What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 209 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (931 of 1,193 positive).
Players find Darkwater a fun co-op game with strong potential, especially when played with friends. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the game lacks polish, content, and variety, feeling incomplete or like a demo. [4][5][6] Some players report significant bugs, including inventory wipes and unauthorized players joining private lobbies. [7][8][9]

This game has potential, but it desperately needs to be redeveloped, polished, and most importantly bug fixed. My friends and I were playing in a private lobby, yet items kept disappearing from our inventories when switching between rounds. That alone was frustrating, but it got worse. Despite being in a private game, a random player somehow joined our lobby, gave us unlimited credits, and completely ruined the …

this is an amazing game, especially with friends. its like a mix of FTL ship combat, Lethal company looting, and Barotrauma submarine vibes, all perfectly blended together. Highly recommend playing this game, it has a lot of content and replayabiliy, definetly worth the money.

It’s a good game with a lot of potential to compete with games like Lethal Company. The problem is that even after just two hours, you can tell the game lacks polish and content, and is also riddled with bugs. The atmosphere is there—it’s pretty nerve-wracking—the naval “battles” are pretty hard to get the hang of but you get used to them, the game looks more or less nice, etc. The environments are pretty …

A really fun game with insane potential. I beat with friends on easy difficulty in ~5 hours, and do not feel compelled to play it again on a harder one. The ideas are interesting, the ship combat is fun, but it lacks depth and replayability. The main gameplay loop is split into two sections: Ship Combat and Outpost Exploration. Ship Combat is pretty much a replica of FTL's ship combat, but you and your friends are …

The Devs advertising accurately shows you the gameplay of this game. Much fun, especially if you like Lethal Company style games. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!
Summarised from 34 of the 265 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
77% of the 209 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Darkwater. The complaint that keeps coming up: lacks content and variety in enemies and environments. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe someday it might be worth it. It has potential. But not yet. You can't really play this game solo. You can't run the weapons system fighting another submarine and deal with water leaks at the same time. It takes at least 2 people. Second, there is no way to save. It only saves as you cross 'regions'. Example: First game, found out post. Docked. Entered. walked around for a minute, everything started bouncing up and down in the room....dead. Start again. No save. second game, Found a…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like it, but it is FULL of BUGs today at OCT 2025. I rather have it with half features but bugless, than its current state. The sync of objects between 3-4 players is broken. Shop breaks when one client breaks, etc, I will change my review when you fix it!

Noi J'tat!! I was hoping for Monkeybirds and more. #WarhammerCommunity #Warhammer #Pirates #ThePiratesofDarkWater
neutral · AI labelView post →Definitely worth the $12, but the game lacks content, and the combat feels tedious and awkward, particularly in melee. However, the concept and foundation are certainly present.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels more like a demo and less like a 1.0 game in my opinion. Hopped on with a friend for a bit over an hour and both the submarine fights and outpost raids felt kinda..... flat. Sub fights felt like it was just aim the guns then spend the rest of the time repairing and outpost raids were just go around, hold E on something, then go back. Not much else to say.

neutral · AI labelView post →I've seen a few pretty critical reviews of this game that have no more than a single hour of playtime and all their issues look to be specific to them, not the game in general. That being said, there *are* some bugs in this game that's been out for all of three days and the devs haven't even had time to roll out the first hotfix for yet, so keep that in mind for a lot of the complaints so far. Darkwater is definitely a fun game. Even and especially for $10, a friand and I snagged it and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is good, it's fun, I like it. It doesn't feel complete, this should be in early access. From encountering major bugs every session such as dying or having inventory wiped on district transition with the only fix being restarting the game, to things feeling under developed, you can get portholes you can look out of but there is nothing out there but darkness and bubbles. Boarding other ships is fun and interesting but it's disappointing how often there is nothing more to loot than the…

We had a great time, getting through a tutorial mission and the first two parts of the campaign’s Act One. It plays really smoothly, and I love that you can pause the game to pick up later!

neutral · AI labelView post →Until This issue is fixed, I can't recommend the game. I feel sick when playing due to the player camera pacing being different from the world. Simply move around and you will find out. If this is the effect you want to give your game sure, But it's nauseating for some of us. Here's a discussion about this: 1.0.0.1 doesn't fix this. https://steamcommunity.com/app/619540/discussions/1/686369066286348247/?tscn=1775235747
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably the best "Lethal Company"-like game on the market right now. More entertaining, with more to do for each individual. We did three runs and kept running into new stuff. Game looks super promising, definitely grab it if you're on the edge of buying it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blight Templars mark the end of the common enemies; just boss and hero characters remain. #Warhammer #WarhammerQuest #Darkwater #WarhammerCommunity #MiniPainting
neutral · AI labelView post →The first round of “Cursed City.” The game is really great fun. We'll probably skip “Warhammer Quest: Darkwater.”, though. It just takes us too long to paint everything and get it ready to play after release. 😅 #Warhammer #WarhammerQuest #AoS #AgeOfSigmar #nerdlings
negative · AI labelView post →Tried solo, didn't make it past the first room, tried with 2 people (me and a friend) cleared a couple of outposts then kept dying repeatedly. Couldn't find a third person to attempt with but the two of us agreed this game is not balanced around anything less than a 3 player crew. Also the store page videos are misleading, you don't actually "pilot" the submarine, you just click on a destination and it consumes fuel and goes there instantly. More Horror, less Barotrauma.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the session I played with friends, was a lot of repetitive stations with coral-infested enemies, I assumed it was early access, but surprised to see it was 1.0 and considered "content complete".

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well we failed to cleanse the swamp on our first run of Dark Water. Poor Bren Tylis spent most of the game suffering from Splat and Splattered #warhammercommunity #warhammer #warhammerquest #darkwater #boardgames
neutral · AI labelView post →Very bare bones. Lacks fun or diverse gameplay. Not that is is marketed explicitly as 3D Barotrauma, but it certainly seems to be riding on it in the main game image, enemy design, and general aesthetic. Just "Baro", no "trauma"... maybe more like "Ba" in the amount of content it has :P
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My hopes for WHQ Darkwater - * Ruleset that is straightforward to pick up. *expanded roleplay book like WHQ of old. *expansion sets with minis, board tiles and quests. *stats for heroes from regular AoS to be featured in time. *A genuine wider interest in the game than the minis.
neutral · AI labelView post →The game is just very repetitive and not that fun. Basically just a loop of unsatisfying exploration of abandoned bases that mostly look/feel the same and not very engaging sub battles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, mini painting this last weekend: I have finished the Pestigors for Darkwater. I didn't like painting them and they aren't good. But they are done and that gets me closer to playing the game! Second image is my various Hasslefree minis for Frostgrave. I love them.
negative · AI labelView post →It's a fun enough game with people you can talk with, but i found the lack of meta progression between run to be lack luster and i love games that give permanent progression. This game only unlock different submarines so aside from casual fun there isn't much to do. It's a good game, just not my type.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as much as I wanted to enjoy this game I cannot.. AT ALL. The gameplay IS fun, the ideas presented are enjoyable but it's absolutely hampered by ridiculous lag, frame drops and issues which caused not only the game to crash, but also my entire PC to have literal aneurisms as performance across my system tanked, even after the game was closed out, I had to force close my PC at least once. Even writing this review has taken me 10~ minutes because it caused such bad problems for every…

negative · AI labelView post →Bought this game just to play it with a couple of friends for spooky Halloween vibes and I have to say that it really surprised me how fun this game is! You can tell that it's still sort of early development and there could really be a bit more variety in the enemies and enviroments you can encounter but with a couple of patches I think this can become a really awesome and in depth multiplayer game. Obviously very much inspired by Lethal Company and copies a lot of gameplay mechanics from it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is definetly fun with friends and has insane potential, but it needs more content More enemies especially, and a whole new array of random encounters and choices I really hope this doesn't fall into the 'abandoned child' category that so many of these kinds of games end up in, where theyre updated once and then forgotten about
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun with friends, mid alone. The gameplay loop is basically Lethal Company but with a cool battleship twist. Managing the ship while getting spammed by torpedoes, hooks, and mines is chaotic in a good way. Constant repairs + fighting back = actually pretty engaging. Looting though? Kinda disappointing. Way too many fake-out spots like rows of lockers where only 1–2 are actually open. Feels lazy. If you see something that potentially looks lootable, chances are it’s not. But I guess with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good gameplay loop, needs a greater variety of maps, submarine encounters and enemies. Also needs more loot and a reason to keep pushing forward but currently the struggle seems somewhat hollow. Very lethal companyesque but lacking some of the elements that keep you engaged. I will keep an eye on this as it has the potential to be a really fun game to pick up with friends but at the moment you will probably only get a few hours of enjoyment before it gets stale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly pretty underrated, if you're at all interested in the game you should pick it up
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game literally got updated a year, then support dropped completely. Lmao. Don't waste your money on this game, the combat is awkward and so are most features that just feel lackluster. Just get lethal company twice
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute shame that more people aren't playing this game. I found it accidentally scrolling through Coop games, on like the 100th page. 10/10 wonderful game. Great Coop game with friends. Better than most Coop games out there and for $9.99 is a steal.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything is there, but basic. I’d love to see more variety when clearing outposts, since that’s where the game really shines right now. Maybe add more ways to deal with different monsters or environment.
