What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (383 of 394 positive).
Players widely praise it as one of the best shoot 'em ups on Steam. [1][2][3] Many note its excellent novice mode makes it accessible to beginners. [4][5][6] Some reviewers report technical issues like crashes and save loss. [7][8]

Where do I even begin? If a Cave-style arcade STG is what you're after: this is the peak. Nothing has been said about this game which hasn't already been said. Crimzon Clover is comfortably the best STG there is on PC. Made with the crystal clear and intense vision of one man (STG superplayer Clover-TAC) and executed to razor-sharp perfection, it has no faults. Crimzon Clover has a bit of a reputation for being …

I am a complete shmup noob but this is the most addictive game I have played in decades. I have recently tried about a dozen of these games and always keep coming back to this.

In contention for the best shmup on steam, it's got it all. Great options for beginners with the novice modes, the arrange mode is quite different but serves as a good stepping stone into arcade, which is where you'll spend most of your time. Clearly made by someone who knows the genre inside and out, and although being very difficult it never veers into feeling unfair. 100% recommended.

This review is coming from the perspective of a complete Shmups noob after doing a Novice One Credit Clear (Pay good attention if you have never played a Shmups game like me :D): I always was curious about why people love shoot 'em ups so much, because it looked to me like they are simply filled with some random bullets that cover up the whole screen without any clear way to realistically dodge them. Unless you …

Best shmup on Steam by a significant margin and strong contender for best in the genre period. If you can only get one, make it this one.

Made with the crystal clear and intense vision of one man (STG superplayer Clover-TAC) and executed to razor-sharp perfection, it has no faults. Excellent visuals, a killer soundtrack, satisfying mechanics to learn, and a lot of different modes that feel distinct. store.steampowered.com/app/1718160/...

Good times. Also Little Caesar's stuffed crust is fucking great.

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm going start off this review by sharing some notes I took from the game: So for the boss at the 2nd phase of stage 3, there's this pattern that looks like he is shooting icicle like bullets in a spiral patten that slowly turn into spiting the bullets out at random. Your first thought is likely: "This is RNG, the only way is to Brute force reaction time it" But it isn't, the bullets go in a wave. Slowly ride the wave until you get to one of the bottom corners, then stay there until the…

positive · AI labelView post →My all time favorite bullet hell
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got a 1CC. I just want to pat myself on the back a little. I managed to get a 1CC! Now, I don't really "play to win." I play because I like the games. I haven't even credit fed my way through some of my favourite games. If the game looks and sounds good, if I can get into because of some mechanic or quirk, I'll play it. No matter how horrible I am at it! Outside of shmups, I generally want to beat the games. But with shmups, I'm more of an "if it happens" sort of player. That's what…

neutral · AI labelView post →Crimson Clover is a well-loved shmup among the shooter community but I've been avoiding it for so long because it looks very hardcore and extremely difficult to keep track of what's going on on-screen at any given moment. Boy, was I ever wrong and I have missed out on a fantastic shmup because of my preference for non-bullet hell shmups. if you loved vertical shooters from developers like Cave, Psykio or Doragon, you'll adore Crimson Clover. If, like me, you hold back from committing to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not just the best doujin shmup ever made. It's maybe not even the best doujin game ever made. I think a good argument could be made that it's the best indie game ever made, period. It's a masterclass of arcade game design, and I'm not sure how I let this sit in my Steam library for 4 years before finally listening to the chorus reaping its praises. If you like Cave-style shooting games and haven't played this you're doing yourself a disservice.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Right now im switching between 3 shmups Touhou Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Crimzon Clover World EXplosion And Gradius 3 Im close to being able to beat EOSD on Normal and the other two are still wip but im having fun learning the genre #shmup
neutral · AI labelView post →It's a fun shooter that doesn't set itself apart from other shooters but is enjoyable to play and challenging plus has a solid soundtrack.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this because people recommended it as a starter shoot 'em up game, good for beginners. They said that the novice mode was nice casual fun without being completely mindless. I consider myself to be quite good at games, but if this was casual then real shmup players are not human... Crimzon Clover is actually a game made by a pro bullet hell player called CLOVER-TAC. He was apparently quite famous back in the day, setting multiple world records over the years. Because of that you might…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's pure dopamine, insane game that has dangerous levels of juice and game sauce oozing out of every pore, and the arrange modes are unexpectedly surprisingly laid back in their difficulty. this game needs to be studied in a lab because like how did they do that
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The score groups digits with commas. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The more you get into this game, the more you see how every part was precisely designed to allow for an insane skill ceiling. Plus the novice mode is really nice
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Any action/fighting/shmup franchise because the stories are typically nonexistent/shit anyway: 1. Bayonetta: I recommend the original as a starting point for an authentic action experience, but Bayonetta 2 is more beginner-friendly. 2. Devil May Cry: either 3, or 5 will work—3 if you're after a challenging experience, and 5 if you're looking for an insane combo simulator. 1 could work as an entry point, but it's too old and will not appeal to everyone. 3. Ninja Gaiden: I…
neutral · AI labelView post →SHOOTING GAME NEVER DIE. Good lord, what a game. Absolutely overwhelming and, no doubt as a result, endlessly fun. Be humble; run through Novice Original on your first (set of) playthrough(s) until you can do it on one continue and then do it all over again on another ship, another mode—whatever. I was VERY unsure about committing to so much as a single proper run of this thing within my first ten or so minutes—a trial period of sorts in which you have to definitively decide whether or not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally one of the best shmups and therefore games ever made.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best shoot 'em ups out there! Novice mode felt perfect for a beginner like me. Took me around 4-5 hours to get that 1CC clear. Anyone can get it with some practice. I will come back at some point for repeat clears and for the Arcade original clear, which will probably take weeks of practice. Replays and training modes are also super useful. I did training mode runs on the last boss and that made the game much easier for me. Soundtrack is great, visuals look super busy, but bullets…

positive · AI labelView post →Bird Cage, Blue Revolver Double Action, Gunvein, ZeroRanger, Crimzon Clover World Explosion, Rolling Gunner, Raging Blasters, Schildmaid, Like Dreamer, and Graze Counter GM are some nice modern games I've been getting plenty out of. But a lot of my favorites are disconcertingly old as well.
positive · AI labelView post →Not sure why I took so long to get into SHMUPS but I am sure glad a decided to start with Crimzon Clover. Great game with several different modes and ships to play with. While you can technically "beat" the game in about 45 min. by credit feeding, however what kept me coming back was chasing my high score to get that new personal best, or trying to get that 1 Credit Clear. What I appreciate about Crimzon Clover is that is has robust training options that let you practice specific stages and…

neutral · AI labelView post →Hellsinker. I kept hearing it's a "one-of-a-kind shmup" and it's a "shmup that somehow plays like an action game", so I tried it twice and couldn't see why it's praised. Third time I was like "OK, ima read the manual, read guides, and give it one final shot." and holy shit, what a game. I'll probably be playing it forever, TBH. Up there with Crimzon Clover World EXplosion for me now.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →playing this game feels like having the most delicious and palatable candy you've ever seen and tasted shoved down your face 24/7
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crimzon Clover hooked me from the start. I appreciate that there are no visible characters or talking parts, but an immediate focus on the action. And while this degree of chaos and screen clutter are not typically present in my favorite scrolling shooters of the past, those elements work well here. But as intense as it is, this game is surprisingly accessible. Although sometimes obscured by the chaos, the art is very good. I particularly like the fourth stage with its cloudy purple sky and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cave-like bullethell, very well made. Highly recommended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From the mid-to-late 1990s onward, long before the current indie scene, the Japanese doujin scene has been known as a veritable haven for shmup enthusiasts. Crimzon Clover is one of the finest titles to come out of it, although both the 2014 Steam release and this one originate from enhanced ports later backported to PC. The production values are quite high for such an "amateur" production. The spritework, effects and bullet patterns are easily close to Cave productions from the first half of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crimzon Clover World EXPLOSION, Kamui and Ketsui Kizuna Jigokutachi come to mind. You may also like Battle Traverse if you want a horizontal shooter :) Ketsui is on PSN via the M2 Shot Triggers port, highly recommend if you want a CAVE title to play.
neutral · AI labelView post →Lowk an overstimulation nightmare visually but when you get past that this is definitely an amazing shmup thats beloved for good reason, I love the 2nd weapon mechanics and the break system is really engaging even from a survival perspective.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Serious contender to Cave's DoDonPachi series, not better but different. Great game, worth every cent of the 20 bucks. But has some technical issues ...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you love CAVE shmups, just buy it. If you've never played a bullet hell shmup in your life, but really want to try one, buy it. The novice mode isn't as patronising as one might think, with later stages still providing a decent challenge, and the arrange mode is super fun!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good shmup, novice difficulty is a nice introduction to the genre.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10 - This game has done a better job capturing my early 2000's arcade rush then most of my library. Everything about it is fun and enjoyable. Highly Recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →9. Crimzon Clover World EXplosion - Novice Original 1cc (Switch)
neutral · AI labelView post →I recommend but this is quite an expensive game if you are casual, even on discount, the price makes a lot more sens for hardcore players playing the many different gameplay modes. Let's be honest as a casual I finish the game once, maybe a second time with another ship then I am done because after that it is all about making the biggest score playing the exact same again and again. So Crimzon Clover World EXplosion replayability is very low for casuals but a boon for hardcore players. There…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great Game. Arcade mode is brutal. Novice mode feels decent, though still pretty tough. This is a really hardcore shmup. Nothing bad to say about it really. One of the best ever made.
