Players praise the game's tactical depth and atmosphere, calling it a masterclass in dungeon crawling. [1][2][3] Many describe the game as brutally punishing, with RNG causing frustrating losses of high-level heroes. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the game requires embracing failure and learning from mistakes to enjoy it. [7][8][9]

It's difficult to rate this game. On one hand, it's fun, has solid mechanics, it's got a good atmosphere. On the other, it's very repetitive, slow, grindy, brutally harsh, swingy in range results and not an interesting story/premise. I feel like the game simply doesn't respect your time enough. And because of that, I can't recommend it. To back up my point. Only about 20% of players has even managed to get 4, 6th …

Level 6 Hero got absolutely wombo combod by a random group of spiders in a random hallway. I have lost more high level heroes in this manner than to bosses. This game makes me want to swallow glass. Anyway, 10/10, Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer. And so are hallway bugs.

This game will break your mind, but you'll keep coming back for more. Forget RPGs that handhold you Darkest Dungeon 1 is a masterclass in tactical depth. If you want punishing mechanics where every decision actually matters, this is it. Why the mechanics and gameplay are brilliant: 1. Stress & Affliction System : HP isn't your only resource. At 100 Stress, heroes break—gaining game-ruining debuffs (Paranoid, …

The difficulty was off-putting at first. Once I accepted the inevitable demises of some of my characters it really became enjoyable. In a game like Fire Emblem where character death is permanent I felt more compelled to restart the level every time i lost someone. I would get a similar feeling at first with this game and it led me to drop it after losing an experienced character. I kept coming back though and now …

An absolute masterpiece. Ignore the comments saying that the game is too hard or too RNG based, they are nonsense. The game is the definition of "easy to learn, hard to master". Your main enemy is lack of information and lack or preparation. When you go into a dungeon without knowing what you're going to encounter, what are the appropiate curios interactions, what's the boss mechanic, etc, you'll get recked. But …

86% of the 274 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Darkest Dungeon®. The complaint that keeps coming up: rNG can feel unfair and ruin runs. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received generally positive reviews on its full release in 2016, holding a score of 84 out of 100 on Metacritic. The Escapist awarded it a score of 4 out of 5, saying "Darkest Dungeon will kill your party, drive you insane, and leave you a gibbering mess at the Sanitarium. Yet it's so compelling and rewarding at the same time, you won't be able to resist diving back in for one more quest." IGN awarded it 9.1 out of 10, saying "Darkest Dungeon is a punishing and awesome game of tactics, management, and pushing your luck to the breaking point." PC Gamer awarded it 88%, saying "A wonderfully executed, brilliantly stressful reinvention of party-based dungeon-crawling, Darkest Dungeon…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have tried to like this game for years. I go through it, I get to the end game and then when I eventually get bad RNG and lose a bunch of heroes I stop playing. I can understand the game being "hard" but poor RNG like several crits in a row from an enemy that eat a level 6 hero is blood boiling. It's not that the hero dies it's that the game has 0 respect for player time. Want to regrind a million dungeons because there no system in place in end game to make resolve level XP increase? ♥♥♥♥…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like 50% skill and 50% pure luck. Your hero has 5 Speed and the enemy has 1? Doesn't matter. The enemy can still act first, sometimes even twice before your team gets going. Then comes the chain of bad luck: attacks miss despite having high accuracy, enemies land multiple critical hits in a row, and suddenly a run you've invested 20 hours into is over. The biggest problem is that Darkest Dungeon often feels like it punishes the player regardless of their decisions. You can…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game's so good, they released a sequel, realized people liked the first game a lot more, then went back and released new DLC for the first game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game isn't difficult-- it's a waste of time. The game acts like it is just really challenging but really any setbacks from losing heroes can be easily overcome by spending hours grinding other heroes up to that level through easier quests. And that is just not something I want to do. Other hard games like elden ring can be overcome by getting better, but this game must be overcome by grinding heroes up and dumping them into the challenges until the RNG allows a breakthrough. I have better…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my favorite strategy game of all time. (Which means it's the best, obviously.) "Darkest Dungeon is about making the most of a bad situation. Quests will fail or must be abandoned. Heroes will die. And when they die, they stay dead. Progress autosaves constantly, so actions are permanent. The game expects a lot out of you. How far will you push your adventurers? How much are you willing to risk in your quest to restore the Hamlet? What will you sacrifice to save the life of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was really liking this game, but I can't recommend this game to anyone that respects their time. To be more specific my main complaint is about the restriction of my characters being "too strong for dungeon", like wtf is that stupid restriction??? If I farm, get strong and allocate skills/upgrades in a smart way that ♥♥♥♥ is on me, I BUILT THAT ♥♥♥♥ and the game decision is to tell me "no fam, you can't bring those mfs here, they too nonchalant". THATS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, IDK WHAT YALL MASOCHIST THINK,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are typically two kinds of people who play this game: 1. Those who figure out a winning strategy and enjoy the ride. 2. Those who can't figure one out and blame RNG.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Darkest Dungeon is less of a dungeon crawling game and more of a 'team building' experience builder. All of these bitches hate each other and no matter how many games I throw at them, they're stabbing each other mid boss battle. #darkestdungeon

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate this game with a passion, it will ruin your day, you will lose your jester due to 3 crits in a row and have the whole squad go insane. 10/10

neutral · AI labelView post →8.5/10 Really good game, i feel like its not for everyone though. You really need to understand what you need in a party early on and look up knowledge online because this game is full of knowledge checks. RNG is in a weird place some times it got me frustrated sometimes it got me excited when i got virtue. Overall I think its a really good turn based game with a good amount of grind.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some people love the punishment. I do not. There doesn't actually seem to be all that much to the gameplay itself and success and failure can feel like a complete flip of the coin. The game absolutely oozes style and atmosphere but that can only carry it so far before your session can become an exercise in relief that you made it through or frustration that the RNG resulted in your party getting rolled and wasting your time. There are some things you can learn for your next run but the RNG…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stop shoving DLC advertisements into the core gameplay. It’s intrusive, obnoxious, and makes the game feel like a vehicle for selling DLC rather than a complete experience. This kind of monetization reflects poorly on both the game and you as a developer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everyone and their dog has played this, so you most likely have played this to. In the event you haven't, it's great. I played about an hour of it a long time ago and couldn't get past the fact that everyone will most likely die. I know that's part of the game, but I just couldn't warm up to it. I came back to it and now love it. Remember you are leveling up your Hamlet (town) and that's where the persistence factors in. Remember, even if your best character died, you still have the Hamlet…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Posting a negative review not because I didn't like it, it IS a good game, but it has a few quite big design flaws that make the experience a lot worse. The biggest ones imo: 1. It's really grindy in an annoying/boring way, quest reward isn't the problem, but how long it takes to finish those quests for the rewards you're getting, all the slow animations, moving around the map (mid-quest) makes it so each quest takes at least 20 minutes, bigger ones could take up to an hour, and you have to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this one so badly. The art and atmosphere is great. But the grindiness combined with the degree of randomness in such a punishing setting is simply too much for me. It just feels like an excercise in frustration. I don't want to spend hours leveling and gearing a hero for them to die in seconds to no fault of my own. Only 4.6% have completed the game and that includes the easiest difficulty. I think that tells you all you need to know.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game as long as you remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Name all your heroes IRL friends. One of them dies after a 100hr run due to insane RNG. Crashes out and quits for 4 years, now I'm back at it again. 10/10 would crash out again

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A harsh, gloomy turn-based strategy game. Very interesting intense battles. Lots of bosses. Various dungeons to choose from. There are many characters with different characteristics in the game. There are many options for creating a team and many combat strategies. The game does not forgive mistakes. One mistake and you will lose the entire team that you have been leveling for a long time, which is cool, hahaha. The style and graphics are excellent, as well as the music. It creates an…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is an awesome game for which it saddens me to leave a negative review, but it would be irresponsible of me as a fan of the original devs and their vision to not comment on what has happened to Red Hook in the past year: DD1 is, again, awesome! however, it has largely been abandoned in favor of its cash cow sequel after DD2 left Early Access, and is on the way to ruin after being sold off to BHVR, the owners of Dead by Daylight and other such notorious slopified live service games. the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A masterclass in dungeon crawler gameplay. An epic journey worth the time as you train your heroes and gather loot to prepare yourself for the namesake Darkest Dungeon in the endgame. The voice of the sadly passed Wayne June for the Ancestor turns the makings of a great game into a legendary one. The atmosphere of the game really shows the terrifying nature of venturing into these dungeons.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My experience with the Darkest Dungeon can be likened to a really dizzying rollercoaster ride. I received the game from a great friend of mine and decided to go in completely blind to the experience. On my initial playthrough I quickly fell in love with the amazing hand-drawn artstyle, the superb Lovecraftian inspired creature and environmental design, the soundtrack and the marvelous voice acting of the Ancestor (RIP Wayne June) however, the gameplay to me was extremely decisive. The combat…

The design of the world and its enemies as well as the iconic narrator are so good and unlike any other game. The turn-based combat is also highly enjoyable, which is extremely high praise. I usually hate turn-based combat and big portion of that is how unengaging and meaningless each individual combat usually ends up being. The expectation in most games is that you can lose any amount of health in a fight and heal up outside…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would start on the "radiant" or 'easy' difficulty when playing this game for the first time (I wish I had). It takes a while to get a sense of which characters synergize, what the challenges and rewards of each biome are, how to manage your money, etc. As the game suggests after the opening credit, this learning curve can mean you lose a lot of characters, money, and progress... often. However, once you understand the mechanics and gimmicks, the losses and successes feel genuinely earned, the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the best rogue-like and party/resource management games ever made. The reason why this game has so much depth and challenge is because trade-offs are built into every decision. Deciding between trade-offs may very well be 99% of the game. There are dungeons of varying difficulty and length that require different builds and resources. Deciding on one of these can be choosing between a sure-thing and risking a lot for a greater reward that will make the rest of the game much…

However, I have never once been in a good mood after a session. This game just beats you down with payoff that feels ungratifying. I've played other games that are extremely difficult or stressful on a session-to-session basis, but this just isn't fun to me.
