So, this is one of those games that has me quite split about them, however I do believe the game setting itself to be one thing and then end up being another warrants the negative review. There is literally nothing I do not love about this game. I haven't experienced joy from a video game this way since I was a teenager. I'm not one to exaggerate either. This game nails the feel of the 80's when you're a kid. The graphics are retro styled and the animations are fantastic. The dialog is top notch, not to mention very funny, and the game is packed with hilarious hidden gems. Combat, along with each …

Did an in-depth review here: https://youtu.be/D3rN2wQ8PwA As it stands, I can't recommend this game at full price. I wish there were a "mixed" review option, because Crossing Souls does a few things right that the devs should get more praise for. Pros: - gorgeous art style - extreme attention to detail, especially in the first area. The worlds feels very alive and authentic. - absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BALLER soundtrack composed by the likes of Chris Köbke and Timecop 1983 - tasteful and clever…

This game has a lot of awesome ideas and on paper is a total banger. But... it there is a lack of polish and playtesting done. This really needed more time in development. There are big issues with not healing at save points and not all characters being able to dodge, climb, and jump. Having the constantly change characters winds up feeling tedious. Children of Morta did the different characters with different abilities concept much better. Most games I don't like I just uninstall and that…

This is a hard review to write and yet another example of how I struggle with Steam's yea or nea review system. I hope you read this review because you might enjoy this game a lot depending on what your expectations are. In essence, the game is designed as an 2d overhead action RPG with a plot that is more or less an homage to 80s young adolescent centered dark fantasy movies that were common at the time. This game is exquisitely designed in how it executes its theme. The graphics, plot,…

The first 2 hours are amazing. The first 2 chapters and the overall art-style of this game hooked me instantly. The soundtrack, the pixel art, the retro-style cartoon cutscenes and all those little pop-culture references are all well done, and they perfectly set up that 80s Americana feeling. Alas! That was the only good things about Crossing Soul. The rest you'll get is a bland and uninspired adventure. It's served with a disappointing story, that has nothing interesting to offer. The…

I really wish I could recommend this game. The atmosphere, the soundtrack and the graphics really add to the nostalgia and I found the cut scenes to be amazing. It really brought back the retro days of playing video games in the 90s. However, I found the puzzles to be a huge source of frustration and having to restart something over and over again is something I was fine doing when I was a teenager with endless amounts of free time. They weren't inspiring puzzles and just infuriated me. I…

I'm of two minds on this game. The pixel art is charming, and the nostalgia is great! I even enjoyed the puzzle bits! And the gorgeous animated cutscenes were a treat. Unfortunately, the game has a LOT of issues. The story goes off the rails (and not in a good way) in the second half, with most of the main cast simply disappearing. Combine this with a host of infuriating issues, and I simply gave up on the game at the last boss: ~Cutscences are lengthy and unskippable, and in many fights,…

This game looks great, hits a lot of the nostalgia points, but has too many negatives to recommend. The story, while they are trying for something a little heavier than you would think it doesn't really work. There are tons of nods to 80's culture. Unfortunately, most don't really work. It's a bit corny a lame the way a lot of the 80's stuff is introduced. The worst part for me was the gameplay though. The first half isn't too bad. You can deal with any shortcomings of the controls okay.…

Appealing at first as the trailers suggest, the game soon become just too much under many points of view, including gameplay mechanics and story. I understand putting a quote in for each and every movie from the 80s, but the container doesn't hold and one grows tired much earlier, IMO, than 3 hours in, as others describe.

This game is way too punishing if you do not press the exact buttons at the exact time. You will fail over and over and over again and there is no way to skip the cutscenes. I appreciate the art and the ode to 80s media, but I have just had it with the game. The platforming is way too buggy and you cannot remap the controls at all, so your left hand becomes extremely cramped as you try to both jump and hold onto things. What I can only assume is the semi-final boss fight has you facing a group…

Crossing Souls was such a weird experience. When I've seen the screenshots, I've fallen in love with the game. When I started playing, I loved the music, it's really outstanding. But the more I played, the less I enjoyed. Tehcnically the game is somewhat lacking. Weird control scheme with mouse and keyboard, no ability to rebind, and basically no visual settings. The game is played in a pseudo-3D environment with sprites, that makes depth perception hard at points. For platforming you need to…

It feels like crossing souls was a passion project that was abbandoned relatively early on. It looks very nice and the opening is pretty intersting but everything else falls apart very quickly. For example, while there are multiple playable characters, some of them are way more fleshed out than others and usually you do not have all of them available, so gameplay is more limited than expected. There is also no character advancement or items or anything of this sort that would make any of the…

I felt that the premise was cool, the pixel art looked good, and the music was nice. The cartoon cutscenes felt kind of weird, as the art contrasted so much with the rest of the aesthetics. As I played more, I liked it less and less. The story turned kind of lame after a while. Some out of place violence and a tremendous amount of pop culture references seemed like tools to get the player's attention, but they all felt misplaced and unimportant. I realize that, given the story's theme being…

Damn it, I hated this game yet I really really wanted to like it. It does the 80s justice. Music is the traditional 80s mix between John Williams-like OSTs and synthwave, 80s references are there aplenty, it's obvious they are capitalising on the success of Stranger things (and good for them). But... the gameplay is bad. The camera angle makes for some Ultima-8 kind of bad platforming, the combat and stamina meters are only there to slow you down and certain sequences carry on for way too…

Basically, Stranger Things: The Game, but not great. This has all the elements of being a fun, campy, teen 80's movie (of which I am a sucker for), but it kinda falls apart or rather never comes together. Personally, I think all of the characters fall flat and I never really cared for any of them. The combat is just button mashing and uneventful with just an attack and dodge button (and the dodge only works half the time). I don't know, the game was just kind of a bore-fest and now thinking…

I played Crossing Souls. A game heavily rooted in 80's nostalgia, but that manages to have a surprisingly bold vision that brings it beyond its nostalgic roots. Despite a generally unpolished gameplay and naive writing I can't bring myself to dislike it. It was bolder than lots of 80's revivals.

The aesthetic of the game is neat and the first couple hours of the game is fun as you reveal the plot and encounter some nostalgic bits of pop culture from the 80's, the era in which the game is set. It should be fun to control a group of friends that you can quickly switch between, but there is so little variation that the game becomes stale very quickly. It's unfortunate because the style of this game is much better than the mechanics, so for me it became not very fun very quickly.

Crossing Souls is a nostalgia driven platformer where the nostalgia plays stronger than the actual gameplay. Sure the cut scene art style and music choices are excellent callbacks to another era but the gameplay mechanics are clunky and kept me from ever feeling immersed in the game.

It feels kind of like an old-school Zelda, though much more linear and with a "beat 'em up lite" quality to the combat. The puzzles are pretty easy-breezy and there's not a wide variety of usable items; you're not going to spend that much time on any one screen and there's almost no backtracking. So there's this sense of speed to the whole thing, gameplay and narrative progression -- you're a kid but getting older, summer vacation no longer seems so long, some innocence is sloughing off and…

This game is like playing a Spielberg film, with the mood of the storytelling and big moments. The friends relationships really shine in the story and lead to a nice and satisfying ending. Probably the one gripe I have is when it comes to playing through big moment levels, the difficulty goes up quite a bit and can throw the player off a lot. Not that it makes it a bad thing. It actually makes the story feel more grandios to the player. Still, you will be dying a lot. Regardless, best eight…

While the game's art and story are very nice and evocative of a 90s Kids TV show aesthetic, the game is ruined by its actual gameplay. There is not one single issue that breaks it but all of them combined makes it worse than the sum of its parts. Controls. They are not rebindable and as such suck really hard. The game isn't kidding when it says to use a controller - the controls on keyboard are absolutely terrible. It definitely took the fun out of the gameplay for me, perhaps it would have been better with a controller. The colours are awesome, the music sublime and the characters memorable and clichéd enough to be just right. The parcouring and plattforming was mostly okay for me and I am very bad at these games. I ran into a game breaking bug in chapter 5 where i can not change characters causing me to be stuck as Big Joe, and since i'm stuck as big Joe i can not jump and progress in the game. Can't recommend until this bug is fixed

Loved it. The graphics are perfect and the detail is great. So many fun little things to find and characters to talk to. The cut scene animation is just fantastic. Exactly like an old cartoon. The characters, story, gameplay, it's all wonderful. Other than some clipping, slightly unfair platforming and one really stupid puzzle, I don't have anything bad to say about this game. I recommend it 100%. Can't forget the sound either. The sound effects and ESPECIALLY the SOUNDTRACK. Right up my alley…

Crossing Souls is an action-adventure game with a strong retro vibe, inspired by the 80s. You play as a group of kids trying to uncover a mysterious government conspiracy, switching between characters with different abilities. The story was quite fun, even if some parts felt a bit over the top. The pixel art and cutscenes were nicely done, and the music fit the overall vibe pretty well. You can get 33 achievements for doing various things like finishing the story, finding collectibles, or…

Crossing Souls is a jack of all trades but master of none. The art style, especially in the cutscenes, is incredibly nostalgic and beautiful, but the good ends there. I've played quite a few frustrating games and enjoyed them, but all of them had one thing in common—far less clunky controls. It is one thing to create a challenging game. It is another to rely on clunky controls and unresponsive actions to create said difficulty. All of that would be fine enough if you were rewarded with a…

While I do enjoy a nostagia trip like many others, I'm not going to pretend it's flawless. The difficulty curve is pretty high, some elements aren't really explained too well when it comes to characters and their abilities, and there was a parody of Duck Hunt that I feel aged poorly.

I absolutely love this game, even though the ending was somehow unsatisfying.

I like a lot of what they were trying to do here. The pixel art is great, the concept behind swapping between playable characters is fun...but this is severely held back by some sloppy level design. This feels like if it had baked a little longer, it could have been magnificent. The story might be more appealing to someone else, but it's heavy on just making references to 80s movies. Kinda like how Family Guy would write jokes that were just vaguely gesturing at some other pop culture thing,…

It's lame and you get tired for it pretty quickly.

I have played some "lighter" titles like Journey (originally a PS exclusive), Little Nightmares and Crossing Souls. It's really nice to be able to play PC games on the go and (although I've not yet played AAA games on it) am quite pleased with it's performance.
