What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 159 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,659 of 4,062 positive).
Players fondly recall Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines as a cherished childhood game that still holds up today. [1][2][3] Many praise its challenging, no-handholding stealth tactics that demand patience and strategic thinking. [4][5][6] Some note technical issues like black screens or clunky controls, and a few find it too difficult or dated. [7][8][9]

cool conceptually just when it's already a ww2 setting which makes any game have to work harder for me to be into it. It also has really really rough controls with commanding your commandos. This wouldn't be much of an issue, but it also is one of those "strategy" games that are more jigsaw puzzles in that there's only really one intended solution which just isn't my thing since for a game like this, it inevitably …

This was my childhood game, although I cracked it back then. I didn’t dare to play it at the time, just sat and watched my dad play. Back then, I was like his biggest fan. Now I can afford to buy the full version of this game and confidently play it, but unfortunately, he’s no longer here to see it. I bought this game to play again and to keep some memories of my childhood. Dad, I miss you <3

Old school gaming at its best, no tutorials, no hints, no arrows pointing you what to do next, a real challenge especially if you make it to the last few levels. Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines is an enjoyable game even for today's standards. 10/10 recommended.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines remains, even two decades on, one of the most satisfying and intelligent real-time tactics experiences ever released. From the moment you land on the occupied French coast, you’re plunged into a series of intricately designed missions that demand creativity, patience, and genuine strategic thinking. Rather than overwhelming you with explosive firepower, the game encourages the classic …

This was, and still is, one of my favorite childhood video games. I love the graphics, I love the voices, the animations..everything feels so well-polished to me, even to this day. What I love most is the fact that I can finish a mission in at least five ways, maybe more ...I don’t even know. I just love it. Whenever I want to have a good Sunday afternoon, eating pizza and drinking sodas, I play some Commandos.

Critics, per Wikipedia
Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines received "favourable" reviews according to the review aggregation website GameRankings. Next Generation gave a high praise to the game, citing its graphics as "gorgeous", and its gameplay "tough" and "challenging". The game was a significant and unexpected commercial success. Designer Gonzalo Suarez attributed its sales to word of mouth, as the game received little promotion and said that they were aiming to sell around 15,000 copies. In the German market, it spent 16 weeks at #1 on the computer game sales charts, taking the position from Anno 1602 and holding it through Media Control's rankings for the second halves of June, July and August 1998. The game's…

Shadow Gambit Speaking of my favourite games from last year, I still can't recommend Shadow Gambit highly enough and deserved so much better, a stealthy strategy murder-puzzle in the vein of the old Commandos/Desperados games with an undead pirate crew. store.steampowered.com/app/1545560/...
neutral · AI labelView post →Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is 50% off right now which I think is a historic low, and it is criminally underrated, deserved way better. A Stealth/Strategy game in the vein of Commandos but with undead pirates and a more open ended mission structure store.steampowered.com/app/1545560/...

It's hideously undersold but every bit as gorgeous and detailed and DRIPPING with religious animosity as you'd expect from the team.
neutral · AI labelView post →Be honest, how many folks are finding out about the new Commandos game for the first time from this?
neutral · AI labelView post →We just published Sumerian Six (sumeriansix.com), a WW2 stealth/tactics game that carries the torch for classics like Commandos. With that in mind, I designed the manual to look like something you'd find in a '90s big box PC game.

Visuals and sound design 👌🏻 There's also a great story here. A Flawless masterpiece because I literally can't think of any. 10/10. A lovely surprise. 🥹

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Two new imsim-adjacent games to be on your radar: - The Stone of Madness (by Blasphemous dev), an RTT stealth game in the vein of Commandos but more reactive - Eternal Strands (by former Dragon Age dev), imagine Dragon's Dogma with more physical and elemental magic interactions
neutral · AI labelView post →I was playing The Stone of Madness on stream tonight, and it's very neat so far, 2D isometric stealth game along the lines of Commandos but with a sanity system and a hand drawn art style about inmates escaping a secret monastery/sanitarium, and it has a demo! store.steampowered.com/app/1309710/...
neutral · AI labelView post →The Stone of Madness is a stealth tactics game in the vein of Commandos from the developers of Blasphemous, and I really must revisit this because it's incredibly visually and thematically striking, this year has just been completely overwhelming with releases store.steampowered.com/app/1309710/...

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun With this game, developer Mimimi singlehandedly resurrected the stealth strategy genre that started with the likes of Commandos and Desperados, and it's every bit the successor to that legacy you could ever desire, nobody did it quite like them. Play it!
neutral · AI labelView post →28. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun Developers Mimimi did something incredible with this and brought a whole subgenre back to life; real-time stealth tactics as pioneered by the Commandos series. It's seriously worth your time if you like stealth games and an incredible gem at such a discount.

If you like games where mistakes aren't instant game overs, but instead create emergent scenarios where you have to improvise, you'll love this one. And it's dirt cheap right now. store.steampowered.com/app/1309710/...
neutral · AI labelView post →There's the best deal yet on Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew + DLC. Probably the best stealth-tactics game (Commandos, Desperados, etc) of its kind. There may not be another like it, as the studio disbanded immediately after release. Really fun Ghost Pirates versus Magic-Hating Inquisitors setting.

Isn't for everyone: static scenarios, old 2D engine (you can't rotate the scenarios), clunky vehicle driving and difficult missions. But it's incredible funny: immersive, real tension moments, and probably the best part: Only few clues to beat the missions (no "yellow lines" o shinning objects to follow). I remember a mission where I had to rescue five resistance soldiers and I lost one of them, I though "ok, the game isn't…

With a group of elite soldiers in your hands, you help the Allied forces defeat the Nazi Germans in World War II! Now for a game from 1998, the graphics, even though they are isometric... It's acceptable Each elite soldier has his role, which I think is very good The gameplay is ok... But you have to know what you're going to do by clicking to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →> could have been a cool turn based JPRG Yall know that ‘Fallout’ was originally turn-based? No need for anything Japanese in there, the RPG system was pretty good. The nineties had some cool turn-based tactics games, like the ‘Jagged Alliance’ series, ‘X-Com’, ‘Incubation’. Even realtime tactics were very nice in the isometric view, e.g. in ‘Commandos’. Now that everything needs to be in either first-person or third-person from behind, such games rarely pop up.

I played this back when I was 5 years old in 2007 or something with my Uncle and had to save thousands of times to complete the first few levels. Very difficult and keeps you thinking. However, This game's code doesn't hold up in this day and age. Everything is laggy, limited FPS, no quick time event like Desperado's has. There are issues you need to solve to fix before playing like the resolution and Slowed gameplay.
