What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 184 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (248 of 448 positive).
Many players find the remaster runs well on modern systems, with some reporting no crashes or bugs. [1][2][3] Several reviewers criticize the price, calling it too high for what is essentially a texture pack. [4][5][6] Some players report performance issues like stuttering and crashes, especially compared to the original. [7][8][9]

For context, I have 100% of the achievements in this remaster, and it took me over 85 hours to do. For the TLDR, I cannot help but feel that this game was an attempt to ride the success of Space Marine 2, rather than a meaningful game in its own right. I think the UI is considerably worse than the original, and for the multiplayer achievements, the player count is so low that I had to buy the game for my friends so …

I cannot believe they considered "modernized UI" as taking everything that made the original UI 40k aesthetic away. They changed the standard bolter sound to subsonic integrated suppressed gun sound (NOT GOOD) with absolutely NO BOLTER CRACK OR CHUNK OOMPH TO IT!!! WHY! YOU KEPT THE BOLT PISTOL BUT NOT THE BOLTER! And dear god the aliasing is worse than original, especially cutscenes like how, the original game …

TL;DR: Get it if it's under $10, turn on V-Sync to prevent crashes; have some fun. I picked this up on a big sale after putting over 200 hours into Space Marine 2. I wanted to see the origin story of Captain Titus from this game. I knew it was old, and I saw a ton of complaints in the reviews, so I was a bit wary going in. I was expecting dated gameplay that I'd just have to suffer through to enjoy the story. So I …

It's Space Marine 1 made to run on modern computers. With some higher resolution textures. That's it. As usual, Steam reviews are full of complaints about performance and stability. Also as usual, I didn't have any issues. Game runs great, zero crashes, zero meaningful bugs. Looks and sounds better than the original. I honestly have no idea what people must be doing to their computers to be having all these …

I have a 10 year old system with a GeForce GTX 1080 (8GB) and I never crashed once or had a tough time running the game from start to finish. I've played the original Space Marine on this same system and I think the Master Crafted Edition ran BETTER. So ... I have no idea why the negative reviews are having issues but I had absolutely none. P.S. Praise the emperor!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even for the discounted price, it's still asking for a lot. I genuinely see no reason to buy this. More people play anniversary, and to call it *master crafted* is a bit much considering what you're getting. Had a gut feeling from the get go this was gonna be sh*ite. Stick with the anniversary, more people play it so you can find matches, and it runs better as well. Seriously, no difference other than some increased lighting. Stupid of me to buy I know but at least I can say steer clear of…

The current vibe is thinking about Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun! ngl Boltgun was a tough game 😤 the game was filled to the brim with thrilling combat, and the levels were fun to explore, it was an awesome game! positive · AI labelView post →Great game, but this version of the game is not optimized. Game stutters and is full of bugs. Developers should be ashamed of themselves for releasing this game in such a bad state. Horrible.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →there’s a sci fi game/expanded universe called Warhammer 40,000 where people called “blanks” have no soul and everyone else reacts to them with an instinctive disgust before they even know what they are. It’s probably the same feeling seeing people on here talk about their Claude prompts

neutral · AI labelView post →The original is objectively superior in every aspect but graphics, so if you aren't a graphics hoe, you should probably pick that one up instead. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine - Mastercrafted Edition is the same 2011 game we all know and love, with a few caveats. The first is a moderate reworking of colour palettes and character models to look more 'new', but this doesn't do much for the overall look of the game besides making it feel like a PS4 title rather than a PS3 one. The Ork models…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awful optimization and stutters. When the original version runs perfectly, the remaster runs like crap. This is not a remaster - this is a joke! Don't waste any penny for this embarrassment.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite being verified for Steam Deck at the end of July, an update in the last few weeks has caused the game to crash on launch when played on SteamOS. Can't really recommend the game if I can't play it the way I planned to.

neutral · AI labelView post →Space Marine MCE is a $40 high resolution texture pack of the first Space Marine game. Want my advice? Go buy the Anniversary Edition instead. https://store.steampowered.com/app/55150/Warhammer_40000_Space_Marine__Anniversary_Edition/ Yes, both cost the same but AE actually has a small but dedicated playerbase and it doesn't take up 43 gigs of space on your computer. I hate to be dismissive of MCE because the high res textures and remastered sounds are good but that's all I can compliment…

positive · AI labelView post →Holy stuttering aliased Batman, is this an awful, janky remaster. I thought some of the reviews might be exaggerating, but nope. This is the definition of a cash grab. Half-assed "upgrades" and random changes to make it at least look somewhat different from the orignal, and then slap and almost full-price tag on it. There's honestly no way this remaster is an improvement on the original. Texture upgrade? Maybe, but it seems patchy as to where they actually upgraded it. The characters'…

positive · AI labelView post →THE GAME: Warhammer 40,000 is a squad-level minatures game, which means it is about moving little men across a table which represents part of a planet and pretending that the little men are shooting and punching each other. Jules Verne did this too, so it's intellectual
positive · AI labelView post →game has way more bugs than the anniversary edition somehow. Have had countless crashes and multiple times where i cant switch or shoot my guns. Terrible version of a great game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They haven't optimised this game, it crashes constantly in the campaign, its laggy and frames drop hard on good PCs. DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION BUY THE OTHER ONE, this rehash was a cash grab and they should be ashamed of it. I'm annoyed i cant refund this game, i got straight up scammed into thinking it was a new and improved version that could run with modern systems. The only way to play this game is to cap your FPS in Nvidia Control Panel or equivalent to 60. There is a sequence of the story…

neutral · AI labelView post →On the face of it, the Master Crafted Edition great improvement on the Anniversary Edition, but it doesn't take long for that to change as you play through the campaign. You'll enter areas that clearly haven't been given much love, with dull, repetitive textures, that feel jarring with the much improved character models. The biggest problem is that the game without fail will crash on Chapter 9: The Weapon, in the transition between the Valkyrie to bridge section. The way around this was to…

neutral · AI labelView post →A very poorly remastered game doing the bare minimum. Ran decently on Linux (albeit crashing fairly often), but is no longer playable on Linux/Steam Deck since Patch 5 on August 11th, which ironically made the game Steam Deck Verified. Huge L on Steam & SneakyBox/Relic. I recommend buying one of the older versions of this game if you really want to experience the story, or just play Space Marine 2 for multiplayer.

neutral · AI labelView post →Honestly I recommend the Anniversary Edition (especially on sale!) as there is not that much of an improvement here. The minor improvements that have been brought to this package do not really justify the price tag as the previous version is still great and playable to this day.

neutral · AI labelView post →While I'm a fan of remakes to relive old classics, this one is downright audacious. Sure, the textures are better, but that's about the only positive thing you can say. There are a lot of negatives, unfortunately. The UI is terrible. In the original, everything was bold and heavy here, it's all tiny and narrow. The weapon sounds are a joke. The bolter, which had proper boom-boom sounds in the original, is now just a water pistol. The character voice acting is still out of sync. Everything has…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →buggy. honestly looking at comparisons between the OG and this 'remake' I think the OG looks better. they only put on upscaled textures but didn't put any work to make it actually work so it looks very offputting. It's like when u play games designed for crt monitor but on LED screen upscaled to 4k and so the game looks like ♥♥♥♥ cause it wasn't meant to be played that way.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have the original game on GOG so I played a bit of both side by side. This version did make some improvements I could perceive in terms of graphics, audio, updated modern controller schemes, etc, but such improvements were so marginal that this should have been a free update for people who already own the previous versions, or at most a paid DLC you can turn on and off, since people were also upset about some changes.

An enhancement to your camera lens makes it take clearer photos. The noun enhancement comes from the verb enhance, meaning "to increase or improve," and it can describe anything that's an improvement to the quality or value of something. People might make surgical enhancements to their faces and bodies to make themselves look better — otherwise known…

I didn't like how this game felt even after changing the sensitivity and the graphics, while fairly decent, isn't really a whole lot better than the Anniversary. Of course this is all my opinion. I compared it to the Anniversary Edition and I found that to feel better and still look pretty good. But of course if you don't have the game yet, then I would say this could be worth a purchase. But just not for…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →despite the dev's of the remaster trying their best to get it working but at this point it's become a case of the well being poisoned to the point any good faith was left has been shriveled, to where salvaging it is to far to late and it sucks cause it would have brought more new life to this game, but sadly this isn't the timeline where it actually is a good remaster so it is what it is. oh well at least dawn of war definitive edition ended up actually being a good remaster thankfully.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →let me pay 40 euros for a game from 15 years ago made by a studio that somehow fumbling the space marine license wasn't their biggest 40k fumble(the disaster of dow3) or pay 50 euros for space marine 2 a game from 2024 that somehow even runs better. gee i wonder which one's the better option edit: the performance is beyond awful, i have not had a game stutter this much ever.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brand new Warhammer fan here. Started with Darktide, went to Space Marine 2, felt like I was missing context, so went to Space Marine. The game does look better than its 2011 counterpart (or its later definitive edition or whatever). However, I will tell you right now, it is NOT worth the $40 price tag. There is a bug that was present in the original game, where the game will just flat out crash consistently at the end of a certain cutscene (actually more than one from my research, but it…
