What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,411 of 1,657 positive).
Players describe Command: Modern Operations as an exceptionally detailed military simulator rather than a conventional game. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the steep learning curve and complex interface, but find it rewarding once mastered. [4][5][6] Some players criticize outdated tutorials, missing features, and poor customer support. [7][8][9]

Complex is fine - Bad onboarding is not. The tutorials are outdated and no longer match the current menus, which makes learning an already difficult game even more frustrating. For such an expensive title, it is also disappointing how much content seems to require separate DLCs, while features shown in screenshots, like the 3D view, are not actually included. My first game also crashed with multiple error messages. …

I was hesitant to try CMO; online discussion left me with the impression that it was intended more as a simulation tool than as a game that can be played for fun. This was a misconception--perhaps I was uniquely misled, but if anybody else is looking into CMO as a 'gamer' rather than 'I have a burning need to simulate conflict XYZ' and has seen similar discourse, do not be turned away by it. I can't comment on how …

I’m 25, huge fan of military aviation and naval warfare, and I’ve been looking for something that feels like an actual combat simulator not just an arcade shoot-'em-up or simplified RTS. Command: Modern Operations completely blew me away. This game isn’t “fun” in the usual sense it’s intense, cerebral, and brutally realistic. You're not flying a single plane or commanding a tank squad; you're running entire …

One of the best, most complex, naval warfare games made. If you don't have basic knowledge of various platforms and weapon systems, along with basic naval and air tactics, this game would have a very very steep learning curve. This game takes work. However, it's very rewarding when you do get a basic mastery of the game.

And to say that kills me, because for a huge amount of those 1,000+ hours I have with this game, the first 70-80 percent were fantastic. TL,DR: This game just isn't worth the money and time required to play it anymore, not like it once was.…

neutral · AI labelView post →I gave it the ol college try. I used the 4k patch in the install directory, I also used 125% windows override DPI setting. BUT I still could not get the text on screen to a comfortable level to read for long periods of time. This seems to be a symptom of these ultra deep spreadsheet type strategy games, they all have tiny fonts that force you to constantly lean in and squint at your monitor. Pretty ridiculous considering 80% of these games is reading the text onscreen. Refunded to steam wallet.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EDIT: It seems the company has finally fixed their older DLC to work with their current engine. Still leaving my review as not recommended because the only reason they fixed it was from the major backlash they faced. If you can't handle catering to your public audience and fixing DLCs that you release for a fee to the public, then stop making games for the public and stick to your Military market base. There is absolutely no excuse on how this company handled the issue in the beginning. Do…

neutral · AI labelView post →An interesting, albeit extremely complex combat simulator that the vast majority of players will bounce off of hard. This isn't a problem in and of itself, of course, but the official discord is so overwhelmingly hostile toward people seeking help that when (not if) you encounter a niche issue, you're probably on your own. There are a lot of peculiarities in the sim that outwardly appear to be bugs, but might just be the result of 19 moving parts that have somehow gotten misaligned somewhere.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, crazy sad that almost everything on the product page are add-ons which you have to buy separately, no more in depth scenarios, no 3D view as in the screenshots. It's really disappointing for such an expensive game to not contain the contents shown.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Command: Modern Operations is, quite frankly, the spiritual successor Jane’s Fleet Command always deserved — the game I spent years hoping someone would have the courage (and sheer madness) to build. If you grew up watching tiny blue and red symbols dance across a CRT monitor while trying to keep a carrier battle group alive in the GIUK Gap, stepping into CMO feels like coming home… only the house has been rebuilt into a six-storey command bunker with reinforced walls, satellite uplinks, and…

negative · AI labelView post →I soooo wanted to like this game and on paper, it seems like it'd be right up my alley. I grew up with games like Strike Fleet on the Apple II that were as realistic as they could have been at the time, and I still go for hardcore sims of various kinds like X-Plane and MSFS (with add-ons for realism). I'd been looking for a really good, realistic modern naval wargame for a while and this kept coming up in my recommendations. But it's just not really what I'd consider a "game". It definitely…

neutral · AI labelView post →Honestly an amazing game concept and idea, but unfortunately I just can't give it a positive review because it's unusable for large scenarios. Any scenario that's *not* a simple small-medium sized tactical mission will come to a screeching halt due to the number of assets in play - that is to say the game will start running at extremely reduced speed. If the game receives a large update that drastically improves performance, I will happily change this review.

neutral · AI labelView post →You will find that most people who are posting negative reviews, did not appreciate what exactly this is. It is less a game, but rather a complex military simulator. It is exceptionally detailed, and has immense depth - covering many nations, and nearly any piece of military hardware (provided it has an entry in "Janes"). And if you don't know what Janes is, then I suspect this 'game' probably is not for you. If you do - then I suspect you will enjoy this.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is probably more suited to the absolute die hard spreadsheet sim fans, don't get me wrong its amazing but I haven’t enjoyed it like I thought I would. The UI is a little basic for casual and new players and the learning curve is just way too intense, there really needs to be a far simpler game setting so it plays more like say sea power. When I purchased Command I thought it would be like a spreadsheet version of DCS, instead its extremely complex for example; the game treats…

neutral · AI labelView post →I admit that this simulation clearly would take many hours just to get across the basics. However, I am reviewing this game early because the tutorials seem to be not kept up to date which is a big red flag for such a complex simulation. The quality of the game It is very dependent on the scenarios being well built and having knowledge…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For what it is, this game is amazing. My only issue with this game is that I wish the ground movements, details, and combat were as in depth, I would love to use this on a more strategic level to simulate ground Operations. (For this reason I'd say 80 dollars is overpriced, 40-60 is more reasonable and 60 is pushing it.) Wonderful game if you are interested in simulating air-to-air, air-to-ship, ship-to-ship, air-to-ground scenarios.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is it. The ultimate be all-End all modern warfare simulation. This game/simulation is as much a challenge to any warfare simulation enthusiast as there can be. Let alone any of those sitting in real world War College / Military headquarters bringing real world wargames to life. (Plus, from what I've heard this interface is MUCH Better) Honestly, any more realistic and you might find yourself answering some REALLY REALLY tough questions from some "Grey Men" in a barely lighted room. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh man, I want to like this game so much. I have absolutely no problem learning a complex interface, or painstakingly working my way through tutorials. But my big frustration with this game is the design and execution of the user interface. A hot, buggy mess. Buttons frequently give no feedback when clicked... did anything happen? Missions silently go awry if you accidentally hit the wrong key like 'b' for Return to Base. Rules of Engagement settings don't stick unless you set everything up…
