid for…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, beautiful game and pretty much magical for an Ubisoft game. However, Ubisoft can fart on a log for making you download an Ubisoft launcher to play this on Steam.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crashes. Open, in Linux of course. It shows a Ubisoft login, which mercifully allows you to 'skip'. Then the game , ... crashes. That's ok, we have a Windows machine. Boot Windows. Fifteen minutes later, Steam is ready. Game installs super quick. Yay! Fire the game, Ubisoft needs a login. Ok, tap-tap, we've got a throwaway Ubisoft login. Game loads! White screen! Crash. So my initial reaction was quite poor. And I would not not recommend this game. After many hours of struggling, I…

Being a game using the Ubi Art Framework like in Rayman Origins and later entries, Child of Light (peak game, that one) I finally played this. It grew on me at a great pace, it showed me history, made me think with its puzzles, made me feel. Art at its finest. 4.5/5 #blutoid

neutral · AI labelView post →DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!! This game is abandoned and broken. I had to use a workaround to even get it to start. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Need to create a separate account using 'ubiconnect' to play this game. It was optional at first. They perform monthly updates to make sure you're not using any workarounds to avoid having to register or log in through ubiconnect, rather than fix their game. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you have a newer computer, you will not be able to play this game. I bought Child of Light several years back because I played partway through the game on a friend's console a decade earlier and enjoyed what I played. It's a beautiful game full of charm, but I cannot even get it to launch on on my laptop. The eight minutes of gametime associated with my account were all spent in menu crashes. There are workarounds, but I don't feel like configuring a custom database for this game just to…

neutral · AI labelView post →So, the only reason I'm not recommending Child of Light is that the game requires you to register an account with Ubisoft in order to play it. Now, if there wasn't a way to circumvent that then I would not have bothered to play it myself. This guide works though: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3274761816 but you shouldn't have to download strange files off of some random google drive in order to play a game you bought and payed for (the account requirement was added to…

This makes battles way more exciting 😌
positive · AI labelView post →Tonight at 7.30pm GMT @saintpyxis.art and I will be continuing Child of Light! Currently we're inside a giant carrying a city of capitalist mice. I can't wait to see what else this game has to throw at us! twitch.tv/rbillustration
neutral · AI labelView post →Child of Light is an amazingly good JRPG platformer. Even a decade after release, the visuals, soundtrack, and general atmosphere are amazing. The skill trees and gem upgrades are also straightforward, but welcome, and there are some interesting quirks in combat tied to the floating light companion that you control independently. It's set up as a fairy tale, so there isn't a lot of dialogue outside of some minor rhymes, but the game also doesn't drag on unnecessarily. Only one company could…

Some of you (like myself) may encounter crashing when starting or loading a game. I found this fix for this is, to block access to the internet for Child of Light. I did this through my firewall settings. No need to block Ubisoft connect or put it offline mode, just block internet access to Child of Light and you are set.
