What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (6,405 of 7,903 positive).
Some reviewers praise the developers for allowing community-hosted servers after shutdown. [1][2][3] Several posters urge making the game free-to-play to revive the player base. [4][5][6]

Game is dead. Dev's did not listen to the community, their main mode of discussion with the community (a public Discord) was essentially an echo chamber where if you spoke poorly or made a valid criticism of the developer you were either muted or entirely banned. They catered to their toxic yes-men group of generic FPS shooter fans and turned what was once a fun, stealth-based, almost social-deductionesque shooter …

It's a yes, but sadly dead. It has been almost a year and a half since this game shut down development, but I still think about it at least once a month. I just needed to shout this into the void for no one to hear. Thank you for your time.

A really fun game... And now its dead. Deceive Inc. feels like it was made in a lab for me specifically. It's a 70s retrofuturistic stylized hero-shooter based around stealth and deceiving people, specifically the other spies sent to grab a briefcase and escape. It has weird characters, an interesting premise, a cool setting, fascinating gameplay concepts, just cool as ♥♥♥♥ design and aesthetics... But perhaps it …

Deceive Inc. blends undercover espionage with hero-shooter gunplay, creating a competitive experience that feels genuinely unlike anything else on the multiplayer market. Its emphasis on deception, disguise, and mind-games makes even simple matches tense and unpredictable. The game embraces a retro-futuristic 60s–70s spy fiction vibe, reminiscent of Archer, The Incredibles, and classic Bond movies. Menus, huds, and …

They did what all Game Developers say is impossible and way to expensive to be done aka LETTING PLAYERS HOST THEIR OWN SERVERS instead of shutting them down. Huge respects for Sweet Bandits Studios and Tripwire Presents . Ubisoft and others may learn something from you.

73% of the 179 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Deceive Inc.. The complaint that keeps coming up: game is dead with low player count. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
On Metacritic, the PC and Xbox Series X/S versions received positive reviews, and the PlayStation 5 version received mixed reviews. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received fair approval, being recommended by 53% of critics. PC Gamer called it a "creative blend of sneaking and shooting that will have squads coming back for more". NME said it is "a fantastic multiplayer game" that fans of the genre will enjoy despite its confusing progression system. Shacknews called it "creative, both visually and conceptually" and "a blast to experience, just as long as you have friends at the ready". Push Square said it is "a solid starting point with a great premise" but needs…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Devs publicly dropped the game in December 2024, community is entirely dead, yet Tripwire keeps it on the steam store and still advertises it in sales... DO NOT BUY, YOU WILL WASTE YOUR MONEY.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, ruined by incompetent management. The devs refused to implement matchmaking, so 5% of players won 95% of games and new players left when they realised they were being used as content for a minority of hyper-practiced sweats. If you have a group of friends to play private lobbies with then you'll have a blast. Otherwise, look for a different game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Devs don't listen to their community
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy, the game is completely dead. It's insane that they're still charging money for this
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was Fun While It Lasted. Game was killed off by the devs for some reason and refused to make it F2P

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →can we just like... revive this game... its peak
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wonderful game, one of the best shooters I played in its heyday. Still get together with streamer friends sometimes, and with a group of people it's so fun. I wish the devs went free to play, if they did i'm sure the game would have survived... Only thing more i'd ask for at this point is to go back to the core theming and remove the 'dungeons and dragons' theme that was part of season 4, as that was meant to be a limited time thing. I'd like to hear the original menu music/lobby music again.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy this. It was an interesting premise that the developers failed to fully achieve. The game studio has since shut down and the game was abandoned. It peaks at 25 daily players. You'll NOT find a Lobby. >>>Stay Away<<<
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I miss when this game had a player count man was it fun
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game while it lived. Game is dead now and Abandoned by the devs. Don't buy, steam should remove this game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea was great but unfortunately, the game is dead and averages at about 30 players a day, as of writing this review I was 1 of 15 playing the game. I remember playing this game when there was roughly 7k players. it was a lot more fun back then
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is absolutly killer, when I played it, I could never get any of my friends to play with me. So unfortunatly I stopped playing eventually BUT not one day went by when I was playing this game and I did not have fun. 10/10 game would play again if revived.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love this game, but games are often filled with bots, matchmaking can take 1 minute to ten. And as of 16/09/2026 I cant even play it as it says 'can not ascess service'

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →make the game free and sell cosmetics. its the only way to revive this game if theres even a chance left. really fun game in its peak tho.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Engaugeing (Sorry) gameplay but do not buy, I love it but it is dead
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Creative vision and game design 10/10, business model and corporate backing 0/10. Truly an amazing game with tons of unique features and abilities, its genuinely a tragedy this game died and I hope some day we see something like it again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is very fun, however it's dead with a max of 34 player in a 24 hour period. I would recommend getting it on sale but expect to wait about 10-20 minutes (from my experience) for bot filled lobbies.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I miss this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like this game and was sad to see it wouldn't receive anymore updates, however I am a little peeved that a game that has been un-updated remains at the full price. I would understand if the game was getting an update every once and a while but the game has been near gone for 2 years. If you found this game and want to buy it, don't unless the price goes significantly down from the base price (which right now at time of writing this is $19.99). There is almost no one on, and even if you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They killed the game by announcing its shutdown. Servers are still up, but good luck finding a match... Should’ve gone free-to-play since then! EDIT: Glad they released the community server update, but the price is still a huge barrier for a game in this state. Hope they do something about it. Most unique FPS I’ve ever played :,/
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was incredibly fun while active, but it never quite got the player base it needed or deserved. It's a real shame, but I hope one day by some miracle they make the game free and sell cosmetics. I don't enjoy the free to play model, but for a game like this with a niche audience that just wants people to play with/against it makes a lot of sense. Remove the $20 barrier of entry for the typical FPS audience and I think many would be surprised at how much they enjoy this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FOR THE LVOE OF GOD MAKE THIS GAME FREE PLEASE just add more cosmetics or a battlepass or SOMETHING IDC just make it f2p already. i remember when this had lobbies and was actually fun and i had so much fun, such an underrated game

neutral · AI labelView post →I unfortunately cannot reccomend this game in its current state. As it stands, the game has completely ceased development wise, not even minor bug fixes. Of course being a live service game it needs updates to thrive or at least survive. The second thing it needs is players, which it does not have. Daily player numbers hover between 5 to 35 players. It's only a matter of time before the server's eventually get unplugged and it joins the graveyard of other dead live service games. You can however…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Deceive was a phenomenal game that unfortunately was overshadowed by other releases on-top of having a less than impressive content release schedule. The game with friends, can be quite fun however like you'll see in other reviews the developers announced they would be ceasing development. Things that could have been better. -More Consistent Content -Game should have been Free to play -Regular Balances and transparent communication.

neutral · AI labelView post →The design of operating props to deceive other users as a gameplay mechanic is definitely not something newly discovered in social subtraction games. From “Town of Salem” to “First Class Trouble”, games have executed this in various ways. Deceive Inc.’s hardiness lies in its 70’s full of life atmosphere, which united with such a gameplay mechanic, actually makes you feel like 007 in a covert assignment. The goal is to withdraw a package closed in a vault beyond several rooms and stations. To…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hello, this is my very first Steam review. I recently saw the news about Sweet Bandits Studios, and it genuinely made me sad to hear that the team is being dissolved... The game they created is a true gem!
