Many players note that Iceflake Studios has significantly improved the game's performance and stability. [1][2][3] Some reviewers still criticize the game for persistent bugs, crashes, and a focus on paid DLC over fixes. [4][5][6] Several players express cautious optimism about the game's future under new management. [7][8][9]
- The game still suffers from frequent crashes and instability. [4][6][14]
- Paid DLCs are released while basic features remain broken or missing. [15][16][5]
- Optimization remains poor, with low frame rates on high-end hardware. [17]
- Some players feel the development direction is unambitious and slow. [18][19]

I cannot recommend Cities: Skylines II based on the direction Paradox and Iceflake are communicating. The biggest problem is not that the game receives no updates. It does. The problem is that, after months of Iceflake being in charge, the announced direction still looks far too unambitious for a game that needs fundamental improvement. Many players come to Cities: Skylines to build beautiful, realistic, believable …

Waited 2 years for this game to get fixed. Saw the new bridges and ports update and figured it was finally time to give it another try. I open up a fresh city on one of the new maps, beautiful map with the mountains reflecting off the lakes. I spend the time to map out my first tile with a road network, and start to zone. set up utilities and create my first industry. After almost an hour with the game paused to map …

Let me be upfront: when Cities Skylines II launched in October 2023, I was deeply disappointed. Not just as a fan of the original, but as someone who felt genuinely let down by the people responsible for bringing it to market. Two and a half years on, with Iceflake Studios now at the helm, I find myself in the surprising position of writing something I didn't think I'd be able to say for a long time — this game is …

Ever since development has been taken over by Iceflake Studios, the game has seen a dramatic increase in bug fixes, game stability, and performance improvement. Original City Skylines has more content, but if Iceflake keeps up the good work, I believe this could be the proper sequel it was meant to be.

Critics, per Wikipedia
Cities: Skylines II received "mixed or average" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. The game was nominated for "Best Sim / Strategy Game" at The Game Awards 2023. Leana Hafer from IGN said that although it has new enjoyable systems, the game can get better with post-launch content, stating "it feels like playing a beta, or a very early Early Access game." Ed Smith from PCGamesN describes how initial peaceful gameplay gave way to "supreme frustation and rage". In his Cities: Skylines II review, which scores the game seven out of ten, he concludes: "Something personal is lost in its larger scale while performance problems spoil the beauty, but this could…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stop dropping those trash DLCs and fix your broken game already. Do you have any idea how soul-crushing it is to spend hours building, only for the game to crash and erase everything? Absolute joke.

After YEARS of no bug fixes, they release a very very underwhelming update and then quickly release 2 DLCs that are not even included in the MOST EXPENSIVE VERSION of the game! Absolute scum move. Will not be buying future releases from this company.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please stop adding paid DLCs and focus optimizing this game it has such a good foundation but that doesn't mean anything if you don't build on top of it. I'll change my review the moment I say some real consistent effort to improve the game until then do yourself a favor and avoid this game if you do buy it all your doing is telling paradox interactive that they can keep doing nothing to improve the game and they'll just continue there focus on paid DLCs.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Worst management and development ever. I waited 2 years, hoping the game would finally be fixed; but nothing changed. The last DLC, Bridges and Ports, is the final nail in the coffin. Still no Asset Editor. Paradox Mods was the biggest mistake; everything breaks constantly, and there are serious security issues. The community? Completely ignorant. No one dares to say “CO, fix your sh*t.” Their website is a joke! You can’t criticize anything without getting banned or blocked instantly. Saying…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like me figured - "its been a couple of years since City Skylines II released, maybe they have fixed many of the things people disliked so much upon release!" - lower your expectations. Better yet, don't even try, just turn away and find a better game to spend your money on. This game suffers not just from issues that should have been patched since release, but issues that should have been fixed BEFORE release. You cannot sell a game so heavily focused on realism, which relies so heavily…

INVISIBLE CITIES really asks you to buy in. How to describe it? I could tell you, I suppose, that it's a dreamy travelogue of invented cities—
neutral · AI labelView post →2.5 years later and it still feels like we're beta testing an incomplete game, except now basic features being added like overpasses are being locked behind paid DLC. Combine that with poorly play tested updates that contain game-breaking bugs, and I completely regret purchasing this on release. I held off from posting a negative review in the hope that the Devs would make the game as promised, but that is clearly not the intention.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game play is nice, Optimization is bad. My spec is getting 20 frames per second at the population of just 100k people ( DLSS on Ultra Performance ). It becomes unplayable. I cannot imagine people with less costly PC set ups playing this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has been broken since launch for two years, and today the developer Colossal Order announced that they are abandoning the game, and handing it over to a company that exclusively works in mobile shovelware. The game, and franchise, is dead.

neutral · AI labelView post →I’ve been building cities since the original SimCity on Windows 3.1, so I have the patience of a saint when it comes to simulation complexity. I genuinely want to love Cities: Skylines II... the tools are there, the scale is right, and the vision is massive. But I’ve had to stop playing. The game is currently far too unstable for a serious session. I am hit with frequent Crashes to Desktop (CTD) that are uniquely frustrating because the Player.log simply stops updating minutes before the crash…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has reached a point where the developers are selling DLCs with content and features that should have been part of the base game from the beginning. These elements should have been included at launch. Instead, it has turned into a business model focused on pushing cosmetic items that do not meaningfully impact gameplay or the dynamics of your city. The base game, even if you purchase all available DLCs, still suffers from issues that hinder proper progression and, in some cases,…

LITERAL YEARS later only minor updates have happened and 90% of the game is still broken. As a neat bonus it also runs like crap (on basically every pc ever). And to add insult to injury, they started releasing DLCs for this game (which, to be fair, were included with my ultimate edition, but still, fix the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ base game first) AND NEW DLCs FOR CS1! I held off for a year and a half before I bought the game and still several months before I finally dove in What changed? Frankly the devs' commitment to making things better. I was skeptical at first but I have to say that despite there still being issues, the devs do care about fixing things. Colossal Order leaving and Ice Flake taking over seemed concerning but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For those that have played the previous game and explored all the mods, dlcs, and custom content, you will find this game lacking in all aspects. Now it is in a state where it barely matches Cities Skylines 1 during launch. Mods are supported and have qol improvements, custom assets were finally added after an year, and new DLCs are dropping. However, the game still has many bugs, most of the gamebreaking ones have been solved, and the optimization is still poor. On the positive, the buildings…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel ripped off. The only thing that is keeping this game marginally playable is mods, the bulk of my 600 hours of fighting this game to work. No one is paying the community modders to fix their game, yet two selected mod authors create content and this company goes ahead and throws the userbase over a cliff by charging over and above the ULTIMATE EDITION OF THE GAME that is already $120. This company is cooked. Do not buy. Other games deserve your money.

As the heir apparent to the undisputed champion of modern city-builders, CS:II had one job: to be CS:I but bigger, deeper, and better. It is, unequivocally, bigger. The "deeper" and "better" parts, however, seem…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Im just overall sick of games milking me for every dollar they can while providing the least possible value.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, not a bad game. But if you have CS1 with all the packs, just stick with that. I was really looking forward to CS2 but the base game lacks the same experience as CS1, and you have to purchase a bunch of add-ons just to get to the same level of game experience as CS1, and the add-on are terrible in comparison to the previous version. Airports and industry were my favourite things to create and manage but that level of detail is missing in CS2.

Cities Skylines (the first) was a legendary game, which was a solid pickup on sale. Sure, there was a lot of DLC, but the game was good enough on its own to hold its ground. Add a mix of mods in and there is a long lasting game. Cities Skylines 2 however, is simply OK. There…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll keep it very short. It's been years since release. Many features that didn't work when the half finished game was "released" have been fixed. That's good. Sadly the good news ends here. There is still plenty of bugs and the base game has been stripped to it's absolute minimum. It feels like playing vanilla City Skylines I all over again. It is very sad that a game has to rely on the modding community just to make it playable. A big thank you to all the modders that invest their free…

I didn't like the cartoonish look of the first game so I was pretty happy to see a more realistic look for the sequel and I gave it a try. Basically the game looks great and allows you to build detailed and complex infrastructure. The regional packs, unlike the DLCs, offer generally good looking buildings and are free. However, the game has one big issue that makes it unplayable after your city will grow a bit. The devs wanted to simulate every citizen and their…

There's zero incentive in this game to progress. It's the same redundant bull over and over. Traffic makes near zero sense, add a bypass and they will continue to take the stupidest direct route on city streets possible. Drop Taxes to zero and there's no increase in zone type. It…

I will keep playing this game as it is fun but I wish I had realized how bad this publisher would get with how it tries to pump its customers for as much as possible. Its so egregious that I wonder if Paradox is about to go bankrupt and they are trying anything to stay above water. There are "DLCs" for $80 which amount to little more than a bridge and some skins. The new developer (Iceflake) absolutely nuked the graphical quality; severely oversaturating the colours, and downgrading the lighting and shadow quality. The original game consumed more hours of my life than I’d care to admit, so when this launched, I was ready to build my next masterpiece. And honestly? It didn’t start off well. Performance issues, confusing systems, and mechanics that felt half-baked made those first weeks frustrating. It felt like the foundation was there, but the structure wasn’t finished. I wanted to love it, but it just wasn’t ready. Fast…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too many bugs in the game, still after all this time it has been out. Yes, I have played many, many hours of it, but most of those hours come from simply letting the simulation run while I sleep or go to work. The biggest issue that I have is how stupid the citizens are. I give them free parking and put roads with parking as well as parking lots near medium and high density buildings. Citizens will instead park 10KM or more away and then "death march" home or to work. Recently I ran into a…

The CURRENT state of the game is not worth $50 smackaroos, but I am hopeful this will change in the future, as Iceflake (its current developer) is making real progress on issues that have plagued the game for a LONG while. In its current state, there are a great many bugs and simulation issues that cause problems both early and late game, as well as visual glitches, however they do seem to be working on them…

Recently I've jumped back in only to find that no matter what I do the graphics are just awful, trees are blurry, shadows are overpowering, roads are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the mixed reviews are from the initial release, the game is a lot more refined and is very enjoyable to play. It still has issues, but the new studio is putting in more effort to optimize the game and make it a really good game. I highly recommend this one over the first game if you can run it, as the QOL features are a must have and make the game 10x more enjoyable. I wouldn't buy the game full price, but on sale it's very much so worth it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried CS2 at release via GamePass and it was just not in a good shape. Since Iceflake took over development it really has improved a lot. Sure it is not in a perfect state yet but good enough to recommend it for everybody who liked CS1 now.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rating: 2/5 - Not Ready for Prime Time I’ve put in a genuine effort to enjoy this, but the technical state of the game is a major barrier. The simulation hits a wall well before reaching 100k residents, leading to constant lag and frequent crashes. The main issues: Poor Optimization: Unplayable at high populations. Buggy Tools: Features feel half-baked compared to the first title. Traffic Logic: Way too aggressive and unmanageable, even in small towns of 10k. I’d trade this "sequel" for…

But I still enjoyed it enough that switching back to Cities Skylines 1 wasn't an option. Cities Skylines 2 has so many great features that I miss when I go back to Cities Skylines 1. How can I leave a positive review when this game was released three years ago and still has unresolved issues? How can the price be justified when the game remains unpolished and there have been so many broken promises over the years? Even after a change in developers, the latest update has made the game look worse than before. I'm not sure what they did to the shadows or the colors, but the result is terrible.…
