Until recently, I would have recommended Clanfolk as a fun and pretty well balanced colony sim with a lot of potential, but after a certain point, the updates moved away from adding new content/ technologies to unlock and instead started deconstructing basic tasks into micromanaged bullet points... I was an early adopter of this cozy colony management gem back in 2022, and it's still my favorite go-to game to unwind and relax. Over the years, I've barely scraped through winters while playing challenges, and I've built up from caves and huts to mountain fortresses, sprawling medieval villages, and expansive castles. I am beyond in love and impressed with this game. As a huge fan of colony sim/survival/building strat genre, this game quickly became my favorite ♥ I loved RimWorld but always found the combat aspects annoying. Clanfolk gives me that amazing colony-building experience but focuses purely on survival and family management. It's perfect!

This game has a lot of heart. It's cozy yes, but also deep and full of meaning. You can compare it to other games in this genre: e.g. Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, etc. The thing is, those games don't encourage you to treat your characters as though they were real people. I love this game! It's like Rimworld with no combat. I love Rimworld but sometimes I just want to build in it and be left alone, which is hard. Clanfolk scratches that itch for me. The unlock system is one of my favorites. No research, just build things to unlock new items in a cascade type way, if that makes sense. My only complaint is that new game-changing content has been slow in coming. The dev has things they want to implement, like taxes, more story items, brewing, theft, etc; but…

I just cannot stop playing this game! As you can see from my hours played, I absolutely love this game. I play it frequently and have a long run currently in year 46 with 14 generations. I wanted a family themed game and wrote that word into the steam store search bar - and voila, this game was the first result. Now I am managing a clan with 50 individual houses and craft shops arranged like a medieval village. The updates are very regular and the community and the developer are very involved.…

Clanfolk is a medieval colony simulation set in the rugged Scottish Highlands. Rather than focusing on warfare or grand conquest, it emphasizes the daily struggle of keeping a small family alive through farming, hunting, crafting, and surviving increasingly harsh winters. While its presentation invites comparisons to RimWorld, its gameplay is much calmer and centers on realistic survival and multigenerational settlement management. The progression system encourages experimentation. New…

A Colony Sim Without Real Stakes ⭐⭐☆☆☆ 2/5 — Scottish clans but no fighting? What is this? Clanfolk gives a really good first impression. The start of the game is actually hard, and that is something I liked a lot. Your first winter feels like a real challenge, and figuring out how to keep everyone alive can be pretty engaging. Managing food, shelter, and basic survival feels tense at the beginning. The problem is that once you understand how some of the mechanics work and learn how to abuse…

When I tell you that it is worth every full price penny... When I tell you that it is everything I hoped for and more... When I tell you that I CANNOT stop playing... This is a really enjoyable settlement game but there are a few things that could use some work, particularly late game. Making the more complex meals has absolutely no in-game value but requires a massive amount of materials/effort. So once you finally learn how to churn butter and make bread, it honestly feels like more hassle than it's worth. Additionally, why do we have to wait for other clans to come to us in order to buy/sell? If we can travel, then why can't we bring products to…

Appreciate the hardwork of the solo developer's but as it is currently the game still boils down to surviving the first winter and nothing to look forward after that. Second settlement is mostly just about repeating the same survive-the-first-winter cycle but with your favourite family members and pets. More events like outcast mother that leads to dealing with other clans could have been a potential solution to the endgame issue but that got sidelined in favor of more new tech.

Really enjoyed this game and ended up losing a week of my vacation to it when I first bought it - it's been years since a game managed to suck me in like that. In short, it's a chill colony sim with a focus on historical accuracy and construction/production processes, without any tedious combat. It also taught me that you can bake bread from oats and almost had me order organic landrace oats from a scottish island but they wouldn't ship to Sweden because of Brexit. 10/10 will get sucked…

I was an avid Rimworld player until I started having intense nightmares. This game allows you to build a multi-generational run and has a lot of room to build and expand. There's a lot of things to unlock and tinker with, which I really like. I wish there was more character centered things, like quests, conversation and more interaction from other clans but overall I would DEFINITELY recommend this game!!

This game is absolutely the city builder your looking to scratch that itch where you can dig deep into your city, its layout, its people, the economy, job specialization, cool housing, and more. What you wont find is outside enemies attacking, zerg hordes, and the usual "outside" influences. This means you will spend more time managing your town and no time building walls and turrets. 254 hours in, and still no EA fatigue. Clanfolk is one of the rare Early Access titles that feels like a living, breathing project — not just a roadmap. The developer, Blorf, isn’t just building a game; he’s building trust. Every update is a window into his thought process: why things change, how systems evolve, and what philosophies guide the design. It’s not just patch notes — it’s storytelling. Just read his Progress Update about Bees as example... The game itself is rich, layered, and…

8.5/10 I'm a colony simulator enjoyer. I've sank quite some time on them. Clanfolk excels when it puts the core of the simulator on building your clan (extended family), which is lacking in others games of the genre. It really gives an incentive into designing your clan's hold. The current map expansion and plans at building "outposts" will further increase this aspect and I give props to the developer for it. In a (positive) critical note, If I were in charge of developing the game,…

Is this game for everyone? No. But if you are excited when you read that the latest update is going to be delayed because a two day R&D plan has turned into a weeks-long deep-dive into ancient beekeeping practices that will then be implemented into the game, then this is definitely the game for you. The strategy is deep, creativity abounds. Slow gameplay, yes. But is it satisfying? Absolutely.

Unfortunately, a lot of potential was wasted here. The development of the game is incredibly slow and for years features have been missing that could be implemented in a single workday. Bugs and gameplay errors that existed years ago are still there. I don’t want to just throw around empty words, so: there is NO overview of wildlife you can hunt, you have to find them on the map. Hunting is often buggy (in 10 days not a single animal was killed, although we tried, it just moved too slowly). The…

Clanfolk sat in my wishlist for a while, but I kept going back to look at the gameplay screenshots and wondering about the game. I adore colony/town management that zooms into the management aspect (managing food stocks that matter to the folk, assigning jobs etc.) rather than zooming out (diplomacy, upper vs lower class, etc.), and this game absolutely scratches that itch. I adore the building ''discovery" system, wherein you have to collect a certain amount of an item to discover some…

The devs keep making Clanfolk worse with every update. Each new system is added to “fix” the previous one, but instead it breaks the game even further. They recently added a range circle to every workstation so clanfolk wouldn’t walk across the entire map for materials. In theory, good idea. In practice, it completely destroys the game. Workstations now refuse to craft if the required items aren’t inside the circle — and since the hauling system is broken, nothing ever gets hauled into the…

Clanfolk instantly hooked me as a long-time RimWorld player. I enjoy games that reward careful micromanagement and the quiet satisfaction of watching a settlement slowly grow over time, and Clanfolk delivers that feeling very well. The gameplay loop feels very familiar. You assign jobs, organise production chains, and slowly expand a small group of settlers into a proper community. The pace is relaxed, which lets you focus on planning and optimisation rather than constant pressure. Watching…

I have mixed feelings. Too much micromanagement, and a bit tiring. The technology tree is too extensive, with some unrealistic/linear requirements (must build sth in order to progress, but I don't really want to build that). On the other hand - quite unique and I had some nice time playing it. Maybe I'll come back to it, but it quickly got me tired and a bit bored. That said, I my conscience doesn't allow me to give it a negative review.

Frustratingly burdensome controls. You have to click so many times to do simple tasks such as gathering, deconstructing, or adjusting stockpiles. You're FORCED to go through the menu which has everything catergorized into little and specific subcategories; it's incredibly frustrating coming from Rimworld where you can simply right or left click areas or objects to interact. With almost 1700 hours- I'd say it's definitely worth it. While I don't need 400+ mods like some other (rim)world base building games to even make it playable, much less enjoyable- I do sometimes find myself yelling at the people for being dumb/not doing what I want. 11/10 keep playing. Only real con I can think of is population control- I'd like to not have to do a ton of rooms with multiple single beds just to keep my pop down.

This is a game similar to its direct inspirations Rimworld/Dwarf Fortress with more emphasis on "Scotland" and "Cozy Survival" rather than trying to be a full-on epic colony builder (Dwarf Fortress) or frontier raid (ahem, story) game (Rimworld). I've played both of those games a lot and enjoyed them both, and if you have too, you know how Clanfolk feels as a game. If you like either of these games, you'll like this one. The main difference is Clanfolk has no emphasis on combat/war. Short…

Today I talk about #Clanfolk - a fun colony builder game set in the Scottish Highlands. Ticks all the boxes for me so far! #Gaming #VideoGames #Blog aywren.com/2025/11/24/s...

I wish I didn't have to put a binary score on this. I don't hate it, I've got a good 28 hours out of the game in short order and it represents good value from the cost. I like the concept of generational progress There are lots of things to like, and if it works for you then great. But I did find a few things that diminished my enjoyment and means it didn't feel right to do a thumbs up - and I think given the game has got very good feedback, some balance is probably fair in the reviews. > The…

Clanfolk is a piece of art by a developer who is interested in the game himself. It's a tiny project and while I normally ignore Early Access titles this one is worth it. I played the challenge of the highest difficulty settings with the orphans and barely made it. Once the challenge is done there is not much else that is challenging you - but that's okay. I enjoy the cozy playstyle, prepare for the next winter and build even nicer houses for an even bigger clan. The added challenges via the…

The game is slow and repetative. The game has zero strategy, you just work towards unlocking and building the next thing from the tech tree. The furniture is weird, some can rotate, some don't, and it's sometimes hard to see on which tile item is located and where the pawns can walk.

Absolutely addicted to the game - the difficulty is perfect! It takes thought and planning but it isnt stressful or frustrating. I love how you start with a straightforward goal of surviving the winter which grows to planning a full settlement for the children and grandchildren of your original clan. The biggest hurdle was forcing myself not to set every task to the emergency "!" - use it sparingly and only for time sensitive tasks (like getting food out of the rain before it rots). 10/10 -…

My goodness this game is a hard one to review. Ultimately Im landing on a not recommend. The pathing in this game is whack as well as prioritisation, Im not sure if this is still an early access game but it sure plays like one (if it is is EA then that explains half of it!) The idea's track is unique but things dont unlock in a realistic fashion. If I have a field of stones and can make a stone fence wall you betcha bottom dollar I can use those stones with clay and reeds for daub walls. I…

I am IN LOVE with this game! Been playing 2-3 hours every evening for months now. At this point I have about 250+ folks and it feels less like a clan and more like a little village (: I gave them family names and keep track with their family lore. I build a huge farm with about 70-80 cows and more chickens then I can count, and I manage to keep growing ang expending every year. And I still haven't finished the idea list! Poor guys still clean up in the lake since I haven't learned baths yet…

Oh dear, I downloaded this game on January 23 and have somehow already put 110 hours into it. I have not had a reason to stay up until 3:00...4:00...6:00am in many, many years and yet! I can't seem to put this game down. I've tried two different scenarios so far: the standard and the Hermit. I bumbled around in my first two attempts of the standard scenario, but in each of those attempts I learned how to do things better, smarter, faster, etc. Third time's the charm, and I eventually built up…

TLDR: This game is great and you should get it! I love this game! The developer is super communicative and I really enjoy reading how things are added into the game and why and what's coming. But that's just the bonus cherry on top of this delicious sundae of a game! The starting is very easy and it's nice to decide how many people you would like to start with and how difficult you would like your game play to be. There are a zillion different map seeds to pick your favorite from. The…

This game is truely an underdog, particularly if you like medieval settings. It has everything you may miss in Rimworld and it misses everything you hate in Rimworld. All included, no need for mods. The gameplay and feeling is so unique. Relaxed summers, harsh but cozy winters. So many opportunities, so much to do and decide to guide your clan through the seasons and so many challenges to pursue. Get it now! And gift your friends a copy too.

Cute survival game without monsters and bandits. It focus on production chains and family development. Work of passion.

This game had me hooked for weeks... more like months (pausing right now but I might return). I like that your only "enemy" in this game is nature. No battles. Much of my focus went into thinking about who I might want to marry into my clan and who I might rather marry off to another clan. Traits seem to get passed down so choices there really matter. Also longterm. Plus (noted that as I am writing this, the game is still in early access...) the devs are pushing out regular free updates and…

I love this game. I immediately got hooked in. I enjoyed RimWorld, but there was too much combat for my taste and I did not really feel much connection to the characters. With Clanfolk, I have found myself just letting the game go on the slowest speed and following one of the Clansman around like an ASMR background video.

This is already a big competition for my gaming time against RimWorld. Cozier, less combat focused, but very satisfying. The standout for me is the development updates that keep rolling in tackling complex topics that bring depth to a game that could already stand on its own. If you like colony sims, this is one that should be in your library.
