Players praise Boltgun for its fun, fast-paced retro shooter gameplay that evokes classic Doom. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the game repetitive, with weak level design and a lack of innovation. [4][5][6] The game is seen as a solid but not exceptional entry in the boomer shooter genre. [7][8][9]

Boltgun review I will be honest, I really wanted to like this game, especially after seeing all the praise it received online and I feel a bit crazy because I feel like I am the only one who found it incredibly boring and tedious, to the point, that if it wasn't a Warhammer game I would have dropped it long ago. At this point, I'm convinced that people are just so starved of any game that works on release and …

You pull the trigger heresy explodes. You stop moving you die. You think you’re done the game spawns 20 more cultists. It looks like Doom had a baby with Warhammer 40K and raised it on pure rage. The bolter feels illegal, the soundtrack hates silence, and subtlety was executed for heresy. You don’t play Boltgun to take cover. You play it to erase everything on screen in the name of the Emperor. Final score: Gun …

the okayest boomer shooter ever. Boltgun is like a steak that looks good but tastes bland and spiceless, but atleast its a steak. it got its moments and if you like 90s era boomer shooters, mindless shooting and alot of gore then sure go for it, but personaly i think Boltgun is nothing special and could've been better.

tl;dr Fast, simple, and consistent retro shooter fun, it has no pretentions or ambitions beyond that and benefits from that simplicty. Weak navigation tools and some repetition hold it back, but the core loop of moving fast and deleting enemies is solid. Player context Played through the main campaign on Emperors Mercy difficulty, will probably start the Forges of Corruption DLC soon, and tried Horde mode (wasn't …

Players who liked Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun talk about fast-paced, fun retro shooter action; those who didn't talk about repetitive combat and enemy encounters. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
On Metacritic, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun received positive reviews on Windows and Xbox. On Switch and PlayStation 5, it received mixed reviews. PC Gamer praised the soundtrack as feeling true to the setting, "Both the occasionally haunting atmosphere and breakneck combat are reinforced by an incredible arrangement of sludgy guitars, thumping industrial beats, and monastic chants and harpsichords". GameSpot liked Auroch Digital's interpretation of the titular weapon, writing that "[t]he Bolter roars with an emphatic racket, and each pull of the trigger packs an almighty punch, ferociously propelling these explosive rounds". While criticizing Boltgun's level design as being confusing,…

neutral · AI labelView post →As someone who is tangentially aware of Warhammer 40k and is interested in the setting, this was a fun way to experience parts of this universe hand-on. As a boomshoot fan, I am disappointed. This is not a game that stands among Dusk or Amid Evil; this is a wannabe Doom 2016 with pixel graphics. This game has zero understanding of the design philosophy of old FPS games. There's no real exploration in any of the linear maps, momentum is constantly halted as you are forced into arena fights,…

I felt like I got the gist after level one and all they had to offer from there was bigger swarms and longer battles. Game has two songs max. Somehow this made a repetitive experience even more repetitive. Game has two scenarios. No monsters, or all monsters lobbed at you in circular arena. Maybe they mix up how many dudes come at you of one ilk or another but the game plan is the…

neutral · AI labelView post →not a boomer shooter, but a Doom 2016-like which doesn't understand what made Doom '16 good nor the appeal behind boomer shooters. the level design in particular is sloppy and boring, and the enemy roster is not conducive to interestingly designed combat encounters if the devs were even interested in making one. i've had multiple 40k fans tell me that the experience is made better if you're already a fan of the property, but it's a boomer shooter, it should stand alone on its gameplay.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished the first chapter on Exterminatus and I am not convinced I can be bothered going any further. Maybe the 40k nerds will find some enjoyment in it, but for boomer shooter nerds, it's just kinda average. It's there. It exists. It's a game. - Visually, the game is a mess. The enemy sprites aren't great, and by default they're covered in a pixellation filter that makes them look even worse. The footsoldiers and humanoids are all visually very indistinct, and some of the demons…

The guns are a lot of fun too, and I really liked the aesthetical variety between levels. If you really love Warhammer, I could see you still liking this in spite of its flaws. That said, those flaws are pretty damning for a boomer shooter. There's no map, the…

I really tried to like it, I even picked it up again recently to see if maybe I was wrong. The purges of endless enemies is a slogging grind, the level design is boring, the music is bad, and the weapons don't feel good. It looks great on the surface level but it's just not fun for me. It's one of those games that everyone glazes which made me wonder if I wasn't playing it the right way. But, after…

Opinions are divided on Boltgun online, but when you first boot-up the game you’ll probably think “Hey, this is pretty good!”. The art design is gorgeous and feels like a remaster of Squad Command, the outrageously underrated PSP tactics game. The huge number of detailed, handcrafted assets build out the world, and the environments change colour regularly to keep things visually fresh. One of my…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun for around eight hours and I’m currently at the last chapter, playing on the highest difficulty available, Exterminatus. The game clearly aims to recreate the classic boomer shooter formula, very close in spirit to something like Doom 64, with fast combat, constant movement and a very straightforward objective: run forward and kill everything in front of you while playing as a Space Marine fighting chaos forces. The presentation leans heavily into the retro…

neutral · AI labelView post →Warhammer Boltgun is gloriously flawed, and that's why it's perfect. The clunky movement makes you feel like a tank in human form, the repetitive gunplay is a meditative ode to purging heresy, and the outdated visuals? Pure retro charm that smells like an ancient Chapter Relic. It's janky in all the right ways, like a Chainsword that occasionally sparks. You wouldn’t trade it for anything. But the real masterpiece is the brilliant difficulty curve. One second, you’re an unstoppable Space…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was fun, but it actually made me dizzy and gave me a bit of motion sickness. This is the first time that's ever happened to me with a flat-screen game. I tried messing around with settings like FOV and making sure I was getting max FPS, but it didn't help. Maybe it's the animation frame rate that got me? I don't know, but I can't recommend this game because, for me (important, may not be for you), it was unplayable.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple but really fun shooter. I had a great time with it. It reminds me a lot of the games I used to play when I was younger. Just jump in, grab a weapon, and start blasting enemies. No complicated systems, no huge cutscenes every five minutes, just straightforward action. I kind of miss that style of game. Back in the day you’d just start the game and be playing within seconds. Playing this honestly brought back some memories of the early 2000s when shooters were all about fast gameplay…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A realms deep retro FPS. It's good enough, and big enough. No, not 39 hours big, more like around 20 hours big. Half the time was spent with the game minimized while I was doing something else. At times it feels like its too easy before abruptly becoming too hard. There are powerups but you'll usually find them when the battle is over. The level design is somewhat poor so the devs recently added the compass from quake 2 remastered to stop people from getting lost. There is a DLC but I don't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boltgun is simultaneously a fun game on its own terms, and a little bit disappointing as a fan of the original Doom. Essentially this is Doom 2016 with a graphical gimmick. There's nothing wrong with that - Doom 2016 was a great game - but what I want from a retro-shooter is for it to use all that processing power it's saving for other things. This is still fundamentally quite a linear game, with most of the encounters and fights being relatively tightly choreographed. I was hoping for a bit…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is a tricky one to review since I was really hating this game until I stopped playing how I wanted to and started playing how it wanted me to. Let me explain. This game is very much more Nu-Doom than classic Doom. There are tons of lock-in arenas, weapon swapping for different enemies is crucial, and you will take tons of damage and heal your way out of it. If you vastly prefer the old-school way of success meaning avoiding damage altogether, you will need to change the way you play or…
