What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 183 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (4,783 of 8,443 positive).
Many players feel the game stripped away the series' core mechanics, like the timer and psychopaths. [1][2][3] Some reviewers still find the zombie-killing gameplay fun, especially on sale. [4][5][6] Several posters criticize the portrayal of Frank West and the story as weak. [1][5][7]

Here's why the ratings are mixed: This game is different than the previous Dead Rising games: 1) Timer removed. Previously you could not do everything in 1 gameplay. Now you can. 2) Frank West has a different voice actor and personality change. Arguably not the real "Frank West". 3) "Psychopaths" were replaced with "Maniacs"--objectively with the latter being less interesting encounters. 4) Survivor mechanic …

Dead Rising 4 is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Is the story weak? Yes. Frank West feels noticeably different, the villains are forgettable, and the boss fights are much less memorable than the psychopaths from the older games. Those are completely fair criticisms. But calling the entire game “terrible” feels ridiculous to me. The actual gameplay is fun. Killing huge crowds of zombies, …

Dead Rising 4 is a deeply disappointing entry that effectively killed the franchise's identity. The game stripped away the core mechanics that made the series great, most notably abandoning the tense time limits and, most criminally, removing the signature, over-the-top, special Psychopath boss battles. The result is a shallow, frustrating experience. Frank West's return is marred by a stupid and cringe-worthy story …

in a series that is built for being wacky, over the top, gore fests with the power fantasy of being an hero saving survivors; this game manages to be too wacky, too over the top, with less effective gore, with too much power that prevents you from feeling like you are threatened and the idea of saving survivors is a joke. this isn't even to mention the massacre on frank's character, the introduction of weaker …

I have been a big Dead Rising fan for a long time now, and as time has gone by I've told myself I will play every game in the series. This one is the one I was dreading by far the most, and for really apparent reason I'm gonna just break down all the things wrong with this game one by one and show where it lacks compared to the others The Gameplay: This game removed all of what made dead rising good in order to …

Critics, per Wikipedia
Dead Rising 4 received "mixed or average" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. IGN's Brandin Tyrrel liked the new Frank West and the game's take on Christmas consumerism, as well as the "detailed presentation and careful consideration that went into both the world and the story." Tyrrel felt Capcom had balanced the absurdity of the gameplay with intelligence and feeling, but specifically found the safehouses too simple and underwhelming, writing he "would've loved to see some sort of shelter defense system come into play." Game Informer's Jeff Cork similarly praised the gameplay, writing that Capcom Vancouver "infused the series with fresh ideas and some…

And they have every right to be. Am I mad at Capcom for butchering this franchise? Yeah, a bit. Dead Rising 4 became what happens to a lot of franchises that don't know when to quit: it became a parody of itself. I mean, just look at the only video trailer on Steam: it's a f*ck fest of skins, loony weapons, and ridiculous gags.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I went into Dead Rising 4 expecting chaotic zombie slaying, ridiculous weapons, and that special spark the series had. What I got felt like someone forgot to plug the game in before shipping it. Frank West returns—except he’s been replaced by a guy who looks like Frank West, sounds like Frank West, but behaves like Frank West’s stunt double reading lines off a cue card, the zombies were fun for about three minutes, right up until the novelty wore off and I realized I was basically mowing…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For years I avoided playing Dead Rising 4 due to the negative reviews and word of mouth. I finally decided to give it a try and found that while much of the criticism is valid it’s still a Dead Rising game and one that I had a lot of fun with. To address the negatives first, yes it’s true that DR4 is lacking the heart and soul of the previous games. Many staples of the series like the game loop & timer, psychopaths, survivor escort missions and multiple endings have been removed and…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On February 3rd 2026 Capcom released an update that removed Denuvo, a DRM which requires a costant internet connection, and replaced it with the Enigma Protector. This DRM is supposed to prevent "cheating" (any kind of modding of the game) and it's russian developed. Tested by the Youtube channel Digital Foundry in the video "Resident Evil 4 PC: Is New DRM Impacting Game Performance?" has been found that the Enigma Protector DRM causes an average of -10% in framerate drops, with dips of -40%…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I beat this on xbox and bought it on sale because it's still fun to play during the holidays. It's one of the few Christmas themed games that I own. I'll preface this review by saying: I have bias towards the overall dead-rising franchise as a whole, being an OG fan who grew up with Deadrising Chop Till You Drop! On the Wii and Xbox360. The deadrising games have been a huge part of my childhood. When they released this game they promised that it would be: THE RETURN OF FRANK WEST!!…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What happened? I am a huge Dead Rising fan. I loved 3 and despite the usual jankyness and terrible PC optimisation , I finished the game and all the DLC and thoroughly enjoyed it. But this is something else. How did they ruin the franchise so badly. Let's ignore the game breaking bugs and frequent crashes. (over 12 months after release). They actually put the real ending behind PAID DLC! I'm sorry, I just cannot recommend this. Such a shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead Rising, honestly, should be a series with a new protagonist each game and considering Dead Rising 4 brought Frank back and did him so dirty people call him "Hank East", I ain't exactly confident in this.
negative · AI labelView post →It's dumb zombie-killing fun. The weapon combos are ridiculous and smashing through hordes never gets old, but the game gets repetitive pretty quickly. Story is forgettable and it doesn't quite have the same charm as the older games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hank East, the Video Game. I had fun of all of the Dead Rising minus Remakes, because that's what I know back then, Unfortunately I cant say the same thing on this final series, the game that shuts down the company (Capcom Vancouver), I played older games till reach ending + doing side quests and I had fun, I played 4 hours of DR4 and I don't even wanna touch again. So my critique is... Hey, lets make things grindier for no reason, so we need to level up to gain "0.1%" of power, Hey, lets…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even though it has many negative reviews because of its state before and maybe it is not that good compared to the previous entries, I will say this I have a good time playing with this game. Get it on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who recently went through the whole series this game is abysmal. It tries to change important lore bits or just completely ignores what Happens in the older games. This game also does away with the traditional square's for health bar and time limit. The true ending/ overtime mode is locked to the frank rises DLC. Weapon durability even when making combo weapons is utter ♥♥♥♥. you get like 10 swings out of some of these weapons and they already break. even with a fully upgraded frank.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's very rare that I'll say a game outright stinks. But, boy does Dead Rising 4 stink. And it stinks in a way that's hard to describe. It just feels awful to play. Almost like the prompts and animation aren't comingling, with health magically draining and combat flowing too loosely. #blutoid

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros - Deeper skill system. DR4 has 100 levels instead of the 50 from previous games, with much faster paced levelling, meaning that you have far more skills to unlock and you get a much better feeling of progression, as Frank gets stronger, carries way more equipment and makes it last longer. - Exo suits. The game’s Exo Suits are a fun powertrip, letting Frank use special attacks and wield larger, more devastating weapons, usually it’s on a timer to make sure you aren’t too overpowered but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i already beat this game multiple times on my xbox years ago and the reason im still giving it a thumbs up on here is because it works really well on the steam deck oled and it's a smooth 60 fps! most people actually hate this game but it's actually my favourite dead rising game fun fact!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You guys aren't going to believe this but Dead Rising 4 isn't a Dead Rising game. they just kinda put some zombies in a thing and they took the name Frank West and used it again but this isn't a Dead Rising. There's not even a clock
negative · AI labelView post →Capcom Vancouver don't seem to care at all about their customers, as the game still has Denuvo even after over 9 years.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall it was fun. The main campaign / story was cool with decent action. And the DLC was actually a lot more fun than I expected. I wouldn't say it's worth full price but definitely give it a go if you want some zombie killing action.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have just completed Dead Rising 4 and the Frank Rising DLC. (Putting the ending behind a DLC was certainly a choice.) I did it in two sittings, taking me 16 hours total. It was bad from start to finish. The only saving graces being it was easy enough to just do for the first time in 2 sittings and the constant collision bugs were often humorous while not getting into my way much. That being said I didn't need to try for the engine jank to kick off. Just climbing onto a box in the course…

Don't Don't Don't. If you like mini golf go for it, otherwise don't do it. Save yourself, IT PLAYS WAY WORSE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man, I was kind of a jerk to this game when it came out. They have certainly streamlined and narrowed the focus of Dead Rising to the combat, but it still is just a bizarre action game compared to its peers. Making combo weapons in the field, having the time to just throw down with bizarre weapons you've found or change your outfit. Time to explore buildings and look for secrets. I can't speak to replayability as of yet, but once I got the feel for it, I played through 80% of it in one, long,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →5/10. It's bad. If you want to just kill zombies its an okay game for 5$. The story really starts to feel like a slog 5 hours in when all you're doing is shooting humans with guns over and over again. By far the worst Dead Rising game ever produced.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How to kill a franchise in one release. I don't usually like opening with melodrama but wow this game may have actually provably been one of the worst zombie games I have ever played - right alongside the shovelware you can find on epic or itch.io, and most definitely the worst Dead Rising in the franchise by a mile. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an average DR game at best. It takes away the best aspects of DR1 and tries to expand on DR2 and DR3 aspects that wasnt that good. Clunky controls, insane input lag on a controller, the approach to optional bosses is stupid and the mandatory boss fights are the weakest ive ever seen. This game is just not a good DR game, might be fun, it's just not good
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game should not have happened. should've just stuck to the formula that worked lol completely boring and uninteresting, no meaningful psychopaths and all the survivors wear a stupid costume. there is no personality, nothing that sticks out here. even the humor sucks such a disappointment from a franchise i actually love and come back to often. please never do this again if you get another chance
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The biggest spit to the face of a game I've ever had the displeasure of sinking my time and money into. I bought this the day it released its hell upon the world, I have NEVER been the same sense that day. I wake up everyday knowing that Frunk East is the last main character in a mainline Dead Rising game. And until the day we get a new entry this will be the picture people have the franchise going out on, a sad, pathetic, straight abysmal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. Please if you want to buy this game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead Rising 4 is my favorite game in the series and is the best dead rising game to date. The level of hate this game has received is unjustified. Gen Z doesn’t know good games. The first dead rising game had no weapon combinations and other than the timer consistently ticking down there was literally nothing to do in the mall literally 90% of that game is pointless. The second game introduced weapon combinations on a micro level but then you have to run around and grab Zomebrex on a timer for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's alright but if you really want a true Dead Rising experience all you really need is Dead Rising 1. This is like a devolved dead rising. Even Dead Rising 3 was better than this IMO
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →stress free and fun game to play story mode very good and replayable with continous fun! and i mean who does like to kill zombies right? ENJOY!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead Rising 2 & 3 meets GTA with all the collectibles and stuff and Frank's there! Fun game. Love the humor. Already had it on XBOX and then got it on PC so I could play it with better graphics. "Is this Frank West the saviour of Willamette?" "Yes although I also answer to "hey, assh**e" and "Frank who?"

There are things I like and don't like about this game. So far: PROS: - Murdering zombies is still fun - Graphics and asset textures are good - Why tf can't I throw my melee weapons - The pause interface looks pretty - shooting feels good, impact/recoil effects are nice. - Clear-attack can be used when holding ranged weapons - the idea Frank West changes his…

negative · AI labelView post →I finally got to finish Dead Rising 4, aka my "Christmas game", boy am I so glad it's over. There's zero sauce in this sequel, none of the charisma of what makes DR special. And Frank West is an idiot that acts more like Ash from Evil Dead. ...Don't get me started on the gameplay. 🏆 5/10
